    tar -xvf company_raw_2012-03-16.tgz --directory=/root/test --strip-components=4 I am using the following tar option to remove the leading directories and it is working as expected. --strip-components NUMBER strip NUMBER of leading components from file names before extraction It works only when I know that there are going to be 4 sub-directories. I have tar files and I do not know if there will be 2, 3 or 4 folders inside. How do I strip the entire path and extract files in the given "directory" path.

    I am looking for a solution for copying all the files from a specific directory on the hard drive, to a specific directory on a USB memory device, once this device is connected. I have a program that downloads podcast episodes for me. I would like these files to be automatically moved (or at least copied) to my mp3 player once I connect it to the computer. I have both windows xp and linux machines, so a solution for any of them will work for me.

    I chrooted a user to the directory /var/www/upload using ChrootDirectory /var/www/upload in my etc/ssh/sshd_config. The permissions of all the files in var/www/upload is 755 and owner is root:upload_user. However, I still cannot modify the files. (Getting a permission denied error.) Is it possible if I create a subdirectory with ownership upload_user:upload_user. Is it, by any means, possible to allow my chrooted user to write to his / directory?

  • How to resolve symbolic links in a shell script

    Given an absolute or relative path (in a Unix-like system), I would like to determine the full path of the target after resolving any intermediate symlinks. Bonus points for also resolving ~username notation at the same time. If the target is a directory, it might be possible to chdir() into the directory and then call getcwd(), but I really want to do this from a shell script rather than writing a C helper. Unfortunately, shells have a tendency to try to hide the existence of symlinks from the user (this is bash on OS X): $ ls -ld foo bar drwxr-xr-x 2 greg greg 68 Aug 11 22:36 bar lrwxr-xr-x 1 greg greg 3 Aug 11 22:36 foo -> bar $ cd foo $ pwd /Users/greg/tmp/foo $ What I want is a function resolve() such that when executed from the tmp directory in the above example, resolve("foo") == "/Users/greg/tmp/bar".

  • Learn Cloud Computing – It’s Time

    Last week, I gave an in-house presentation on cloud computing.  I walked through an overview of cloud computing – characteristics (on demand, elastic, fully managed by provider), why are we interested (virtualization, distributed computing, increased access to high-speed internet, weak economy), various types (public, private, virtual private cloud) and services models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS.)  Though numerous providers have emerged in the cloud computing space, the presentation focused on Amazon, Google and Microsoft offerings and provided an overview of their platforms, costs, data tier technologies, management and security.  One of the biggest talking points was why developers should consider the cloud as part of their deployment strategy: You only have to pay for what you consume You will be well-positioned for one time event provisioning You will reap the benefits of automated growth and scalable technologies For the record: having deployed dozens of applications on various platforms over the years, pricing tends to be the biggest customer concern.  Yes, scalability is a customer consideration, too, but it comes in distant second.  Boy do I hope you’re still reading… You may be thinking, “Cloud computing is well and good and it sounds catchy, but should I bother?  After all, it’s just another technology bundle which I’m supposed to ramp up on because it’s the latest thing, right?”  Well, my clients used to be 100% reliant upon me to find adequate hosting for them.  Now I find they are often aware of cloud services and some come to me with the “possibility” that deploying to the cloud is the best solution for them.  It’s like the patient who walks into the doctor’s office with their diagnosis and treatment already in mind thanks to the handful of Internet searches they performed earlier that day.  You know what?  The customer may be correct about the cloud.     Hi I am trying to get RecursiveDirectoryIterator class using a extension on the FilterIterator to work but for some reason it is iterating on the root directory only. my code is this. class fileTypeFilter extends FilterIterator { public function __construct($path) { parent::__construct(new RecursiveDirectoryIterator($path)); } public function accept() { $file = $this->getInnerIterator()->current(); return preg_match('/\.php/i', $file->getFilename()); } } $it = new RecursiveDirectoryIterator('./'); $it = new fileTypeFilter($it); foreach ($it as $file) { echo $file; } my directory structure is something like this. -Dir1 --file1.php --file2.php -Dir2 --file1.php etc etc But as I said before the class is not recursively iterating over the entire directory structure and is only looking at the root. Question is, how do use a basic RescursiveDirectoryIterator to display folders and then run the FilterIterator to only show the php files in those directorys? Cheers

But I got the error on using System.Web.UI; using System.Web.UI.WebControl; I have tried to add System.Web as Reference but that still doesn't resolve the stuff. I can't see System.Web.UI and System.Web.UI.WebControl in the reference lists is this normal ? Thanks.

  • Unix [Homework]: Get a list of /home/user/ directories in /etc/passwd

    I'm very new to Unix, and currently taking a class learning the basics of the system and its commands. I'm looking for a single command line to list off all of the user home directories in alphabetical order from the /etc/passwd directory. This applies only to the home directories, and not the contents within them. There should be no duplicate entries. I've tried many permutations of commands such as the following: sort -d | find /etc/passwd /home/* -type -d | uniq | less I've tried using -path, -name, removing -type, using -prune, and changing the search pattern to things like /home/*/$, but haven't gotten good results once. At best I can get a list of my own directory (complete with every directory inside it, which is bad), and the directories of the other students on the server (without the contained directories, which is good). I just can't get it to display the /home/user directories and nothing else for my own account. Many thanks in advance.

  • Building Eclipse RCP application, running fails

    Hi, after successfully building my application the start fails because it relies on config files which are located in the META-INF directory and after the build this directory is zipped into a jar file, hence making it unable to access the config files. After manually unzipping the jar, deleting the jar and renaming the directory with xxx.jar the program runs without a problem. The config files are needed for SSO login (Kerberos). Here is the code: Bundle bundle = Platform.getBundle(Application.PLUGIN_ID); String path; try { path = new URL(bundle.getLocation().substring(18)).getPath(); } catch (MalformedURLException e1) { System.out.println(e1); path=""; } System.setProperty("java.security.auth.login.config",path+"META-INF/jaas-win.config"); Path variable contains something like "plugin/mydomain.pluginame-xxxx.jar/" But it seems that the System needs the jar unzipped.   • How to do a "git export" (like "svn export")

    I've been wondering whether there is a good "git export" solution that creates a copy of a tree without the .git repository directory. There are at least three methods I know of: git clone followed by removing the .git repository directory. git checkout-index alludes to this functionality but starts with "Just read the desired tree into the index..." which I'm not entirely sure how to do. git-export is a third party script that essentially does a git clone into a temporary location followed by rsync --exclude='.git' into the final destination. None of these solutions really strike me as being satisfactory. The closest one to svn export might be option 1, because both those require the target directory to be empty first. But option 2 seems even better, assuming I can figure out what it means to read a tree into the index.
