  I am in the possession of a HP laptop specifically the HP Folio Ultrabook. I need to make an image of the harddrive so that in the event it needs to be restored I can do so with the base operating system which is Windows 7 Professional as well as the HP recovery partition. I also need to backup all data that is on the laptop. Where do I start? What software can I use? Please limit these to freely available software or Linux I need to be able to backup the image to a file server and an external harddrive Is there anything else I need to do or know? • Map ftp servers as network drives in Ubuntu Linux

  Hi everybody! I'm a new Linux user, just switched over from Windows. I've got a couple FTP servers I connect to on a regular basis through sftp. I was wondering if there was a way to, as we say in windows, map them as network drives in Linux, so I can just copy stuff into a drive or folder and it will just map it to the server by ftp. That would be pretty cool. Anybody know how this would be possible, and how to do it? I Can't see to find anything in the literature. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04. Thanks!

• Running telnet standalone - possible?

  So, this is what I want to do: there is a local non-superuser and it can upload the file into /tmp. Using this account, I download a telnet server package equivalent to what is already installed. I modify some settings, setting all file directories into /tmp. Then compile and run as a standalone telnet server. Is this possible? If not, what makes this impossible? Or as a non-privileged user, would there be any way to enable telnet?

• Mounting LVM2 volume with XFS filesystem

  Unfortunately I'm not able to access the data on my NAS anymore. I can't figure out why this is the case as I haven't changed anything. So I plugged one of the harddisks in my computer to access the data. What I did: kpartx -a /dev/sdc Now I should be able to access /dev/mapper/vg001-lv001 When trying to mount it I get: sudo mount -t xfs /dev/mapper/vg001-lv001 /home/user/mnt mount: /dev/mapper/vg001-lv001: can't read superblock Now I did a parted -l which gave me Modell: Linux device-mapper (linear) (dm) Festplatte /dev/mapper/vg001-lv001: 498GB Sektorgröße (logisch/physisch): 512B/512B Partitionstabelle: loop Number Begin End Size Filesystem Flags 1 0,00B 498GB 498GB xfs Does anybody have a solution how to recover the data?

• Ubuntu/Linux version recommendation for HP dv6 3122TX?

  I purchased a HP dv6 3122TX recently and after installing Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit I ran into multiple issues like, The wireless driver is not supported by Uubntu. (1) [The driver is RaLink RT3090 ] The ethernet stopped working sometimes for no reason [The driver is Realtek RTL8111/8168B ] "Corrupted low memory at ..." issue which is described as a kernel bug in Ubuntu support forums. (It started to take me to a terminal instead of the GUI and couldn't start x server after that) As I'm not an expert Ubuntu user I got fed up of all these issue and got back to Windows 7. But I need an Ubuntu installation up and running for my development work. What are your suggestions about a reasonable Ubuntu version that I should try? Or a different Linux variation? Should I stick to a 32-bit version? It'd be great anyone can give some advice on this issue.

• Is it possible to use multi keyboards with multi keyboard layouts simultaneously?

  Considering to switch to dvorak layout, but this terminal is used by multi users as the same user account. It is unacceptable to ask all people to switch layout, plus it is hard to use dvorak layout with a keyboard qwerty-ly labeled. But there are spare (USB,qwerty) keyboards, so if I plug another keyboard in and be able to use multi layouts on different psyical keyboard simultaneously (I will rearrange letters on keys), the problem get solved. solution for either windows or linux is fine. anyway thanks all.

• Posting videos to a website... with a dynamically updating interface

  I'm currently putting together a website for my Luddite friend. He needs a blog, photos and videos... all easily updateable by him. WordPress and Blogger both have brilliant functionality to allow you to host your own blog on your own domain, but what about photos and videos? Does YouTube or Google videos or Vimeo or MSN Video or anyone offer the ability to easily insert a video navigation interface onto your own site? (Something similar to YouTube's "Channel" pages, except on your own domain?) Same goes for photos. I'm pretty sure FlickR doesn't allow you to easily upload and manage photos for viewing on your own domain. Does anyone else? My friend doesn't want to be editing any HTML and I don't want to be creating a complicated system to handle tons of different videos. There must a user-friendly solution in this day and age? Thanks for any help!

• Can font substitutions in MS Word be controlled?

  Suppose that I am typing text in MS Word (any version) and I enter a character that does not exist in the font being used. Say, I’m using Times New Roman and I type 2300 Alt X, which turns to the diameter sign “?”, which does not exist in Times New Roman. MS Word picks it up from a different font, like Arial Unicode MS. This may mess up the typographic style, or line spacing. And this happens without notice. Perhaps the most inconvenient feature here is that MS Word does not automatically return to the original font. Subsequent text appears in the replacement font, unless the user sees what is happening and realizes that he needs to change the font. The question is: Can such substitutions be controlled, e.g. by specifying the font(s) to be used as backup fonts? If not, is there any reliable documentation about it?

  I've bought a wireless router which I'm installing with a Telstra BigPond cable modem for a friend. As part of the setup I've got to a screen requesting username / password / authentication server for the cable modem They have contacted Telstra who supply the username / password and say that is all they need. They dont know anything about an authentication server. I guess if I dont get anything more here I'll try what it says on whirlpool and see what happens.

Why is winbind trying to use it instead of RPC? How can I force it to use only RPC and for all of this to work?

• How to get full write permission on my second drive after dual boot?

  I had a WinXP installation on my hard drive. Then I bought a 2nd drive and installed Win7. Dual boot working fine. But when I'm in the Win7 environment, it appears that I don't have full admin permission on the "D" drive (that's the drive with WinXP). Even though the user I'm logged in as has admin permissions, I have to run my apps with administrator privileges in order to get write access to the D drive. This is not the case when I do stuff on the C drive. I could just get into running those apps that access the D drive in admin mode, but that seems like overkill. Is there some secret switch I can flip so that my D drive acts like my C drive, security-wise?

  I am preparing to migrate a pretty old XP machine to Windows 7. I ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and got a couple of smaller issues (low 512Mb RAM complaints and similar stuff). Apart from that, everything else was shown as compatible, including my old ATI Radeon 9550/X1050 card: ATI Radeon 9550/X1550 Series: This device is compatible with Windows 7. The thing that concerns me is that people around the web seem to be unable to actually find a Windows 7 driver for this card. Even the ATI web page states that this is a legacy device: If the user chooses to, they can install the ATI Catalyst Windows Vista graphics driver under Windows 7. [...] Using the ATI Catalyst Windows Vista driver under Windows 7 is not officially supported by AMD [...] Should I trust the Advisor and continue with the update? Does this mean Microsoft will provide at least a generic driver which will allow hardware acceleration with this card?

  I have a fresh install of Mint 15 with Cinnamon and I can't find an option to hide all icons on the desktop. In settings-Desktop there are only options to show/hide the home folder, trash, etc, but no option to hide the contents of the "Desktop" folder. How do I hide the $HOME folder contents from appearing on the desktop in Linux Mint 15? UPDATE: It actually looks like the icons on the desktop are the contents of the $HOME folder, not $HOME/Desktop. ** Question was edited to reflect the fact that it was the user's home folder icons showing, not just "my computer", "trash", etc.

• Accessing non-port80 web server using IPv6

  In a normal IPv4 network, I can go into any browser such as Firefox and browse a server on a IPv4 address not hosted on port 80: (add http:// - Super user stops "new" users from adding links)192.168.42.6:8080/ This accesses the server on Port 8080 on 192.168.42.6. However, if I try this with a IPv6 IP, I get no luck. This tries to access port 8080 on fe80::520:ff0f:ece0:1 : http://[fe80::520:ff0f:ece0:1]:8080/ Firefox will automatically "fix" this URL to: http://[www.fe80::520:ff0f:ece0:1.com]:8080/ which does not help me access it at all. So either I am doing something really wrong OR there's something really wrong with IPv6. Couldn't find anything that even remotely helped on the Internet. (And yes, there is a server running on the IPv6 in question)

• Yahoo toolbar and local sites (e.g. Intranet)

  We have local sites running on IIS in regular MS Windows network. User base has IE, FireFox and Chrome. Local sites are isolated by host headers and DNS record created for the common IP accordingly. This is a regular set-up. Users without Yahoo Toolbar type http://intranet and the sites resolves. Users with Yahoo toolbar type http://intranet and the toolbar goes off to search for this site in public domain. This is irrespective to whether the address is typed into the browser address bar or the toolbar. All versions of toolbar and IE are affected. I cannot see a setting on the toolbar to switch this "irritating" behaviour off and simply un-installing the toolbar is not an option. Any ideas?

• Why is Thunderbird saying I am working offline when Work Offline is not ticked?

  Thunderbird says "You are currently offline. Do you want to go online to get new messages?" The menu item File-Work Offline is not checked. Is there another "offline" setting? Back story: I moved my Thunderbird profile from another user to my new account today following the instructions here. (it's down as I type). This may be a red herring.   We have four different machines that all have "Empty Temporary Internet Files when browser is closed" set to true (checked) in IE8's Internet Options (located under the Security section in the Advanced tab). No one remembers checking that checkbox to turn on the setting. What is the default value supposed to be? I'm specifically interested in Windows 7 and Windows XP. I have run rsop.msc on one of the corporate machines—3 of the 4 are members of a corporate network/domain—and see this under User Configuration, which makes the current scenario seem even stranger: The Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) also shows the Configure Delete Browsing History on exit setting to be Not configured (under Computer ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesWindows ComponentsInternet ExplorerDelete Browsing History).

  I noticed that now and again, Chrome will make three requests to weird hostnames that arent resolved.   Hi there, I've written a little utility in haXe + Neko that needs to execute some GIT commands. To avoid hardcoding the path to the GIT executable I'd like to use the which command to find out where it is. Everything works as expected when running manually from the console, but not when the the app runs on a cron job. I'm aware of the restricted environment (here or here) when you run a script using cron, but still surprised this doesn't work: /usr/bin/which git >> /home/user/git.txt The text file is created but the content is empty. Again, when run from the console it works as expected. Any ideas? I'm running OS X Leopard, if that helps. Thanks : ) Juan

To explain it a bit more in details: There is a company that has multiple computers (think in 100/1000's) and they all are missing the same system32 files since the company's software removed it. The systems are distributed all over the world and are managed by "normal" people who don't have any knowledge about computers. I want to create a usb stick that i can mail to all those people which contains a script that executes when you boot the usb. this script should replace the missing system32 files without any user input is this possible, and if so how could i manage this?
