  • How to migrate ASP.NET MVC 3 , MVC4 project to ASP.NET MVC5 ?

MVC5 will be incorporated in VS2013. MVC3 will not be supported in VS2013. I confirmed it on channel9 last time. So People who have installed only VS2013 or doesn’t have old version will be got trouble with the project that is still in MVC3. This error happen because MVC4 and 5 installation doesn’t contain the DLL that is used in Version 3 of ASP.NET MVC.   Don’t be panic. You guys want to upgrade your project. Here is a trick  to solve the issue.   When you open the project you have seen that in Reference there is some dll that have yellow icon. This means that dll are missing or not found in your configuration or system.   Now remember that dll name. Remove them from reference and add them from adding reference. I telling you to remove so VS will not prevent you to add new version of same assembly. Add all those assembly. Those dll will be following : System.Web.Mvc Razor and Webpages Dll.   Remember that in MVC3 we use old version of these assembly. Now When you done by adding all assembly then now open web.config.   There is 2 web.config file in our mvc project.  One is in root folder and second in Views folder. You need to update all those version no. This is not a big deal if you know the name of assembly. Now if you web.config show you assembly version as 3.000.00 then 3 would be replaced with 4 or 5 according to version no. Same thing need to applied all dll for both web.config.   Note :- In VS Template Views goes in ~/Views folder but if someone use any other folder then Views for views and those folder have also web.config then remember to update them also. Your project will be compile and make no warning and error but that certainly not work. for examples areas/views and themes/views that contain web.config also need to be updated with newer assembly version no.   After done these thing you can compile your project and it will be work as it should be Thanks for read my post. Inception using Post-it, StoryBoards, Lego or Mindmaping Techniques The first step in a Customer Experience project is to describe customer interactions creating a customer journey map. Modeling is never easy, so to succeed on this effort, it is very convenient that your CX´s team have some “abstract thinking” skills. Besides is very helpful to consult a Business Service Design offered by an Interactive Agency to lead your inception process. Initially, you may start by a free discussion using post-it cards; storyboards; even lego or any other brainstorming technique you like. This will help you to get your mind into the path followed by the customer to purchase your product or to consume any business service you actually offer to your customers, or plan to offer in the near future. (from www.servicedesigntools.org) Colorful Mind Maps are very useful to document and share meeting ideas. Some Mind Maps software providers as ThinkBuzzan provide trial versions, and you will find more mindmapping options on this post by Mashable. Finally to produce a quick one, I do recommend Wise, an entirely online mindmaping service. On my view the best results in terms of communication will always come for an artistic hand-made drawing. Customer Experience Mind Map Example Making your first Customer Journey Map To add some more formalization to your thoughts, there is a wide offering for designing Customer Journey Maps. A Customer Map can be represented as an oriented graph in which another follows each step. The one below is the most simple Customer Journey you can draw.     Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) has completely transformed IT from the time it was introduced well over a decade ago. Organizations have been re-plumbing their infrastructure for reusability, efficiency and gain and succeeding with it. Best practices have emerged and people and technology have matured. We have got better at delivering on a stable platform on mission critical applications and services. Yet, there is this one secret that sets some SOA customers apart from the others. These companies grow and revolutionize their business and not just transform their IT infrastructure. The differences seem subtle for an untrained eye examining these organizations externally. And from within the company, it’s a bit like an ant sitting on an elephant, hard to differentiate between the IT trunk and business tail. What is it that some organizations do differently that makes them succeed beyond SOA? These organizations pull in business people more and more to weigh into their IT decisions. They wrench understanding process over services. They don’t settle easily when bridging business metrics and IT performance. They anguish over business requirements not translating seamlessly and quickly into IT. IT is not just an enabler but a pillar that revolutionizes their business. Okay, I’ll give it to you. These organizations layer Business Process Management (BPM) on top of their SOA. Think about lifeblood business processes in your own organizations. If you are Fedex, this would be shipping and handling. If you are Stanford Hospital, this would be patient case-management: from on-boarding through discharge and follow-up care. If you are Wells Fargo, this would be loan origination. Now think about how your SOA ties into your business process. Can you decouple your business processes from your SOA so that the two can transform and change independent of each other? Can you forecast success metrics for your business process, make the changes across the board and then look back over different periods of time to see if you are on track? Are your critical business processes entrenched in the minds of few experts in your organization or does everyone from the receptionist to your enterprise architect to your CEO understand what they can do to revolutionize it? Business Process Management is a superset of SOA. It is the process of getting your business to articulate business value and metrics and have it implemented in IT without any loss in translation. It is the act of extracting the business process from the minds of experts and IT applications in your organization and valuing them as assets for performance and gain.   • Getting Ramped for Silverlight 4

    Here is a quick walk through of setting up your Silverlight 4 development environment.  The first assumed step is that you have Visual Studio 2010 already installed and any appropriate patches.  Then download the following in order and install each. Silverlight 4 Tools RC2 for Visual Studio and Silverlight 4 RTW Expression Blend 4 Release Candidate Silverlight Toolkit - Not necessary, but lots of good bits in this download. WCF RIA Services - This is also not necessary, but you should grab it just in case anyway. Once each of these are installed jump into Visual Studio 2010.  Start a new Silverlight 4 Project by going to File -> New -> Project -> and select the Silverlight Project Templates.  Here you'll see a new list of projects that are specific to the above listed downloads. Silverlight Business Application WCF RIA Service Class Library Silverlight Unit Test Application One way to confirm (and what I am going to display here in this entry) Silverlight 4 is installed ok is to select the Silverlight Application Template and start a new project. On the next screen you will see some of the standard options.  I always go with the ASP.NET MVC Option and with these new installations I am going to select Silverlight 4 (should be selected already) from the drop down and check the Enable WCF RIA Services check box. I also, for good measure, always create a unit test project for the ASP.NET MVC Project that will host the Silverlight Application Project.  When all is setup, the Solutions Explorer should look like what is shown below. Add the following code to the XAML of the MainPage.xaml of the Silverlight Project. <UserControl x:Class="Silverlight4.MainPage" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignHeight="300" d:DesignWidth="400">   <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="White"> <TextBlock x:Name="textBlockTest" Text="Hello World!" /> </Grid> </UserControl> Now execute the project, if all runs well you have installed Silverlight 4 successfully.   • Who Makes a Good Product Owner

    In general, the best product owners are those that care passionately about the customer of the product.  Note that I didn’t say about the product itself.  Actually, people that only care about the product, generally do not make good product owners.  Products only matter in relationship to their customers.  If a product doesn’t provide value to the customer, then the product has no value, no matter what a person might think of the product, and no matter what cool technologies exist inside of the product. A good product owner is also a good negotiator.  They recognize that many different priorities exist inside of a corporation, but that there can be only one list that developers work from.  A good product owner recognizes that its their job to help others around them prioritize (perhaps with a Product Council), but also understand that they alone have the final say about priorities and are willing to make the tough decisions required.  Deciding the priority between two perfectly valid stories is very difficult, especially when the stories are from two different departments! A good product owner is deeply interested in helping the team be successful.  They don’t seek to control the team, but instead seek to understand what the team can do and then work with the team to get the best product possible for the Customer.  A good product owner is never denigrating to team members, ever.  They recognize that such behavior would damage the trust that needs to be present between team members and product owners and will avoid it at all costs. In general, technical people (i.e. former or current developers) make poor product owners.  In their minds, they can’t separate implementation details from user functionality, so their stories end up sounding like implementation details.  For example, “The user enters their username on the password screen” is something that a technical product owner would write.  The proper wording for that story is “A user supplies the system with their credentials.”  Because technical people think different from the rest of the population, they are generally not a good fit. A good product owner is also a good writer.  Writing good stories demands good writing.  The art of persuasion, descriptiveness and just general good grammar are all required.  A good Product Owner must also be well spoken, since most of what will be conveyed will be conveyed with the spoken word, not just written word. A good product owner is a “People Person.”  They like talking to people and are very patient.  They don’t mind having questions repeated or fielding many questions, because they want to make sure that the ideas they’re conveying are properly understood so the customer gets the best product possible.  They are happy to answer any questions a team member may have and invite feedback and criticism of designs and stories, since they want a good product.  They really have little ego that gets in the way of building a great product. All of these qualities can be hard to find, but if you look close enough, you’ll find the right person in your organization.  Product owners can be found anywhere, not just in upper management.  Some of the best product owners are those that are very close to the customer.  In fact, check your customer support staff.  I’d bet that several great product owners are lurking there. Final note about what makes a good product owner.  You’re probably NOT going to find a good product owner in a manager, especially if they consider themselves a “Manager.”  Product owners don’t manage anything but the backlog, so be especially careful if the person you’re selecting for Product Owner is a manager. Silverlight 4 – Productivity Power Tools and EF4 Ryan Alford found a very interesting bug associated with EF4 and the Productivity Power Tools, and the way to get out of it is just weird as well. Silverlight 4 – Toolkit and Theming Ryan Alford also had a problem adding a theme from the Toolkit, and what all you might have to do to get around this one.... Part 4 of 4 : Tips/Tricks for Silverlight Developers. Michael Crump has part 4 of his series on Silverlight Development tips and tricks. This is numbers 16 through 20 and covers topics such as Version information, Using Lambdas, Specifying a development port, Disabling ChildWindow Close button, and XAML cleanup. The XML content importer and Windows Phone 7 Peter Kuhn wanted to use the XML content inporter with a WP7 app and ran into problems implementing the process and a lack of documentation as well... he pounded through it all and has a class he's sharing for loading sounds via XML file settings.   • Calling Web Services using ADF 11g

    One of the benefits of ADF is that fact that it can use multiple data sources. With SOA playing a big part in today’s IT landscape, applications need to be able to utilise this SOA framework to leverage functionality from multiple systems to provide a composite application. ADF provides functionality to expose web services via the ADF Business Component so if you know how to use Business Components for a database. Configuring ADF for web services is much the same. In this example I use an OSB web service that gets a customer. Create a new Fusion Web Application (ADF) Application and click OK    Provide an Application Name, GetCustomerADF and click Next    From the Project Technologies move Web Services into the Selected box. Accept the defaults and click Finish. Right-click the Model project and select New In the Gallery select Web Services –> Web Service Data Control then click OK. Provide a name GetCustomerDC and give the URL endpoint for the Web Service, then click Next Select the web service operation you want to use for the ADF application. In my example my web service only has one operation. Click Finish Save your work, File –> Save The data control has now been created, the next steps create the UI components. In your application created in step 1 find the ViewController project, right-click and choose New In the Gallery select JSF –> JSF Page Provide a name for the jsp page, GetCustomer, Also ensure that the ‘Create as XML Document (*.jsp) check box is checked. I have selected the page template, Oracle Three Column Layout but you can create a layout of your choice. I only want 2 columns so I delete the last column but right-clicking the right had panel and selecting Delete Drag the fields you require from the web service data control to the left pannel. In my example I only require the Customer ID. When you drag to the panel select Texts –>ADF Input Text w/Label In this example I want to search on a customer based on the ID. So Once I select the ID I want to execute the request. To do this I need a button. Drag the operation object under the fields created in step 15. Select Methods –> ADF Button. You now need to provide the mappings, Choose the ‘Show EI Expression Builder’ Navigate to the bindings, ADFBindings –> bindings –> parametersIterator –> currentRow Click OK Drag and drop the return information I just want the results shown in a form. I want to show all fields Now it is time to test, Right-click the jspx page created in steps 11 – 21 and select Run A browser should start, enter valid values and test

  • &ldquo;Our Users are Doing Something Surprising&rdquo;&hellip; but what?

    I’ve just started a discussion on the OWB Linkedin Group based on a blog post from Laura Klein’s “Users Know” blog, entitled “Your Users are Doing Something Surprising”… As a PM I found the post thought-provoking and a good reminder to learn from our customers: ...You may have written user stories and work flows... But you know who didn’t read your user stories? That’s right: your users. The result? Somewhere out there, a whole lot of your users are doing something totally unexpected with your product.... Your customers want to do something with your product so badly that they’re going out of their way to come up with clever ways to do it on their own. There are three excellent reasons for you to know what your customers are actually doing with your product: So you know if you are missing an opportunity to pivot your product or marketing So you know if you are missing an important feature So you don’t accidentally destroy a commonly used workaround or "unplanned feature" Truer words were rarely blogged. In fact just in the last few weeks I have had several "users" (some customers, and some internal to Oracle, in fact) turn up having built unexpected but powerful things around OWB, because it has such extensibility mechanisms built into it: OMB*Plus, the old Java APIs back before 10.2, and now the code template/knowledge module framework OWB shares with ODI. Some of our external users show astounding knowledge of how to make OWB really sing. (We hope to feature case studies from several of them over the course of the year on the OWB blog.) My question to all of you: can you identify things you have done or are doing with OWB or that you depend on in it that you think would come as a surprise to us? This could be either some development so advanced as to leave us all gob-smacked, or just some common (to you) thing that you use it for that you find enormously valuable but that you think is a bit off the theoretical "main line" use case of loading data warehouses. I invite the readers of this blog to come visit the OWB and ODI LinkedIn group and share their unusual applications of OWB or the very ordinary-looking features that you don’t want us to forget or would like us to extend. Your anecdotes will impress the crowd and will also help shape future data integration products from Oracle... Come on, surprise us. :)

  • Surface V2.0

    It’s been quiet around here. And the reason for that is that it’s been quiet around Surface for a while. Now, a lot of people assume that when a product team isn’t making too much noise that must mean they stopped working on their product. Remember the PDC keynote in 2010? Just because they didn’t mention WPF there a lot of people had the idea that WPF was dead and abandoned for Silverlight. Of course, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. The same applies to Surface. While we didn’t hear much from the team in Redmond they were busy putting together the next version of the platform. And at the CES in January the world saw what they have been up to all along: Surface V2.0 as it’s commonly known. Of course, the product is still in development. It’s not here yet, we can’t buy one yet. However, more and more information comes available and I think this is a good time to share with you what it’s all about! The biggest change from an organizational point of view is that Microsoft decided to stop producing the hardware themselves. Instead, they have formed a partnership with Samsung who will manufacture the devices. This means that you as a buyer get the benefits of a large, worldwide supplier with all the services they can offer. Not that Microsoft didn’t do that before but since Surface wasn’t a ‘big’ product it was sometimes hard to get to the right people. The new device is officially called the “Samsung SUR 40 for Microsoft Surface” which is quite a mouthful. The software that runs the device is of course still coming from Microsoft. Let’s talk software. As noted, it runs Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, which means you can run Visual Studio 2010 on it. The software is going to be developed in WPF4.0 with the additional Surface SDK 2.0. It will contain all the things you’ve seen before plus some extra’s. They have taken some steps to align it more with the Surface Toolkit which you can download today, so if you do things right your software should be portable between a WPF4.0 Windows 7 Multi-touch app and the Surface v2 environment. It still uses infrared to detect contacts, so in that respect nothing much has changed conceptually. We still can differentiate between a finger, a tag or a blob. Of course, since the new platform has a much higher resolution (compared to the 1024x768 of the first version) you might need to look at your code again. I’ve seen a lot of applications on Surface that assume the old resolution and moving that to V2 is going to be some work. To be honest: as I am under NDA I cannot disclose much about the new software besides what I have told you here, but trust me: it’s going to blow people away.
