• Why do 2 excel (2003) files that are exactly the same have different file size?

  I have two excel files that are exactly the same (in terms of the content of the file) but differ by quite a margin on filesize. One file is 37.5Kb while the other is 56Kb. The only difference I can see is the filename's. I don't know why there is such a big difference. Is there some sort of history or something that is stored with the file that is not visible to the user? If so, how would you delete this? Thanks for your help.

  The following is a basic log4j configuration inside Config.groovy using the log4j DSL with Grails 1.2, it works as expected (log all errors to the given file): log4j = { appenders { file name:'file', file:"c:/error.log" } error 'grails.app' root { error 'file' } } How would one translate this into a properties style log4j configuration file? The following does not work: log4j.rootLogger=ERROR, FA log4j.appender.FA=org.apache.log4j.FileAppender log4j.appender.FA.File=C:/error.log log4j.logger.grails.app=ERROR, FA I suspect it has something to do with the translation of error 'grails.app' but I really don't know. If it makes any difference, the properties file is configured externally: grails.config.locations = ["file:${basedir}/extconf/log4j.properties"] All I really want is an external log4j properties file which logs all application exceptions to a file.

  I have wrote an application that syncs two folders together. The problem with the program is that it stops responding whilst copying files. A quick search of stack-overflow told me I need to use something called a background worker. I have read a few pages on the net about this but find it really hard to understand as I'm pretty new to programming. Below is the code for my application - how can I simply put all of the File.Copy(....) commands into their own background worker (if that's even how it works)?   Im trying to locally install a program which is written in C++. I have downloaded the program and am attempting to use the "make" command to compile the program as the programs instructions dictate. However when I do I get this error: /usr/include/stdc-predef.h:30:26: fatal error: bits/predefs.h: No such file or directory compilation terminated. Looking around on the internet some people seem to address this problem by sudo apt-get install libc6-dev-i386 I checked to see if this package was installed and it was not. When I try to install it I get E: Unable to locate package libc6-dev-i386 I have already run sudo apt get update Im sure this is a rookie question but any help is appreciated, I'm running 13.10 32-bit.

• Windows Start Menu Not Staying on Top

  Hey everyone. I've had this problem since Windows Vista. I did a clean install with Windows 7 and hoped it would fix the problem. Also swapped out the video card just to rule out a strange driver issue. Here's what's happening. After running for some period of time (usually a few hours), the Start button/orb will loose it's "Chrome" and turn into a plain button that just says "Start." It will work fine for a while, but then the start menu will just stop showing. Additionally, when I hit Win+D to show the desktop, the entire taskbar completely disappears. I can get it back usually by moving/minimizing windows that may be overlapping where the start menu should show. Otherwise, it requires either a full reboot or I'll end up killing & restarting the explorer.exe process. I seem to have it running up to the point where I'm trying to get repositories published correctly. However I have a problem here: I used to have several long playlists for myself in Rhythmbox (300-500 songs each playlist, in my favored order), and I really liked to play songs from the playlist instead of shuffling all songs. So, I wonder if I can upload my playlist to Ubuntu One music, or make a same playlist on Ubuntu One Music without dragging songs one by one.   I'd never heard of this before, so shame on me, but programs like UPX can compress my files by 80% which is totally sweet, but I have no idea what the the disadvantages are in doing this. Or even what the compressor does. Website linked above doesn't say anything about dynamically linking DLLs but it mentions about compressing DESCENT 2 and about compressing Netscape 4.06. Also, it doesn't say what the tradeoffs are, only the benefits. If there weren't tradeoffs why wouldn't my linker compress the file? If I have an environment where I have one executable and 20-30 DLL's, some of which are dynamically loaded an unloaded fairly arbitrarily, but not in loops (hopefully), do I take a big hit in processing time decompressing these DLL's when they're used?

  I face problem in login to Ubuntu 12.04. I think it's caused by accessing super user (if not wrong). I type sudo nautilus to put a background to burg, but i fail x_x. After reboot, i can't login to desktop. But i can login as guest. I had 'googling' for problem solving. Most of it is login to screen like terminal (maybe tty console) by pressing ctrl+alt+F1. But after i login system says: -bash: /usr/bin/byobu/-launch: no such file or directory help help help :(

  I have installed the unity-webapps package in Ubuntu 12.04. (sudo apt-get install unity-webapps) Now I want to see what the fuss is about, so I go to http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~webapps/webapps-applications/trunk/files/head:/src/ and click on one of the options (e.g. Google Calendar). I download one of the files (GoogleCalendar.user.js). What do I do with this file? Is my webapps working? This is not what I was expecting to happen.

• have a missing file, and cant run ubuntu upon start up, and hasnt the flash drive i used didnt work either, any help?

  when I first downloaded Ubuntu to install it, it downloaded quick and caused no problems to my laptop. but then when it came time to install it as one of my operating systems, it wouldn't run because it said a file was missing or damaged. so then I uninstalled it and re-installed it but I still had that same problem. so I tried a flash-drive version but that didn't work either because it wouldn't boot from that, nor would it detect my flash drive, (in this case, an old 4 GB mp3 player). any help or tips and ideas would be great, I just need a decent operating system because windows is getting to be terrible at the moment, just note I wanna run Ubuntu along side windows 8.1

  I'm wondering how to solve the following puppet problem: I want to create several files based on an array of strings. The complication is that I want to create multiple directories with the files: dir1/ fileA fileB dir2/ fileA fileB fileC The problem is that the file resource titles must be unique. So if I keep the file names in an array, I need to iterate over the array in a custom way to be able to postfix the file names with the directory name: $file_names = ['fileA', 'fileB'] $file_names_2 = [$file_names, 'fileC'] file {'dir1': ensure => directory } file {'dir2': ensure => directory } file { $file_names: path = 'dir1', ensure =>present, } file { $file_names_2: path = 'dir2', ensure =>present, } This wont work because the file resource titles clash. So I need to append e.g. the dir name to the file title, however, this will cause the array of files to be concatenated and not treated as multiple files... arghh.. file { "${file_names}-dir1": path = 'dir1', ensure =>present, } file { "${file_names_2}-dir2": path = 'dir1', ensure =>present, } How to solve this problem without the necessity of repeating the file resource itself. • How can I initialize file names in the folders/ subfolders?

  Sometimes Thunar allows 'camel-case' of file names, but only in the immediate folder, not the sub-folders. "Perl module to convert stringt to and from CamelCase" exists in Synaptic, but it is not powerful enough, or am I ignorant? The only way I can reliably do this is with Windows shareware (paid $$): Servant Salamander). That's why all my data & archives are on NTFS partitions. BTW: Synaptic has different entries for 'initialize' and 'initialise'. But I'll mention this in another question.
