• Virtualbox and Serial Port permissions

  I have a Windows XP Pro SP3 host machine running a Windows XP Pro SP3 guest machine. The host machine has one serial port, COM1, that I need to use in the guest machine. When I add the serial port to the guest machine and try to start it, I get the following error: Failed to start the virtual machine xxx Cannot open host device 'COM1' for read/write access. Check the permissions of that device (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED). Unknown error creating VM (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED). What are some of the things that might be causing this problem? How can I check "permissions" on a serial port?

• Snow Leopard directories after hard disk crash and restore from Migrate Utility

  My hard drive on my macbook pro crashed the other day and I got a replacement from Apple with a vanilla snow leopard install. Upon returning home I used the Migration Utility to restore my previous data and configuration. So far, so good! Everything looks and works exactly the same as before the crash. However, I noticed these 2 directories that are taking up quite a bit of space: /Developer (from old Mac) /opt (from old Mac) The question is can I safely remove these? As I said, my macbook pro appears to be restored completely to before the hard drive crash. I can run all my apps and all my files appear to be intact. Therefore it seems the system is not using these directories. Also because of their odd names it doesn't seem that os x is using them for any purpose. Thanks in advance for any help!

• After installing Windows Phone 8 SDK, Connectify doesn't work

  Today I installed Windows Phone 8 SDK from the official site. After installing and a couple of restarts (it restarted the PC to enable Hyper-V), I opened Connectify. I use Connectify Hotspot to connect my iPod to the internet as I have an ethernet connection and no wireless router. The problem is that now, Connectify doesn't show WiFi in Share Over. The attached screenshot shows this. Previously, before I installed the SDK, it would show Ethernet and Wi-Fi. I would select WiFi and share my internet. Now, this is completely screwed. EDIT: I found out that the Microsoft Virtual Wi-Fi Miniport Driver has got disabled and I am not able to enable it again. Please advise. Please advise on what to do Hardware: Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, Apple MacBook Pro 9,1 15 inch Mid-2012 (non retina)

  For traffic routing through my ASA 5505, downloads for all Apple devices, including AppleTV iPad gen 1 IMac MacBook Pro are very slow. speedof.me show less than 1 Mbps download (where I should have 20 Mbps +), yet for any Windows-based device, the download speeds are in excess of 20 Mbps. The Windows device, including the iMac and MacBook Pro machines, are connected via ethernet cable. Why are Apple devices experiencing such pain? Is it an ASA setting, or something else? Thanks.

  I'm looking at purchasing a Xbox360 because I've wanted to catch up with the Halo trilogy. Does the cheap Arcade edition console support Halo 2 and Halo 3? Would I be able to save my game progress in single player? Would I be able to play online in typical maps? Would I be able to play games using the DVD drive or do I have to download everything? Does the tiny HDD hurt even if I don't download any games, trailers or music? Are there any other differences in comparison to the Xbox360 Pro? I have a regular TV that uses the composite cable, so I don't need the HDTV support in the Pro edition.

• windows 7 wireless knocks off other computers on the network

  I am trying to fix a wireless network issue. When a new windows 7 machine (we have 2 in the house) we have problems with any other windows xp machines connecting to the wireless network. I am using a linksys WRT110 running Firmware Version: 1.0.04 (which is not the latest firmware its Ver.1.0.07 but the router would not use the bin update file). I have tried a ton of variations in setting for the wireless network, changed the channel, the security level (none, wep wpa, wpa2), network type (g,bg mixed). I have also read some stuff about homegroup settings for windows 7 but have not seen any differences that make a difference. Basically windows 7 does not like to connect to our network but when I manage to get it to work the windows xp pro machines get kicked off. The windows xp pro machines are a few years old but both windows 7 machines are less than 6 months old.

Is this possible ? 1-It is ok to make the new windows 2008 server a domain controller ? 2- I want all the users accounts to be the same in the domain controller so they can still use the same username and password to login into the domain as well into the windows 2000 server that is setup as a Workgroup. 3- Do i need to do something to the windows 2000 sever to still be functional in the environment so it can be accessed by the clients computers? note:My clients computers are windows 2000 pro, xp pro and windows 7 32/64 bit.   I am running Windows 8 Pro on an Apple MacBook Pro 9,1 Mid 2012 15 inch non retina. It has a Core i7-3720 QM CPU @ 2.6 GHz. For the past few days, I have noticed that it is constantly running at max speed which is 2.59 GHz. Before, it used to run at 1.5 - 1.8 GHz on normal usage. And, the weirder thing is that CPU usage is minimal. Screenshot: So, what is the reason for this? And is it harmful?

• Joining H264 *without* re-encoding

  Hi, I have two halves of a single show in two .MP4 files, encoded in H264. I would like to join them without re-encoding. Is this possible? I managed to create a joined video as a Quicktime file (.mov) using Quicktime Pro, but then Quicktime Pro will not convert it back to .MP4 without re-encoding. This may be because looking inside the .mov file, the two H264 videos are in there still separated as individual "objects". I am also struggling with MPEG StreamClip without reaching a real solution. But I may have missed something. Note that I have the same issue with MPEG2 files. I can export them to a .MPEG container or a .TS file for example, but I don't know how to join them without re-encoding. Any suggestion welcome, preferably using Mac software.

• A very weird problem with localization (ASP.NET MVC)

  I'm using Web Developer 2010. I just created a resource file lang.resx with different values in english. Then I created a lang.FR-fr.resx with French equivalents. However after tryingto compile, I get Error 131 Task could not find "AL.exe" using the SdkToolsPath "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\bin\NETFX 4.0 Tools\" or the registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A". Make sure the SdkToolsPath is set and the tool exists in the correct processor specific location under the SdkToolsPath and that the Microsoft Windows SDK is installed This is so weird! If I remove FR-fr part, it will work, but there will be no translation of course. I went to that directory and found out that I don't have al.exe there. I managed to find it in .NET 2 folder, but after copying it didn't help. It throws an exception. I tried to reinstall .NET 4, to install Windows SDK, and it still doesn't work. Maybe I can somehow get this al.exe file?

• What could explain my partitions disappearing on a new SSD with Windows 7?

  So this morning, I had a fresh install of Windows 7 pro, on a new SSD (Patriot TorqX 128gb), which I just put in to a new Dell Studio XPS 9000. Everything was fine. I booted to windows, no problem. I go to work. 8 hours later, I come home, and I'm greeted by my boot screen complaining about no bootable devices. Windows repair from the Windows 7 pro disk says it can't fix the problem. It doesn't see any windows installs. I boot up GParted, and my SSD is completely unallocated. No space used, no partitions. Perhaps this is related to allowing windows 7 to create a utility partition when I installed? Only thing I can think of. Is there some kind of known hardware issue that can result in an SSD completely wiping itself?

• Does GetSystemInfo (on Windows) always return the number of logical processors?

  Reading up on this, and specifically reading the Microsoft docs, it looks like it should be returning the number of PHYSICAL processors, and that you should use GetLogicalProcessorInformation to figure out how many LOGICAL processors you have. When I search again, I find that MS did release some info on this (and a hot fix), here (spaces added to get through spam filter): http:// support. microsoft.com/ kb/936235 Reading that, it sounds like on Xp, pre-service Pack 3, GetSystemInfo reports the number of LOGICAL processors in the SYSTEM_INFO structure. It also reads to me that on Windows Vista and Windows 7, GetSystemInfo should be reporting the number of PHYSICAL processors (different to Windows XP pre-service Pack 3). Does anyone know what it actually does? Does GetSystemInfo really report the number of physical processors (on the same computer) differently, depending on which OS it's running on?

• Windows XP Disc: corrupt or not corrupt?

  Hi all, I just finished one of my builds and am trying to install Windows XP onto it. Here are the specs beforehand... Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.4 GHz (512KB L2, 533MHz FSB) QDI Superb 4 Motherboard 2x 1GB PC3200 DDR RAM Seagate 80GB IDE HDD Bestec 250W PSU 16MB NVIDIA TNT2 Pro Samsung DVD-ROM USB 2.0 PCI Card Generic PCI Modem The issue right now is that when I'm running through the Windows Setup from my XP Pro SP3 disc, partway through the setup says that a random file on the disc is corrupt and the computer needs to be restarted. Every time I tried booting it up, a different file was noted as corrupt. However, I tested the same disc on another computer and the Windows XP disc ran to the end of the setup screen without error. I tried this on another computer and the same thing. What could possibly be happening on this one build to cause it errors during the Windows Setup? Thanks in advance.

  Hi, I have a late-2008 unibody macbook model with 2 GB of ram. I am looking to upgrade to 4 GB of ram. I looked about a month ago at Other World Computing's 4 GB upgrade kit and I remember it being around $80. I looked today, finally getting to buy it and it went up to almost $100. I found another site, memoryupgrade.pro that calls itself "Pro memory upgrade" and it looks legitimate - it sells the memory for around $80 in its own brand. The only thing is, I haven't been able to find any reviews about it, and I'm not sure if it actually is reliable. Does anybody have any experience with this site? Does anybody have any other suggestions for buying macbook memory? I have friends who bought from OWC and were happy, should I just spend the extra $30 (including shipping) and buy from them? • Is it Possible to Increase Display Resolution for OS X Maverick

  The new OS X Maverick operating system has reduced maximum display resolution from 1920 x 1200 in Mountain Lion to 1680 x 1050, which is a SIZABLE reduction. The difference is obvious when viewing videos or photos. In addition, the colors are less vibrant. Does anyone know a way to change the display resolution for Maverick, thus restoring Mountain Lion resolution (1920 x 1200)...along with color vibrancy. By the way, I am using a 2012 Macbook Pro, with Matte display, which I think makes matters worse. At 1920 x 1200 my Macbook Pro was excellent...but at 1680 x 1050, it is very pedestrian.

  Hi all, I'm trying to paramaterize some queries in SSIS. After some reading, it sounds like my best option is to create one variable that contains my base sql, another that contains my criteria and a final variable that is evaluated as an expression that includes both of these. I want to end up with an SQL query that is effectively UPDATE mytable set something='bar' where something_else='foo' So my first two variables have the scope of my package and are as follows: Name: BaseSQL Data Type: String Value: UPDATE mytable set something = 'bar' where something_else = Name: MyVariable Data Type: String Value: foo My third variable has a scope of the data flow task where I want to use this SQL and is as follows: Name: SQLQuery Data Type: String Value: @[User::BaseSQL] + "'" + @[User::MyVariable] + "'" EvaluateAsExpression: True In the OLE DB Source, I then choose my connection and 'SQL command from variable' and select User::SQLQuery from the dropdown box. The Variable Value window then displays the following: @[User::BaseSQL] + "'" + @[User::MyVariable] + "'" This is as desired, and would provide the output I want from my DB. The variable name dropdown also contains User::BaseSQL and User::MyVariable so I believe that my namespaces are correct. However, when I then click preview, I get the following error when configuring an OLE DB Source (using SQL command from variable): TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio Error at Set runtime in DB [Set runtime in myDb DB [1]]: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. • Unable to delete all partitions on flash drive using Windows 7 OS??

  Recently I purchased an ADATA C802 8GB flash drive. Since the drive was new I decided to run some of the HD Tune Pro (v4.50) performance tests on it, mostly just for the heck of it. To avoid accidently destroying data HD Tune refuses to write to a drive unless there are no partitions on the drive. If you do attempt to write to a drive with partitions, it posts the message "Writing is disabled. To enable writing please remove all partitions." As you would expect, the ADATA came formatted with a single primary FAT32 partition in the Master Boot Record. But a number of unexpected things happened when I attempted to delete that partition. The first thing I tried was to use the Windows 7 (64-bit) Disk Management tool (diskmgmt.msc) to delete the partition. It would not let me. The context menu choice to delete that volume was not available. Next I opened up a command prompt window with Admin authority and ran diskpart. Diskpart deleted the volume for me. However, when I attempted to run an HD Tune write test on the drive I still got the "Writing is disabled" message. Huh??? So I fired up a utility I have which allows viewing drives at the sector level and verified that the partition table in the Master Boot Record was empty. No partitions. Yet HD Tune still thought there were partitions on the drive? So why was I still getting the "Writing is disabled" message from HD Tune Pro? And why wouldn't the Windows 7 Disk Management tool let me change the partitions on this drive. After doing the above, I plugged the ADATA into my MacBook. I was then able to format it as either a GPT or MBR partitioned drive with no problems. I am not looking for suggestions on how to format this drive. I can do that. What I do not understand and was hoping I might get insight into is why this drive behaves so strangely under Windows 7? And BTW, what's up with HD Tune Pro? BTW, if I plug the drive I formatted on my MacBook back into my Windows 7 64-bit system I still run into road blocks with the Disk Management tool. For example, I cannot delete all the GPT partitions on the ADATA so I can convert it into an MBR drive. I following Microsoft's instructions, the instructions just do not work with this ADATA flash drive. Anyone know what's up with this? It makes no sense to me. Has something changed in Windows 7 (Vista)??

  I've just taken an existing XP Pro 32 bit system that had only 0.5GB of memory installed and maxed it out to 4GB. The BIOS reports the 4GB ram however when XP is booted and I look at the computer properties only 2GB of RAM is reported. Can anyone explain this? Before we go up any blind allys the /3GB switch is not the answer here, I have no need for a single process to use more the 2GB of memory. I'm wondering if the the 32 bit XP Pro is deliberately limited to 2GB. I seem to remember seeing an excellent table on a Microsoft site listing all the various SKUs of Windows and what each one was limited to. However I can't seem to find that table now.
