• Actionscript not running in nested MovieClips in Swf loaded into AIR app.

  I'm loading content swfs into an Air App. The swfs are loaded into the non-app sandbox, and any communication is via the parent/child sandbox bridge. The swfs have timeline code. This code executes fine. The swfs also have mcs on the timeline - any code inside these mcs, or any child mcs of these mcs, is ignored. Simple traces do not execute below the top level timeline of the loaded swfs. I have tried naming the child mcs. I have tried exporting them in the library. Neither makes any difference. When I run the swf standalone, I see my diagnostic traces. When I load the swf, I only see the traces for the top level timeline. Air app is v1.5 Any clues? I've been bashing into this brick wall for several hours now...

• Avoiding string copying in Lua

  Say I have a C program which wants to call a very simple Lua function with two strings (let's say two comma separated lists, returning true if the lists intersect at all, false if not). The obvious way to do this is to push them onto the stack with lua_pushstring, which works fine, however, from the doc it looks like lua_pushstring but makes a copy of the string for Lua to work with. That means that to cross over to the Lua function is going to require two string copies which I could avoid by rewriting the Lua function in C. Is there any way to arrange things so that the existing C strings could be reused on the Lua side for the sake of performance (or would the strcpy cost pale into insignificance anyway)? From my investigation so far (my first couple of hours looking seriously at Lua), lite userdata seems like the sort of thing I want, but in the form of a string.

• Filling a screen width

  I'm really struggling to tidy up a web site I am building for someone. I've spent hours on trying to figure this out! I have limited knowledge so the code would be helpful. They want the section at the top (originally two images, now I'm trying background images and css) to fill the width of the browser- no matter what size it is. Does anyone know how to do this? Similarly, is there a setting to get text to fill 100% width of the box, no matter what? I would seriously appreciate even someone helping me move on a step! they want everything to sit tight and inline, in some browsers/screens it does but on mine it spreads out with lots of white space. www.thegees.co.uk is the site.

• Mobile web on nokia devices not displaying centain elements

  So i have a site which is rendered with our in-house portal engine. It resizes images and adjusts style-sheets automatically in real-time. Issue is that some html elements are inexplicably disappearing due to what only can be described as HTML compatibility. But the problem is not consistent. And only seems to be an issue on some nokia devices. I have tried to install the Nokia Mobile Browser Emulator... but its the worst piece of software i have seen in my life... after 4 hours of installing and uninstalling different versions of JRE, i still can't get it to install. • Android: Change activity state when receiving a phone call

  Hi. A problem came up in my latest android programming project. The problem is I would like to change Activity that launches when the phone receives a call. Is it possible to add some text after the contact name when a call is received. I have search the web for something that could do that, and been looking in the API for hours and I cannot find anything, is it possible with reflection of something like that? I have made a class that listens to when the phone_state is receiving a call, and I can get the incomming number, but I would like to change the appearance on the screen. // Thanks in advance

  hi, i need to run a really long php script (four and half, five hours). the script sometimes runs successfully, but sometimes gets killed inexplicably (poss something to do with the shared hosting??). i think that the solution maybe to run the script is smaller chunks. in order to do this i have written a script that stores it's status & position in an xml file, and executes one chunk of the script, before moving the position on. i am having problems hooking up the last bit of the script, which should end the current process & re-execute the script. or maybe i am barking up the wrong tree completely! i have read through what i can find on SO and elsewhere but i'm still none the wiser :( please help!!! dan

• System.Timers.Timer leaking due to "direct delegate roots"

  Apologies for the rather verbose and long-winded post, but this problem's been perplexing me for a few weeks now so I'm posting as much information as I can in order to get this resolved quickly. We have a WPF UserControl which is being loaded by a 3rd party app. The 3rd party app is a presentation application which loads and unloads controls on a schedule defined by an XML file which is downloaded from a server. Our control, when it is loaded into the application makes a web request to a web service and uses the data from the response to display some information. We're using an MVVM architecture for the control. The entry point of the control is a method that is implementing an interface exposed by the main app and this is where the control's configuration is set up. This is also where I set the DataContext of our control to our MainViewModel. The MainViewModel has two other view models as properties and the main UserControl has two child controls. Depending on the data received from the web service, the main UserControl decides which child control to display, e.g. if there is a HTTP error or the data received is not valid, then display child control A, otherwise display child control B. As you'd expect, these two child controls bind two separate view models each of which is a property of MainViewModel. Now child control B (which is displayed when the data is valid) has a RefreshService property/field. RefreshService is an object that is responsible for updating the model in a number of ways and contains 4 System.Timers.Timers; a _modelRefreshTimer a _viewRefreshTimer a _pageSwitchTimer a _retryFeedRetrievalOnErrorTimer (this is only enabled when something goes wrong with retrieving data). I should mention at this point that there are two types of data; the first changes every minute, the second changes every few hours. The controls' configuration decides which type we are using/displaying. If data is of the first type then we update the model quite frequently (every 30 seconds) using the _modelRefreshTimer's events. If the data is of the second type then we update the model after a longer interval. However, the view still needs to be refreshed every 30 seconds as stale data needs to be removed from the view (hence the _viewRefreshTimer). The control also paginates the data so we can see more than we can fit on the display area. This works by breaking the data up into Lists and switching the CurrentPage (which is a List) property of the view model to the right List. This is done by handling the _pageSwitchTimer's Elapsed event. Now the problem My problem is that the control, when removed from the visual tree doesn't dispose of it's timers. This was first noticed when we started getting an unusually high number of requests on the web server end very soon after deploying this control and found that requests were being made at least once a second! We found that the timers were living on and not stopping hours after the control had been removed from view and that the more timers there were the more requests piled up at the web server. My first solution was to implement IDisposable for the RefreshService and do some clean up when the control's UnLoaded event was fired. Within the RefreshServices Dispose method I've set Enabled to false for all the timers, then used the Stop() method on all of them. I've then called Dispose() too and set them to null. None of this worked. After some reading around I found that event handlers may hold references to Timers and prevent them from being disposed and collected. After some more reading and researching I found that the best way around this was to use the Weak Event Pattern. Using this blog and this blog I've managed to work around the shortcomings in the Weak Event pattern. However, none of this solves the problem. Timers are still not being disabled or stopped (let alone disposed) and web requests are continuing to build up. Mem Profiler tells me that "This type has N instances that are directly rooted by a delegate. This can indicate the delegate has not been properly removed" (where N is the number of instances). As far as I can tell though, all listeners of the Elapsed event for the timers are being removed during the cleanup so I can't understand why the timers continue to run. Thanks for reading. • NullPointerException Java help

  Hello guys. I've been tearing my hair out the past few hours trying to solve this problem. Every time I click on a JButton which should open a JFrame(And it does), i get a stacktrace saying I have a null point exception at these bits of code: In class A i have: aButton.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { B instanceofB = new B(userSession.getBalance()); }); and Class B super.getSomeBtn().setVisible(false); This is where the stacktrace says the errors are in the two above sections. I have a line exactly the same as the one above in Class B and it works fine? Really stuck here!

• Massive speed diff in upgrade to Java 7

  We use Java within our build process, as it is used to resolve/publish our dependencies via Ivy. No problem, nor have we had with it for 2 years, until we've tried to upgrade Java 6 Update 26 to Version 7 Update 7, whereas a build on a local developer PC (WinXP) now takes 2 hours to complete, instead of 10 minutes!! Nothing else has changed on the PC, making it the absolute target for our concerns. Does anyone know of any reason as to why version 7 of Java would make such a speed difference like this?

• Why would this line throw exception for type initializer failed?

  I had a class: public class Constant { public static string ConnString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnString"].ConnectionString; } which would throw exception on LIVE: Type initialize failed for Constant ctor If I change the class to: public class Constant { public static string ConnString { get { return ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnString"].ConnectionString; } } } it works. I wasted 2 hours behind this but I still don't know why would this happen. Any ideas? Note: The 1st class used to work on DEV environment but not on LIVE. The 2nd class works on DEV and also on Production. I am using VS2010 on production and Asp.Net 4.0 Website project. I am totally amazed by this inconsistency to say the least! Edit: This class was in App_Code folder.

• How can I make Ruby rake display the full backtrace on uncaught exception

  As you may know rake swallows the full backtrace on uncaught exception. If I want to have a full backtrace, I need to add the --trace option. I find this very annoying because some of my tasks take long time to run (up to 6 hours), when it crashes I don't have any debugging info. I need to run it again with the --trace. On top of that, the system may not be in the same state as when the error occurred, so it may not show afterward. I always have to add --trace on any tasks. This displasy stuff that I don't want to see when the task is executed. Is there a way to change this default behaviour? (which I don't think is useful at all)

• Including javascript files from other projects inside the same solution

  I have a project called WebResources where I have all the JS files that I intend to use in 2 other projects (all three projects sit in the same solution). I just spent 2 hours playing around with the file paths and VS just doesn't see the JS file (unless I specify the full path with the drive letter). Is there a trick to including javascript files relatively from other projects? My file structure is something like: Project1 Default.aspx Project2 WebResourcesProject /js testToInclude.js No matter how I try to include testToInclude.js inside Default.aspx, VS doesn't see it. Any ideas?

• Python - werid behavior

  I've done what I shouldn't have done and written 4 modules (6 hours or so) without running any tests along the way. I have a method inside of /mydir/__init__.py called get_hash(), and a class inside of /mydir/utils.py called SpamClass. /mydir/utils.py imports get_hash() from /mydir/__init__. /mydir/__init__.py imports SpamClass from /mydir/utils.py. Both the class and the method work fine on their own but for some reason if I try to import /mydir/, I get an import error saying "Cannot import name get_hash" from /mydir/__init__.py. The only stack trace is the line saying that __init__.py imported SpamClass. The next line is where the error occurs in in SpamClass when trying to import get_hash. Why is this?

• Crystal Report Function for converting Seconds to Timespan format.

  I have a crystal report where it shows the Agent's activities throughout the day with a pie chart. In the details section it is displaying: Activity [string] StartedAt [DateTime] EndedAt [DateTime] Duration [The difference between EndedAt and StartedAt in seconds - Integer] Report data is GroupedBy Activity and summarized by Duration. Currently Duration is shown in seconds but I need to format it 02h:30m:22s:15ms. For that I wrote a custom function in Crystal Report in the Formula Workshop editor as follows, but it looks like the syntax is not right (Error message on keyword Long: "A variable type (for example, 'String') is missing."). Can someone help? • What the performance of Festival TTS vs FreeTTS on windows platforms?

  9 hours ago I had the wonderful idea to build up from scratch Festival TTS on Windows. In the meanwhile, and in less than 30 minutes, I build up the same source code on Linux, but only because tons of development tools were already installed :D Also this morning I downloaded FreeTTS. I started a simple testing project in less of 10 minutes, thanks to the Java power :D. Unfortunately FreeTTS does not provide immediate support for international mbrola languages, so this morning I thinked "it needs too much work"... Backing to Festival TTS on Windows, after many obstacles, and tons of wrong downloads, CYGWIN before, then "make" and other exotic C++ tools "forgotten" in the installation of CYGWIN, then Visual Studio 2008, then Windows Platform SDK 2008, but it lacks of System.h, so just now I am downloading Windows Server Platform SDK 2003, etc... So now, as I am yet here without having compiled a single line of damned C-- code, my question is: at least Festival TTS is a good choice on Windows for Java development?

Physics, Chemistry, and Biology have an abundance of such demonstrations, however as a computer scientist, I have no good ideas of what I can present to these students which will demonstrate computer programming and computers in an understandable yet inspiring way in only a 1 - 3 hour presentation. • RewriteRule being greedy

  I have been looking for an answer for a few hours now, so sorry if this was asked a ton of times, I missed it. I basically want to make a rewrite to ignore the first directory. That first dir in the path will be different so I thought I could use a regex. But my regex is matching all the way to the file name: RewriteRule ^([a-z]+)?/(.+)$ $2 [L] this works if I am one level deep: http://test.domain.com/one/index.php I get the actual index page of the root. Which is what I want. but if I were to go deeper: http://test.domain.com/one/two/index.php I get a message saying /index.php was not found. So it seems my regex is not stopping after the last [a-z]. I appreciate any help. This is Apache2 if that matters at all.

  Pretend I have a cupcake_rating table: id | cupcake | delicious_rating -------------------------------------------- 1 | Strawberry | Super Delicious 2 | Strawberry | Mouth Heaven 3 | Blueberry | Godly 4 | Blueberry | Super Delicious I want to find all the cupcakes that have a 'Super Delicious' AND 'Mouth Heaven' rating. I feel like this is easily achievable using a group by clause and maybe a having. I was thinking: select distinct(cupcake) from cupcake_rating group by cupcake having delicious_rating in ('Super Delicious', 'Mouth Heaven') I know I can't have two separate AND statements. I was able to achieve my goal using: select distinct(cupcake) from cupcake_rating where cupcake in ( select cupcake from cupcake_rating where delicious_rating = 'Super Delicious' ) and cupcake in ( select cupcake from cupcake_rating where delicious_rating = 'Mouth Heaven' ) This will not be satisfactory because once I add a third type of rating I am looking for, the query will take hours (there are a lot of cupcake ratings).

Does anyone know what was happening?

• jQuery timer, ajax, and "nice time"

  So for this is what I've got: $(document).ready(function () { $("#div p").load("/update/temp.php"); function addOne() { var number = parseInt($("#div p").html()); return number + 1; } setInterval(function () { $("#div p").text(addOne()); }, 1000); setInterval(function () { $("#geupdate p").load("/update/temp.php");} ,10000); }); So this grabs a a UNIX timestamp from temp.php and puts into into #div p, and then adds 1 to it every second, and then every 10 seconds it will check the original file to keep it up to speed. My problem is that I need to format this UNIX timestamp into a format such as "1 day 3 hours 56 minutes and 3 seconds ago", while also doing all the incrementation and ajax calls. I'm not very experienced with jquery/javascript, so I might be missing something basic.

• Jquery Basic Beginner Question: How do i make my function reusable?

  I have spent the last few hours attempting to do this on my own, and using Google to find a solution but to no avail. So if you can help out i would super appreciate it! Basically I have a page which has 3 separate biographies in 'preview mode', which shows only the first paragraph of each bio. When you click on 'read more' for one bio it opens up the 'full mode'. What is happening at the moment, is if i click on one 'read more' link, it opens up the full mode on all 3 bio's. • PHP Extension (memcache|memcached) not showing in phpinfo() but showing in php -m and php -i?

  I am getting both modules listed as installed / configured when I use: php -m or if I use: php -i but when I use: $m = new Memcache; // or $m = new Memcache(); // or $m = new Memcached(); //or $m = new Memcached; I get the following error: Fatal error: Class 'Memcached' not found I am running on a Mac - OS X (10.5.7) with default install of apache & php. Additionally, I have memcached running as a daemon on 127.0.0.1:11211 and libmemcache as required by the php-memcached library. I have restarted apache tons of times and even done a machine restart. Does anyone know why the modules/extensions show up in the command line but not in my phpinfo()? I am literally stumped, after 3 hours of googling, I am just about ready to give up.

  Hi guys, i'm using the jquery cookie plugin. Everything works fine except the fact that I have no idea how to set an expiration-time for the cookie? $.cookie('opt_visible', 'true'); the jquery-cookie documentation says: hoursToLive (DEPRECATED for expiresAt) NUMBER For how many hours should the cookie be valid? (Passing 0 means to delete the cookie at the end of the browser session--this is default. Negative values will delete the cookie, but you should use the del() method instead.) That's exactly what I'd like to have. The cookie should be available as long as i'm browsing the site. As soon as i close the window or browsertab, the cookie should be deleted. How can i implement this hoursToLive thingy to my mentioned line above? Thank you
