• Additional spaces in String having read text file to String using FileInputStream

  Hi, I'm trying to read in a text file to a String variable. The text file has multiple lines. Having printed the String to test the "read-in" code, there is an additional space between every character. As I am using the String to generate character bigrams, the spaces are making the sample text useless. • Turning off IE8 Compatibility Mode, Good or Bad?

  Hopefully this question isn't as subjective as I think it may be. I have an Intranet application which needs to work with IE8 as the enterprise is replacing IE6 as the standard browser. Our testing team found that it did not work in IE8, little did they know that it actually did. Their browsers were set to run IE8 in compatibility mode for Intranet applications. I found that if I set the meta tag for X-UA-Compatible to IE=EmulateIE8 that I could force the browser to render this application as IE8 and the application worked fine. Are there any pitfalls that I don't know about for this solution? If so, is there a better solution?

• Make a service monitor and restart process

  Hi, i'm making an app that needs to be up and running at all times. (24/7) I'm not very expirienced with services, but I read on the internet that services can be made uncolasble by setting their "onclose" property to false. I have got the service monitoring my app, and the service can't be closed directly from the task manager services window... but, when I click "go to process" task manager leads me to the process the service spawned. From there I can close the process and instantly close the service. Since I don't have much expirience with services i'm wondering, is this behavior normal? If not, how to make the service unstopable?

  Hello all, I just created my own "Home" to replace the stock android one or Sense. All is working fine and I get all I want. My only problem is to replace to long press on home key ( that usually show the last 6 activities you launched) by my own launcher.   Background I am developing an application (with Spring MVC) with its base path as: http://localhost:8080/myapplication/ I have a stylesheet /css/style.css that I am trying to refer with absolute path in a JSP as: <link rel="stylesheet" href="/css/style.css" type="text/css" media="screen, projection"> Problem The stylesheet never loads in the browser. When I follow the stylesheet link through browser's view source feature, the link appears to be: http://localhost:8080/css/style.css Which should have had been: http://localhost:8080/myapplication/css/style.css I used to fix this issue with html:rewrite tag while working with Struts. Is there any equivalent tag/technique in Spring MVC? Thanks for your time.

• How to run batched WCF service calls in Silverlight BackgroundWorker

  Is there any existing plumbing to run WCF calls in batches in a BackgroundWorker? Obviously since all Silverlight WCF calls are async - if I run them all in a backgroundworker they will all return instantly. I just don't want to implement a nasty hack if theres a nice way to run service calls and collect the results. Doesnt matter what order they are done in All operations are independent I'd like to have no more than 5 items running at once Edit: i've also noticed (when using Fiddler) that no more than about 7 calls are able to be sent at any one time. Even when running out-of-browser this limit applies. Is this due to my default browser settings - or configurable also. obviously its a poor man's solution (and not suitable for what i want) but something I'll probably need to take account of to make sure the rest of my app remains responsive if i'm running this as a background task and don't want it using up all my connections.

• Flex HTMLLoader component not raising mouseDown events for all mouse clicks

  I have built a Air 2/Flex 4 kiosk application with Flash Builder 4. Currently I am implementing a touch screen browser to enable users to navigate company training videos. In an attempt to improve the usability of the website on the touchscreen I have placed the HTML component in an adaption of Doug McCune's DragScrollingCanvas (updated to use the flex 4 'Scroller' component) to allow users to scroll the webpage by dragging their finger across the screen. The mouseDown event is used to start scrolling the viewport. In addition the webpage was modified to disable text selection with the following css: html { -webkit-user-select: none; cursor: default; } The problem I face is that the HTMLLoader component only fires a mouseDown if a link/input/button on the webpage is clicked, not when the background or any text is clicked. In addition if I remove the custom css the mouseDown event will not fire when text is being selected, but will if previously highlighted text is clicked. As an alternative I also tried adding a group container with the same dimensions as the HTMLLoader to detect the mouseDown events (so that the group container and HTMLLoader have the same Dragable parent container) and was able to capture mouseDown events and scroll the viewport as expected. However as the mouse event is handled by the group container, I am now unable to navigate the webpage. Does anybody know why the HTMLLoader component is not raising mouseDown events for all mouse clicks?

  Hello, I have this code that saves a pdf file. FileStream fs = new FileStream(SaveLocation, FileMode.Create); fs.Write(result.DocumentBytes, 0, result.DocumentBytes.Length); fs.Flush(); fs.Close(); It works fine. However sometimes it does not release the lock right away and that causes file locking exceptions with functions run after this one run. Is there a ideal way to release the file lock right after the fs.Close() thanks!

• nServiceBus with large XML messages

  Hello, I have read about the true messaging and that instead of sending payload on the bus, it sends an identifier. In our case, we have a lot of legacy apps/services and those were designed to receive the payload of messages (xml) that is close to 4MB (close MSMQ limit). Is there a way for nService bus to handle large payload and persist messages automatically or another work-around, so that the publisher/subscriber services don't have to worry neither about the payload size, nor about how to de/re-hydrate the payload? • What might cause the big overhead of making a HttpWebRequest call?

  When I send/receive data using HttpWebRequest (on Silverlight, using the HTTP POST method) in small blocks, I measure the very small throughput of 500 bytes/s over a "localhost" connection. When sending the data in large blocks, I get 2 MB/s, which is some 5000 times faster. Does anyone know what could cause this incredibly big overhead? Update: I did the performance measurement on both Firefox 3.6 and Internet Explorer 7. Both showed similar results. Update: The Silverlight client-side code I use is essentially my own implementation of the WebClient class. The reason I wrote it is because I noticed the same performance problem with WebClient, and I thought that the HttpWebRequest would allow to tweak the performance issue. Regrettably, this did not work. • CSS div/overflow Question: Why does the first HTML file work but not the second?

  Notice how the first HTML/CSS works when you re-size the browser horizontally. It will shrink no further than around 800 pixels, but it will expand as far as you drag the right edge of the browser. It will also correctly overflow the table at the top and scroll it horizontally. The thing I don't like about the first code snippet is where the scrollbar is. I want it to show up within the borders of the fieldset, so even if I narrow the browser down to 800 pixels wide, I can see both the left and right sides of the fieldset's border. The second code snippet is exactly the same as the first except I add another div tag to the mix, inside of the field set and around the grid. Notice how the top fieldset's width won't correctly shrink when you make the viewport of your browser narrower. Any ideas on why it doesn't work, what I can do to get it to work like the first code snippet? I don't think I'm describing this clearly, but if you run the two side by side, and expand and contract the horizontal edge of your browser windows, you'll see the differences between the two. I'm pretty new to CSS and HTML layout, so my understanding of why CSS handles sizing the way it does in some situations is still really confusing to me. • Listview navigation behaviour in an xbap versus a standalone app

  Hello, I have an wpf application which contains a listview. When the application runs as a standalone I can navigate through the list with the arrow up and the arrow down keys on the keyboard. When the application is deployed as an XBAP and runs in a browser window I can do this too but when I for example reach the top element and press the up arrow key one more time the focus jumps to the url bar in the browser. Does anyone know if there’s an easy way to prevent this? Thanks.

As I understand it, in a traditional java "website" a user provides a username & password, and upon validation a jsessionid is assigned to the user (client browser). Every time the client browser asks the website for something, the site checks for the jsessionid ensuring that the user is registered and authenticated. Is there a web services equivalent of this? I find WebKit a good option to implement my crawler, since it has all the needed technology (Javascript engine, parsers, DOM manipulation, etc.) but it seems kind of an overkill being a fully featured browser. Normally we would run all the save commands (Save is an example) synchronously and then close the form. We would like to now split the work onto separate threads using backgroundworker. We will loop through each "Save" required (could be many and/or different number of commands that need executing) creating a BackgroundWorker for each command required. The question is ... how do we wait for ALL the BackgroundWorkers to complete before we close the form. We understand how to wait for a single BackgroundWorker to complete but when we have X number of BackgroundWorkers operating, how do we wait until all are complete before closing the UI form?

But i don't think I am getting this far. The armoury has a cross domain policy file on it - this may be the cause of the error (not sure! I have uploaded to a production server I am testing it locally using IIS website I am going insane! Websites have made the suggestion that this problem can be overcome by creating a WebProxy - but I haven't the first clue how to do this. It would be great if someone could take on this challenge and show us all that it is possible. I'd prefer a non-proxy solution first, then try a proxy.   I've got a controller action that returns a FileResult like this return this.File("file.pdf", "application/pdf"); for the URL "/Download/322" - where 322 is the id of the file. This works great, so that if a user clicks on a link to the PDF - it will open in their web browser as long as they have a PDF plugin installed. But, what if they right-click the link and choose "Save as..."? The browser pops up with the filename as "322." I'd like to have a better filename at this point, by doing something like this: return this.File("file.pdf", "application/pdf", "file.pdf"); But if I change the controller to return like that, then it will always pop up the download box, since MVC is setting the Content-Disposition header to attachment (so I can't embed the file). In summary, can I somehow detect that the user is trying to download the file vs. the file is just being embedded in something on the page?

• XML Socket and Regular Socket in Flash/Flex does not send message immediately.

  I am trying to build a basic RIA where my Flex application client opens an XML socket, sends the xml message "people_list" to server, and prints out the response. I have ruby at the server side and I have successfully set up the security policy stuff. The ruby xml server, successfully accepts the connections from Flex, successfully detects when they are closed and can also send messages to client. But; there is a problem... It cannot receive messages from flex client. The messages sent from flex client are queued and sent as one package when the socket is closed. Therefore, the whole wait-for-request-then-reply thing is not working... This is also -kinda- mentioned in the XMLSocket.send() document, where it is stated that the messages are sent async so; they may be delivered at any time in future. But; I need them to be synced, flushed or whatever. • HP SmartArray P212 with non HP disks, Insight Diagnostics error

  I have an ML110 G6 with a SmartArray P212 and two Seagate (non-HP) SAS disks in Raid 1. When I ran HP Insight Diagnostics I got some errors related to S.M.A.R.T. error testing and I would like to confirm that this is due to the controller not being able to query the drives as they are non-HP. I believe that the drives are not failing, but I want to be sure. Please have a look at these screenshots I took from the Insight Diagnostics report:

• How to define bold, italic using @font-face

  I'm looking at the MDC page for the @font-face CSS rule, but I don't get one thing. I have separate files for bold, italic and bold + italic, how can I embed all three files in one @font-face rule? For example, if I have: @font-face { font-family: "DejaVu Sans"; src: url("./fonts/DejaVuSans.ttf") format("ttf"); } strong { font-family: "DejaVu Sans"; font-weight: bold; } The browser will not know what font to use for bold (because that files is DejaVuSansBold.ttf), so it will default to something I probably don't want. How can I tell the browser all the different variants I have for a certain font?
