• Stream audio to mobile device

  I'd like to stream the audio from Ubuntu 10.10 to my HTC Desire HD (Android 2.2). I've seen solutions so far for streaming from audio players, but I'd like to stream any audio output from the PC to my phone. My use case is for watching TV/Films in VLC or online (BBC iPlayer) in bed, without having to use my surround sound system which is likely to wake up my house mates. I'm not just talking about music from Banshee, but any audio that the system makes. I was thinking that PulseAudio is pretty powerful, is it possible to route audio through that to a mobile device? Can it be done through bluetooth? Cheers in advance!

• Healthcare Mobile Database Synchronization Demonstration

  Like many of you, I learn best by getting my hands dirty.  When confronted with the task of understanding a new set of products and technologies and figuring out how they might apply to a vertical industry like healthcare, I set out to create a demonstration.  The video that follows aims to show how the Oracle embedded software portfolio can be applied to a healthcare application.  The demonstration utilizes among others, Java SE Embedded, Berkeley DB, Apache Tomcat, Oracle 11gR2 and Oracle Database Mobile Server. Eric Jensen gives a great critique and description of the demo here.  To sum it up, we aim to show how live medical data can be collected on a medical device, stored in a local database, synchronized to a master database and furthermore propagated to a mobile phone (Android) application.  Come take a look!

• How can I install the latest version of libmtp?

  In the latest version of the libmtp library there are fixes for my Android device so I would like to install the latest version I'm just not sure how! I would assume that this would pushed into the official repositories at some point, so the smart advice would probably be just to wait, but I would like to know how to do this myself if anyone could tell me. I'm currently using Ubuntu 12.04 and am running libmtp-1.1.2, the latest version (libmtp-1.1.3) has recently been released and the tar.gz file is downloadable from this direct link: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/libmtp/libmtp/1.1.3/libmtp-1.1.3.tar.gz How do I install this?   I am looking for some resources on the JVM bytecode. Ideally I would for a short book; something more than a blog post but not a 800 pages tome. If it is relevant, I am a Scala developer, not a Java one, although I know Java just fine. I would like something that allowed me to read JVM bytecode and answer questions such as: Why does the bytecode has to know about high level construct such as classes? Are subtyping relations still visible in bytecode? How does type erasure work exactly? How do Oracle and Dalvik bytecode differ, and what consequences does this have for, say, developing Android apps with Scala? How does the JVM manage the stack, and why exactly this creates issues with tail call elimination? and so on.

For example, many times I hear about Intel contributing to patches for the Linux Kernel like the RC6 latest patches and any other related to the recent Sandy/Ivy Bridges. In another group, Android did an upstream patch and a lot of ARM patches have also come to the Linux Kernel. I have seeing only a small percent of companies and groups that have contributed to the Linux Kernel (http://kernel.org) but I want to know, since the beginning of Ubuntu till now, what has Ubuntu contributed to the Linux Kernel in regards to any aspect of the kernel. • Beggining OpenGL vs beggining DirectX and some question about the philosophical difference between them

  I'm begginning with Direct X at school, and my teacher said it was harder to begin with than OpenGL, but I read several things that in fact, Direct X was more advanced than OpenGL in terms of recent graphic cards features. Since I'm far from wanting to do top notch effects, which can already be implemented with existing engines and/or shaders, I wanted to know your opinion: Can OpenGL be considered like a more basic, KISS, hardware agnostic, graphic library to just do 3D with acceleration, and consider DirectX like a top notch, game-oriented graphic API that will always support the next-gen 3D chips ? Citation from wikipedia on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Id_Tech_5 : John Carmack mentioned in his keynote at QuakeCon 2007 that the id Tech 5 engine will not be using the DirectX 10 API. I don't want to seem like I'm minding open source because Carmack does and because he is famous, it's just that android and iPhone are out there, and Direct X doesn't seems to me to be the necessary API to know, since Windows supports OpenGL, and since the 360 is just a console among other consoles.

• In which object should I implement wait()/notify()?

  I'm working in an Android project with multithreading. Basically I have to wait to the server to respond before sending more data. The data sending task is delimited by the flag boolean hasServerResponded so the Thread will loop infinitely without doing anything until the flag becomes true. Since this boolean isn't declared as volatile (yet), and also looping without doing anything wastes resources, I thought maybe I should use AtomicBoolean and also implement wait() / notify() mechanism. Should I use the AtomicBoolean object notify() and wait() methods or should I create a lock Object?

• Setting up ubuntu as a wireless accesspoint

  I have an android phone which doesn't connect to ad-hoc networks. I use ad-hoc network to share internet among my pcs. I want to setup my ubuntu laptop as a wireless access point. But I don't want my ubuntu laptop to be a router as described here as I'll be using suid3 as a http proxy. It should be just a wireless accesspoint which broadcasts it's SSID like a home wireless router. The ubuntu laptop has athros wireless card which requires athk9 driver.

• Can empathy be configured to stay updated will a full conversation?

  The Google Talk web app and Android app will always update themselves with all messages sent from all clients and I was wondering if Empathy can be configured to do this. For example, if I start a conversation on my phone and then change to my PC an use the web app, all the messages I sent will show up in the IM window on the PC even though I sent them when I was on my phone. Empathy does not behave this way. It only shows the IMs that occurred when using Empathy. If Empathy cannot do this, is there another client that can?

• How to merge two .iso images

  I am following this tutorial to install Android onto my computer VIA Virtual Box. My problem is, they want you to download liveandroidv0.3.iso.001 liveandroidv0.3.iso.002 then they want you to merge these two files with cat liveandroidv0.3.iso.001 liveandroidv0.3.iso.002 > liveandroidv0.3.iso in the Terminal. The problem is, when I run the command, I get the following output cat liveandroidv0.3.iso.001 liveandroidv0.3.iso.002 > liveandroidv0.3.iso cat: liveandroidv0.3.iso.001: No such file or directory cat: liveandroidv0.3.iso.002: No such file or directory So, I was wondering if there was an alternative way to merge these files? Or if you guy's could help me merge them this way? Extra info: OS: Ubuntu 12.10 I downloaded the files to my /downloads folder in my home directory.

• Web development for people who mainly do client side..

  Okay, I'm sure there are a lot of us that has plenty of experience developing c++/opengl/objective C on the iPhone, java development on android, python games, etc (any client side stuff) while having little to no experience on web-based development. So what skillset should one learn in order to be able to work on web projects, say, to make a facebook clone (I kid), or maybe a startup that specializes on connecting random fashionistas with pics etc. I actualy do have some experience with C#/VB.net back-end development a while back, but as part of a team, I had a lot of support from the senior devs. Is C# considered a decent web development language?
