  not exactly sure where I should post this but I have a question about filing for software patents. If I have an idea for a UI feature, how do I go about patenting that feature. I don't have any code written and I'm afraid my coding skills aren't up to snuff in order to code the thing I imagined but aside from that, can anyone give me any general guidance and info? I've gone through the CIPO site (Canada's patent office) but haven't come away with enough information on what I'm trying to patent but what I have understood is that I have to very thorough in describing what I'm trying to patent and showing that it could work. If anyone has gone through the process of patenting software, can you tell me about your experience? I would like to hear about US and Canadian experiences Thank you!

• Geographic location settings

  I am building an website. It has an .nl domain. Now only my domain is showing up on google.nl I hope I can change this somehow that it could be findable in all google's (like google.com / co.uk) and so on. If I look on google forums. They say go to webmaster tools and change your geographic position over there. But I have added this site and I am not able to change it there because there is no select box. I dont have any idea were to search (yes I searched on google offcourse) or where to ask for this special problem. So maybe here can someone redirect me or explain me what is possible and what not.   Hi, We have a asp.net MVC3 based web app which uses SQL SERVER 2008 for database. Also, we have a client side desktop application which also uses SQL SERVER 2008. While developing the system, we are able to Sync tables using SQL SERVER Replication feature. Now, we want to host our site on a webserver but we are clueless about it. If anyone of you have a similar system working then please suggest a cheap but reliable webhost which supports Replication. Initially there will be approximately 10 or less clients who will perform replication 2 or 3 times a day. The size of the database will be less than 4GB for sure.

  Hi. We are a company that is distributed in several places over Europe (real offices). Each office has its own domain. company.de company.co.uk company.ch And so. Our website servers are located in one place. We can't distribute our site to different locations. How can we create a local IP in each location to show our main server. so google will see us as local ip. Explanation: Google has decided to increase your PR if you have a local IP, they think that if you bought a server in a local market means that you are very serious about your business. We have 8 employees in each office, we cant have a separate server, is that mean that we are not serious about our business? no, this is y i need to create this illusion. Thanks

• Ubuntu 12.04 I'm trying to ugrade my Geforce 8400 to Geforce GTX 560, getting a black screen

  I have an NVidia Geforce 8400 which is working fine in Ubuntu 12.04. I have just purchased an NVidia GeForce GTX 560 and have been trying to install it. No matter what I do all I get is a black screen on boot up. I have tried; 1/ Additional Drivers, driver version 295.40, this works for the GeForce 8400 but gives me a black screen with the GTX 560 when I boot. 2/ Downloaded driver version 295.40 from NVidias site, was able to install it successfully, it works with my 8400 but gives me a black screen with the GTX 560 when I boot. Are there any options I can try?

  I am having an e-commerce site and current URL structure is like this: www.example.com/category1 [Category landing page] www.example.com/category1/sub-category [sub-category listing page] www.example.com/category1/sub-category/product-name [Product Details page] I am finding it difficult to identify from the URLs whether the URL is category landing page or a listing page or a product details page (primarily in Google Analytics). To solve this problem, I am thinking of adding qualifiers in the URL as follows: www.example.com/category1/cat-land [Category landing page] www.example.com/category1/sub-category/cat-list [sub-category listing page] www.example.com/category1/sub-category/product-name/prod-details [Product Details page] Original URLs would be redirected to new URLs using 301 permanent redirect. Would this have any negative effect on existing SEO and Google ranking?

• Can't read CDs, can't create USB... how do I install Ubuntu?

  Hello everyone and thank you in advance for your time. I have troubles with the latest Ubuntu distribution: since I upgraded to 12.04 Ubuntu has started having troubles (internal errors, packages that crash repeatedly, I can't install new packages, Ubuntu Software Center crashes, Java apps that worked stopped working and display weird mistakes, files were corrupted... a mess). I ultimately decided to format everything and install 12.04 from scratch. I made a backup and everything, but now I have troubles installing ubuntu 12.04. Specifically, a CD I burned with Brasero that works on another PC is not read by my laptop (not at boot phase, nor inside Ubuntu), and when I try to create a USB with Ubuntu (following the instructions I found on the ubuntu site) Startup Disk Creator stops at 22% saying that "the codes do not match". Any idea on what to do next? No, I can't buy a new PC.

  From the perspective of a developer what do you consider to be the most important environmental factors or work place perks/policies that contribute to increase productivity? For example, my top four includes the following: No internet restrictions - Because honestly ever few hours I need a 15 min deload, which usually involves checking my gmail account and or browsing a few choice site. Personal office with a door - for obvious reasons Dual monitors - do people really develop software with one monitor still? Flexible hours - This could be interpreted in different ways, but basically I really appreciate that fact that I can roll into work at 7am, 11am or whenever and the time police aren't on my back. It is just understood that I will put in my 8 hours or more if needed and get my job done however that works out.

  Ubuntu 14.04.1 x64 (upgraded from 12.04) with Unity desktop Dell Latitude with NVIDIA GF119M (NVS 4200M) - Optimus is DISABLED Using NVIDIA legacy binary driver 304.117 When I set the CCSM option to allow thumbnail previews, the thumbnail 'flickers' for about 1 second before the actual thumbnail image is displayed. I don't think I had this enabled under 12.04 so not sure if it's version-specific. Should I be using a different driver (there are newer ones - Ubu shows NVIDIA binary driver 331.38 and the non-proprietary nouveau, plus NVIDIA has newer ones at the site)? TIA!

• Does Google counts backlinks from homepage to inside pages?

  I have a site with good PR and my inside pages are getting increase of PR, but they don't have links pointing to them, only from my homepage. Does that means that Google counts ALL links on my homepage, including links to inside pages? Does it calculate inside pages PR with one coming from my domain, my homepage, too? Also, if inside pages that got high PR from homepage have link back to homepage, will that increase homepage PR additionally, since those links should count too? By Google PR algorithm formula, by calculations on Wikipedia and Stanford PR algorithm explanation ( which is originally developed by ) it counts those links, and also it counts after-increase backlink again, making few times circle ( it stops because of d ( 0.85 ) factor. ), but it counts them. Does anyone know is this correct?

  I rebuilt a web app to replace a version that we have been using for the last 3-4 years. We have a few thousand clients and a few hundred active users per day. The functionality is basically the same. The new version is a little bit faster with a few enhancement features and there are a lot of behind the scenes changes that the clients will never see. The UI is quite different but ultimately much easier to use and navigate. How should I go about having our clients stop using the old system and start using the new one? I am currently putting together a video that will play on the web site as well as within the app. The video will go through the pages and focus on some key changes. I was also thinking about an intro page that will display once the user logs in and explains some of the features.

• Where is EasUS coming from?

  I have downloaded the Universal USB Installer and Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop as described on your site. I installed it to a 16Gb USB stick including the format option. Now when I try to boot from the stick into Ubuntu I get a couple of lines of script then a screen with EasUS Todo Backup with Backup. Recovery, Clone and Tools options, but no sign of Ubuntu starting. Where is the start Ubuntu option please? I can find no reference to EaseUS on your help pages.

  I got a paper template in .doc format from a conference site. Now when i work on it with libreoffice and insert image to it and insert caption for the image, after closing the file and opening it again, all images are gone. I saw that when the image Anchor is set "to frame" the image will be gone but when it is set to e.g. "to paragraph" it will maintain but it's alignment will be corrupted. Also, i need the Anchor to be set to "Frame". What can I do? I searched the net but i didn't find a good answer.

• Is NTFS-3G safe for writing?

  These days, I have to use the NTFS-3G driver to write to an NTFS drive (which will later be used in Windows). But I still remember the olde times of Linux ntfs driver which clearly said in the docs: 'If you write to an ntfs volume, run our special program afterwards which will clean up the damage done.' So, I read through the man, the docs, the Tuxera site and Askubuntu and found no discussion of the write-safety of NTFS-3G. The only thing that was mentioned somewhere is that the driver doesn't support the NTFS journal. So, the question is, can I use NTFS-3G and be sure that I will later read what I have written to the files? Won't, for example, Windows find the journal entries missing and 'clean up' the data according to its own faulty understanding?

Since my website will be targetted at programmers and mostly tech-savvy users, should I take for granted that these people will be using a modern browser?   Can anyone recommend affiliate networks that focus on B2B development. We are about to launch a UK job search engine that allows job boards to list their jobs on the engine. We have decided to keep the advertising in house, with the goal being of keeping the costs down. I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on potential advertising routes that we could take. For example B2B affiliate networks, adwords etc. We are in the position of launching an empty site and ideally we would like to be attracting recruitment agencies or businesses to signup to either a free or paid account. • How to recover organic position in Google results after server down?

  I have several sites that were doing quite well in terms of organic SEO rankings. I have the important sites setup in Google's Webmaster tools. Long story short, the system was down for about two weeks. Now in AdSense and Analytics, I am seeing that the page views are SLOWLY increasing. and I would like to know if there is anything I can do now to try to expedite the process of regaining those positions. Since there were several errors from that server, is it possible that Google will now rank any site from that IP address lower due to those two weeks of errors?
