• The Oscar of Java Programming

  Why bother nominating a peer, yourself or your company for a Duke's Choice Award? I asked Duke's Choice Award winner Fabiane Nardon, whose team won in 2005 for the Healthcare Information System they created for the Brazilian government, what it was like winning the award and if it had any impact on her career. Here's what she told me: 1) What was it like to win a Duke's Choice Award? For me it was like winning an Oscar or a Grammy :-) I think that for a Java developer, a Duke's Choice Award is probably the highest award you can get, so it was really an honor. We had an amazing team working on that project and the team really deserved it. We were all very happy when we got that email with the announcement. That moment was one of the most important moments of my career. 2) What benefits have you gotten from being a "Duke's Choice Award Winner?" I think the most important benefit you get from winning a Duke is the fact that you become known by your peers. This opens many doors, since you are approached by more people, get invitations to speak in more conferences, you meet people with the same technical interests you have and so on. I certainly benefited a lot from it. We were lucky that in 2005, when we got our award, the winners were featured in the JavaOne keynote, with short documentaries produced about each one. So, we could be on the stage and talk a little about the project. We got lots of press at the time. We see  today's winners benefiting a lot from the press coverage. 3) How is the the Brazilian Healthcare Information System project doing today? Still running and getting new features every year. I'm not involved on the project anymore, but there are good people taking care of it. We opened the code since the beginning, so different cities could use and add features to it. There are many new developers working on that code base right now and I hope they can take the whole system to a new level. 4) What are you up to these days? I worked in the healthcare field for many years and a few years ago I decided that it was time to move on and take the experience I got designing large scale and mission critical systems to other fields. Since then I have been working with high access internet applications. I also co-founded ToolsCloud, a company that provides a development environment with open source tools in the cloud. We just launched ToolsCloud in USA, so other companies can get the same bundle of tools, hassle free, that several companies are successfully using in Brazil. Besides that, right now I'm personally working on the coolest project I ever worked on. It combines several technical challenges with a good dose of social impact. We should launch it in the second semester and I should keep it as a secret for now. Hopefully it will be useful to many people and disruptive enough to maybe get us a new Duke's Choice Award. • TFS Shipping Cadence

  Brian Harry has formally announced a change to the TFS shipping cadence from the traditional 2-3 years to production cycle to a more agile and refreshing minimum once in a 3 weeks cycle! The change didn’t happen over night, it was a gradual process which was greatly influenced by moving TFS to the cloud. The thinking started with trying to figure out what the team wanted.  Like people often do, the team started with what they knew and tried to evolve from there.  The team spent a few months thinking through “What if we do major releases every year and minor releases every 6 months?”,  “Major releases every 6 months, patches once a month?”, “What if we do quarterly releases – can we get the release cycle going that fast?”, etc.  The team also spent time debating what constitutes a major release VS a minor release. How much churn are customers willing to tolerate?  The team finally concluded… “When a change this big is necessary – forget where you are and just ask where you want to be and then ask what it would take to get there.” Going forward you will see, Team Foundation Service updates every 3 weeks Visual Studio Client updates quarterly (Limited to VS 2012 for now) Team Foundation Server updates more frequent than every 2 years but details still being worked out.  The team will definitely deliver one this fall. • Daylight Saving Time Visualized

  When you map out the Daylight Saving Time adjusted sunrise and sunset times over the course of the year, an interesting pattern emerges. Chart designer Germanium writes: I tried to come up with the reason for the daylight saving time change by just looking at the data for sunset and sunrise times. The figure represents sunset and sunrise times thought the year. It shows that the daylight saving time change marked by the lines (DLS) is keeping the sunrise time pretty much constant throughout the whole year, while making the sunset time change a lot. The spread of sunrise times as measured by the standard deviation is 42 minutes, which means that the sunrise time changes within that range the whole year, while the standard deviation for the sunset times is 1:30 hours. Whatever the argument for doing this is, it’s pretty clear that reason is to keep the sunrise time constant. You can read more about the controversial history of Daylight Saving Time here. • New WebLogic Server 12.1.2 Installation and Patching Technology By Monica Riccelli

  WebLogic Server 12.1.2 has many new features, but the first new feature you are likely to notice is the change in installer technology. WebLogic Server and Coherence 12.1.2 are installed using Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) installer technology. We have also changed WebLogic Server patching technology from SmartUpdate to OPatch, the patching tool used to patch OUI installations. Note that installation and patching technology used for prior versions of WebLogic Server has not changed. The primary motivation for this change is to provide consistency across the Oracle stack. Prior to WebLogic Server 12.1.2, Fusion Middleware customers were required to use different technologies to install and patch, for example, Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF) with WebLogic Server. Now users can perform installation and patching across products more efficiently by using the same technologies, and by using new installation packages that simplify installation of Fusion Middleware products with WebLogic Server. The following WebLogic Server distributions are now available on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN)  under OTN license, and from Oracle Software Delivery Cloud (OSDC) for licensed customers: wls_121200.jar - This OUI installer package includes WebLogic Server and Coherence and is targeted at WebLogic Server users who do not require other Fusion Middleware components such as ADF. This generic installer can be used to install WebLogic Server and Coherence on any supported operating system, and is intended for development or production purposes. • Apache mod_rewrite for multiple domains to SSL

  Hi there, I'm running a web service that will allow people to create their own "instances" of my application, running under their own domain. These people will create an A record to forward a subdomain of their main domain to my server. The problem is that my server runs everything under SSL. So in my configuration for port 80, I have the following: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName mydomain.com ServerAlias www.mydomain.com RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on RewriteRule /(.*) https://mydomain.com/$1 [R=301] </VirtualHost> This has worked well to forward all requests from the http: to https: domain. But as I said, I now need to let any domain automatically forward to the secure version of itself. Is there a rewrite rule that will let me take the incoming domain and rewrite it to the https version of same? So that the following matches would occur: http://some.otherdomain.com -> https://some.otherdomain.com http://evenanotherdomain.com -> https://evenanotherdomain.com Thanks for your help!   LinqPad as we all know has been a wonderful tool for running ad-hoc queries. With Azure Table storage in picture LinqPad was no longer in picture and we shifted focus to Cloud Storage Studio only to realize the limited and strange querying capabilities of CSS. With some tweaking to Linqpad we can get the comfortable old shoe of ad-hoc queries with LinqPad in the Azure Table storage. Steps: 1. Start LinqPad 2. Right Click in the query window and select “Query Properties” 3. In The Additional References add reference to Microsoft.WindowsAzure.StorageClient, System.Data.Services.Client.dll and the assembly containing the implementation of the DataServiceContext class tied to the Azure table storage. 4. In the additional namespace imports import the same three namespaces mentioned above. 5. Then we need to provide following details. a. Table storage account name and shared key. b. DataServiceContext implementing class in your code. c.   Are you looking for a way to make browsing to sites you’re not sure of in Internet Explorer a bit more secure? Here we take a quick look at how to disable third-party extensions in IE. Open up Internet Explorer and click on Tools then select Internet Options… Under Internet Properties click on the Advanced tab and under Settings scroll down and uncheck Enable third-party browser extensions and click Ok. Now restart IE and the extensions will be disabled. You can then re-enable them when you know a site can be trusted and you want to be able to use its services. This will help avoid malware when you visit a site that wants to install an extension and you’re not sure about it. • [MINI HOW-TO] Update Your Zune Player Software

  Keeping your computer and software up to date is very important in keeping everything running smooth and secure. It’s also important to keep your geeky gadgets updated as well. Here we take a look at updating a Zune HD. Note: In this example we’re updating a Zune HD out of the box which hasn’t been updated yet. The first thing you’ll need to do if you haven’t already is download and install the latest Zune software (link below). Now plug your Zune into your computer with the included USB connection cable and give it a moment to be recognized. Next launch the Zune Desktop software and you should get the following screen. Just accept the EULA… Then the update kicks off. Make sure not to disconnect the Zune while the update takes place. The update will take a few minutes, and after it’s complete you should be good to go and can start using your Zune. To update your player in the future, go to General Settings then Player Update. Just like your computer’s hardware and software, you want to keep your other geeky gadgets updated as well. This will help the device run more smoothly, and sometimes add additional functionality. • DC Comics Identifies Krypton on the Star Map

  This week Action Comics Superman #14 hits the stands and DC comics reveals the actual location of Kyrpton, delivered by none other than beloved astrophysicist Neil Tyson. Phil Plait at Bad Astronomy reports on the resolution of fans’ long standing curiosity about the location of Krypton: Well, that’s about to change. DC comics is releasing a new book this week – Action Comics Superman #14 – that finally reveals the answer to this stellar question. And they picked a special guest to reveal it: my old friend Neil Tyson. Actually, Neil did more than just appear in the comic: he was approached by DC to find a good star to fit the story. Red supergiants don’t work; they explode as supernovae when they are too young to have an advanced civilization rise on any orbiting planets. Red giants aren’t a great fit either; they can be old, but none is at the right distance to match the storyline. It would have to be a red dwarf: there are lots of them, they can be very old, and some are close enough to fit the plot. I won’t keep you in suspense: the star is LHS 2520, a red dwarf in the southern constellation of Corvus (at the center of the picture here). It’s an M3.5 dwarf, meaning it has about a quarter of the Sun’s mass, a third its diameter, roughly half the Sun’s temperature, and a luminosity of a mere 1% of our Sun’s. • Announcing Release of Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.1!

  Oct 26, 2012We are very happy to announce the release of  Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.1, providing High Availability (HA) and  Disaster Recovery (DR) capabilities for Oracle Solaris 11.1.  This is yet another proof of Oracle's continued investment in Oracle Solaris technologies such as Oracle Solaris Cluster. For this new release we have improved the Solaris Cluster integration within the Oracle environment. For example  we've created new agents such as PeopleSoft JobScheduler or added the support of the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance replication in the Geo Edition module (to facilitate disaster recovery in multi-site configuration equipped with those types of storage.) We have also extended the Oracle Solaris Zone Cluster feature with support of Oracle Solaris 10 zone clusters and exclusive-IP to facilitate deployment of virtualized or cloud architecture.And there are many more new features to discover in this release. • BUILD 2013&ndash;Day 2 Summary

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tmurphy/archive/2013/06/28/build-2013ndashday-2-summary.aspx Day 1 rocked.  So how could they top that?  By having more goodies to give away!  During the keynote they announced that attendees would get one year of Office 365, 100 GB of SkyDrive and one year of Adobe Cloud Service.  Overall they key note was long with more information shot at you than you could possibly absorb.  They went about 20 minutes over time which made me think that they could have split it to a 3rd keynote and given us a better idea on some of these topics and perhaps addressed the one open question that was floating around Twitter.  That is, what is going to happen with XBox development.  It sounded like there was a quick side mention of that, but I missed it. The rest of the day was packed with great sessions full of Windows 8, Azure and Windows Phone goodness.  I had planned on attending Scott Hanselman’s talk, but they had so many people this they had to push to an overflow room.  Stay tuned from session summaries later. The day was topped off by an attendee party across from the San Francisco Giant’s ball park.  It was kind of quirky and and fun.  They set it up on one of the piers in the bay and had food served by food trucks.  You would be surprised how good the food was.  Add in some pool tables, fooseball, video games, a DJ, a comedian/musician and plenty of spirits and it was a great way to end day 2. del.icio.us Tags: BUILD 2013
