• Gearman too many processes issue

  I use Net_Gearman from PECL, Gearmand 1.1.11 and Gearman Manager. Every time I add background job, I can see new worker listed with no Function, nor Id in Ggearman-Monitor: If I add many messages in the bash loop, after some time it becomes very slow. for i in $(seq 0 9999); do php Client.php && echo $i; done Yesterday, the situation was even worse - I had many error messages in Gearmand log regarding Too many open files and once I added --file-descriptors=49152 as an option and swithched to 1.1.11 from 1.0.6, these errors gone. • Launchpad autobuild fails when trying to access Maven component

  I'm trying to build thrift as a package for the first time on Launchpad and it is failing. It appears that it is failing access repo2.maven.org for some reason. It may be that there is some access restriction but I'm not sure. I will note that the package successfully built locally. Link to build log. Search for the string "repo2.maven.org" and you will see that there is a java.net.UnknownHostException. The repo packages are here. PS. These packages are an update to the thrift package as packaged by the txAMQP team using v0.2.0 of thrift.

• Can't connect to MySQL server on '127.0.0.1' + Postfix

  I just installed Postfix and configured it to use MySQL. • How can I make check_nrpe wait for my remote script to finish executing?

  I have a python script that's being used as a plugin for NRPE. This script checks to see if a process if running on a virtual machine by doing an SSH one-liner with a "ps ax | grep process" attached. When executing the script manually, it works as expected and returns a single line of output for NRPE as well as a status based on whether or not the process is running. When I attempt to run the command setup to execute this script (from my Nagios server), I instantly get the output "NRPE: Unable to read output", however when I run the script manually it takes about a second before it returns output. Other commands run just fine, so it would seem like NRPE needs to wait a second or two for output rather than instantly failing, but I've been unable to find any way of accomplishing this; any tips? Thanks PS: The virtual machines are not accessible from anywhere other than the host machine, hence the need for the nrpe plugin to ssh from the host into the VM to check the process.

• How to swap the "fn" use of Function keys on al Apple Keyboard in Linux

  I have an apple slim keyboard (USB) and if I want to use one of the Function Key as-is, I also have to press "fn " key first. Otherwise, it will try to perform the other function of the key, such as increasing or decreasing the display intensity, change the volume/mute, etc.... As well, the fn key is actually in the position of the "insert" key for regular keyboards. How can I fix all of that ? I really like this keyboard, as it make my typing much easier, and much more silent too. But some of those mappings that are different sometime bug me. Thanks :-)

• pros and cons with server management gui tools to manage linux web servers

  i have stumbled upon these GUI tools that could help you manage your linux server through a web interface. ebox, webmin, ispconfig, zivios, ispcp, plesk, cpanel etc. i wonder what the pros and cons are with these solutions. a lot of people is saying that they are not as good as using pure command line (ssh) to manage your server. but i think thats yet another "linux are for advanced users" talk. i agree that a lot of things may only be done with the command line by editing directly in the configuration files. but i don't really want to do that every time and for everything. especially basic configurations these could manage. its like not having phpmyadmin for managing mysql. it would be a pain in the ass right? so if one wants to throw up a web server serving a php site oneself developed and wants all the usual stuff up and running (mysql, phpmyadmin, svn, webdav etc) is these tools the right way to go? and for more advanced features, one just use the terminal like old days. is this a smart way of managing a linux server? and which one would you choose? have you used any of these and could share your thoughts about them?

• How to boot Linux from a 16gb USB flash drive

  I'm trying to install Linux on a single partition of a USB flash drive that's larger than 4gb. The first place I went to is http://pendrivelinux.com. I can follow these instructions for installing Xubuntu 9.04 perfectly, which unfortunately break down when I try to scale it up beyond 4gb. There are several other tools to do this (unetbootin and usb-creator) which follow a very similar formula. I figured out that a big problem of mine was that all of these tools assume the USB drive is formatted in FAT32, which unfortunately cannot hold a single file larger than 4gb. This is unfortunate because I want to use just one partition, so that my persistance file, casper-rw, looks like one big partition to the OS once I've booted off of the USB drive. I then tried following a myriad of instructions involving formatting the drive as one large ext2 filesystem and using extlinux to create a single bootable ext2 file system. This doesn't work for me however, after about 20 attempts verifying and slightly tweaking the formula, I cannot seem to get a "good" bootable ext2 file system built. I'm not entirely sure what's going on, but it seems as though no matter how hard I try, I cannot get the ext2 file system to remain coherent after copying the Linux ISO contents over, copying the MBR, and executing extlinux to create the ext bootloader. Every time, after I follow these steps (in any order) and reboot, I get an unbootable USB drive. If I then mount the drive under Linux again, I see a mess of a file system (inodes have clearly been screwed up somewhere along the way). I suspected that the USB drive wasn't being fully flushed, so I tried using the "sync" and "unmount" commands before rebooting which didn't affect things at all. I guess I have several possible questions - but let's start with the obvious - is there something I'm missing to create a bootable ext2 USB flash drive that's large (e.g. 16gb)?

• How to update-grub on a system running overlayroot?

  We ship boxes configured with overlayroot, using the following overlayroot.conf: overlayroot=device:dev=/dev/sda6,timeout=20,recurse=0 Which produces the following mount configuration: $ mount overlayroot on / type overlayfs (rw,errors=remount-ro) /dev/sda5 on /media/root-ro type ext3 (ro,relatime,errors=continue,user_xattr,acl,barrier=1,data=ordered) /dev/sda6 on /media/root-rw type ext3 (rw,relatime,errors=continue,user_xattr,acl,barrier=1,data=ordered) /dev/sda1 on /boot type ext3 (rw) As you can see, three key physical partitions: sda1 is /boot, sda5 is a read-only "factory" root, and sda6 is a "user" root which can be wiped at any point to restore the machine to its original factory state. Now, the problem arises when update-grub is run for any reason: $ sudo update-grub [sudo] password for administrator: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?). Understandable, since / is an overlayfs. The contents of /usr/sbin/update-grub are: #!/bin/sh set -e exec grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg "$@" With /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig being the business part of things. But the actual problem is in /usr/sbin/grub-probe, called by grub-mkconfig, and grub-probe is a binary. So my question is, is there a parameter or whatever which can make grub-probe do the right thing in the face of / being an overlayfs? And secondly, is there a way to hack/patch that in so that the update-grub script just does the right thing? Thanks.

• Citrix client slow to launch

  Was wondering if anyone else experience Citrix client to launch very slowly. While I'm a Windows SA by trade, I consider myself Novice+ on Linux, but I doubt thats the problem. This is the simple scenario: 1. Login to Citrix server to work from home 2. Click on the published application; this typically starts the local Citrix client. 3. Citrix client should start and you're off. Problem is between #2 and #3 I click on the application and 8 out of 9 times there is a 60 second delay and then I get an SSL connection error. I suspect this error is misleading since the connection took too long to open. But I dont know how to prove it (or fix it). I'm able to successfully manually launch wfcmgr without errors; so this leads me to believe Citrix client is installed correctly. I even leave it running thinking this may help, but I don't see a difference with or without this running first. The only times I'm able to connect successfully is when the Citrix client starts up a few seconds after clicking on the application. I've searched online for articles that might help, but tried a number of fixes without much difference. Even tried "ln -sf /dev/urandom /dev/random" as suggested by this article, but no dice:http://forums.citrix.com/message.jspa?messageID=1381276 My System (specs that may be relevant) Sony VAIO Laptop VGN-NW270F Linux Mint 11.04 Problem using: FireFox and Chrome Any help would be appreciated. • AWS Large Instance: /mnt does not show all the space that should be available

  I just created a Large (m1.large) 64 bit instance which comes with 850 GB instance storage. Look at the Large Instance http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/instance-types/ A 'df -h' from the root folder gives me the output below. The /mnt is where I'm thinking the instance storage is but here it is only showing me 414G.   I recently had a server downtime. I looked everywhere and the only thing I found in my log files is: Feb 17 18:58:04 localhost kernel: possible SYN flooding on port 80. Sending cookies. Feb 17 18:59:33 localhost kernel: possible SYN flooding on port 80. Sending cookies. Can someone give me more information about it. WHat is it, How can I debug the cause and how can I fix the same. I also posted ipconntrack suddenly became toooo large which has another data point I found unusual, wondering if the two things is connected as they occured exactly at the same time but at different servers. One at reverse proxy and other at actual backend Varnish server) Thanks

• Deluge through a socks proxy server

  To use deluge I use a socks proxy server. Everything was working perfectly till now. I use the following code to create the socks server: ssh -D 1080 user@remote-server In the proxy settings of Deluge I put the host as 127.0.0.1 and port as 1080 and use socks v4 (for some reason it didn't work with socks v5). This setup was working perfectly till now. Now suddenly I cannot download any torrents. The error I get is connection timed out. I checked the remote server and it seems it is not even being used. What can the error be ?
