    It’s been a while since I had to use an ODBC driver.  Today I learned… That when you install a 32 bit ODBC driver on a 64 bit Windows but it doesn’t show up in the Data Sources admin tool because this tool displays only 64 bit drivers. That you can manage a 32 bit ODBC driver on a 64 bit Windows using the 32 bit Data Sources admin tool located here: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe That 64 bit software can’t use 32 bit ODBC drivers.   • Why do I have to choose between "management" and "technical" tracks in my career?

    I was recently laid off, and although I found a new gig I'm a bit frustrated with how career tracks work in the land of software development. I really love doing a bit of everything: coding, testing, architect(ing), leadership/management, customer contact, requirements gathering, staff development, etc. Software companies, however, want me to fit into a niche: I'm either a coder, a tester, or a manager. When I try to explain to them that I'm best when I'm doing all of those at once, they seem very confused. I'm sympathetic to their interests, but at the same time frustrated that the industry works this way. Any advice? Do I just need to get with the program, so to speak?

Here are the main subquestions: Sandbox phase: Where can he announce his idea and proposal and receive positive/negative critic and feedback? Development phase: Where can he build his team to work on this project? Yet deployed phase: Where can he schedule tasks, assign tickets and bugs to be solved? and the list can go on... What really interests me is the "sandbox phase question".

  • Web services, Java EE, Spring, DB integration project ideas - maybe data mining related?

    I am a graduate Computer Science student (Data Mining and Machine Learning) and have good exposure to core Java (3 years). I have read up on a bunch of stuff on the following topics: Design patterns, Java EE Web services (SOAP and REST), Spring, and Hibernate Java Concurrency - advanced features like Task and Executors. I would now like to do a project combining this stuff -- over my free time of course -- to get a better understanding of these things and to kind of make an end to end software (to learn the best design principles etc + SVN, maven). Any good project ideas would be really appreciated. I just want to build this stuff to learn, so I don't really mind re-inventing the wheel. Also, anything related to data mining would be an added bonus as it fits with my research but is absolutely not necessary since this project is more to learn to do large scale software development.

    Here's my result, of sudo apt-get install -f. i have Ran it twice and got negative result. I believe there is an error at "error in Version string '0:3.6.1-dates for language English Translation data updates for all supported packages for: English" This same statement "error in Version string, caused me three days of attempting to download version 12.04. There is a bug report concerning the quoted text as well. Is there anyway to download the version without the language packs, why would I corrupt version 11.10? Also, when attempting to download Synaptic using sudo apt-get install synaptic, I get the same error message. Again I point out the initial download problems and the same error message receipt. Thanks. FYI: Dell Latitude D630, Intel Centrino processor. Also, the updater is currently running what seems to be the update. I will report back when it is done going through its process to let you know if it is in fact the 13.10 update. Update 2: System went through an update, but it wasn't for the OS. I think it was an update for the error message mentioned above. Now the OS update is currently running the 'distribution upgrade' portion of the update. This is further than it had gone before. Again I will report back once this is done to let you know whether or not the update was successful. Final Update: Don't know for sure what happened, but I'm almost sure that the error mentioned above was resolved in the first update prior to the 13.10 update. All set.

  • Prevent Apache restarting automatically after upgrading packages

    Following on from an earlier question: Is there a way to download security updates and notify admin without installing the update? A large number of packages interact with Apache (especially PHP) such that security updates to those packages can cause the server to attempt to restart the service. While my earlier question was answered, I'm now thinking that I need a different solution. So - is there are way to allow security updates to be applied using apt, have an email sent to an administrator, and, most importantly, prevent services from being restarted at the end of the installation/update process? The administrator will then be able to log in and restart the service manually.

  • How are realistic 3D faces created and animated in video games?

    I'm interested in being able to create realistic faces and facial expressions for the 3D characters of a game I'm working on. Think something similar to the dialog scenes in games like Mass Effect. Unfortunately I'm not sure where to begin. I'm sure the faces/animations are created through 3D Modeling software, but otherwise I am lost. Do facial animations use the same "bones" that normal body animation uses? Is there any preferred 3D software for realistic faces and animations? Is there a preferred format to export these faces and animations in?

  • How important is my job title?

    Hi all, I work on two internal, mission critical applications. Let's keep it simple and call them "Foo" and "Bar". Nobody outside of the company has ever heard of them - like I said, they're internal apps. Until now my jobtitle has just been "Software Developer". I've recently discovered that my jobtitle is being changed to "Foo and Bar Developer". I'm a little worried that, should I leave the company, I'll have trouble finding a new job because of my weird job title. My question is this: How important is my job title compared to everything else on my CV (or resume, if you're American)? Am I likely to be rejected by box-ticking HR people who don't realise that "Foo and Bar Developer" is the same as "Software Developer"? Thanks in advance.
