  • What is the method of choice to adjust CSS changes in vaadin?

    - by Karussell
I am struggling with some minor layout changes in vaadin which has to be done on Java AND Css side. Everytime I need to adjust a layout thing like padding-top, background color or bold text of one component I need to set the style via Java code too: userLink.setStyleName("textbold"); The changes in my styles.css (under VAADIN/themes/app/) would then be: @import "../runo/styles.css"; .textbold { font-weight: bold; } ... Is this the correct way of changing the CSS or is there another way? Can I do this without affecting the Java code?

  • XML over HTTP with JMS and Spring

    - by Will Sumekar
I have a legacy HTTP server where I need to send an XML file over HTTP request (POST) using Java (not browser) and the server will respond with another XML in its HTTP response. It is similar to Web Service but there's no WSDL and I have to follow the existing XML structure to construct my XML to be sent. I have done a research and found an example that matches my requirement here. The example uses HttpClient from Apache Commons. (There are also other examples I found but they use java.net networking package (like URLConnection) which is tedious so I don't want to use them). But it's also my requirement to use Spring and JMS. I know from Spring's reference that it's possible to combine HttpClient, JMS and Spring. My question is, how? Note that it's NOT in my requirement to use HttpClient. If you have a better suggestion, I'm welcome. Appreciate it. For your reference, here's the XML-over-HTTP example I've been talking about: /* * $Header: * $Revision$ * $Date$ * ==================================================================== * * Copyright 2002-2004 The Apache Software Foundation * * Licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0 (the "License"); * you may not use this file except in compliance with the License. * You may obtain a copy of the License at * * http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0 * * Unless required by applicable law or agreed to in writing, software * distributed under the License is distributed on an "AS IS" BASIS, * WITHOUT WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF ANY KIND, either express or implied. * See the License for the specific language governing permissions and * limitations under the License. * ==================================================================== * * This software consists of voluntary contributions made by many * individuals on behalf of the Apache Software Foundation. • Websphere CE issue in Eclipse EE

    - by Moev4
I have downloaded the Websphere 2.1 App Server and verified that it works fine. I now wanted to use eclipse EE to manage it by adding the server to the server tab. Everything seems to work fine when going through the setup but when I go to start the server I get the error message: ERROR [GBeanInstanceState] Error while starting; GBean is now in the FAILED state: abstractName="org.apache.geronimo.framework/j2ee-system/2.1.4/car?ServiceModule=org.apache.geronimo.framework/j2ee-system/2.1.4/car,j2eeType=AttributeStore,name=AttributeManager" java.io.IOException: Unable to write manageable attribute files to directory /opt/IBM/WebSphere/AppServerCommunityEdition/var/config at org.apache.geronimo.system.configuration.LocalAttributeManager.ensureParentDirectory(LocalAttributeManager.java:573) at org.apache.geronimo.system.configuration.LocalAttributeManager.load(LocalAttributeManager.java:327) .... I was wondering if anyone had experience with this particular issue?

  • Types in Bytecode

    - by HH
Hey everyone, I've been working for some time on (Java) Bytecode, however, it had never occurred to me to ask why are some instructions typed? I understand that in an ADD operation, we need to distinguish between an integer addition and a FP addition (that's why we have IADD and FADD). However, why do we need to distinguish between ISTORE and FSTORE? They both involve the exact same operation, which is moving 32 bits from the stack to a local variable position? The only answer I can think of is for type-safety, to prevent this: (ILOAD, ILOAD, FADD). However, I believe that type-safety is already enforced at the Java language level. OK, the Class file format is not directly coupled with Java, so is this a way to enforce type-safety for languages that do not support it? Any thought? Thank you.

  • search paths where one native library depends on another

    - by carneades
I'm using JNA and Java but I think this question affects any native-to-nonnative bridge. I have a Java application which relies on lib1.dylib, and lib1.dylib relies on lib2.dylib. I want to put everything inside of my .app file on Mac. I can easily put lib1.dylib inside and set java.classpath (or NativeLibrary.addSearchPath()) to tell the JVM where to find lib1.dylib. The trouble is, I don't know how to communicate that lib1.dylib's dependencies are also in the location I provided. The result is that lib1 is loaded fine, but then lib2 can't be found since it's not in the operating system's library path. Anyone know how I can overcome this problem? I imagine it must come up plenty in big projects with large numbers of shared libraries.

  • NullPointerException when trying to run an applet of multiple classes

    - by Chad
I'm trying to display an applet in an html page. I've had success doing this in the past, but now that I have more than one class in the applet, I seem to get an error every time I try to load the applet in an html page. For a bit, I was writing the html page by hand, but then I realized the applet viewer in netbeans (the IDE I'm coding in) created an html page for you, which is the same as the one I was coding. The application runs error-free when in the applet viewer, but the following message is displayed when I try to run it in the html page: java.lang.NullPointerException at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager.findAppletJDKLevel(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager.createApplet(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager$AppletExecutionRunnable.run(Unknown Source) at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source) Exception: java.lang.NullPointerException I tested another small, one class applet and it ran fine in the html page under the same conditions. Any ideas what may be wrong?

  • calling invokeAndWait from the EDT

    - by Aly
    Hi, I have a problem following from my previous problem. I also have the code SwingUtillities.invokeAndWait somewhere else in the code base, but when I remove this the gui does not refresh. If I dont remove it the error I get is: Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.Error: Cannot call invokeAndWait from the event dispatcher thread at java.awt.EventQueue.invokeAndWait(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait(Unknown Source) at game.player.humanplayer.model.HumanPlayer.act(HumanPlayer.java:69) The code in HumanPlayer.act is: public Action act(final Action[] availiableActions) { try { SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait(new Runnable() { @Override public void run() { gui.update(availiableActions); } }); } catch (InterruptedException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } catch (InvocationTargetException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } synchronized(performedAction){ while(!hasPerformedAction()){ try { performedAction.wait(); } catch (InterruptedException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } setPerformedAction(false); } return getActionPerfomed(); }

  • Which language to learn C# or Salesforce.com/apex for C++ programmer

    - by polapts
Being a C++ programmer with 7-8 years of experience, I wanted to know the market trends. When I searched a little bit I found more jobs with keyword C# than C++ or Java. I am just wondering if it is a good idea to learn C# or Java from a career perspective. Also, I read somewhere about Salesforce/apex. It was mentioned that this is something in vogue. So my question is which technology I should go for C#/Java/Salesforce(Apex) from career perspective? Thanks

  • Running The JVM From Within An MXML Component

    - by Joshua
Thinking outside of the box here... What possible basic approaches could be taken in an effort to create a Flex component that could run Java? I know I can easily use flex to browse to or launch a Java app, but there are things I can only do if I can run the Java from WITHIN an MXML Component. I the strictest sense, I know it's not impossible (ie: if you had all the source code for flex and for the jvm), but what's the least impractical means to this end? Showcase your creativity.

  • JavaFX - reduce() function to show how to pass functions as parameters

    - by Helper Method
At the moment I'm writing a JavaFX guide for Java developers. In order to show how to pass a function to another funtion i adopted the reduce() function found in Effective Java: function reduce(seq: Integer[], f: function(: Integer, : Integer): Integer, init: Integer) { var result = init; for (i in seq) { result = f(i, result); } result } def nums = [1 .. 10]; println(reduce(nums, function(a: Integer, b: Integer) { a + b }, 0)); // prints 55 println(reduce(nums, function(a: Integer, b: Integer) { a * b }, 0)); // prints 3628800 Now I wonder if this example is not to hard for someone starting to learn JavaFX. The tutorial is targeted to programmers with a solid understanding of Java, yet I'm not quite sure about the usefulness of the example. Any ideas?

  • Performing complicated XPath queries in Scala

    - by Ken Bloom
What's the simplest API to use in scala to perform the following XPath queries on a document? //s:Annotation[@type='attitude']/s:Content/s:Parameter[@role='type' and not(text())] //s:Annotation[s:Content/s:Parameter[@role='id' and not(text())]]/@type The only documentation I can find on Scala's XML libraries has no information on performing complicated real XPath queries. I used to like JDOM for this purpose (in Java), but since JDOM doesn't support generics, it will be painful to work with in Scala. (Other XML libraries for Java have tended to be even more painful in Java, but I admit I don't know the landscape real well.)

  • What are the advantages of learning Go?

    - by Pangea
What is so unique about Go? Over the 11 years of my career I've learnt Pascal, C, C++, COBOL and then Java. I always felt that going from C to C++ to Java was a incremental and value added progression. Now I see a proliferation of functional programming languages and I understand the benefit of learning few of them (like actors in scala etc). Now I was going through the Go programming language and was wondering why would I want to learn this? Is this going to simplify how I have been writing the code? What are its use cases? How can I make a case to promote it in my team? What is the next programming language that a Java team that builds business applications like us can benefit from? Appreciate your comments on this.

  • Running non-existing jar does not cause any expection/error

    - by Nikolay Kuznetsov
Please, consider the following snippet which is being run from Eclipse. Even though the external jar file does not exist no Exception is thrown and process is not null. Why is it so? try { Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("java -jar NonExisting.jar"); if (process == null) System.out.println("process = null"); else System.out.println(process); } catch (IOException e) { System.err.println(e); } It prints java.lang.ProcessImpl@1a4d139 If I run it manully from command line then there is an error: C:\Users\workspace\Project\src>java -jar NonExisting.jar Error: Unable to access jarfile NonExisting.jar

  • StringBuilder/StringBuffer vs. "+" Operator

    - by matt.seil
I'm reading "Better, Faster, Lighter Java" (by Bruce Tate and Justin Gehtland) and am familiar with the readability requirements in agile type teams, such as what Robert Martin discusses in his clean coding books. On the team I'm on now, I've been told explicitly not to use the "+" operator because it creates extra (and unnecessary) string objects during runtime. But this article: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-jtp01274.html Written back in '04 talks about how object allocation is about 10 machine instructions. (essentially free) It also talks about how the GC also helps to reduce costs in this environment. What is the actual performance tradeoffs between using "+," "StringBuilder," or "StringBuffer?" (In my case it is StringBuffer only as we are limited to Java 1.4.2.) StringBuffer to me results in ugly, less readable code, as a couple of examples in Tate's book demonstrates. And StringBuffer is thread-synchronized which seems to have its own costs that outweigh the "danger" in using the "+" operator. Thoughts/Opinions?

  • Wanting a type of grid for a pixel editor

    - by wiggles
Hi, I am currently trying to develop a basic pixel editor application to build up my programming experience with Java. I am designing it so the user has several colour options on, they click on an option and then they can drag over the cells in the grid and they change colour (like a typical image editor, but with a sort of snap on to each grid cell) Any idea of what Java component, if any, is able to implement this type of grid in Java? I had thought of each cell being a JButton, but this seemed terribly inefficient and I don't think it would be possible to change the colour of each cell(button) with out individually clicking on each one. Any help appreciated.

  • Passing arguments stored in a file when running projects in Netbeans

    - by oderebek
My problem is that I can't remember how I can pass the arguments when running a project in netbeans. There is not enough documentation on web if anybody could help it would be highly appreciated. Here is what I know, you can change the run configurations under run Set Project Configuration Default Configuration there there is a entry space where zou can enter the arguments to be passed. I have a file called "AsciiShop.java" which to be runned and I need to pass the arguments stored in a file called "asciishop-A04-PP.i1". When I am using terminal or cmd.exe I can run the program with java AsciiShop < asciishop-A04-PP.i1 and it works perfect. I want to be able to the same on netbeans. I have placed the file in the default working directory which contains src and bin folders. What should I write in the arguments entry field on the project configurations window, so that it works same like java AsciiShop < asciishop-A04-PP.i1

  • How to specify a JRE range in jnlp file?

    - by vicky21
We have a java app which uses Java Web Start. The jnlp file is configured with [j2se version="1.5+"]. So if JRE 1.5 and 1.6 are installed, the app is run on 1.6. Now, we have requirement where the app should be restricted to run only within the range - JRE 1.5.0_07 through JRE 1.5.0_17 [j2se version="1.5*"] will not work - it will always launch the app with the latest jre from 1.5 family. I can request an exact product version by including the href attribute. [j2se version="1.5.0_14" href="http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se"/] But how do I specify a specific range of JREs in the jnlp file so that JWS picks up a JRE from that range only? So if 1.5.0_07, 1.5.0_17 and JRE 6 are installed, it should run the app on 1.5.0_17. Is there a good way to accomplish this?

  • CMS for SmartPhones

    - by dde
The company I work for has a document management and retrieval system. We are noticing employees use more their smartphones than their laptops, but they cannot access the document management system. So, we are thinking about a CMS, with persistent storage, perhaps developed in Java. I just started looking into Jease and dotCMS, and also checked here those recommendations in questions like "Best Open Source Java CMS", etc I find some CMSs too bulky for simple stuff like what we need which is basically document download/edit/upload, and some simple collaboration and personalization stuff. Smartphones of choice in our workforce are Nokia, Blackberry and IPhone, The question is: are there java based with persistent db CMSs aimed at Smartphones right now? I need replication of the complete database and run website offline.

  • JDBC CLASSPATH Not Working

    - by AeroDroid
I'm setting up a simple JDBC connection to my working MySQL database on my server. I'm using the Connector-J provided by MySQL. According to their documentation, I'm suppose to create the CLASSPATH variable to point to the directory where the mysql-connector-java-5.0.8-bin.jar is located. I used export set CLASSPATH=/path/mysql-connector-java-5.0.8-bin.jar:$CLASSPATH. When I type echo $CLASSPATH to see if it exists, everything seems fine. But then when I open a new terminal and type echo $CLASSPATH it's no longer there. I think this is the main reason why my Java server won't connect to the JDBC, because it isn't saving the CLASSPATH variable I set. Anyone got suggestions or fixes on how to set up JDBC in the first place?

  • Is Python a beginner language or is it robust?

    - by orokusaki
I am already working on some software in Python but I'm having one of those days where I step back and reflect just to make sure I'm not spinning my wheels. I know that Twitter launched with RoR because it was fast to build. Then they almost moved into another language in 2008 because of scalability issues. This has caused me to step back and introspect for a moment to make sure I'm heading down the right path. I've read in some tutorials and other places that Python is "a great first language" or a "nice beginner language" as though it's not capable of larger tasks. I look at it as Python can do what Java or ASP can but with about 1/4th of the code, not to mention I don't have to build or compile, etc. I've read that Java runs quite a few times faster than Python which is important of course, but then I read everywhere that hardware keeps getting cheaper and there are projects like Unladen Swallow by Google to make Python faster. Should I be concerned or is this just the remnants of Java developers?

  • Forcing GWT to assume List is implemented as ArrayList

    - by joecks
For some reason I'm stucked with model classes using List as Collection Type and I would like to use the model on the client side. However GWT of course fails serializing java.util.List. However all implementations of List in this model are based on ArrayList. So is it possible to tell GWT to assume List is ArrayList? Edit GWT fails on compile time, since a possible candidate for List is also java.util.Collections.SingeltonList - which can not be compiled. I'm using GWT 2.1 and Java 1.6 .

  • How can I get Syslogging to work on the JVM?

    - by Synesso
I want to do syslogging from Java. There is a log4j appender, but it doesn't seem to work (for me anyway ... though Google results show many others with this issue still unresolved). I'm trying to debug the appender, so I've written the following script based upon RFC3164 It runs, but no logging appears in the syslog. // scala import java.io._ import java.net._ val ds = new DatagramSocket() val fullMsg = "<11>May 26 14:47:22 Hello World" val packet = new DatagramPacket(fullMsg.getBytes("UTF-8"), fullMsg.length, InetAddress.getLocalHost, 514) ds send packet ds.close I also tried using /bin/nc, but it doesn't work either. echo "<14>May 26 15:23:83 Hello world" > nc -u localhost 514 The Ubuntu command /usr/bin/logger does work, however. logger -p user.info hello world # logs: May 26 15:25:10 dsupport2 jem: hello world What could I be doing wrong?

If I use same API from normal java program (within that plugin itself), it can able to create excel file without errors. But, when I try to create from testcase, I am getting the following error: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/poi/hssf/usermodel/HSSFWorkbook I have added required jar file into lib folder and added to build-path. Why its working from normal java program, but not working from WindowTester generated testcase. Could anyone help me.
