• Social Retailing

  For retailers the move to mobile has been obvious.  More and more consumers are interacting with retailers, both online and in the store, using their mobile devices.  Retailers are quick to invest in both consumer facing mobile apps as well as ones to equip employees.  But when I talk to retailers about social, the value isn't as clear-cut.  Intuitively, retailers know that better relationships with customers will result in higher sales, but the trip to get there has many paths. The interesting thing about social media is that it has the potential to permeate all parts of the business.  Obviously it works well for marketing, but it also has a place with recruiting, knowledge management, trend analysis, and employee collaboration.  Information gathered from social media can enhance existing processes like assortment planning, product development, space planning, promotion planning, and replenishment.  Letting the customer influence each of these areas helps align the experience. One of the things holding retailers back is the lack of consistent and integrated tools to manage social media and make sense of the huge amounts of data.  To that end Oracle has been aggressively acquiring in the space, as depicted in the infographic below.  Soon, social will get the same level of investment as mobile. • A quick hello to the Western Kentucky .NET User Group

  A few days back, I got a chance to speak at the Western Kentucky .NET User Group meeting in Murray, Kentucky.  The opportunity came up because the original speaker, Jeff Blankenburg, had another obligation and was thus unable to come to this meeting.  I volunteered to deliver his presentation, which is an overview of MIX10 conference. It was a great experience for me; got to drive around and do a little bit of sight-seeing – can’t say I’ve ever been to Kentucky before, so first trip ever there.  I got to meet the user group’s current lead, Tom Turner and got to chat and discuss about all kinds of stuff with the other members.  Cheers to Matt Gawarecki and Brandon Sharp! The presentation itself mostly covers new features in Visual Studio 2010, which was recently released on April 12 – got to demonstrate Historical Debugging in IntelliTrace, Parallel Stacks, View Call Hierarchy and show some Extensions.  We also covered some of the new functionalities in Silverlight 4 (using webcams, drag & drop support among others) and I got to show off Scott Guthrie’s Windows Phone 7 Twitter app.  Altogether, it was quite a bit to cover in 70 minutes or so, but I think everyone enjoyed it. Jeff provided me with the presentation slides (which I modify a bit) and demo applications; so I’m putting it up here for those that may be interested in downloading them.  Please keep in mind that all the demos were made with VS2010 RC, so there may be slight tweaks to get it to work on the RTM version.

• Wireless drops on HP ENVY dv6 with RT3290 wireless, worked without problem prior to upgrading to Ubuntu 13.10, can it be fixed?

  I have a HP ENVY dv6 Notebook PC with an AMD A10 quad core and RT3290 wireless. Since I upgraded from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10, the wireless connects, but then drops after a few minutes or longer, whether or not I am running openconnect to get through a VPN. If I attempt to run a remote X client (e.g. remote xterm) it drops. If I don't run an X client, it disconnects after a while, requiring a reload of the driver and reconnect. • More than one way to skin an Audit

  I get asked quite a bit about auditing in SQL Server. By "audit", people mean everything from tracking logins to finding out exactly who ran a particular SELECT statement. In the really early versions of SQL Server, we didn't have a great story for very granular audits, so lots of workarounds were suggested. As time progressed, more and more audit capabilities were added to the product, and in typical database platform fashion, as we added a feature we didn't often take the others away. So now, instead of not having an option to audit actions by users, you might face the opposite problem - too many ways to audit! • Remote Debugging

  Obviously, the easiest way to solve a bug is to be able to reproduce it in house. However, sometimes that is not practical. For starters, users are often not very good at providing you with useful information. Costumer Service: "what seems to be the issue?" User: "It crashed!" To further compound that, sometimes the bug only occurs under certain environmentally conditions that can not be adequately replicated in house. With that in mind, it is important to build some sort of diagnostic framework into your product. What type of solutions have you seen or used in your experience? Logging seems to be the predominate method, which makes sense. We have a fairly sophisticated logging frame work in place with different levels of verbosity and the ability to filter on specific modules (actually we can filter down to the granularity of a single file). Error logs are placed strategically to manufacture a pretty good representation of a stack trace when an error occurs. We don't have the luxury of 10 million terabytes of disk space since I work on embedded platforms, so we have two ways of getting them off the system: a serial port and a syslog server. However, an issue we run into sometimes is actually getting the user to turn the logs on. Our current framework often requires some user interaction.

• 12.0.4.3 - Missing Battery Icon, auto Suspend not working, Keyboard shortcuts volume up/down no longer working

  Problems I am experiencing: Battery Icon not showing up unity bar (top right corner). Volume Up/Down/Mute not working. Bluetooth hot keys described above also not working.Brightness up/down keys on this keyboard no longer working (apple wireless keyboard) Laptop no longer suspends when lid is shut. I have to go to 'power' button on top right corner and click on 'Suspend' All was working flawlessly until I did the following: I have recently upgraded to Nvidia propriety driver version 319 {version recommended}. Installed Xscreensaver and then removed it and went back to default screensaver. Done a system update (1st since installing) and now currently running: Linux 3.8.0-32-generic #47~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 2 16:19:35 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux NOTE: Base system was ubuntu 12.04.3 installed from ISO however lsb_release reports "No LSB modules are available" 4.installed psensor. I have check power setting (via Settings) and power setting via dconf-editor and set to recommended settings as described in posts detailing solution to this problem. - I have disabled 1) Nvdia settings at startup and 2) psensor at startup but this does not help. I am using an HP DV7 with 2GB Nvidia card. Not using any fancy graphics features. Recommendations? Thanks.

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I currently have a website and blog and using a limited web hosting plan. When I upload images on my hosting server it consumes a lot of bandwidth and space. So I was thinking of hosting images on some-other image hosting site and direct linking it to my site. I found out few sites like imageshack, photobucket, tinypic, imgur. However, I see all have certain restrictions. The features i am looking for are as follows: 1. At least 10gb space 2. At least 500gb bandwidth (bec I hav very high traffic) 3. Very high speed even during heavy load like 1000 visitors accessing every hour. 4. Ultra reliable servers (99.9% uptime) 5. Privacy control 6. Must not ever delete image if inactive 7. Create and manage albums 8. Company that will last long in business atleast for next 10 years. 9. Free of cost 10. Hotlinking/ Directlinking image.

  The Nordics OTN ACE Tour 2013 with stops in Stockholm, Ballerup/Copenhagen and Oslo is over. A very intense week with plenty of excellent presentations from Lonneke Dikmans, Sten Vesterli, Tim Hall and others. I'm always impressed how much those people know and how good they present. • System testing - making sure the system conforms to specification. Validation?

  After weeks of research I have nearly completed my thesis, yet I am unable to clear up my confusion contained in all previous threads here (and in many books): During system testing, we check the system function against system analysis (functional system design) - but that would fit to a definition of verification according to many books. But I follow ISO12207, which considers all testing as validation (making sure work product meets requirement for intended use). How can I justify that unit testing or system testing is validation, even though when I check it against specification? Which fullfils the definiton of verification? When testing that e.g. "Save button" works, is it validation? This picture shows my understanding of V&V, so different from many other sources, including ISTQB etc. Essential problem I have is that a book using the same picture also states on another place that: test activities in the area of validation are usability, alpha and beta testing. For verification, testable system requirements are defined whose correct implementation can be tested through system tests. Isn't that the opposite of what the picture says? Most books present the following picture, where validation is just making sure that customer needs are satisfied. Mind you that according to ISO, validation activity is testing.

• Building a Redundant / Distributed Application

  This is more of a "point me in the right direction" question. My team of three and I have built a hosted web app that queues and routes customer chat requests to available customer service agents (It does other things as well, but this is enough background to illustrate the issue). The basic dev architecture today is: a single page ajax web UI (ASP.NET MVC) with floating chat windows (think Gmail) a backend Windows service to queue and route the chat requests this service also logs the chats, calculates service levels, etc a Comet server product that routes data between the web frontend and the backend Windows service this also helps us detect which Agents are still connected (online) And our hardware architecture today is: 2 servers to host the web UI portion of the application a load balancer to route requests to the 2 different web app servers a third server to host the SQL Server DB and the backend Windows service responsible for queuing / delivering chats So as it stands today, one of the web app servers could go down and we would be ok. However, if something would happen to the SQL Server / Windows Service server we would be boned. My question - how can I make this backend Windows service logic be able to be spread across multiple machines (distributed)? The Windows service is written to accept requests from the Comet server, check for available Agents, and route the chat to those agents. How can I make this more distributed? How can I make it so that I can distribute the work of the backend Windows service can be spread across multiple machines for redundancy and uptime purposes? Will I need to re-write it with distributed computing in mind? I should also note that I am hosting all of this on Rackspace Cloud instances - so maybe it is something I should be less concerned about? Thanks in advance for any help!

• Upcoming events : OBUG Connect Conference 2012

  The Oracle Benelux User Group (OBUG) have given me an amazing opportunity to present a one day Optimizer workshop at their annual Connect Conference in Maastricht on April 24th. The workshop will run as one of the parallel tracks at the conference and consists of three 45 minute sessions. Each session can be attended stand alone but they will build on each other to allow someone new to the Oracle Optimizer or SQL tuning to come away from the conference with a better understanding of how the Optimizer works and what techniques they should deploy to tune their SQL. Below is a brief description of each of the sessions Session 7 - 11:30 am Oracle Optimizer: Understanding Optimizer StatisticsThe workshop opens with a discussion on Optimizer statistics and the features introduced in Oracle Database 11g to improve the quality and efficiency of statistics-gathering. • Approach for developing software that will need to be ported to multiple mobile platforms in the future

  I am currently doing the preliminary design for a new product my company will be pushing out soon. We will start on Android, but then we will need to quickly develop the IPhone, IPad.... and then the Windows 8 ports of the application. Basically the only code that wouldn't be reusable is the view specific code and the multimedia functions. This will be an SIP client (of course the user of the app will not know this) with several bells and whistles for our own business specific purposes. My initial thought is to develop all of the engine in C and provide a nice API for the C library since JAVA and .NET will allow native invoking, and I should just be able to directly link to the C lib in objective-C. Is there a better approach for vast code reuse which also remains close to the native platform? I.e. I don't want dependencies such as Mono-droid and the like or complicated interpreter/translator schemes. I don't mind re-coding the view(s) for each platform, but I do not want to have multiple versions of the main engine. Also, if I want to have some good abstraction mechanisms (like I would in say, C++) is this possible? I have read that C++ is not allowed for the IPad and Iphone devices. I would love to handle the media decoding in the C library, but I assume that this will be platform dependent so that probably will not be an option either. Any ideas here?

• Synaptics drivers are not loading on Kubuntu 13.10 on Dell Vostro 2420

  I freshly installed Kubuntu 13.10, 32 bit version on newly purchased Dell Vostro 2420. everything is working fine except scrolling and multitouch features through touchpad. I am able to change position of cursor using touchpad and able to tap (single click and double click) but scrolling is not working I tried to find out solution by searching on google but could not find proper solution to load synaptics drivers. i am listing some details: Laptop: Dell Vostro 2420 Linux Kernel version and distribution: 3.11.0-12-generic, Kubuntu 13.10 output of xinput list is ? • Are web application usability issues equal to website usability issues?

  I've been reading two books about web usability issues and tests (Rocket Surgery Made Easy¹ and Prioritizing Web Usability²) and they claim some strategies and typical problems about website usability and how to lead them. However, I want to do a web application, and I think I lost track of what I am trying to solve. These two books claim to work with raw websites (e-commerce, business sites, even intranet), but I'm not sure if everything about web usability is applicable to web application usability. They sure talk about always having available (and usable) the Back button, to focus on short information rather than big amounts of text, etc., but they could be inaccurate in deeper problems that may be easier (or just skippable) in regular websites. Has anybody some experience in this field and could tell me if both web applications and websites share their usability issues? Thanks in advance Edit: Quoting Wikipedia, a website is a collection of related web pages containing images, videos or other digital assets, and a web application is an application that is accessed over a network such as the Internet or an intranet. To sum up, both shows/lets you search/produce information but websites are "simple" in interaction and keep the classics of websites (one-click actions) and the other one is closer to desktop applications in the meaning of their uses and ways of interaction (double click, modal windows, asynchronous calls [to keep you in the same "environment" instead of reloading it] etc.). I don't know if this clarifies the difference. Edit 2: Quoting @Victor and myself, a website is anything running in your browser, but a web application is somewhat running in your browser that could be running in your desktop, with similar behaviors and features. Gmail is a web application that could replace Outlook. GDocs could replace Office. Grooveshark could replace your music player, etc.

• Use MvcContrib Grid to Display a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC

  The past six articles in this series have looked at how to display a grid of data in an ASP.NET MVC application and how to implement features like sorting, paging, and filtering. In each of these past six tutorials we were responsible for generating the rendered markup for the grid. Our Views included the <table> tags, the <th> elements for the header row, and a foreach loop that emitted a series of <td> elements for each row to display in the grid. While this approach certainly works, it does lead to a bit of repetition and inflates the size of our Views. The ASP.NET MVC framework includes an HtmlHelper class that adds support for rendering HTML elements in a View. An instance of this class is available through the Html object, and is often used in a View to create action links (Html.ActionLink), textboxes (Html.TextBoxFor), and other HTML content. Such content could certainly be created by writing the markup by hand in the View; however, the HtmlHelper makes things easier by offering methods that emit common markup patterns. You can even create your own custom HTML Helpers by adding extension methods to the HtmlHelper class. MvcContrib is a popular, open source project that adds various functionality to the ASP.NET MVC framework. This includes a very versatile Grid HTML Helper that provides a strongly-typed way to construct a grid in your Views. Using MvcContrib's Grid HTML Helper you can ditch the <table>, <tr>, and <td> markup, and instead use syntax like Html.Grid(...). This article looks at using the MvcContrib Grid to display a grid of data in an ASP.NET MVC application. • Texture2D.GetData fails to return pixel colour data

  Because I'm using sprite sheets instead of an individual texture per sprite, I need to pass in a Rectangle when calling Texture2D.GetData() in my collision detection for per-pixel tests. Unfortunately, without fail I get an ArgumentException percolated down from an internal method inside the Texture (not Texture2D) class. My code for getting the texture data looks like this: public override Color[] GetPixelData() { Color[] data = new Color[(int)size.Product()]; Rectangle rect = new Rectangle(hframe * (int)size.X, vframe * (int)size.Y, (int)size.X, (int)size.Y); #if DEBUG if (sprite.Bounds.Contains(rect) && sprite.Format == SurfaceFormat.Color) #endif sprite.GetData(0, rect, data, 0, 1); return data; } Even with the check to ensure I'm grabbing a valid rectangle and that the texture format matches what I'm trying to get, I still get that exception, claiming "The size of the data passed in is too large or too small for this resource." Unfortunately, the debugger won't let me check the locals within the Texture.ValidateTotalSize() method where the exception originates. Has anyone else had this problem and knows how to fix it? I'm relying on AABB testing only for now, but that doesn't really work for some of my game's entities due to odd shapes, rotation and scaling.

  Hi all, I have a query regarding holding the payment in PAYGATE PAYMENT GATEWAY. Here is the problem in brief. I am doing a website where the payment should be made only a certain members buy the product. For Example if there is an iPhone in my site, then that particular phone must be buy by certain quantities which given by admin. It may be done one by one user or a single user can buy all the quantities at a single time. In this case i need to hold the payment here.Because i don't want to receive the payments until the certain quantities bought. Because if certain quantities were not buy i need to refund the money to their account. We don't like to do this process. That's why we are looking for holding the payment. Is it possible or what is the best way to solve this problem? Please let me know what is you professional opinion? thanks in advance...
