• Multiple servers acting like a single one with all the hardware?

  Hello, by now I have 10 servers for hpc, power computing oriented. My users need to launch several processes using qmake. The users are used to work with ubuntu 9.10, and the software from the repositories is switable for them. I've deployed ubuntu 9.10 to all 10 servers (pxe rocks). By now we work with parallel-ssh and cluster-ssh, which allows as to launch the same process to all servers. With this tools this tools the servers remain as independent but with the same software and the same launched command. Now we would like to go to next step and see all the servers as a single one with all the resources from the other 9 as if was its resources. The difference would be substantial in time to process and also time to design the command to launch. Any advice on wich software to use will be very useful? Thanks

• MacBook says to replace battery. Should I?

  Hi! My MacBook says that battery is not charging, and the battery is completely empty (in fact, pressing the button on the battery illuminates no LEDs). If I plug the power adapter off the mac shuts off immediately. I tried with a spare adapter, and it won't charge it. System information says it has 380 cycles. The battery is 2.5 years old. System profiler says the battery has 0 mAh of capacity, and that it should be replaced. Should I just buy a new battery, or should I bring it to an apple point, and leave it there? They can take a look at it (it's on AppleCare), they told me that they will repair it is there is anything wrong with the charging circuit, but they won't give me a new battery. They will keep the laptop for 10 working days at least... I hate when this happens :P

• Free-flow Alternative to Powerpoint?

  So I've been digging around the net trying to find a good set of alternatives to Powerpoint. Part of my interest is that I found one, Prezi, that I liked for it's free-form style. Part of the power of it was that I can zoom out and select any part of the presentation to continue from and it feels much like a mind map or association of thoughts. Are there any other tools that offer anything similar in vein to this way of presenting material? I'm looking for something that just pops differently than a death-by-powerpoint-style presentation, so I would be happy to find tools that help present information in more fluid styles. It doesn't have to mirror Prezi, and I wouldn't want that, but after seeing what Prezi does, I have to think there are other ways of presenting information to a group of people than one square slide at a time.

  Does ASP.NET MVC offer any simple way to get model binding to work when you have model classes that inherit from others? In my scenario I have a View that is strongly typed to List<Person>. I have a couple of classes that inherit from Person, namely PersonTypeOne and PersonTypeTwo. I have three strongly typed partial views with names that match these class names (and render form elements for the properties of their respective models). This means that in my main View I can have the following code: <% for(int i = 0; i < Model.Count; i++) { Html.RenderPartial(Model[i].GetType().Name, Model[i]); } %> This works well, apart from when the user submits the form the relevant controller action method just gets a List<Person>, rather than a list of Person, PersonTypeOne and PersonTypeTwo. This is pretty much as expected as the form submission doesn't contain enough information to tell the default model binder to create any instances of PersonTypeOne and PersonTypeTwo classes. So, is there any way to get such functionality from the default model binder?

• Grails - Language prefix in url mappings

  Hi there im having problem with language mappings. The way i want it to work is that language is encoded in the url like /appname/de/mycontroller/whatever If you go to /appname/mycontroller/action it should check your session and if there is no session pick language based on browser preference and redirect to the language prefixed site. If you have session then it will display english. English does not have en prefix (to make it harder). I think i did something wrong. Some of the reverse mappings work but some dont add language. If i use link tag and pass params:[lang:'pl'] then it works but if i add params:[lang:'pl', page:2] then it does not. In the second case both lang and page number become parameters in the query string. What is worse they dont affect the locale so page shows in english. Can anyone please point me to the documentation what are the rules of reverse mappings or even better how to implement such language prefix in a good way ? THANKS

• How does MVC ViewData work?

  I am toying around with an MVC application just to learn the technology. I am mocking up a check register application that keeps track of a checking account, what has cleared the bank and what has not. I am using EF for my model and everything seems to be working correctly insofar as Edit, Create, etc. However, I have a couple of totals at the top. One to show the bank's balance and another to show the actual balance. • Background problem on UITableView

  Hi ! I have come to a problem, wich I have no idea how to solve. Can anyone think outside the box and point me to right directions? I would be very thankfull ! The problem. I have a UITableView containing a first row wich is always the same (a empty row with repeating background) Next rows are bounch of dynamic data rows. • Battery backed write cache behavior upon disk change

  We use 3ware Inc 9650SE SATA-II RAID PCIe RAID controllers with battery backed write cache. Our spare hardware has the same controller. I was wondering; are these controllers smart enough not to sync the cache when the disks have been changed? For example, if I deploy one of those spare machines by putting in the disks of another machine and that spare machine still has pending writes, will it be smart enough not to perform those writes on the replaced array? Edit: my scenario is not really made clear, so let me give an example: server1 goes down because of power supply failure. I put the disks in server2 and start. I repair server1 I put the disks back from server2 in server1 (it's not relevant right now that in reality I would probably keep server2 running). If server1 doesn't have safeguards, it will write to the array, thinking it's simply powering up again, corrupting it.

• Center a TextBox over the top of a ScrollViewer in WPF.

  I have a MainView that contains a navigation bar which selects one of many XAML pages to be displayed in the page view pane. The MainView contains a ScrollViewer around the pages. This allows the pages to be whatever size they need to be and the MainView's ScrollViewer scrolls them. This all works great. On one of the pages, I need to (sometimes) center a TextBox in the middle of the page view pane (over the top of the page content). This was easily done by placing both the page content and the TextBox overlapping each other in a Grid (and I hide the TextBox as necessary). This all seems to work great. However, if the page content grows to be larger than the pane, the TextBox is centered not on the pane, but on the full page content. Thus, it moves from center screen down and/or to the right (and eventually off the screen). Bummer. Options: Remove the ScrollViewer from the MainView. This would require placing one on every page! Argh. Do option #1, and create a ScrolledPage base class. This is a lot of work, and I'm worried about tools issues (Blend issues). It also requires changing every page (to subclass this page). Somehow override the ScrollViewer on just this page. Then, place another ScrollViewer on the page content to Scroll it. Option 3 seems preferable, because it contains the issue to just modifying this page (instead of changing the rest of the pages). However, I can't figure out how to do it. Ideas? Thanks in advance! • PC will be turned off in safe mode

  I wanted to scan a Dell inspiron N5010 laptop in safe mode. When I took it to the safe mode environment and ran the AV to scan, after some while the PC went out! The power options menu options (when plug is in) are as follows: Screensaver after 4 mins. Dim to display after 10 mins. Turn off display after 15 mins. Hard disk, sleep and hibernate are all off (set to never). I tested the machine without scanning it, i.e, went to the safe mode and waited to see what occurs after time elapsing. By observations so far (because I can apply more tests to determine that where the problem exactly is), the problem is when the machine is in safe mode and is doing something (in current case, scanning). What do you think? Why it goes out in this situation please? Thanks in advance.

• Lost contact with my NAS after changing its IP

  I did some brain-dead reconfiguring of my D-Link DNS-323 NAS some days ago. I have a home network where each computer gets a dynamically allocated IP address starting at 192.168.1.100. The irritating point (for me at least) was that the NAS changed IP if the power went down or I turned off the router. I then had to remap a drive-letter to point to the new IP address of the NAS. To remedy that I configured the NAS to have a static IP, 192.168.0.10. I had no good reason to choose that IP, other than I found it in a user manual for the NAS. After I changed the IP and rebooted the NAS it disappeared from the network and was never to be found again. Now I have a black brick standing in my home, looking good, but "dead". Could anyone point me in a direction which helps me solve this problem? I have about 100gb worth of pic of my children on this brick so I really want it back :-) Sincerely,

  I need a powerful external Wi-Fi adapter for a couple of days. I heard that some types of router support this mode, allowing me to connect the router to my notebook and just use it as an external Wi-Fi interface. Is it possible to connect a router as an external Wi-Fi adapter? How can I determine it? Updated: My purpose is to set the router to monitor mode and check networks around through my notebook to provide better configuration for my network (power, channels, etc). My internal notebook Wi-Fi adapter is too weak for this purpose. Should I use special drivers for that? If yes, can someone describe, step-by-step, how to do it? p.s. I want to use ASUS RT-N56U as an external Wi-Fi adapter on OS X or Ubuntu.

• Tracking down random BSOD on windows 7

  I have gotten a computer running windows 7 handed to me that randomly, several times a day, bsods with a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (50) or WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (124). Crashes happens regardless of load. I am running out of ideas for how to track this down. Analyzing the minidumps shows the crash to be in ntkrnlmp.exe/WMIADAP.exe System has plenty of power (600w) Ram checks out fine using memtest86+ over a weekend. System is clean inside. No dust build up. Temperatures stay low. As far as I know (and reliability history shows) no new drivers were installed for several months before the problems started. All drivers are now up to date. sfc /scannow reports the system as clean. CHKDSK reports the disks as clean Removing the AV (Avast) has no effect. Any more things that should be tried on windows 7 before I start replacing the hardware?

• Using jQuery tools from within GWT -- is there a way to allow exchanges?

  I have a GWT web-app with a nearly full page Google map window. Inside the the map, I have infowindows which include links. What I want to do is use jquery tools overlays (http://flowplayer.org/tools/overlay/apple.html) to open the overlay and display it on top of the map once the link inside the info window is clicked. Now, the link source is generated dynamically, and it is hosted on a different server, so i have to open it in an iframe and set the source of the iframe before it opens. this seems simple enough since i only have 1 iframe on the page: function changeSource(url){ $("#menuIFrame").attr("src",url); } To call this before opening the overlay (which is done on mouse release), i create the following element in the google maps infowindow via GWT: <a href="http://whatever.com/menu/" onClick="changeSource('http://whatever.com/menu/');" rel=#menu"> View menu </a> Jquery tools works by opening whatever div has the id assigned to the value of 'rel', but because i have my javascript/jquery on my LandingPage.html in GWT, there appears to be some sort of disconnect between the two because the changeSource function is never called AND the overlay is never added to the window. Here's my app: http://truxmapper.appspot.com/ As you can see, the other overlays will work fine, but once you click an infowindow and try to view the menu, it will simply use the href to open the url in that window. Does anyone know of a solution that will allow me to accomplish my goal? Thanks!

• Juniper J4350 out of order

  I have got two (2) Juniper routers J4350 that are out of order : All the interfaces are down (leds on the interfaces don't ligthen, ping dosen't respond) No output on the console port (even when booting) I've tried to reset the router (holding the RESET CONFIG button on the front panel during 15 seconds) and nothing happened, even while booting the device I've opened the router to check the fans. I've removed some dust and nothing has changed. I wanted to precise that the leds on the front panel are all on: The POWER led is green The STATUS led is red The ALARM led is on and is orange The HA (High Availablity) is on and orange as well I have found nothing on the Internet to solve this problem... • MVC 2 - Name Attributes on HTML Input Field when using Parent/Child Entities

  Hi All, I'm pretty new to MVC 2 using the Entity Framework. I have two tables Company {ID int identity PK,Name nvarchar} and User {ID int identity PK,UserName nvarchar,CompanyID int FK}. A Foreign Key exists between User and Company. I generated my ADO.NET Entity Data Model, a Controller and a view to insert a record. My HTML form has the fields Company and UserName and the idea is when I click save a Company and User is inserted into the database. Sounds straight forward right! My question is as follows: I created a strongly-typed view derived from my 'User' entity. I'm using the the html helper Html.TextBoxFor(model = model.Organisation.Name) but the html name attribute for this input field is 'Organisation.Name'. My problem with this is that the dot throws up all sorts of issues in JQuery, which sees this as a property. If I want to change the name I read that I can use DataAnnotations but because I used the Entity Designer this involves using Buddy Classes. Seems like a bit of overkill just to change the html name attribute on this input field. Am I approaching this the right way or am I missing something here? Thanks for the help !

• MacBook Pro screen goes dark

  I've had my MacBook Pro for two years now; no problems so far (it has had 3rd party RAM from the get go). Today, I'm copying a particularly large VM from an External disk drive to local MacBook disk. It has about 3GB to go and I take off to do some other things and when I come back my screen is "dark". The computer is still on but I can't see anything. I forced a reboot by holding down the power button, it starts up with the "chimes", but still no screen. I've done this several times. Any ideas? Do you think the hard disk activity caused it to get too hot?

• No route matches when trying to edit

  Here's the scoop: I've created a test app that allows users to create ideas and then add "bubbles" to these ideas. Currently, a bubble is just text. I've successfully linked bubbles to ideas. Furthermore, when a user goes to view an idea it lists all of the bubbles attached to that idea. The user can even delete the bubble for any given idea. My problem lies in editing bubbles. When a user views an idea, he sees the idea's content as well as any bubbles for that idea. As a result, I've set all my bubble controls (editing and deleting) inside the ideas "show" view. My code for editing a bubble for an idea is <%= link_to 'Edit Bubble', edit_idea_bubble_path %>. I ran rake routes to find the correct path for editing bubbles and that is what was listed. Here's my error: No route matches {:action=>"edit", :controller=>"bubbles"} In my bubbles controller I have: def edit @idea = Idea.find(params[:idea_id]) @bubble = @idea.bubbles.find(params[:id]) end def update @idea = Idea.find(params[:idea_id]) @bubble = @idea.bubbles.find(params[:id]) respond_to do |format| if @bubble.update_attributes(params[:bubble]) format.html { redirect_to(@bubble, :notice => 'Bubble was successfully updated.') } format.xml { head :ok } else format.html { render :action => "Edit" } format.xml { render :xml => @bubble.errors, :status => :unprocessable_entity } end end end To go a step further, I have the following in my routes.rb file resources :ideas do resources :bubbles end So far everything seems to function except when I try to edit a bubble.   I've just purchased a HP ProLiant Microserver for home use. I want to set up with web server, samba shares, the usual stuff. My question is really about system setup. It has an internal USB socket so I've attempted to install a copy of Fedora 14 onto it. I turned off X/Gnome, but it still ran like a pig. I've now put the OS on one of the internal disks (250Gb, 7200rpm), but I was wondering if there was a way to utilise the internal USB to give me better power-saving allowing the hard drives to be shut down when not in use. How would you set this server up? I'd rather not go to the extra cost of an SSD right now, but if that's the best way then so be it.
