• Losing internet connectivity on server after installing LogMeIn Hamachi (with server set as gateway node)

  Our domain controller (SBS 2003) completely lost internet and network connectivity yesterday after I remotely installed LogMeIn Hamachi on it and set it to be a gateway node- in an attempt to create a VPN link between the server and a remote site. I had to go in to the office to resolve the problem as, unsurprisingly, my own remote access to the server was also lost. I was only able to restore network connectivity by deleting a virtual network adapter Hamachi created when making the server the gateway node (called "Hamachi bridge" I believe), then rebooting the server. This is a repeatable problem. Every time I try to get this to work, it just takes the server offline. Why would this bridge affect regular TCP/IP connectivity on the NIC in this way? I have tried a "hub-and-spoke" configuration between the server and our PC at a remote site (server set as hub, remote site as spoke). This caused no such problems with general internet connectivity, and file transfer worked well between the two computers. However, there was a DNS issue with the VPN between the two sites- resulting in Active Directory not being able to communicate between them (could not log on using domain user accounts at remote site if they were not already cached on that machine). I only tried a "gateway" network as LogMeIn support told me: If you can get the Active Directory to work it would only be through a "Gateway" network type with the server acting as the Gateway Node. You would configure the gateway settings on the server in the Hamachi client on that machine to push whatever IP's/DNS settings you prefer and at that point AD would be able (all things being equal) communicate to the client node when it attaches. We do not have any ActiveDirectory configuration info as that's outside the scope of our support. I hope this helps. It would be fantastic if I could get Active Directory to work over a Hamachi VPN connection, without worrying about the server going offline in this way. Does anyone have any ideas how I should proceed, or any theories as to what is going on when I try to use the "gateway" network type? I want to try to narrow down what is going on here.

• Returning null vs Throwing exceptions

  Is in a bit of disagreement with a more experienced developer on this issue, and was wondering what you guys here think about this. Environment is Java, EJB 3, services, etc. The code I wrote calls a service to get things and to create things. Problem was that I got null pointer exceptions in places that didn't make sense. For example when I asked the service to create an object, I got null back. And when I tried to look up an object with an id I knew existed, I still got null back. Was like it was ignoring me. Spent some time trying to figure out what was wrong in my code (since I'm less experienced I usually assume I have messed up). Turns out the reason was security. If the user principal using my service didn't have the right permissions to use the service I called from my service, then that service simply returned null. The services that are here already are usually not documented either, so this is just something you have to know... somehow... So here is the thing: I mean that this is rather confusing as a developer interacting with this service. To me it would make much more sense if that service thew an exception which would tell me that hey, you don't have the proper permissions to get info about this thing or to create this new thing. I would then immediately know why my service wasn't working as expected. However, he argued that asking is not wrong. Exceptions should only be thrown when there is an error and asking for a thing is not an error. Even if you don't have permission to "see" that the thing you asked for. The things are often looked up in a GUI by users and for those users not having the right permissions, these things simply "do not exist". So, in short: Asking is not wrong, hence no exception. Get methods return null because to those users those things "doesn't exist". Create methods return null because nothing was created, since the user wasn't allowed to create anything. So, what do you guys think? Is this normal and/or good practice? I prefer exceptions as I prefer throwing and catching exceptions because I find it much easier to know what's going on. So I would for example also prefer to throw a NotFoundException if you asked for an id which didn't exist, rather than returning null. Anyways, just curious to what others think about this as I'm not the most experienced developer yet.

• How do I tar dot files but not dot directories

  The following tar command will exclude all dot files and dot directories. tar -cvzf /media/bjackfly/bkup/bkup.gz --exclude '.*' --one-file-system /home/bjackfly In my case I want the dot files to be backed up in the home directory (.vimrc, .bashrc) etc. but not the dot directories /.config /.cache /.eclipse etc. Any Linux gurus with a command for this, or do I need to run a find into a tar or do two different tar commands which is non-ideal? One for dot files in the home directory and one for everything else?

• Justification for learning/implementing newer Microsoft technologies

  I work at a large healthcare organization as a mid-level software developer. I have over 10 years experience in the IT industry using Microsoft technologies (ASP.NET & SQL Server). When I go to conferences, code camps, .net user group meetings, I hear of all kinds of new tools and technologies: MVC, LINQ, Entity Framework, WCF Web Services, etc. I guess you could say I'm in my comfort zone using the same old stuff from asp.net 2.0. I use typed datasets for my data access layer. I use web forms and feature rich server controls with master pages. I know how to use plain old SQL and create queries in my typed datasets to get at data my applications need. Throughout my career, I'm always sensitive to not become obsolete with my skill set. What I currently use works fine and my development time is fast. But I'm concerned that if I were to be laid off, I would be asked in interviews how many MVC apps I've written. Or how I am with LINQ or WCF web services. I know that it doesn't matter how many conferences, books, or videos I watch on some new technology...I have to implement/use it or it simply won't sink in. Also, managers who interview don't care how much someone reads up on something, only real use and experience with a technology. I have a new project to write. I've gone to my manager and have asked for additional time for the project for learning/implementing technology I may not be familiar with. Our organization encourages its employees to "learn and grow" and to continue are education. But I always get resistance when I ask for more time to ramp up on something new to implement. My manager is asking for concrete business reasons for implementing these new technologies. I don't have business reasons. My reasons are because I don't want to become obsolete. I could say it would make the project more maintainable in the future by other developers since at some point people could stop using these older technologies, but that' about all I can think of. Does Linq/Entity Framework/MCV apps perform better? So much so that the customers (users in departments I'm creating this app for) need? I doubt it. I'm interested in you guy's thoughts on this. Do many of you have similar plights with trying to use newer upcoming technologies? I doubt I'm on the bleeding edge of technology, either. Are there "business reasons" that you would bring to light for using these technologies? Thanks in advance! Sorry for the long wall of text.

  I'm on an EC2 instance and have a domain domain.com linked to the EC2 nameservers and it happily is serving my pages if I type domain.com in the URL. However when the page is served it resolves the url to: 1.1.1.10/directory/page.php. • Install proprietary drivers 14.04 NVIDIA (steam segmentation issue)

  Recently, I finally got the official drivers for my NVIDIA 560 Ti card installed on Ubuntu 14.04 (hooray) However I started looking into installing Steam and I'm getting segmentation errors when I try to run the software. I tried installing 32-bit libs and it seemed like they weren't available or they were already installed. Upon further investigation, I found that a solution is to install the proprietary drivers, install steam then switch back to the other drivers. I'm not really sure what "proprietary drivers" are in all honesty. Has anyone gone through this process that could provide some insight here? (I installed the official 64-bit driver from the NVIDIA site for my 560 Ti just for reference. And the Ubuntu version installed is 64-bit as well) Update: This is the error text I get when trying to run steam after installing it via the ubuntu store. • Copying files to zfs mountpoint doesn't work - the files aren't actually copied to the other filesystem,

  I have 3 x 4 TB disks in a NAS that I want to group together and access as if they were one whole 'unit' of some kind. I also have a 250GB disk containing the OS - this is full of films and tv shows currently. I thought zfs sounded good so I created a raidz zpool, after installing the ppa sudo zpool create store raidz /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd and set the mountpoint to /mnt/store sudo zfs set mountpoint=/mnt/store /store checked it was successful - I think it was sudo zfs list NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT store 266K 7.16T 170K /mnt/store Then I wanted to move over a whole load of files from my home directory. I went to where the to-be-copied folder was (called media) and entered sudo cp -R * /mnt/store cp: cannot create directory `/mnt/store/media': No space left on device It seems like it's not copying over to the new filesystem I made (or thought I did). I've never really done this type of thing until a few days ago so may be running before I can walk... is this not the right way to copy files across? I've only used windows before so the idea of mountpoints is a bit mind boggling. I'm using XBMCbuntu 12 beta 2.0 which is based on 12.04. Will retry with normal Ubuntu 12.04 desktop to see if that's the problem. thanks for the help!

I guess what I'm choking on is: if I'm already logged in as a valid system user, why do I have to be a superuser/root in order to modify things that the sysadmin has already deemed me worthy of accessing? (2) Is there a GUI (Gnome, KDE) equivalent to sudo? Is there a way to assume a superuser role through a graphical context, rather than from inside a new shell? (3) I can't access the /root directory logged in as myself... but I installed the system to begin with and was never asked to create a root account! How do I log in as root and gain access to /root?!? Thanks for all feedback & input!

• Upgrading Code from 2007 to 2010

  So I’ve been doing some upgrades just to see if things will work from 2007 to 2010.  So far most of the stuff I want works, but obviously there are some things that break.  Did you guys know that in 2007 you could add a webpart to the view pages for lists and libraries without losing the toolbar?  In 2010 the ribbon disappears every time you add a webpart.  So if you are using Scot Hillier’s Codeplex project to hide buttons it will not work the same way, because the ribbon is going to disappear altogether. I have also learned another reason why standalone installations are the bane of my existence.  Nine times out of ten the installation is done using Network Service as the application pool account.  You are wondering why is this bad?  Well, let’s just say the site collection administrator with local admin rights wants to attach the IIS Worker process and debug say a webpart.  Visual Studio 2010 will throw a nasty error that tells you that you are not an administrator.  You will say, but I am an administrator?  I have all the correct group permissions on the server and on SQL and in SharePoint.  Then you will go in and decide let’s add my own admin account just to see if I can attach the debugger and you will notice that works properly.  So the morale of the story is create a separate account on your development environment to run all the SharePoint Services and such.  You don’t need to go all out and create the best practices amount of accounts if it’s just your dev environment.  I would at least create one single account to run all your SharePoint process (Services, SQL, and App Pool).  Also, don’t run a standalone install unless you want to kill kittens (this is a quote from Todd Klindt).  We love kittens they are cute and awesome.  Besides you learn more if you click Complete and just skip standalone.  You will learn how to setup SQL Server 2008 and you will learn how to configure your environment.  It will help you in the long run.  So I have ranted enough for today I figure these are enough tidbits for you this time around.  The two of you who read my blog and I know some of you are friends who don’t understand SharePoint.  I might as well have just done “wahwahwahwah” in Charlie Brown adult speak.  Thanks for reading as usual.  I’ll catch you all when I complain more about the upgrade process and share more tidbits, which will inevitably become a presentation at a conference or two. Just in case, you have WLS 10.3.6 running in 32-bit mode and the JDK being used is installed for 64-bit mode [On Solaris OS, JDK 64-bit installation comprises of installing 32-bit JDK followed by a patch for 64-bit JDK].  Verification of the mode being used One can verify the mode of Weblogic Server in the following ways Either check the commonEnv.sh script located at $MIDDLEWARE_HOME/wlserver_10.3/common/bin where $MIDDLEWARE_HOME refers to the install directory of Middleware. • 403 Forbidden when trying to download file that was uploaded using SSH

  I have FTP access to an Apache server on linux to upload files so that they can be downloadable from the web. I recently was granted SSH access for extra permissions and figured that it would be quicker to download the files directly to the server, instead of downloading them to my machine then FTPing to the server. When I downloaded a file using SSH to the server, and then placed it in the public_html directory, it was not visible from the web. The permissions (from SSH and the FTP client) were the same as all the other files that are visible, but it was not visible in the directory listing, and if I tried to type in the filename into my browser I would get a 403 error. Obviously, when I FTP a file to the server something else happens that makes it web visible, that I am not currently privy to. What am I missing that is causing the file to be invisible from the web?
