• How to execute a Ruby file in Java, capable of calling functions from the Java program and receiving primitive-type results?

  I do not fully understand what am I asking (lol!), well, in the sense of if it is even possible, that is. If it isn't, sorry. Suppose I have a Java program. It has a Main and a JavaCalculator class. JavaCalculator has some basic functions like public int sum(int a,int b) { return a + b } Now suppose I have a ruby file. Called MyProgram.rb. MyProgram.rb may contain anything you could expect from a ruby program. Let us assume it contains the following: class RubyMain def initialize print "The sum of 5 with 3 is #{sum(5,3)}" end def sum(a,b) # <---------- Something will happen here end end rubyMain = RubyMain.new Good. Now then, you might already suspect what I want to do: I want to run my Java program I want it to execute the Ruby file MyProgram.rb When the Ruby program executes, it will create an instance of JavaCalculator, execute the sum function it has, get the value, and then print it. The ruby file has been executed successfully. The Java program closes. Note: The "create an instance of JavaCalculator" is not entirely necessary. I would be satisfied with just running a sum function from, say, the Main class. My question: is such possible? Can I run a Java program which internally executes a Ruby file which is capable of commanding the Java program to do certain things and get results? In the above example, the Ruby file asks the Java program to do a sum for it and give the result. This may sound ridiculous. I am new in this kind of thing (if it is possible, that is). WHY AM I ASKING THIS? I have a Java program, which is some kind of game engine. However, my target audience is a bunch of Ruby coders. I don't want to have them learn Java at all. So I figured that perhaps the Java program could simply offer the functionality (capacity to create windows, display sprites, play sounds...) and then, my audience can simply code with Ruby the logic, which basically justs asks my Java engine to do things like displaying sprites or playing sounds. That's when I though about asking this.

• What is the simplest human readable configuration file format?

  Current configuration file is as follows: mainwindow.title = 'test' mainwindow.position.x = 100 mainwindow.position.y = 200 mainwindow.button.label = 'apply' mainwindow.button.size.x = 100 mainwindow.button.size.y = 30 logger.datarate = 100 logger.enable = True logger.filename = './test.log' This is read with python to a nested dictionary: { 'mainwindow':{ 'button':{ 'label': {'value':'apply'}, ... }, 'logger':{ datarate: {'value': 100}, enable: {'value': True}, filename: {'value': './test.log'} }, ... } Is there a better way of doing this? The idea is to get XML type of behavior and avoid XML as long as possible. The end user is assumed almost totally computer illiterate and basically uses notepad and copy-paste. Thus the python standard "header + variables" type is considered too difficult. The dummy user edits the config file, able programmers handle the dictionaries. Nested dictionary is chosen for easy splitting (logger does not need or even cannot have/edit mainwindow parameters).

• BoundingBox Intersection Problems

  When I try to render two cubes, same sizes, one beside the other. With the same proportions (XYZ). My problem is, why do a Box1.BoundingBox.Contains(Box2.BoundingBox) == ContaintmentType.Intersects - when it clearly doesn't? I'm trying to place objects with BoundingBoxes as "intersection" checking, but this simple example clearly shows that this doesn't work. Why is that? I also try checking height of the next object to be placed, by checking intersection, adding each boxes height += (Max.Y - Min.Y) to a Height value, so when I add a new Box it has a height value. This works, but sometimes due to strange behavior it adds extra values when there isn't anything there. Because this way I can never automatically check for intersections or place cube beside eachother.

• Encrypt images before uploading to Dropbox [migrated]

  I want to encrypt a file first before the file will be uploaded to the dropbox. So i have implement the encryption inside the uploading of the codes. However, there is an error after i integrate the codes together. Where did my mistake go wrong? Error at putFileOverwriteRequest and it says The method putFileOverwriteRequest(String, InputStream, long, ProgressListener) in the type DropboxAPI is not applicable for the arguments (String, FileOutputStream, long, new ProgressListener(){}) Another problem is that this FileOutputStream fis = new FileOutputStream(new File("dont know what to put in this field")); i do not know where to put the file so that after i read the file, it will call the path and then upload to the Dropbox. • Java PHP posting using URLConnector, PHP file doesn't seem to receive parameters

  Hi there, I am trying to post some simple string data to my php script via a java application. My PHP script works fine when I enter the data myself using a web browser (newvector.php?x1=&y1=...) • Records not being saved to core data sqlite file

  I'm a complete newbie when it comes to iOS programming and much less Core Data. It's rather non-intuitive for me, as I really came into my own with programming with MATLAB, which I guess is more of a 'scripting' language. At any rate, my problem is that I had no idea what I had to do to create a database for my application. So I read a little bit and thought I had to create a SQL database of my stuff and then import it. Long story short, I created a SQLite db and I want to use the work I have already done to import stuff into my CoreData database. I tried exporting to comma-delimited files and xml files and reading those in, but I didn't like it and it seemed like an extra step that I shouldn't need to do. So, I imported the SQLite database into my resources and added the sqlite framework. I have my core data model setup and it is setting up the SQLite database for the model correctly in the background. When I run through my program to add objects to my entities, it seems to work and I can even fetch results afterward. However, when I inspect the Core Data Database SQLite file, no records have been saved.   In the program below, I am trying to cause the following to happen: Process A assigns a value to a stack variable a. Process A (parent) creates process B (child) with PID child_pid. Process B calls function func1, passing a pointer to a. Process B changes the value of variable a through the pointer. Process B opens its /proc/self/mem file, seeks to the page containing a, and prints the new value of a. Process A (at the same time) opens /proc/child_pid/mem, seeks to the right page, and prints the new value of a. The problem is that, in step 6, the parent only sees the old value of a in /proc/child_pid/mem, while the child can indeed see the new value in its /proc/self/mem. Why is this the case?   The problem doesn't seemed to have anything to do with Hibernate. As I've commented the Hibernate stuff but I'm still getting it. If I comment out this line message = staffDAO.searchForStaff(search); in my controller file, it goes through ok. But I don't see anything wrong with searchForStaff function.   I'm trying to install ModSecurity on nginx with the following instructions : wget https://github.com/SpiderLabs/ModSecurity/archive/master.zip unzip master cd ModSecurity-master ./autogen.sh ./configure --enable-standalone-module And i got the following error : Checking plataform...   I scanned a document on a scanner at a friend's house and the pdf ended up being 35 inches by 45 inches in size. I think this the cause of the trouble had for the person I sent it to, they get the error "insufficient image". How can I scale this down in Adobe Acrobat X Pro to a normal 8.5x11 inch sheet so that I can see if that resolves their issue and I can share the document with them. I cannot rescan the document, as I no longer have it. Acrobat is running on Windows 7 OS. The scanner was an HP OfficeJet Pro L7650 All-in-one.

  I know that Yahoo and Google mail support 25MB email attachments. I have an idea from somewhere that 10MB email messages are generally supported by modern email systems. So if I'm sending an email between two arbitrary users on the internet, what's the safe upper bound on message size? 1MB? 10MB? 25MB? I know that one answer is 'don't send big emails, use some sort of drop box'. I'm looking for a guideline if you are limited to only using regular smtp email.

• All PHP sites stopped working on IIS7, internal server error 500

  I installed multiple drupal 7 sites using the Web Platform Installer on Windows Server 2008. Until know they worked without any problems, but recently internal server error 500 started to show up (once every so many requests), now it happens for all requests to any of the php sites. Register new PHP version to enable PHP via FastCGI So I tried to register the php version again C:\Program Files\PHP\v5.3\php-cgi.exe But when I try to apply the changes I get There was an error while performing this operation Details: Operation is not valid due to the current state of the object There doesn't seem to be any other information than that. I have no idea why all of a sudden php isn't available for the sites anymore. PS: I have rebooted IIS, the server, etc... This server is hosted on amazon S3, so I gave the server some more power Update These seem to be two different issues I used memory_limit=128MB instead of memory_limit=128M Notice the "M" instead of "MB" A memory_limit of 128M was not enough, had to increase it to 512M The first issue caused internal server errors for every request. Increasing to 512MB seemed to have solved the problem for a little while, but after a while the server errors return. Note that the PHP manager inside of IIS still shows there is no PHP available for the sites (the global config does see it as available) So the problem remains unsolved

  looked around on the site but nothing really concrete on my question. i will have about 120GB of data total, files are made up of 5MB files, excel, word and about 25 .pst files that are about 1.2GB each. Yes they use .pst over network, even though it is not recommended this is legacy setup without issue so we will continue to support this for another year or so. I need to know what you think about a stripe size of 256kb for the raid 10 based on the above requirements. I did try and bench with these settings and it seems alright without any real issue, just trying to rule out anything i might of missed. thanks.

• Can only see part of the screen when connecting via NX, how can I control NX size?

  I'm using NoMachine's NX client on OSX 10.7.2 to connect to an NX server running on Ubuntu 10.04.3. I've chosen the Gnome desktop during the connection creation. The NX screen that opens is smaller than the Gnome screen running "behind" it it looks like it's 1024x768, while the screen "behind" it looks to be running 1680x1050. The result is naturally very inconvenient (e.g. can't see the taskbar, can't click lower options in popup menus, etc.). In the past I've used NX client successfully to connect and see the entire screen. Resizing the NX window only resizes the transferred image, but does not let me see more of the Gnome desktop. Playing with the NX client display options also does the same. How can I control the size of the NX client, and make it show the entire Gnome desktop?

  Hello I cannot copy photos and paste them from a word document into the text of an email on my Sony Laptop having already substantially redcued the size of the photos using Microsoft Office Picture Manager. I can readily manage to perform this functjon from my work place PC but am presently working mostly from home. I am trying to email photos and text using a btinternet.com email address but have checked that I cannot perform the task using my alternate googlemail email address either. In this case Libre Office bloated the size of the workbook for some reason unknown to me. I would like to know if Libre Office does this to all Excel workbooks or just something in that workbook that causes it. Software involved: Microsoft Office Excel 2010 Libre Office 3.5.x (exact version unknown) Dropbox (merely to sync changes) Platforms involved: Office on Windows (master of the obvious on that one I suppose..)   I have installed Sawfish 1.8.2 from source on my new Ubuntu 12.04 installation following the Debian instructions, but I had this problem also with the stock 1.5.3. Whenever I define dimensions in the Window Rules for a window, the size is off by exactly 226x238 pixels, which means that 100x100 turns into 326x328. That's a very odd behavior, given that Sawfish is saving and loading the dimensions of the windows correctly (if saved via the window menu). Some additional system information: $ uname -a Linux Dagon 3.2.0-24-generic-pae #39-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 21 18:54:21 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux $ sawfish --version sawfish version 1.8.2 nvidia proprietary driver, 9600GT Two monitors, 1920x1080 + 1440x900 in one session. Positionng the windows is working fine, only the dimensions are off by that odd number. Does somebody have an idea why?

• How can I check the actual size used in an NTFS directory with many hardlinks?

  On a Win7 NTFS volume, I'm using cwrsync which supports --link-dest correctly to create "snapshot" type backups. So I have: z:\backups\2010-11-28\cygdrive\c\Users\... z:\backups\2010-12-02\cygdrive\c\Users\... The content of 2010-12-02 is mostly hardlinks back to files in the 2010-11-28 directory, but there are a few new or changed files only in 2010-12-02. On linux, the 'du' utility will tell me the actual size taken by each incremental snapshot. On Windows, explorer and du under cygwin are both fooled by hardlinks and shows 2010-12-02 taking up a little more space than 2010-11-28. Is there a Windows utility that will show the correct space acutally used?

• Why does Notepad "randomly" make pasted text a smaller font size?

  Sometimes when I copy and paste text into Notepad, it will paste the text in the default Notepad font and size, however, the latter half of the pasted line will be multiple font sizes smaller. I'm stumped as to why this is happening. I wondered if it was perhaps some type of hidden formatting that was being copied into Notepad, but I believe that Notepad strips the formatting. I've subsequently taken the same text and tried copy and pasting it into URL bars and CMD prompts to strip any potential formatting (even though it was plaintext copied from web), and then re-pasted into Notepad, but it still leaves this phenomenon. Additionally, when resizing the Notepad window, it will change what portion of the line is default sized and downsized, as seen in the screenshot posted below. The three windows are actually the same Notepad window, each with a different resizing and the resulting text resizing.
