Fabric doesn't launch Nginx remotely

I want to be able to start and stop an nginx server on an Ubuntu EC2 instance with Fabric. I have this two scripts in my fabfile.py: def start_nginx(): sudo('/etc/init.d/nginx start') #also tried this: run('sudo /etc/init.d/nginx start') def stop_nginx(): sudo('/etc/init.d/nginx stop') The start_nginx() seemingly runs without errors (* Starting Nginx Server.../ ...done.) but doesn't start the server (or it dies immediately). If I SSH into the instance this starts nginx perfectly: sudo /etc/init.d/nginx start The stop_nginx() Fabric script stops the server remotely. I compiled nginx from source, using this http://nginx.org/download/nginx-1.1.9.tar.gz and using this script in /etc/init.d: https://github.com/JasonGiedymin/nginx-init-ubuntu/blob/master/nginx. The only thing I modified is this line: DAEMON=/usr/local/sbin/nginx to DAEMON=/usr/sbin/nginx because that's the path I used when I ./configure-d my compile. Does anyone have any idea why the init script behaves differently being called from Fabric?

What are the correct set of DLLs and placement for SSL support in mIRC on 64 bit Windows?

I am using mIRC 6.35 on a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit. No matter what versions of the OpenSSL DLLs I use, nor where I place them, I cannot get mIRC to work with SSL; I get the "ssl not supported" error. The recommended DLLs on mIRC's help page (/ssl.html on the mIRC site) do not work no matter if I put them in the mIRC Program Files folder or anywhere else. Same with the DLLs from http://www.slproweb.com/products/Win32OpenSSL.html which also require Visual C++ runtimes. I am unsure if I need the 32bit DLLs (because mIRC itself is 32 bit), or the 64-bit DLLs, nor where to correctly place them. (Perhaps I currently have a case of incorrect DLLs in a path I am not aware of overriding the other placements...) Does ANYONE have any tips for 'debugging' this, or do they themselves have it working? Thanks in advance!

How to copy directories using debugfs?

The debugfs manpage gives the impression that the command 'rdump . .' will recursively copy all files found on the specified filesystem from the debugfs cwd to the native filesystem's cwd. Instead I seem to receive a syntax error, and no copy is initiated? These are the commands I run: cd /path/to/transfer/destination debugfs /dev/sda1 -R rdump . . My task is to copy the entire contents of a clean yet unmountable USB storage device to its host machine's HD. The host machine does not support the inode size used by the USB device's filesystem (256) and its software is not upgradeable, so my intention was to use debugfs to transfer the files. If anyone has any other suggestions for this task I'd be grateful.

Attachments in Oracle BPM 11g – Create a BPM Process Instance by passing an Attachment

Problem Statement: On a recent engagement I had a requirement where we needed to create BPM instances using a message start event. The challenge was that the instance needed to be created after polling a file location and attaching the picked up file (pdf) as an attachment to the instance. Proposed Solution: I was contemplating using process API to accomplish this,but came up with a solution which involves a BPEL process to pickup the file and send a notification to the BPM process by passing the attachment as a payload. The following are some of the brief steps that were used to build the solution: BPM Process to receive an attachment as part of the payload: The BPM Process is a very simple process which has a Message Start event that accepts the attachment as an argument and a Simple User Task that the user can use to view the attachment (as part of the OOTB attachment panel). The Input payload is based on AttachmentPayload.xsd. The 3 key elements of the the payload are: <xsd:element name="filename" type="xsd:string"/> <xsd:element name="mimetype" type="xsd:string"/> <xsd:element name="content" type="xsd:base64Binary"/> A screenshot of the Human task data assignment that need to performed to attach the file is provided here. Once the process and the UI project (default generated UI) are deployed to the SOA server, copy the wsdl location of the process service (from EM). This WSDL would be used in the BPEL project to create the Instances in the BPM process after a file is polled. BPEL Process to Poll for File and create instances in the BPM process: For the BPEL process a File adapter was configured as a Read service (File Streaming option and keeping the Schema as Opaque). Once a location and the file pattern to poll are provided the Readservice Partner Link was wired to Invoke the BPEL Process. Also, using the BPM Process WSDL, we can create the Webservice reference and can invoke the start operation. Before we do the assignment for the Invoke operation, a global variable should be created to hold the value of the fileName of the file. The mapping to the global variable can be done on the Receive activity properties (jca.file.FileName). So for the assign operation before we invoke the BPM process service, we can get the content of the file from the receive input variable and the fileName from the jca.file.FileName property. The mimetype needs to be hard coded to the mime-type of the file: application/pdf (I am still researching ways to derive the mime type as it is not available as part of the jca.file properties). A few days ago I bought a HP Envy 14, containing 2 graphics card: An integrated Intel graphics card, and an ATI HD 5650. I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit on the machine. Most things work fine out of the box, but the graphics cards are giving me trouble. When booting, I get the message "failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled". Then the screen blanks out during the remaining boot period. I am able to get the display working by changing to one of the consoles, then closing and opening the laptop's lid. It seems that Ubuntu gets confused about which card to use. I've read here: http://www.andreas-demmer.de/en/2010/07/18/testbericht-linux-auf-dem-hp-envy-14 that I should be able to turn off one the cards by echoing keywords into /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch, but that path is not available on my system. The BIOS does not have any methods to switch of the ATI card. Help anyone? /Carsten

I been trying to use mod_proxy with httpd and tomcat... I have on VirtualBox running Scientific Linux which has httpd and tomcat 6 on it.. I made two nodes of tomcat6. How do I properly use String literals for loading content?

I've been using verbatim string literals for some time now, and never quite thought about using a regular string literal until I started to come across them in Microsoft provided XNA samples. With that said, I'm trying to implement a new AudioManager class from the Net Rumble sample. I have two (2) issues here: Question 1: In my code for my GameplayScreen screen I have a folder location written as the following, and it works fine: menuButton = content.Load<SoundEffect>(@"sfx/menuButton"); menuClose = content.Load<SoundEffect>(@"sfx/menuClose"); If you notice, you'll see that I'm using a verbatim string, with a forward slash "/". In the AudioManager class, they use a regular string literal, but with two backslashes "\". I understand that one is used as an escape, but why are they BACK instead of FORWARD? (See below) soundList[soundName] = game.Content.Load<SoundEffect>("audio\\wav\\"+ soundName); Question 2: I seem to be doing everything correctly in my AudioManager class, but I'm not sure of what this line means: audioFileList = audioFolder.GetFiles("*.xnb"); I suppose that the *xnb means look for everything BUT files that end in *xnb? I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with my file locations, as the sound effects are not playing. My PowerShell functions do not appear to be used

Hi there, I have a ps1 script in which I define 2 functions as such: function Invoke-Sql([string]$query) { Invoke-Sqlcmd -ServerInstance $Server -Database $DB -User $User -Password $Password -Query $query } function Get-Queued { Invoke-Sql "Select * From Comment where AwaitsModeration = 1" } I then call the ps1 file by typing it in (it's in a folder in the path, and autocompletion works) However, I cannot start using the functions. I am confused, because when I copy / paste the functions into the console, all is fine and they work. I also have a function defined in my profile, and it works. Where am I thinking wrong, why doesn't it work what I'm trying to do?

Connecting a Samsung Galaxy S3 in Ubuntu 13.04

In 13.04, whenever I connect an Android device, one of three things happens: 1 . It mounts successfully (maybe once out of 3 attempts) 2 . It fails to mount with the following error message: Oops! Something went wrong. Unhandled error message: Unable to open MTP device 3 . This one occasionally happens: Unhandled error message: No such interface `org.gtk.vfs.Mount' on object at path /org/gtk/vfs/mount/1 Regardless of activity (even when successfully mounted) it will continuously spam the following error message: Unable to mount SAMSUNG_Android Unable to open MTP Device '[usb:003,00x]' where x seems to be an arbitrary number below 10 and continues counting up with each new error message until the device is unplugged. I've also just noticed that even if it mounts successfully, it unmounts after about 30 seconds and starts spamming the error message above. The Android device is unlocked, always on and fully charged. ADB seems to function normally. Any suggestions? Further info: this happens on both a stock Samsung S3 and an Xperia Arc S running a custom AOSP based ROM. I've also tried the steps outlined in this Stack Overflow answer, but the problem persists. UPDATE: After doing a dist-upgrade (May 8th 2013), the Xperia Arc S on AOSP ROM now mounts and behaves normally. The S3, however, still behaves as described above. UPDATE: After careful observation, ABD does not, in fact, behave normally. If the error message above appears while sending an app to the device, the attempt is aborted with an error message saying that the device is unavailable.

What is the official installer for Unix packages on Mac OS?

I'm a bit confused about the installation of standard Unix packages on Mac OS X. For example, I have /usr/bin/svn, which is SVN v.1.4.4, but FinkCommander says svn is not installed. The same holds for other packages, like emacs etc. Is that just a wrong FinkCommander setting? Currently it is set to install everything in /sw, which is not even in the PATH. So, do I just have to set it to install packages to /usr, and it will recognize the installed software? I don't want to install duplicate packages of everything, and it is quite weird that the FinkCommander seems not to be in sync with the installed software. Or is there any other installer I should be using? Is Mac Ports the recommended installer to use? (I'm using Mac OS 10.5.8.)

Are there any actual case studies on rewrites of software success/failure rates?

I've seen multiple posts about rewrites of applications being bad, peoples experiences about it here on Programmers, and an article I've ready by Joel Splosky on the subject, but no hard evidence of case studies. Other than the two examples Joel gave and some other posts here, what do you do with a bad codebase and how do you decide what to do with it based on real studies? For the case in point, there are two clients I know of that both have old legacy code. They keep limping along with it because as one of them found out, a rewrite was a disaster, it was expensive and didn't really work to improve the code much. That customer has some very complicated business logic as the rewriters quickly found out. In both cases, these are mission critical applications that brings in a lot of revenue for the company. The one that attempted the rewrite felt that they would hit a brick wall at some point if the legacy software didn't get upgraded at some point in the future. To me, that kind of risk warrants research and analysis to ensure a successful path. My question is have there been actual case studies that have investigated this? I wouldn't want to attempt a major rewrite without knowing some best practices, pitfalls, and successes based on actual studies. Aftermath: okay, I was wrong, I did find one article: Rewrite or Reuse. They did a study on a Cobol app that was converted to Java.

Entry / JR Php Programmer - What do I learn next?

I got very interested in programming toward the end of college. Took a few classes, but learned most everything on my own via books and such. Its mostly been Php and MySQL. Right out of school, I got a job working at a company for 2 years (web media) and ended up learning a lot of stuff and programming some things for them. I am no longer at that company but I am looking for my next steps as a programmer. I really enjoy Web Development and Php and MySQL seems to be my thing. Basically, I know how to do CRUD operations, i am mediocre at OOP and still have more to learn, I know HTML and CSS quite well, I know my way around a Unix terminal and can access MySQL through it and set up cron jobs and such. I know some basic Javascript. Whats a good next step? I don't anything about 3rd party services, PDO, APIs (twitter, facebook, etc), Drupal / Joomla, Unit Testing, E-Commerce, PECL, PEAR ....in other words A LOT I get easily overwhelmed by the amount of stuff there is to learn, so I'm sort of trying to find a path. Right now, I'm digging into OOP more, as that seems like a good conceptual first-step. Any suggestions?

WP E Commerce Safe Mode restriction error [on hold]

I have my online shop, created with WP Ecommerce getting broken after I moved it to another server. I could be sure that the problem comes from WP Ecommerce because when I disable that plugin. I thought it was some kind of permission issue, so I tried to change /tmp permission to 777. Nothing happens. I googled it some more and suspect it might have something to do with fastCGI configuration and stuff. Which I totally don't understand. My googling result mostly suggest me to consult the web hosting provider or even to move to another host. But in this case, I am the owner of the server (VPS with cPanel/WHM). And I don't have any idea how to solve this kind of problem.

Chrome Java Plugin not working after moving Java installation directory

I recently moved all my Java installations from C:\Program Files\Java to D:\Java, as my C:\ partition only had a few MB of free space left and windows kept on bugging me about it. I also edited every registry entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft that pointed to the old directory to now point to the new one. Then changed the PATH variables and removed the old files, did a restart, and all Java applications work just fine. Yet, Chrome is the only application that seems to have a problem with what I did, as the Java Plugin isn't recognized any more. Are there any registry entires I may have missed? Maybe in the Chrome registry? How can I make this work again?

How to make FileZilla open all the required files with one click

Is there any way of configuring FileZilla so that I can open all the files on a server that I use to edit with just one click. For example if the files are like this: /home/abc/def/one.txt /home/abc/def/yet/another/directory/two.txt /home/abc/def/ghi/yet/another/directory/three.txt Then it is very time-consuming to navigate through each directory and open the required files. These are only 3 files but what if we have around 10 to 20 files? Yes, copying the path of the directories is one thing. But something that is built-in so that I can just click a button like open all the required files of this connection and it opens all the files in the editor (as set in FileZilla preferences) then that would be great!

setting up rhel 5.x RPM build server for mortal users

My task is to setup a RHEL 5.x build host, that can build RPMs for mortal users. On RHEL 6.x with rpm version 4.8, I have in /usr/lib/macros: # Path to top of build area. %_topdir %{getenv:HOME}/rpmbuild On RHEL 5.x with rpm version 4.4, the %{getevn:HOME} is not available. I know that I can use /home/someuser/.rpmmacros: %_topdir /home/someuser/rpmbuild and this will work for that user, however I don't want to do this for every user separately. Moreover, since .rpmmacro will not expand ${HOME} or ~ I suspect it is unsafe to use those. This in turn make /etc/skel unstable for this task (or so I suspect). So in short, my question is: How to setup RHEL 5.x host that allow all users to build RPM packages in their home directory?

Why are my at jobs running immediately on OS X?

I want to schedule events for exact times in Mac OS X. It seems like the 'at' command is the simplest way to do this. I have enabled atrun using the command: launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.atrun.plist To test at, I'm using the following one-line BASH script: echo 'foo' path/to/log.txt | at now + 2 minutes When I run the script, I get output like: job 17 at Sat May 15 12:57:00 2010 where '12:57:00' is indeed 2 minutes in the future. But the echo command executes immediately: the line 'foo' is added to log.txt right away. How can I make at work for me?

Windows 7, file properties, date modified, how do you show seconds?

Anyone know a way to immediately show the seconds of a file's date modified property in the GUI? So if you create a file, any file in any directory, right-click and choose Properties, the date modified (if it's recent) will say something like "dd/mm/yyy hh:mm, one minute ago" - reminder this is in Windows 7. Windows XP did it normally. Then they changed something. If you wait a while, eventually you'll see the seconds, I'm not sure how long a while is, but this is incredibly annoying if you want to troubleshoot something that relies on the seconds of timestamps... is there a setting? registry key I can change perhaps? I'm literally using Chrome, pasting in the path of the directory to be able to see the seconds quickly (as a workaround) but would be nice to be able to use Win7.

Simple active directory permissions issue

So I've created a domain controller (DC) as well as 3 machines (SQL-A, SQL-B, SQL-CORE). All are running Windows Server2008R2 (on virtualbox). I have successfully joined the 3 machines to the domain controller. Next I created a user in active directory called Kim_Akers who is a member of "Domain Admins", "Domain users", "Enterprise Admins" and "Schema Admins". However when I login to SQL-A for example as contso/Kim_Akers and then try and run something like the ServerManager.msc I can't do it due to lack of permissions "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions". What am I doing wrong that Kim_Akers doesn't have permissions to do this? Thanks.
