• login takes long time

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 from past 12 days. In the beginning login was fast enough after I put the password it hardly takes 3 to 4 sec to enter in desktop, but now its taking like more that 40 sec to show desktop after entering password. whats the problem, is there any solution? • How important is patch management?

  Problem I'm trying to sell the idea of organizational patch/update management and antivirus management to my superiors. Thus far, my proposition has been met with two responses: We haven't had any issues yet (I would add that we know of) We just don't think it's that big of a risk. Question Are there any resources available that can help me sell this idea? I've been told that 55-85% of all security related issues can be resolved by proper anti-virus and patch/update management but the individual that told me couldn't substantiate the claim. Can it be substantiated? Additional Information 1/5 of our computers (the ones on the building) have Windows update turned on by default and anti-virus installed. 4/5 of our computers are outside corporate and the users currently have full control over anti-virus and Windows updates (I know this is an issue, one step at a time).

• Windows 7 Computer Maintenance - Restore removed Desktop Shortcuts

  I'm aware about the inbuilt nightmate 'tool' of Microsofts which is making every network administrators job a nightmare (if left turned on). In short it'll happily delete every desktop shortcut to a network resource. We have it disabled by default. My question is related to recovering these shortcuts, Windows doesn't seem to dump them into the Recycle Bin and although you can 'restore previous versions' of the Desktop folder, you are unable to do it with the user logged in... Rather a problem if you only have the 1 user account. We have a user who (although the 'Computer Maintenance' tool is turned off) had it come up in 'Action Centre' and chose to run it. I've been unable to reproduce it, but the tool has certainly run (and removed 24 shortcuts from her desktop) although it is still saying 'Windows is not checking your system for maintenance problems'. ?! Very fustrating! Any ideas if these shortcuts are backed up/moved elsewhere so i can easily find and restore them?

• Automatically create bug resolution task using the TFS 2010 API

  My customer requires bug resolution to be approved and tracked.  To minimize the overhead for developers I implemented a TFS 2010 server-side plug-in to automatically create a child resolution task for the bug when the “CCB” field is set to approved. The CCB field is a custom field.  I also added the story points field to the bug WIT for sizing purposes. Redundant tasks will not be created unless the bug title is changed or the prior task is closed. The program writes an audit trail to a log file visible in the TFS Admin Console Log view. • OSB and Ubuntu 10.04 - Too Many Open Files

  When installing the latest Oracle Service Bus (11gR1PS3) onto my Ubuntu 10.04 system, the Eclipse IDE was complaining about there being too many open files. The Oracle Service Bus and the Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse (aka OEPE) do make use of ALOT of files. By default, Ubuntu will restrict each user to 1024 open files. A much more realistic number for OSB development is 4096. Changing the file limit in Ubuntu is fairly simple (if arcane). You will need to modify two different files and then restart your server. First, you need to modify the limits.conf file as the root user. Open a terminal window and enter the following command: sudo gedit /etc/security/limits.conf Add the following 2 lines to the file. The asterisk simply means that the rule will apply to all users. * soft nofile 4096 * hard nofile 4096 Save your changes and close gedit. The second file to change is the common-session file. Use the following command: sudo gedit /etc/pam.d/common-session Add the following line: session required pam_limits.so Save the file and exit gedit. Restart your machine. You shouldn't have any more problems with too many open files anymore.

• MinGW MSYS ssh error: Could not create directory '/home/<username>/.ssh'

  I have just installed a fresh MinGW installation on Windows 7 64bit using the Graphical User Interface Installer (the recommended approach) following the instructions given here and keeping the default options (i.e. installation in C:\MinGW) - hopefully without missing any steps or messing things up in any way. However, when running the ssh command, I get the following error: C:\Users\Diablossh username@host Could not create directory '/home/username/.ssh'. The authenticity of host 'username@host (host ip here)' can't be established. RSA key fingerprint is (fingerprint here). Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? yes Failed to add the host to the list of known hosts (/home/username/.ssh/known_hosts). So, I basically have to confirm the connection every time. Why does this happen and how do I fix it?

• Bring OS X Error Message window to the front

  In OS X, when an application crashes, a window with an error report will appear. That window is by default unreachable by Command+Tab nor does it appear in the Dock. Of course, if by error or on purpose one clicks another window, the error report will go to the background and hide behind the other windows. This is really annoying, because in order to see it, I will have to use Exposé and scan through 20+ Windows in order to find it. (Not to say, that I don’t like Exposé anymore since Snow Leopard made the window sizes all confusingly equal.) Any ideas on how to make the error reports Command+Tabbable?

• how to create iso dvd image for use with mac/osx "Disk Utility"?

  This seemed way easier on my pc. I would just pop a blank dvd in the drive, it asked what I wanted to do with it, to which I would respond, "burn dvd with nero" (paraphrasing), then I would pick "new" and just drag and drop the folders in there. Mac appears to have "Disk Utility" which just requires that I 'choose an image' but then doesn't bother to detail - how to do this - what the options mean e.g. format "mac OS extended (journaled)" is that ever going to be readable on a non mac machine? I want to create an ISO standard dvd as per the 'default' you'd get on nero. All the stuff on the web points to doing things with 'terminal' (the whole point of buying a mac was to get away from command line jiggery pokery - I'm trying to burn some photos not land a friggin lunar module here!) Please, if you can just provide some simple instructions on what I need to achive this I'd be extremely grateful. Ta muchley in advance.

• Admin mode on Procurve Switches

  Not being a network expert, I spent some time configuring my network, until I found my mistake: On my HP ProCurve Switch 1810G, I thought that "Admin mode" means whether the administrative interface can be accessed from this port. Well, it means whether the port is enabled or not. Extract from the help function: Admin Mode - Select to enable the port-control administration state. Click to enable and have the port participate in the network.(Default : Enabled ) Well, of course I didn't read the help, because I didn't doubt it's for the adminsitrative interface and suspected an error somewhere else. Anyway, I am wondering if that is a commonly used term for enabling/disabling ports or if HP just wanted to make my life harder? I can't understand why this option isn't just called "Enable port"!?   I want to make an actual compact cassette mix-tape as a gift for someone. I use iTunes to manage all of my music. So a few questions: If I gather a bunch of songs on a playlist for sides A/B of the tape, how can I ensure that the volume for all songs is the same as it plays on the tape? I was thinking of finding an old compact casette recorder and putting the single line sterio output of my Mac to the casette's microphone input. Is that a good way to record onto the actual tape? How long is each side of a compact tape? Is there a default speed the tape plays at? Let's say I want to mesh some songs together so that they will completely fill up one side of a tape (cut off 10 seconds off the end of one song or the beginning of another song), what's the best way to do that?

• PowerBroker (Likewise-Open) + Ubuntu 13.04 -> 13.10 Upgrade

  I just upgraded Ubuntu from 13.04 to 13.10, and now I can't log into Active Directory; my system is integrated using PowerBroker Identity Services (PBIS), which used to be called Likewise-Open. So far I have identified the following symptoms: I am able to log in with my credentials via ssh. The screen goes black when attempting log into my account via the login screen. I've tried leaving the domain, purging PBIS, and re-installing the latest version of PBIS. I've been trying the troubleshooting section I found here, but I haven't had any success. • Installing the AMD Proprietary Drivers broke my 12.10 desktop

  I decided to download and install the AMD Legacy Catalyst driver 12.6 from AMD's website. I ran the .run file and the GUI below in the second image appeared and I install it that way. On reboot, I saw the below first image, though I managed to open Firefox by Open the pictures by right click Open As. No windows, buttons, or launcher / environment. It took some time but I figured out how to remove the driver and got back to normal on the default open source drivers I had before. Purged the old drivers and reconfigured xorg to make sure. How should I be going about installing the AMD made drivers? Is it even compatible with Ubuntu 12.10 yet? And if so would I even need it for 3D heavy applications like Team Fortress 2, or other game applications? I didn't install Ubuntu just for Steam, I've been using it on and off for a few years. Valve has mentioned that they are working on graphics drivers with NVIDA, AMD, and Intel. Nvidia released their new driver on Steam Linux beta release. Is AMD supposed to also have a new driver coming out soon? I'm using an ATi Radeon HD 4850 1GB.   I just turned on Bitlocker on my development laptop for the first time (Windows 8.1) and encrypted both SSDs. When I started SQL Server Enterprise Manager, it could not connect to the default instance on the local machine. Does this not work? I have been googling for an hour and only found anecdotal evidence, but no solid information. Just to clarify - I am not interested in encrypting a database. I want to run SQL Server on a machine with an encrypted drive.

  Where are these system proxy settings? I noticed my connection has been slow for a while, then I checked the connection settings and was surprised there were set a proxy, but I cant see what exactly it is using. Where can I check which IP it was routing the connection for me ? Here is what I saw from Firefox (12.0) options: http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/4370/sysproxy.png As far as I can remember, it has always been "no proxy" and not "system proxy". Unless new firefox version has set that "system proxy" to default?

I like these buttons and can use the fn button to take advantage of application Function keys when working with certain applications. Some service-type, background applications also have useful keyboard shortcuts. I tend to forget which keys are active at the moment and sometimes launch the wrong processes. Is there an application or operating system, native way of identifying all of the currently available keyboard shortcuts?

  I am trying to install Windows 8 Transformation Pack v4.0 on my Sony Vaio laptop with the following options: When I run (as administrator) the setup file, it starts to install but gives the following error at some point: The file 'C:\Windows\Fonts\segoui.ttf' could not be opened. Please check that your disk is not full and that you have access to the destination directory. Since I run the installer as administrator, this error message seems strange to me. Segoe UI font is also installed on my PC. When I try to install with default system fonts (without Segoe UI), it gives the same error again: What should I do to solve this problem?

  i'm trying to figure out why my apache2 reverse proxy doesn't work... hope someone can clarify. i'm using an apache server as a gateway with proxy pass: 10.184.1.2 is the IP. these are PP instructions i inserted in the 000-default config file. • Terminal command to send data (plain text string) to a port at a remote computer.

  I am trying to send data (plain text string) to a port at a remote computer using terminal utility. The string would be used to trigger something on the remote computer running a program that would listen to that specific port. I used netcat command and tried a few combination of the following but can't seem to get the parameter right. Can someone point me out where am I doing wrong? eddy-2:Desktop eddy$ nc IPADDRESS PORT woc.txt eddy-2:Desktop eddy$ nc IPADDRESS PORT < woc.txt P.S: woc.txt contains plain text string of the said command. Edit: I am trying to send a string from OSX to Windows XP where the specific port is open by default.

• Recover from running "route -f"

  I was trying to capture localhost traffic with Ethereal, which doesn't work without re-routing localhost traffic to your router gateway. I didn't get the route command quite right, and messed up my routing table. I typed route -f to clear the routing table and rebooted, but when I finished rebooting, the routing table wasn't restored to its original state. I didn't use the -p parameter, so none of my changes should have persisted after a reboot. What can I do to restore the routing table to its default routes?
