• Tips and tricks to make NX server more stable

  My shop has been using the FreeNX server on Fedora 11 for a while now and mostly getting good results, especially with performance, but we have some annoying problems with client connections. There are two main issues: Client sessions sometimes freeze after a long time (seems to be at least 2 hours of having the session active) We often have to make multiple attempts to start a new client session, especially if a previous session was suspended rather than terminated. In qwuite a few cases, we've had to restart the NX server to get around this. Our NX server configuration is the default except that we've enabled logging level 7 to /var/log/nxserver.log, and set the font server to "unix:/7100" so that it uses xfs. Does anyone have any ideas for making things more stable ?

• Use Those Schemas, People!

  Database Schemas are just containers – they aren’t users or anything else – think of a sub-directory on the hard drive. In early versions of SQL Server we “hid” schemas, placing all objects under “dbo”, which gave the erroneous perception that Schemas are users. In SQL Server 2005, we “un-hid” or re-introduced schemas within the database. Users can have a default schema (a place where their new objects go), you can add new schemas and transfer objects between them, and they have many other benefits. But I still see a lot of applications, developed by shops I know as well as vendors, that don’t make use of a Schema. Everything is piled under dbo. I completely understand this – since permissions can be granted to a schema, they feel a lot like a user, so it’s just easier not to worry about both users and schemas when you create a database. But if you’ll use them properly you can make your application more understandable and portable. • Belking Wireless Router unable to connect to internet although wireless connection is working

  I have a Belkin Basic N150 Wireless router. I'm trying to set up wireless connection using the wired ports my university has provided in my hostel room. Usually, when I connect my laptop using a LAN wire through the port, my settings are like IP: 10.5.130.X Subnet Mask: 255.255.254.0 Default Gateway: 10.5.130.250 DNS Server: 10.200.1.11 and I'm able to connect to the internet. Now instead of connecting my laptop directly, I've connected the lan wire to the Belkin Wireless Router, set the router as "Use as an Access Point" and in the IP field, I've put up 10.5.130.1. Now I've set the IP of my system manually to 10.5.130.3. I'm able to connect to the wi-fi but I'm still not able to connect to the internet. What am I missing?

The first one has the most momentum, the second one comes by default with RH subscriptions and the last one is very expensive and has a very good reputation ;-) For storage: - You can replicate LUN's using software raid / md device - You can use the network using DRBD replication, which offers a bit more flexibility - You can use Veritas Storage Foundation technology to talk to your SANs replication technology. Anyone has any recommandations or experience with these technologies?

• PECL on Mac OS X 10.6

  I'm having trouble finding PECL on a Mac OS X 10.6 machine. I'm using the default install of Apache and PHP for development and have installed MongoDB, however I can't work with Mongo/PHP without the mongo PECL extension. Is there a copy of PECL on a Mac or will I have to install it? If so, where is it? If not, do you know of a good tutorial for getting it up-and-running? I've tried the obvious stuff: sudo find / -name "pecl" -print returns nothing Thanks very much

• Ubuntu 9.10 X Stuck in restart loop - I think...

  Trying out Ubuntu, installation went fine - upgraded to the proprietary nVidia drivers but on restart I get a login prompt and the screen is flashing really fast almost as if Xserver is trying to start and failing, I can type when the screen isn't in a "flash" as it were and it's so fast and random it's hard to even type a login name without it missing some characters - this makes typing a password (i.e. not being able to see which characters made it or not) very hard. I can log back into the live cd and alter my settings - but I can't even find out how to stop X stop starting on boot; Looks like they've moved everything around :-p I'd like to: Stop X from crashing and going insane (if it is actually Xserver) Know how to stop X from starting on bootup, Looks like interactive boot is also off by default now Update: A temporary work around seems to be enabling ssh and just connecting to the box over the network - ssh seems to work fine :-p Cheers, Chris

• Unity not running on startup

  OK, so Firefox was running extremely slow, I ran it in safe mode and still slow, so I rebooted and when she came back on, I wasn't at the regular Unity login, it was like a classic Windows login (where I had to enter my username and password manually, not a list of users). I logged in and only my desktop was visible (with icons and my wallpaper). Nothing else. I was able to open a terminal with Ctrl+ Alt+T and typed... sudo unity ...which got it up (albeit with the default icons on the launcher ex. I had unlocked Libre Office and it was back). In "Startup Applications..." there was absolutely nothing at all... This happens every time I reboot. Thunderbird de-synced from my Gmail but Pidgin is still connected. When I do Ctrl+Alt+L it locks the screen as normal, but I have no option to switch user. I have the only account on this computer but I cannot access the main login screen to get to my Guest account. I'm not very Ubuntu-savy, but it's pretty clear that I'm starting in some sort of safemode. I am on a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS (just installed it last night).

• Any Practical Alternative to the Signals + Slots model for GUI Programming?

  The majority of GUI Toolkits nowadays use the Signals + Slots model. It was Qt and GTK+, if I am not wrong, who pioneered it. You know, the widgets or graphical objects (sometimes even ones that aren't displayed) send signals to the main-loop handler. The main-loop handler then calls the events, callbacks or slots assigned for that widget / graphical object. There are usually default (and in most cases virtual) event-handlers already provided by the toolkit for handling all pre-defined signals, therefore, unlike previous designs where the developer had to write the entire main-loop and handler for each and every message himself (think WINAPI), the developer only has to worry about the signals he needs to implement new functionality on. Now this design is being used in most modern toolkits as far as I know. There are Qt, GTK+, FLTK etc. There is Java Swing. C# even has a language feature for it ( events and delegates ), and Windows Forms has been developed on this design. In fact, over the last decade, this design for GUI programming has become a kind of an unwritten standard. Since it increases productivity and provides greater abstraction. However, my question is: Is there any alternative design, that is parallel or practical for modern GUI programming? i.e Is the Signals + Slots design, the only practical one in town? Is it feasible to do GUI Programming with any other design? Are any modern (preferably successful and popular) GUI toolkits built on an alternative design?

• HP CM2320 Printer crashes windows 2003 spooler in TS/Citrix

  Hello, I'm having a very annoying issue with an HP printer (CM2320): all of a sudden, any user who has that printer installed locally as default printer would crash any Windows 2003 terminal services or Citrix server (XenApp PS 4.5) as soon as he connect, causing the session to hang and other users to be unable to connect to the server. To restore functionality, an administrator has to connect to the server's console session and acknowledge the error message about spoolsv.exe having crashed with an AV. I tried downloading the latest drivers from HP (an adventure worthy of Lara Croft in itself) and install it on all servers but that didn't seem to have helped the situation: the spooler is still crashing. Anyone has a suggestion about what I could do about this ?

• Setting up DKIM for multiple domains on same host

  I have DKIM set up for one domain and it works properly. I am trying, though, to set it up for another domain name on the same machine. In short, I am sending registration and password recovery emails from one domain and everything else from the other domain. Both domains map to the same host. Setting up domainkeys in this manner was no problem - adding another "DAEMON_OPTS=" line in /etc/default/dk-filter was the solution. This is not the case for DKIM, though, since it stores this information in a configuration file (/etc/dkim-filter.conf) that is formatted in a completely different manner. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

• Semantic is consuming all CPU, causing emacs to hang

  I upgraded to emacs 23.2.1 on Windows 7, not long ago. Since then I've been unable to use Semantic. As soon as I start it, the cpu goes to MAX . (actually, Windows reports it at 50%, but this is a dual core machine, so emacs is effectively consuming 100% of a core). Emacs becomes non-responsive. Is there a particular combination of versions of semantic and emacs I that is unsafe to use together? how would I debug this spin/hang? I've seen other suggestions to change the semantic-idle-scheduler-idle-time, from its default 2 to something very large. I tried that, but got the same results.

  I have a Java application server (GlassFish, indeed, but the problem is the same for any other application server, I guess), running on port 8080. And I have IIS 7.5 listening on port 80 as by default configuration. I want to avoid people typing the port because it's unprofessional. So I want that when somebody types http://myserver the traffic is directed to IIS. And this is how it already works now. But I also want that when somebody types http://myserver/java the traffic is directed to port 8080 and consequently my GlassFish splash screen is displayed. If I have deployed an application on GlassFish under context root app1, typing http://myserver/java/app1 should access the application. How can I do this? I have tried with adding some rules with the URL Rewrite utility from IIS7.5 UI, but this shows the port after the rule has rewritten the url, and I want to avoid it.

• How can I upgrade my server's kernel without rebooting?

  This is a loaded question because I'm already aware of, and am very interested in ksplice. The problem is that since they were bought by Oracle, they have been forced to pull numerous server distributions from the offerings. The answer isn't as simple as it once was. I noticed a question on Unix.SE that states: You can build your own ksplice patches to dynamically load into your own kernel Great! But how?! I've installed the free ksplice package in the repo on my desktop (not ksplice-uptrack which is non-free) and now want to generate and apply updates. What's the process? Are there any scripts out there to automate the process? Moreover, if all the machinery required for rebootless upgrades is sitting there in the kernel (and ksplice package), why on earth aren't we taking advantage of it by default? Note 1: I am happy for a solution beside ksplice but it has to deliver the same thing: rolling updates to the kernel that can be applied without rebooting the server. Note 2: I'll say it again; the main ksplice "service" does not support Ubuntu Server. It used to but it doesn't any more. When I talk about wanting to use ksplice, I'm talking about the open source tools in the ksplice package. Any answer that talks about ksplice-uptrack is probably not what I'm after as this is the part that integrates directly with aforementioned "service".

  In a nutshell, i have a VM that ran out of space. I increased the size of the VM's harddrive to be 4 times bigger but the OS partition is still only using 1x the space. I need to change the LVM partition to take up the extra 4x space but I don't know how to extend the LVM partition. (NOTE: To make the screenshots given below I had to boot from a live-cd for gnome-partition-manager (aka gparted). Very unfortunately gparted is only able to "detect LVM" and can't do any LVM operations.) Here is what "gparted" shows. Please notice that the "resize" option is not available: The Problem: I can't find good directions<1 on how to grow the LVM partition via GUI or command-line!   I just upgraded memory to 4GB for Sony Vaio VGN-SZ460N laptop and trying to install Windows 7 x64. All works fine with default drivers, except video - I am not able to set resolution more than 1024x768. Technical specification says that this model is using: Chipset : Intel® 945GM Processor : NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7400 notebook graphics processing unit (GPU) and Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 I was trying to use Intel 945GM driver, for Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and get error: This computer does not meet the mininum requirements for installing the software Also, I was trying to download nVidia GeForce Go 7400 x64 but it says that there is no compatible hardware. Actually, it has disclaimer that those drivers doesn't work for Sony vaio and recomendation to use OEM website. Sony website has only 32-bit version of driver which says that it cannot be installed and x64 should be used... Any ideas?

With the patch you can now set the default state of bookmarks (if you create them) in your PDF outputs. If your users prefer to see them all collapsed to the base level or may be collapsed to the second level to ease navigation; whatever they need. Its another opportunity for you to look like a star! You of course need to start with a table of contents; then add the convert|copy to bookmarks command. You can then add the new collapse command to set the appropriate level in the bookmarks. <?copy-to-bookmark:?> <?collapse-bookmark:show;2?> <<< Table of Contents >>> <?end convert-to-bookmark?> The command allows you to expand or collapse the bookmarks as you need.
