  • Incorrect usage of UPDATE and ORDER BY

    I have written some code to update certain rows of a table with a decreasing sequence of numbers. To select the correct rows I have to JOIN two tables. The last row in the table needs to have a value of 0, the second last -1 and so on. To achieve this I use ORDER BY DESC. Unfortunately my code brings up the following error: Incorrect usage of UPDATE and ORDER BY My reading suggests that I can't use UPDATE, JOIN and ORDER BY together. I've read that maybe subqueries might help? I don't really have any idea how to change my code to do this.     I've been trying to get my query to work for some time it runs but doesn't insert anything nor does it return any errors. The database connection is open and is successfuly connection. Sometimes I was doing some select SQL command at the backend, but when I typed in this command to show all records from table Users: select * from Users; The records were printed as ???? | ??? ??? ??? |. I don't want to make any permanent changes to the charset in the database, so, how is it possible to temporarily displayed a few records as utf8 when needed?

  • mysql_affected_rows() always returns 1 even though no row was updated.

    What I am trying to do is: (programmatically) Update status where id is something, if no rows where updated, give error: we cannot find the record with id something, otherwise give message success. Here I am using mysql_affected_rows() to know if a row was updated or not, but it always return 1, so the user gets a success message, even though there was no row updated. Can anyone tell me what could it be?

Now if I or my clent upload the CMS in any server how will it work. because there is no database in that server. And in my php code I wrote to create database. Like this: Packages table id, name, type(enum{general,special}) 1, name1, general 2, name2, special Items table id, package_id, location 1, 1, America 2, 1, Africa 3, 1, Europe 4, 2, Europe Question: I want to find all 'special' packages belonging to a location and if no special package is found then it should return 'general' packages belonging to same location.     I don't know the best way to title this question but am trying to accomplish the following goal: When a client logs into their profile, they are presented with a link to download data from an existing database in CSV format. The process works, however, I would like for this data to be 'fresh' each time they click the link so my plan was - once a user has clicked the link and downloaded the CSV file, the database table would 'erase' all of its data and start fresh (be empty) until the next set of data populated it.
