• Install Glibc2 using Yum

  I'm trying to install glibc2 version 2.11 that's needed for openoffice 3.4 https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=119393 but i can't seem to find the dependency with yum. • Troubleshooting Amazon EC2 reboot

  We've had a server (CentOS) running in EC2 for a few months. It had been going pretty smoothly until today when we got an alarm that the server was unavailable (HTTP service couldn't be reached). So I tried SSHing into the box but that timed out as well. I logged into the EC2 console and it said the instance was running and there wasn't anything in the system log. One odd thing I noticed is that even though we have an Elastic IP attached to it (which shows in the Elastic IP management area), the instance detail is not showing that there is an EIP associated with the instance. I looked through the message log and the last thing I see around the time we got our alert was the dhclient renewed the lease. I'm guessing there may have been some sort of issue with the networking. How might I check if that was the problem, or if there were any other issues that may have caused our instance to stop responding?

However, these tend to deal with a specific case, and once whatever mistake the OP made is found out, the discussion is over. If you don't happen to have made the same error, such a discussion isn't very useful. So I thought it would be more helpful to have a general protocol for resolving all hosts-related issues that would cover all cases.

I added nameserver settings for this domain, and mx records. n1.mydomain.com ns2.mydomain.com etc. Now i want to add more domain with websites to my server. Now what is the best way to do this. Should i add the domain, and use the mydomain.com nameserver settings. Shoudl i add the domain and create his own nameserver. • Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2010 Public Folder Replication

  We have 2 exchange servers in our org. MX1 and MX2. I'm trying to replicate all MX1 public folders to MX2. I've setup replication for all the toplevel folders to include the MX2 server. However no public folders are being replicated. The event log does not show any errors. I've set the diagnostic level for all public folder diagnostics to Highest using get-eventloglevel "MSExchangeIS\9001 Public\*" | set-eventloglevel -Level Expert However besides a 3092 event ID (type: 0x2) generated on MX1 (the source server), there are no events being generated that would notify me of any issues. Some technical details. MX1 is Windows 2008 Standard, MX2 is Windows 2008 Enterprise (eval mode right now).

• NLB NIC w/ Static IP permanently "Acquiring Network Address" after adding more IP's to the cluster

  We have a 2 node NLB cluster. I recently added more IP's to the cluster range, after which point, the NLB NIC's on both of my nodes ended up in a permanent "acquiring network address" state. The cluster appears to be functioning despite this hang in acquiring an address. We've also rebooted the machines, and these NIC's remain in this state "acquiring network address" even after reboot, which I find troubling. Questions: Does anyone know where I can find documentation on how NLB binds to a NIC? (are there dll's involved, drivers, etc.) Does anyone know of any programs that have known incompatability issues with NLB? We have an application server installed on these NLB nodes (AOL Server) that interacts with the NIC's as well, and I suspect that it might be causing this issue. Before I go directly to Microsoft, I want to gather as much information as possible about the issue. Any help / guidance would be much appreciated...

It has a sequential write speed of ~140MB/s measured with dd bs=1M count=512 if=/dev/zero of=test conv=fdatasync Elevator set to cfq Guest Debian 6.0 (squeeze) Uses LVM as storage. Drivers are virtio and cache='none' Sequential write speed is considerably slower with only 25-50MB/s Elevator set to noop I'm kind of running out of ideas for further tweaks but I'm sure that I/O speed should be much faster because many people are reporting almost native performance with lvm.

  I am trying to run net time on a Windows 7 box with an account that is part of the Administrators group. When I run the command net time from an elevated command prompt I get the following error: System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied. Why is this happening? I've looked at this Microsoft Knowledge Base article and have gone through the steps. Both the computer and the DC are connected to the same NTP server and I've verified they're synced I'm working on a local account so there should be no permissions issues There is no local firewall running

• How to move linux executables to a ramdisk?

  i've made a ramdisk this way: mkdir -p /media/ramdisk mount -t tmpfs -o size=512M tmpfs /media/ramdisk/ The reason for this is because i run a lot of node.js scripts and their execution time is very small, but i suspect that the time overhead is because it reloads the node.js executable from disk and destroys it on each subsecuent run. So i think this might be the solution to gain a bit, if not much, performance. How can i move a program like node to the ramdisk and run it from there? The idea is to have a startup script that creates the ramdisk and puts the node files inside of it. Note that i'm currently using fedora 16 for what's it's worth. Thanks in advance.

• Best way to automatically synchronize files between Linux and Windows

  My first choice was rsync but it caused some issues and is too manual. My second choice, currently under evaluation is Unison. Are there any other good options for bi-directional auto-syncing? The synching tool cannot add it's own files to the directories to be synched. Which removes CVS/SVN as a choice. Plus they are too manual. The requirements are user-level program on both sides, no root account access available. Only scanning on linux. On windows it could be a virtual drive/path. Very fast and efficient like rsync. Some other requirements include: machines are not on the same network, files cannot fall into the wrong hands, nor can they be handled by 3rd parties, this pretty much excludes all online storage sites.

• Installing multiple php versions plus extensions on freebsd

  I'm a currently learning how to work with freebsd. Lately I have been trying to run multiple php versions along with their respective packages. However, I seem to be running into issues while making installations. The default location for my php installation is /usr/local/etc/, however I want to be able to install php5.2, php5.3 and php5.4 in /usr/local/etc/php52, /usr/local/etc/php53 and /usr/local/etc/php54 respectively. Using ports I simply achieved this by doing cd /usr/ports/lang/php5x && make PREFIX="/usr/local/etc/php5x" install clean. The problem now is: How do I do the same for extensions of all my PHP versions? When I try installing php-extensions like so: cd /usr/ports/lang/php5x-extension && make PREFIX="/usr/local/etc/php5x/lib/php" install clean, I get this error ... ===> PHPizing for php53-bcmath-5.3.17 env: /usr/local/bin/phpize: No such file or directory *** Error code 127 Stop in /usr/ports/math/php53-bcmath. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/lang/php53-extensions. My PHPize is located in /usr/local/etc/php5x/bin/phpize So how do I get make or whatever to look for phpize in the right path? Is there a cleaner, may be simpler way of maintaining multiple php installations? I need to achieve this because of compatibility issues from some legacy code that runs on 5.2 and breaks on 5.3.   I am going to build a full height server machine to be used for SQL Server 2008 64bit. I have $400 to spend for a CPU. Which CPU should I get among i5, i7, Xeon and Phenom in terms of performance. There are so many options and I am out of touch with the latest stuff. All I know I want something fast and works with DDR3 fast memory and works with some kind of fast system bus. I don't care about overclocking, 3D & gfx benchmarks. The machine is not used for games and gfx apps. Any recommendations?

• How safe is it to run CHKDSK on an SSD?

  I recently saw Windows 7 pop up a warning or two that I should run chkdsk on my laptop. My laptop came with an SSD and I'm not sure if there are any negative implications to running chkdsk on such a drive. Are there any potential issues with reporting "bad sectors" on the drive? I would imagine that the physical concept of sectors is completely different between a platter and a microchip. I don't think my SSD supports TRIM. It's about 14 months old and a quick web search seems to hint that it doesn't (though it's nearly impossible to find out this info for sure!). I'm also not sure if TRIM is even relevant here since there shouldn't be much in the way of deletes. So, how safe is it to run chkdsk on my SSD drive? The model of SSD that I have is reported as "Samsung SSD PB22-JS3 2.5".

  I'm building a iscsi storage system for hosting about ~500 Vmware vm running concurrently. And I have a disk array with 15 disks, I only need moderate write performance but preferably not SPOFed. so, that leaves me with RAID1 / RAID10 , I have couple choices: 1) 3x LUN 4disk RAID10 + 3 hot-swap 2) 1x LUN 14disk RAID10 + 1 hot-swap 3) 7x LUN 2disk RAID1 + 1 host-swap Which way is better? Is there a real problem running 500 vms on single LUN? and would it be better to resort to 7 LUns so each VM is better isolated with each other?

• IMAP email migration from Apptix to Office 365

  I am having issues setting up a migration from Apptix to Office 365 of 41 users in my company. I've found a couple guides on the Microsoft website about how to do it (Thank you Google) but I keep coming up with problems. I am trying to set up a mailbox migration through IMAP to get all of my users' emails over to Office 365 before we make the transition over from Apptix. One of the forums suggested using IMAP, since a CSV file can be uploaded to Office 365 and it will check for incoming mail for each user every 24 hours. My problem is that when I do this, I just get errors. • Mounting NFS share between OSX and Centos VM

  I'm having issues mounting an NFS share I've made on my Mac host (server) from a Centos VM (client). I'm getting a permission denied error. I have this line in /etc/exports on server: /Users/adam/Sites/ 192.168.1.223(rw) and in /etc/fstab on client: 192.168.1.186:/Users/adam/Sites/ /home/adam/Sites/ nfs rw 0 0 I'm sure this is a simple configuration issue, but I've never set up NFS properly before. • Why Does My Website Redirect me to my localhost?

  Alight, my website has some issues that I'm not sure what's causing them. Visit this page http://online-file-sharing.net/tos.html and click one of the bottom footer links... it redirects you to your localhost in the address bar. I have no idea why it does this. I'm hosting this website on my own server, which is this computer, and using Xampp. If this information helps. Anyways any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm also using DYNDNS as my nameservers.

• Running a powershell script at startup

  I am writing a script to remove a computer from the domain, rename it, then add it back. It works fine when I set the trigger to AtLogOn but when I switch to AtStartUp I run into some issues. I get this error when it restarts to run the first scheduled task: 0x8007051F: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. I suspect the script tries to run with no network connection set up so I tested using the RandomDelay parameter, and it worked like its suppose to. I cant rely on a random delay so I am looking for an alternative. Is there a way to test the network status before the script begins or a way to delay the script a specific amount of time? I am using Register-ScheduledJob provided by Powershell 3.0 Thanks in advance

• ESX hosts lose connectivity with iSCSI SAN LUNs

  I've been experiencing this issue for a couple of months now where my ESX hosts lose connectivity with my iSCSI SAN vmfs volumes. As a results the ESX hosts enter a nonresponsive mode the associated VMs disconnect and the only remedy is to reboot the host. This issue happens randomly . I have escalated this issue with VMWare but I haven't had any solution to the issue yet. I see no errors on my switches and there are no hardware issues as well. My SAN infrastucture is solid and there are 2 paths for every vmfs volume. Did anybody else experienced a similar issue? Themis

• What is meant by "streaming data access" in HDFS?

  According to the HDFS Architecture page HDFS was designed for "streaming data access". I'm not sure what that means exactly, but would guess it means an operation like seek is either disabled or has sub-optimal performance. Would this be correct? I'm interested in using HDFS for storing audio/video files that need to be streamed to browser clients. Most of the streams will be start to finish, but some could have a high number of seeks. Maybe there is another file system that could do this better?

• Difference between RPM (yum) and apt-get

  Functional difference between the two? Packages different style or what? I'm dipping my toe in the server pool and playing with an Ubuntu install right now, which is apt-get. I'm also considering FreeBSD and Debian if I do decide to start running my own VPS. So far things have been very easy, sudo apt-get install apache2 and the like with no issues at all. I'd like to know if there is a different learning curve to yum or variants.

• Windows Media Center says "Searching for tuners" when I try to play live TV

  After upgrading from Windows 8 Pro with Media Center to the 8.1 preview, I need some help in being able to watch live TV again. When I try to now, it says Please Wait. Searching for tuners. I tried reinstalling the software for the Hauppauge WinTV DCR-2650 TV tuner, and upgrading the firmware for both the tuner and the Cisco STA-1520 tuning adapter. I also tried swapping around the USB ports, cold-booting the devices, and running the Set Up TV Signal setting in WMC, but that says The TV signal cannot be configured because a TV tuner was not detected. Both devices look fine in Device Manager, reporting the "This device is working properly" status. I'm not sure if this is related, but I did have some network connectivity issues immediately after upgrading to Windows 8.1 where my either my subnet mask or default gateway was missing, and since the TV tuner shows up as a network device, I wonder if that might be related. However, I really don't know how those settings should look and Hyper-V sort of further complicates things with the virtual Ethernet adapters:

• Are Mac Minis suitable for a proper desktop computer?

  I've read about a lot of people using their Mac Minis as a file server, or media centre or something similar. Does the mini function alright as a standard desktop PC? The Mac will be used primarily for web development, that is, it will need to run Coda, Photoshop, possible Firefox and Safari at the same time. So it will need suitable performance. Or am I better off getting an iMac? I though the mini looked like a good option because: cheaper I already have a keyboard, mouse and 24" monitor I could use a KVM between the mini and PC Also, does the mini support multiple monitors?
