• Socket 1155 vs 2011 vs Haswell

  The title says it all. I am trying to decide between sockets and just cant pinpoint which to get based on pros and cons. The build this will go into will be my primary PC. It will be used for every day computing, coding, some multimedia and gaming. I have read that 1155 and 2011 will be dead within the new year and that Haswell will double the performance of Ivy Bridge. What is a general run down on the different sockets? Pros and Cons? More specifically what are the technical differences between the three?

• Http 400 'Bad Request' and win32status 1450 when larger messages are sended to a WCF service

  Hi all, we sometimes receive Http 400 bad request resultcodes when posting a large file (10mb) to a WCF service hosted in IIS 6. We can reproduce this using SOAP UI and it seems that it is unpredictable when this happens. In our WCF log the call is not received, so we believe that the request does not reach the ASP.NET nor WCF runtime. This happens on multiple websites on the same machine each having their own application pool. All IIS settings are default, only in ASP.NET and WCF we allow bigger readerQuota's etc.... The win32status that is logged in the IIS log is 1450 which we think means "error no system resources". So now the question: a) how can we solve this b) (when a is not applicable :) ) which performance counters or logs are usefull to learn more about this problem? greetings, Tim

• Keyboard automatically disconnects and reconnects

  The problem i am facing is the keyboard (USB) automatically disconnects when there is a fluctuation in the power supply to the speaker. The speaker and the pc both draw power from a apc ups. The fluctuation occurs because the speaker plug is not tightly connected to the ups power outlet. It is okay for normal work, but a accidental jerk causes the fluctuation. However after some amount of time (usually within 5 seconds) the keyboard automatically reconnects and windows plays the sound of hardware connected. This problem will also occur if I manually take out the speaker power cable from the ups power outlet. My question is whether the problem I am facing is due to electrical issues, or due to software problems. PC config: OS : Windows 7 Ultimate UPS : APC 600 VA PSU : Corsair TX 650 Speaker : Realtek

• New installation - Win 7 or directly Win 8?

  My laptop's hard disk is gone, so I need to re-install my Windows. Would it be a good idea to directly install Win8 (so actually the preview). Is there any known incompatibility with Win7 which would be a show stopper? I have a Dell XPS laptop, I do not expect any driver issues since the series is pretty much mainstream. Would the Win8 preview become Win8 RTM automatically by updates, or would I need to re-install Win8 RTM. This would be the no-go for me. The Win8 preview does not require a key, so I guess it becomes Win 8 RTM and then needs to be activated (which is what I want). Basically the idea is, I have to install windows anyway, so why not using the latest version?

• PostgreSQL server: 10k RPM SAS or Intel 520 Series SSD drives?

  We will be expanding the storage for a PostgreSQL server and one of the things we are considering is using SSDs (Intel 520 Series) instead of rotating discs (10k RPM). Price per GB is comparable and we expect improved performance, however we are concerned about longevity since our database usage pattern is quite write-heavy. We are also concerned about data corruption in case of power failure (due to SSDs write cache not flushing properly). We currently use RAID10 with 4 active HDDs (10k 146GB) and 1 spare configured in the controller. It's a HP DL380 G6 server with P410 Smart Array Controller and BBWC. What makes more sense: upgrading the drives to 300GB 10k RPM or using Intel 520 Series SSDs (240GB)?

• IIS - Forwarding requests to a folder to another port

  Context I currently installed Glassfish 3 in a server that currently holds ASP and PHP inside Internet Information Server 7 so we can start moving to a new system architecture (the information system is being remade). Obviously, Glassfish uses another port and without too much configuration (all I had to do is to install it) it worked. If I write www.domain.com:8080, the person will be redirected to the Glassfish server. Issue Obviously I don't want the person to write the port! I also believe it might also hold some security issues. Requirement I need the server to take an address of the form www.domain.com/gf or new.domain.com or something alike, and when it receives such a request, "redirect" (masking the URL) the user to the Glassfish website (www.domain.com:8080). • Would firewire networking be better than 100Megabit ethernet?

  My office network has a fully switched 1000Megabit ethernet network. I have an Apple iMac with a Gigabit NIC and FireWire, and a Compaq laptop with a 100Megabit NIC and a 4-pin FireWire interface. Accessing my office's shared drives using my laptop is (obviously) much loswer using my laptop than my iMac. Would I see a noticeible performance boost if I enabled Internet Connection Sharing on my iMac and shared the private ethernet network from my iMac with my laptop over FireWire? FireWire is 480Mbit/sec, right? So would I see roughly 4x speed improvement with such a setup?

• CentOS 5.4 NFS v4 client file permissions differ from original files & NFS Share file contents

  Having a strange problem with NFS share and file permissions on the 1 out of the 2 NFS clients, web1 has file permissions issues but web2 is fine. web1 and web2 are load balanced web servers. So questions are: how do I ensure NFS share file contents retain the same permissions for user/group as the original files on web1 server like they do on web2 server ? how do I reverse what I did on web1, i tried unmount command and said command not found ? Information: I'm using 3 dedicated server setup. All 3 servers CentOS 5.4 64bit based. servers are as follows: web1 - nfs client with file permissions issues web2 - nfs client file permissions are OKAY db1 - nfs share at /nfsroot web2 nfs client was setup by my web host, while web1 was setup by me. I did the following commands on web1 and it worked with updating db1 nfsroot share at /nfsroot/site_css with latest files on web1 but the file permissions don't stick even if i use tar with -p command to perserve file permissions ? cd /home/username/public_html/forums/script/ tar -zcp site_css/ > site_css.tar.gz mount -t nfs4 nfsshareipaddress:/site_css /home/username/public_html/forums/scripts/site_css/ -o rw,soft cd /home/username/public_html/forums/script/ tar -zxf site_css.tar.gz But checking on web1 file permissions no longer username user/group but owned by nobody ? but web2 file permissions correct ? This is only a problem for web1 while web2 is correct ? Looks like numeric ids aren't the same ? • Duplicate IP address detection with multiple NICs

  I am using arping -D to detect duplicate IP addresses within a network when setting up servers. (The network is controlled by someone else, and we have had many issues with IP allocation in the past.) It works fine as long as my host has a single NIC on a given VLAN, but when my host has more than one (I have one with 9 NICs on one VLAN and 1 on the other), arping -D always returns false collisions. The problem is that all 9 of my NICs respond to an ARP request for any of the IPs on those NICs. (These are real physical NICs, not aliases or anything.) I send out one ARP request packet, and get 9 ARP is-at ARP replies, one for each MAC address. I could implement my own solution by sniffing packets and checking for any replies with a MAC address other than the local NICs', but it seems like there ought to be an easier way.

This time I would like to make it possible to login directly as www-data (the default apache user on debian) to make things a bit cleaner. When they send me a document with mathematical equations in it, I can open it but not see the equations or the document loses formatting such as superscript for exponents. On this page of Known Issues in Word 2008, Microsoft says, Equations saved from Word 2007 for Windows do not appear in Word 2008 for Mac Equations saved in Word 2007 for Windows are not supported in Word 2008 for Mac. The equations will be preserved so that they display correctly in Word 2007, but will appear as placeholders in Word 2008. What can I do to collaborate with users of Word 2007 on mathematical documents?

  We need to build a new web server for our organization. We have around 100 hundred small traffic web sites, so our hardware requirements are not too tough. We run CentOS 6, Varnish+Apache, PHP, MySQL, Typo3 CMS for most of websites. Here's a hardware we want to buy: SuperMicro X9SCA-F-O (we need to have a remote management capability) (or better X9SCM-F?) Intel Xeon E3-1220 v2 2*4Gb DDR-III 1600MHz Kingston ECC (KVR16E11/4) (currently we have 4gb, and it feels like enough, so no reason for 16gb yet). Procase EB140-B-0 (1 unit) PSU 350W Procase MG1350, Active PFC We already have: Intel 335 120GB SSD (for OS, databases and important websites). 2*2tb WD Green RAID1 (for other data and backups). Does it look like a reasonable choice for our needs? Any issues with hardware compatibility? Any other notes?

• Server 2008 Hard Faults

  Hey all, plase bear with me as I haven't looked at a server in a very long time. The problem I am having is with a Windows 2008 Standard FE Service Pack 2 Intel Xeon X3430 @ 2.40 2.39 GHZ 4 GB Memory 64 Bit There seems to be no problems other than the physical memory peaking at 91%, always with over 100 Hard Faults Per Second. To my understanding hard faults should be fairly rare on a machine with. Are there any logs I can show you? Or investigate myself. The general performance of the machine is ok, i can access SBS2008 and change settings fairly smoothly without hangs etc. However, we connect to the server and do quite a bit of SQL via an application. For a record to retrieve say 20 rows, it can take 20+ seconds. • Looking for Inneroffice Access Tool, Workstation to Workstation

  This may be a simple question to answer, and I apologize if it's a duplicate. I looked through the suggestions and nothing jumped out at me as the right answer, so here goes: My office has several workstations, Macs and Windows boxes. We do have a firewall and a VPN solution, so getting in to the network from outside is easy. Likewise, we use GoToMeeting for demos and when we help our customers with their issues. But we have one workstation that has certain testing tools on it, and instead of walking across the office to this machine, I'd like to access it from my desk (and monitor it). I will need to open a command line and run commands. I could start a GoToMeeting and do it this way, but that seems overkill and clunky. Is there a simpler tool that allows pseudo-remote access within the same office/network for this kind of access?

• 64bit or 32bit Linux system?

  I have a server that has 4GB of RAM. On it, I have installation of 32bit Slackware Linux 12.1. Of course, it is not using all of 4GB of RAM. I'd soon like to increase the RAM to 8GB, and am looking for a way for the system to use it. The system is used as a database server and is under high load during the day. AFAICT, I have two options: stay with 32bit and rebuild the kernel and lose some performance. Or go with 64bit and reinstall everything. Looking at 64bit versions of Slackware, I could run -current or Slamd64. Now, on to the questions: Should I stay with 32bit or go with 64bit? If I go 64bit, should I use -current or Slamd64? P.S. I hope to get answers from someone actually using any of these configurations in production, not just copy/paste something I could find myself via Google.

• Running hardware with only 32bit drivers in 64bit windows

  Recently we had to upgrade a system to handle added HD IP cameras. This upgrade involved an entirely new computer build with the exception of a rather pricey Geovision DVR (PCI/GV1480 series). Apparently while these cards do support Windows 7, they do not support Windows 7 x64. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place here trying to figure out how we can remedy this, is there a virtualization solution that will allow devices with driver issues to passthru to the Guest OS? I was thinking XPMode may work for this solution however I am unsure if it runs 32bit or 64bit and if it'll allow driver-issue devices to pass to it. • Windows 2003 Enterprise Server becomes unresponsive occasionally

  We're experiencing issues with our Windows 2003 server, which runs SQL Server 2005 SP1. We notice that sometimes the entire server becomes unresponsive and I captured a screenshot of the task manager when this happened. I noticed that the processes are not displayed during this time and all of the memory information and handles disappear (as shown in the screenshot). Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong with this sytem? I'm planning to take it down over the weekend to run Memtest86. • CalDAV : request error problem

  We have an xserve which hosts our internal calendars through CalDAV. Personally have 4 calendars from the server set to show in my iCal. Frequently throughout the day at random moments I will get the below error. If I hit ignore, it will just continue to work without any issues. This is more of an annoyance then anything (the dock icon jumping all the time). I have full permission to read anything, so it is not an actual permission issue. Anyone know what might be the issue? • How to debug xsane "no devices available" error on 64 bit Ubuntu 10.04

  I have a Brother MFC-J615W printer/scanner and I wish to use the scanning feature across a network with a computer running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed the drivers from the Brother website and followed all of the instructions, and printing works fine, but xsane (installed from repositories) produces a popup with the message "no devices available" on startup. I recently had success with a similar approach when installing drivers for a Brother MFC-495CW on 32-bit Unbuntu 9.10, so I am aware of issues such as requiring root access if the driver permissions are not set correctly, but running xsane as root does not solve this problem. Are there any tools available to debug this problem further or does anyone have advice on how to proceed?

• Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P won't boot from USB drive with RAID enabled

  I've got a Windows 7 installation image on my USB hard drive, which is set up to be bootable. I know it works because I've used it on several computers, and it works on the computer I'm trying to install as long as the RAID controller is disabled. However, when I enable the RAID controller and attempt to boot from the USB driver, it hangs for 30-60 seconds and then gives me the "disk boot failure, insert system disk" error like it can't find any OS. Just for laughs, I disabled the RAID controller again and it booted fine. I'm having separate, unrelated issues burning a dvd with the ISO, so I would prefer to get this working.

• Public IP Routing over Private GRE tunnel

  I have a GRE tunnel configured between two linux boxes. The tunnel works fine. I can ping from each host the other private ip. Head privateip: 10.0.0.1 publicip: 8.8.8.8 Tail privateip: 10.0.0.2 publicip: 7.7.7.7 The public IP on Tail has the network block 9.9.9.0/23 statically routed over the 7.7.7.7 interface. The idea is to make the 9.9.9.0/23 ips work on servers on the 8.8.8.8 network. I configure the tail host to route the /23 block. I mounted a 9.9 IP on the head server. I can ping the 9.9 ip from the tail to the head. I can't ping the 9.9 ip from the public internet. I think I need to add some other routes because of gateway issues, but I can't seem to wrap my mind around it (not a router guy, just beating my way through something that I have never done before and vaguely understand) --danks

• Configuring home wireless network

  I'm new to setting up a home wireless network. I have Comcast tv/internet/phone service (modem included) as well as a wireless router. My question is pretty basic. How can I tell the performance of the following parts of the network? 1. incoming internet speed 2. speed of the modem 3. speed of the wireless router I basically want as fast an internet connection as possible, of course, but I'm not sure where to look for the bottleneck (and so, not sure where I can spend some money to speed things up). Right now I'm getting about 36 Mbps (as it shows in Windows). If I run an online speed test (xfinity has one) it shows Average download speed of 14.91 Mbps and Average upload speed of 5.72 Mbps.
