• More HTTP verbs with AS3?

  I'm developing a social game in Flash with a team of developers. Our server-side guy has developed a really slick RESTful API for the Flash client to talk to. A lot of the client-server interactions involve adding and removing objects from a persistent world, so the API makes extensive use of the PUT and DELETE verbs. The problem is, the URLRequest object in AS3 only supports the GET and POST verbs. We're on a strict schedule, and we'd really rather not have to rewrite the whole API to just use GET and POST. Has anyone come up with a good way to get Flash to send other verbs?

• is it a good idea to write tests for environments other than development?

  Let's say I have a (fairly typical) set of environments: PROD, UAT, QA, DEV. Is it a good idea to run your tests across all environments? Here's what I'm thinking of. I have a proc in SQL that my code depends on, I'll call it proc_getActiveCustomers. If that proc isn't present my app will go south real fast. So I write a test that checks for the existence of this proc in the database. Nothing new here. But when I then deploy my app to the QA environment, would I also want to have a test that checks that environment for the existence of proc_getActiveCustomers? I think this is a good idea but I've never heard much about testing in environments outside of development. Makes me wonder if there's some downside I'm not aware of. The direction that I'm going is to have a list of environments in code and then passing that environment into my unit test.

• Do I need the text "_size" in the my.cnf file for mysql 5.1?

  This is a pretty simple question about setting parameters in the my.cnf file for mysql 5.1. This page gives me the parameters I can tune: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/server-parameters.html and so I think I would need to write key_buffer_size = 256M But when I open my current my.cnf, it has the line: key_buffer = 16M My question is, do I need "key_buffer_size" or "key_buffer" or does it not matter which I use? And, how would I know if something in the my.cnf is incorrect? Where's the daemon start log file? I am running ubuntu; I think version 8.04 LTS

• Is it always bad idea to use inline css for used-once property?

  I have a table, with 10 columns. I want to control the width of each column. Each column is unique, right now I create an external CSS style for each column: div#my-page table#members th.name-col { width: 40px; } I know there is a best practice to avoid inline style. I do approve using external CSS for anything look'n'feel related: fonts, colors, images. But is it really better to use external CSS in this case? It does not incur extra maintenance cost. It is easier to produce. Cons I can think of: If you have separate designers and development team - using inline styles will force designers to modify content-file (aspx in my case). It might use more bandwidth. Anything else I've missed?

  Hello, I'm working with a small team of developers. My job is to convert a Make project (with Intellij Idea 9.0) into a Maven 2 project. The problem is : we spend a lot of time during the development. With Make, only one complete build was required and then any change did not consume a lot of time (almost instantaneously). On the other hand, with Maven 2, a little change takes a lot of time to run. Any solution ? Thanks.

• Jetty: Mount to a directory on a different host

  I'm looking to map to a directory on a different host using Jetty/Maven when working locally. I've found you can do this w/ Apache using mod_jk (JkMount/JkUnMount), but haven't figured it how to do the same on jetty. On our dev/q/live servers, we have Apache in front of JBoss and use mod_jk to do this. Locally, we're using jetty To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, this is how you would configure Apache to accomplish this: in httpd.conf: JkMount /images/* host2 JkMount /* host2 JkUnMount /images/* host1 workers.properties: worker.list=host2,host1 worker.host2.host=host-2.theDomain.com worker.host2.port=46654 worker.host1.host=host-1.theDomain.com worker.host1.port=46655 Is there a way to configure Jetty to do the same thing? • Limiting Subscriptions to be emailed using SSRS

  Currently, our system will do a "foreach" over all Subscriptions which are returned from the ListSubscriptions method of ReportingService and fire a Timed Subscription event so that they receive the report as an email. In our dev environment, I don't want every subscription of these reports to be sent out when we are testing. Is there a way I can create a new subscription with my own email address being used so that I receive the report? The temp subscription could then be deleted after sending. Any ideas on how to do this?

Some fictional, though not by much, examples of situations: Clients who are not familiar with using the Internet, and insist on features that are not even remotely feasible (ex. time travel) Clients who are unable to express accurately what they're looking for (ex. "I know that's what I said and signed off on, but it's not what I meant") Clients who refuse to attend meetings or review sessions to answer questions or define requirements (which makes any agile development impossible) For the most part, I'm trying to find best practices for how to handle these kinds of things on a team-building level. • How to prevent negative number in Mysql

  Hello guys.. I have data which is starting from 0 in my database. My php will add 1 or -1 to the data depending on the user's input. My problem is that if data is 0 and a user try to subtract 1. The data become 4294967295 which is the maximum value of INT data type. Are there anyways to make the data stays in 0 even when the user asks for -1? • can I debug my web project and wcf project on same vs 2008 instance ?

  I have two projects in my solution   1- asp.net web project.   2- wcf serivce project.   3- other common projects between two listed above Current on the local dev machine I have to run two visual studio instance to run both projects in debug mode. That makes the system run out of resources as these projects share some other project in the soultion which are heavy in files. Is there a way i can hookup the wcf project on a sinlge visual stodio instance and also be able to debug my asp.net web project. ? I do not want to combine the web and wcf project in to one.   Hi everyone, When trying memcache:get, I'll get the following error message back: Message: Memcache::get() [memcache.get]: Server localhost (tcp 11211) failed with: Failed reading line from stream (0) I run a Windows 32bit test environment (XP) and here's how my code looks: function getMulti(array $keys) { $items = $this->memcache->get($keys); return $items; } My memcache servers are two local computers in the LAN that my dev. environment is connected to. Sure, I can turn the error logging off or just put an @ before the get function call, but that doesnt solve this issue. What can I do? Thanks a lot!

• SQL Server 2005: When clicking "Add" database I keep getting 'verify that the path or file exists'

  When I right click on "databases" in Sql Server 2005 Management Studio and then Attach... Add I get the following error: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\SQL Server Management Studio\ Projects\Path\To\MDF\And\LDF\Files\ cannot access the specified path or file on the server. Verify that you have the necessary security privileges and that the path or file exists. The answer is easy - the MDF and LDF files where removed when Nant (by way of my dev machine) issued a drop command. But, after replacing the MDF and LDF files, I want to reattach the database but the above error keeps coming up when I select "Add". Also, I have already "unattached" the database in question and it no longer appears on the left under "databases". I have tried to replace a copy of the MDF and LDF files in the folder being referenced and that didn't work. Any ideas as to how to gracefully get rid of this error?

• Ways to wrap 32-bit .dll so it will work in a 64-bit OS

  So, I've been using JPIB to communicate with GPIB devices in my java program. However, I have run into a snag. Newer systems are built on 64 bit OS's. However, the jpib.dll file is written in 32-bit. I can't think of any kind of calls that it would need to make that are truly 64-bit dependent. The real trouble here is that the JPIB project hasn't been updated since september of 2006. I've tried emailing the dev through SourceForge but I don't think I'll get anywhere with that. Does anyone know of any ways around this? Or know how (and could tell me how) to recompile the .dll into AMD-64 compliance?

I am unsure, the first example looks neat but are two different arrays, and the second is a single array and seem to transmit what is being done easier. I also considered using an if-else, but I don't like the idea of writing two arr = .... Or are there better options? I need serious guidance, I have never worried about others seeing my code.

  I have a development setup from this tutorial: http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2009/10/27/build-your-own-dev-server-with-virtualbox/ But what I can't figure out is how to share a folder on my Ubuntu virtualized machine with the host Win7. I want to use a Windows text editor to edit code that's on my Ubuntu server. I've tried using the Shared Folders setting, adding "/var/www" but it says that the path is not absolute. When I click on "other", it only allows me to browse folders on my Win7 host. Both the host and guest are 64-bit OS. Thanks in advance!

• What is XML good for and when should i be using it?

  I'm curious, I've been developing pretty powerful websites/web apps, and I've never learnt XML, even odder I've never really felt the need to. It's not like Curl or Prepared Statements where before knowing what they did and how they worked I had a feeling 'there's got to be an easier way to do this!' or 'there's got to be something designed for this!'. Currently I work with MySQL and JSON and I don't have this feeling of 'I need to learn that' (XML), this must be wrong! I'm really interested to hear some compelling arguments for XML, and learn about things which it can do beter than JSON or MySQL (or some other aspect of web dev) and when i should be using it!

• case sensititivity with users controller on certain hosting

  We generally use two different hosting services. On one, everything works ticketyboo, as it does on my local dev servers. On the other server, however, I am having this problem: I can't access the users controller like this: http://www.example.com/users/login But I can like this: http://www.example.com/Users/login ** note the capitalised 'Users' ** If I displace the application to a sub-folder everything works fine (both upper- and lowercase). The hosting company have looked at it and can't see a problem at their end and they assure me that users is not a reserved word. You might say this isn't a problem, just use the version that works. Unfortunately it leads to problems downstream where Cake core starts generating urls itself. Anybody else seen this problem or know the solution? [This only occurs on the users controller - all others work as expected]

  I have written a script to create an audit trails to my database in a second one db. So far I had no problems during tests on my dev machine from SQL Server Management Studio. Problems started to occurs when I first tried to test my triggers from my application by modyfing data in it. Using profiler I found out, that my audit trails db is not visible in sys.databases, so here lies the problem. The application using an Application Role, so as I found on MSDN, that's why I can't get access to other db on the server. I'm not a DBA. I have no experience with properly settings the security stuff, so please guide me, how can I set the setting for guest account (according to MSDN) to get access to this db? I need to have a record for this database in sys.databases and I need to be able to insert data in this database in all tables. No select, update or delete I need.

  Hello, I am writing a backend application which needs to be able to send multiple SQL commands to a MySQL server. MySQL = 5.x support multiple statements, but unfortunately we are interfacing with MySQL 4.x. I am trying to find a way (hint: regex) to split SQL statements by their semicolon, but it should ignore semicolons in single and double quotes strings. http://www.dev-explorer.com/articles/multiple-mysql-queries has a very nice regex to do that, but doesn't support double quotes. I'd be happy to hear your suggestions.

• Resizing Ubuntu x64 Server Partition with VirtualBox not reflected in OS

  I've already resized my virtual disk with VirtualBox, but now need to extend the partition of my Ubuntu VM itself. I thought I was on my way with GParted live CD, but after I resize the "extended" filesystem partition, and then the child "lvm2 pv" filesystem partition to fill the unallocated space, df -h still shows the original disk size after I reboot into the VM. Any tips on this? I've scoured the webs tirelessly. Should I be resizing the boot (/dev/sda1) partition instead? Should I try to convert my lvm2 to ext4 or something? I'm lost on this. Note: VirtualBox hard disk is "dynamic". Specs: VBox 4.2.18 Ubuntu 12.04.2 amd64 Gparted 0.16.2-1b-i486

• Issuew while checking in in TFS client explorer 2005

  We have recently installed Team Explorer client for 2005 and TFS server 2008.. We have been using VS2005 and VSS earlier. To connect to TFS server 2008 we have installed a hotfix VS80sp1-KB932544-X86-ENU.exe. Everything has been setup well. However I noticed that when the files are checked out and u make some modifications , during checking in resolve confict dialog box asking to merge changes done by others isn't appearing. Instead the file is getting checked in overwriting the changes done by others. Is there some setting that needs to be done on TFS server 2008? Kindly help.

The names are in a different table.
