  I have a button in my activity, when you click the button an if statement is ran against its text label; if(BTN_1.getText()=="firsttext"){ //do some stuff, then... BTN_1.setText("secondtext"); }else if(BTN_1.getText()=="secondtext"){ //do other stuff, then... BTN_1.setText("firsttext"); } Firstly, if I hit the home button and go back to the desktop and then click back onto my app the view has reset its self; if I press the button and leave it in a state where the text of the button is "secondtext", when I return to my app it says "firsttext", how can I stop the view of my app refreshing its self like this? Secondly, under my XML layout I have defined the buttons text; android:text="firsttext" But this won't actually match my if statement above, under onCreate of this app I have: BTN_CONNECT.setText("Connect"); But visually the text of the button is exactly the same, why won't it match?   I have a class that has an output() method which returns a matplotlib Figure instance. I have a decorator I wrote that takes that fig instance and turns it into a Django response object. My decorator looks like this: class plot_svg(object): def __init__(self, view): self.view = view def __call__(self, *args, **kwargs): print args, kwargs fig = self.view(*args, **kwargs) canvas=FigureCanvas(fig) response=HttpResponse(content_type='image/svg+xml') canvas.print_svg(response) return response and this is how it was being used: def as_avg(self): return plot_svg(self.output)() The only reason I has it that way instead of using the "@" syntax is because when I do it with the "@": @plot_svg def as_svg(self): return self.output() I get this error: as_svg() takes exactly 1 argument (0 given) I'm trying to 'fix' this by putting it in the "@" syntax but I can't figure out how to get it working. I'm thinking it has something to do with self not getting passed where it's supposed to...

  I'm using a filter in web.xml to check if a user is logged in or not: <filter> <filter-name>LoginFilter</filter-name> <filter-class>com.mycompany.LoginFilter</filter-class> </filter> <filter-mapping> <filter-name>LoginFilter</filter-name> <url-pattern>/*</url-pattern> </filter-mapping> And this works like a charm until I have a stylesheet or image I want to exclude from this filter. I know one approach is to put everything that's protected inside /privateor similar, and then set the url-pattern to: <url-pattern>/private/*</url-pattern>. The downside to this is my URLs now looking like: http://www.mycompany.com/private/mypage instead of http://www.mycompany.com/mypage. • Library to parse ERB files

  I am attempting to parse, not evaluate, rails ERB files in a Hpricot/Nokogiri type manner. The files I am attempting to parse contain HTML fragments intermixed with dynamic content generated using ERB (standard rails view files) I am looking for a library that will not only parse the surrounding content, much the way that Hpricot or Nokogiri will but will also treat the ERB symbols, <%, <%= etc, as though they were html/xml tags. Ideally I would get back a DOM like structure where the <%, <%= etc symbols would be included as their own node types. I know that it is possible to hack something together using regular expressions but I was looking for something a bit more reliable as I am developing a tool that I need to run on a very large view code base where both the html content and the erb content are important. For example, content such as: blah blah blah <divMy Great Text <%= my_dynamic_expression %</div Would return a tree structure like: root - text_node (blah blah blah) - element (div) - text_node (My Great Text ) - erb_node (<%=)

I am going to be moving a bunch of my software to Java soon and it is very very heavy on its usage of E. Does Java have anything near equivalent to that usage?

• android: using listpreference and retrieving key string...

  I have a settings menu that pops up and in it is a listpreference type menu. It is associated with a settings.xml file where there are 'array-strings' within it. It all works good but I don't know how to retrieve the users preference. As an example, let's say the user picks a color (red, green, or blue). The list that I've made within my 'array-strings' contain the text red, green, and blue. Within my code, I would like to do something if the user has choosen red, something else if they choose blue, etc., etc. Would I use a 'case' statement or an 'if' statement? And most importantly, how would I retrieve the users preference - the key? (am I checking for a boolean?) Help would be appreciated...thank you...

  I've written a couple of tests for a small web app, but I get an error when I try to run the page specific tests that makes use of WicketTester. Google sends me to a mailing list for Apache Wicket, where a user experienced the same exception. He/she said the problem was that AnnotApplicationContextMock was initialized before the Wicket Application. I've pasted my WicketApplication class as well. Has any of you dealt with this error before? I've pasted the exception and the class below.   There is the same question listed under http://stackoverflow.com/questions/427007/the-key-userid-does-not-exist-in-the-appsettings-configuration-section, but unfortunately none of the answers worked in my case. All was working fine, I checked everything in and when I opened the solution again, it started crashing on the above. I cannot find any hint of what I am doing wrong. • Linq-to-sql Compiled Query is caching result from disposed DataContext

  Compiled query: public static Func<OperationalDataContext, short, Machine> QueryMachineById = CompiledQuery.Compile((OperationalDataContext db, short machineID) => db.Machines.Where(m => m.MachineID == machineID).SingleOrDefault()); It looks like compiled query is caching Machine object and returning the same object even if query is called from new DataContext (I’m disposing DataContext in the service but I’m getting Machine from previous DataContext). I use POCOs and XML mapping. Getting cached object from the same datacontext is ok, but when I call query with new DataContext I don’t want to get object from old datacontext. • Sitemaps on multiple front end servers using a http handler, is that a good idea?

  Question 1 We would like to generate a site map for our CMS site We have multiple front end servers with approx a million articles. Environment multiple MS SQL servers multiple front end servers (load balanced) ASP.net - and IIS 6 Windows 2003 To have the site maps (the site map index file, and the site map files) physically on the front end servers will be a operations nightmare and error prone. So we are considering using http handlers instead so that it does not matter what server gets the request, it will be able to serve the correct xml file. Question 2 If we ping Google each time we publish a new article will that effect us negatively if that happens more than once a hour. Thanks!

• Visual Studio 2010 Productivity Tips and Tricks-Part 2: Key Shortcuts

  Ask anyone that knows me, and they will confirm that I hate the mouse.  This isn’t because I deny affection to objects that don’t look like their mammalian-named self, but rather for a much more simple and not-insane reason: I have terrible eyesight.  Introduction Thanks to a degenerative eye disease known as Choroideremia, I have learned to rely more on the keyboard which I can feel digital/static positions of keys relative to my fingers, than the much more analog/random position of the mouse.  Now, I would like to share some of the keyboard shortcuts with you now, as I believe that they not only increase my productivity, but yours as well once you know them (if you don’t already of course)...  I share one of my biggest tips for productivity in the conclusion at the end. Visual Studio Key Shortcuts Global Editor Shortcuts These are shortcuts that are available from almost any application running in Windows, however are many times forgotten. Shortcut Action Visual Studio 2010 Functionality Ctrl + X Cut This shortcut works without a selection. If nothing is selected, the entire line that the caret is on is cut from the editor. Ctrl + C Copy This shortcut works without a selection. If nothing is selected, the entire line that the caret is on is copied from the editor. Ctrl + V Paste If you copied an entire line by the method above, the data is pasted in the line above the current caret line. Ctrl + Shift + V Next Clipboard Element Cut/Copy multiple things, and then hit this combo repeatedly to switch to the next clipboard item when pasting. Ctrl + Backspace Delete Previous Will delete the previous word from the editor directly before the caret. If anything is selected, will just delete that. Ctrl + Del Delete Next Word Will delete the next word/space from the editor directly after the caret. If anything is selected, will just delete that. Shift + Del Delete Focused Line Will delete the line from the editor that the caret is on. If something is selected, will just delete that. Ctrl + ? or Ctrl + ? Left/Right by Word This will move the caret left or right by word or special character boundary. Holding Shift will also select the word. Ctrl + F Quick Find Either the Quick Find panel, or the search bar if you have the Productivity Power Tools installed. Ctrl + Shift + F Find in Solution Opens up the 'Find in Files' window, allowing you to search your solution, as well as using regex for pattern matching. F2 Rename File... While not debugging, selecting a file in the solution explorer\navigator and pressing F2 allows you to rename the selected file. Global Application Shortcuts These are shortcuts that are available from almost any application running in Windows, however are many times forgotten... Again... Shortcut Action Visual Studio 2010 Functionality Ctrl + N New File dialog Opens up the 'New File' dialog to add a new file to the current directory in the Solution\Project. Ctrl + O Open File dialog Opens up the 'Open File' dialog to open a file in the editor, not necessarily in the solution. Ctrl + S Save File dialog Saves the currently focused editor tab back to your HDD/SSD. Ctrl + Shift + S Save All... Quickly save all open/edited documents back to your disk. Ctrl + Tab Switch Panel\Tab Tapping this combo switches between tabs quickly. Holding down Ctrl when hitting tab will bring up a chooser window. Building Shortcuts These are shortcuts that are focused on building and running a solution. These are not usable when the IDE is in Debug mode, as the shortcut changes by context. Shortcut Action Visual Studio 2010 Functionality Ctrl + Shift + B Build Solution Starts a build process on the solution according to the current build configuration manager settings. Ctrl + Break Cancel a Building Solution Will cancel a build operation currently in progress. Good for long running builds when you think of one last change. F5 Start Debugging Will build the solution if needed and launch debugging according to the current configuration manager settings. Ctrl + F5 Start Without Debugger Will build the solution if needed and launch the startup project without attaching a debugger. Debugging Shortcuts These are shortcuts that are used when debugging a solution. Shortcut Action Visual Studio 2010 Functionality F5 Continue Execution Continues execution of code until the next breakpoint. Ctrl + Alt + Break Pause Execution Pauses the program execution. Shift + F5 Stop Debugging Stops the current debugging session. NOTE: Web apps will still continue processing after stopping the debugger. Keep this in mind if working on code such as credit card processing. Ctrl + Shift + F5 Restart Debugging Stops the current debugging session and restarts the debugging session from the beginning. F9 Place Breakpoint Toggles/Places a breakpoint in the editor on the current line. Set a breakpoint in condensed code by highlighting the statement first. F10 Step Over Statement When debugging, executes all code in methods/properties on the current line until the next line. F11 Step Into Statement When debugging, steps into a method call so you can walk through the code executed there (if available). Ctrl + Alt + I Immediate Window Open the Immediate Window to execute commands when execution is paused. Navigation Shortcuts These are shortcuts that are used for navigating in the IDE or editor panel. Shortcut Action Visual Studio 2010 Functionality F4 Properties Panel Opens the properties panel for the selected item in the editor/designer/solution navigator (context driven). F12 Go to Definition Press F12 with the caret on a member to navigate to its declaration. With the Productivity tools, Ctrl + Click works too. Ctrl + K Ctrl + T View Call Hierarchy View the call hierarchy of the member the caret is on. Great for going through n-tier solutions and interface implementations! Ctrl + Alt + B Breakpoint Window View the breakpoint window to manage breakpoints and their advanced options. Allows easy toggling of breakpoints. Ctrl + Alt + L Solution Navigator Open the solution explorer panel. Ctrl + Alt + O Output Window View the output window to see build\general output from Visual Studio. Ctrl + Alt + Enter Live Web Preview Only available with the Web Essential plugin. Launches the auto-updating Preview panel. Testing Shortcuts These are shortcuts that are used for running tests in the IDE. Please note, Visual Studio 2010 is all about context. If your caret is within a test method when you use one of these combinations, the combination will apply to that test. If your caret is within a test class, it will apply to that class. If the caret is outside of a test class, it will apply to all tests. Shortcut Action Visual Studio 2010 Functionality Ctrl + R T Run Test(s) Run all tests in the current context without a debugger attached. Breakpoints will not be stopped on. Ctrl + R Ctrl + T Run Test(s) (Debug) Run all tests in the current context with a debugger attached. This allows you to use breakpoints. Substitute A for T from the preceding combos to run/debug ALL tests in the current context. Substitute Y for T from the preceding combos to run/debug ALL impacted/covering tests for a method in the current context. Advanced Editor Shortcuts These are shortcuts that are used for more advanced editing in the editor window. Shortcut Action Visual Studio 2010 Functionality Shift + Alt + ? Shift + Alt + ? Multiline caret up/down Use this combo to edit multiple lines at once. Not too many uses for it, but once in a blue moon one comes along. Ctrl + Alt + Enter Insert Line Above Inserts a blank line above the line the caret is currently on. No need to be at end or start of line, so no cutting off words/code. Ctrl + K Ctrl + C Comment Selection Comments the current selection out of compilation. Ctrl + K Ctrl + U Uncomment Selection Uncomments the current selection into compilation. Ctrl + K Ctrl + D Format Document Automatically formats the document into a structured layout. Lines up nodes or code into columns intelligently. Alt + ? Alt + ? Code line up/down *Use this combo to move a line of code up or down quickly. Great for small rearrangements of code. *Requires the Productivity Power pack from Microsoft. Conclusion This list is by no means meant to be exhaustive, but these are the shortcuts I use regularly every hour/minute of the day. There are still 100s more in Visual Studio that you can discover through the configuration window, or by tooltips. Something that I started doing months ago seems to have interest in my office.. In my last post, I talked about how I hated a cluttered UI. One of the ways that I aimed to resolve that was by systematically cleaning up the toolbars week by week. First day, I removed ALL icons that I already knew shortcuts to, or would never use them (Undo in a toolbar?!). Then, every week from that point on, I make it a point to remove an icon/two from the toolbar and make an effort to remember its key combination. I gain extra space in the toolbar area, AND become more productive at the same time! I hope that you found this article interesting or at least somewhat informative.. Maybe a shortcut or two you didn't know. I know some of them seem trivial, but I often see people going to the edit menu for Copy/Paste... Thought a refresher might be helpful!

• Android Programmatically created Button Persistance

  So in an app I'm messing around with I programmatically create some buttons. Then I setContentView(); to a different page. Then if I come back to the original page (on which I placed the programmatically created buttons), they no longer exist. I guess this makes sense as I am calling setContentView(R.layout.main); again which is just the original xml file with no data pointing to the buttons. So is there a way to have the buttons persist over such screen transitions? Thanks.

• Spring Security - is Role and ACL security overkill?

  I have a 3 tier application that requires security authorizations be placed on various domain objects. Whether I use Spring's ACL implementation or roll my own, it seems to me that ACL based security can only be used to authorize (service) methods and cannot be used to authorize URL or web service invocations. I think this because how could a web service call check the ACL before it has hydrated the XML payload? Also, all the examples for web access security in the Spring documentation are securing URL's based on Role. Is it typical to use Spring's roles to secure web presentation and web service calls, while at the same time using ACL's to secure the business methods? Is this overkill?

• How does the same origin policy apply to IP addresses

  I have a server on our company intranet that runs JBoss. I want to send API calls to this server from my machine, also on the intranet, and get the resulting XML responses using JQuery. I read the entry on Wikipedia but am confused how that applies to my situation, since our machines only have IP addresses, not domain names. I have server URL: 10.2.200.3:8001/serviceroot/service client IP address: 10.2.201.217 My questions are: As far as I understand these are different domains, right? So I have to use a proxy to issue JQuery.ajax calls to the server If I want to avoid doing (2), can I install Apache on the server and server the page with JS code form there? But then the JS will be from 10.2.200.3 and the server is at 10.2.200.3:8001. Aren't these considered different domains according to policy? Thanks!

• Theme confusion in SpreadsheetML.

  I've been fighting this all day. Inside my styles.xml file I have color information given like so: <fgColor theme="0" tint="-0.249977111117893" / ECMA 376 defines a theme color reference as: Index into the <clrScheme collection, referencing a particular <sysClr or <srgbClr value expressed in the Theme part. Ok, that sounds easy. Here is an excerpt from my clrScheme xml: <a:clrScheme name="Office" <a:dk1 <a:sysClr val="windowText" lastClr="000000" / </a:dk1 <a:lt1 <a:sysClr val="window" lastClr="FFFFFF" / </a:lt1 Index zero is black, and they are wanting to darken it? I can tell you that after the tint is applied, the color should be #F2F2F2. My confusion is what does theme="0" really mean? It can't possible mean to darken #000000. Checking MSDN only confuses me even more. From http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd560821.aspx note that the theme color integer begins counting from left to right in the palette starting with zero. Theme color 3 is the dark 2 text/background color. Actually, if you start counting at zero the third entry is Light 2. Dark 2 is the second one. Can anyone here shed some light on this subject for me? What does theme="0" really mean? Here is the VB6 code I have been working with to apply the tint. You can paste it into your vba editor and run the test sub. • Problem using Blend 3 Interaction.Behaviours in VS2010

  There seems to be a problem with support for the Interactivity namespace of Blend 3 in the VS2010 xaml editor. I have the following installed: VS2010 Blend 3 + Blend 3 SDK I am trying to compile a demo project that is targeted at .Net 4 Client Profile and has a reference to System.Windows.Interactivity (in the Blend 3 folder). In the object browser everything appears to be fine. I can also access Interaction.Behaviours from code-behind, but if I put the namespace xmlns:i="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/2010/interactivity" in the xaml file and try to use it, the intellisense is blank. If I copy something in there anyway, the compiler says: The tag 'Interaction.Behaviors' does not exist in XML namespace 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/2010/interactivity'. Do I need to install Blend 4 RC or something?
