• iPhone, Convenience Method or Alloc / Release?

  Whilst developing for the iPhone I had a stubborn memory leak that I eventually tracked down to NSXMLParser. However whilst looking for that it got me thinking about maybe changing a lot of my convenience methods to alloc/release. Is there any good reason for doing that? In a large app I can see how releasing memory yourself quickly is a better idea, but in a small app is there any other difference between the two methods. NSNumber *numberToAdd = [NSNumber numberWithInt:intValue]; dostuff ... OR NSNumber *numberToAdd = [[NSNumber alloc] initWithInt:intValue]; doStuff ... [numberToAdd release]; cheers gary.

• Windows Share authentication from Active Directory Linux login

  Hi, I'm using Active Directory to log into RHEL. To do this, I followed the steps outlined here: http://www.markwilson.co.uk/blog/2007/05/using-active-directory-to-authenticate-users-on-a-linux-computer.htm I'd like to be able to read data from Windows Servers shared folders without being prompted for a password. On Windows I log into an AD domain, and when I access windows file shares on a server on the LAN (also part of the AD domain) my I can just access them with no authentication step. I've used SMBclient on Linux to access these shares, but it asks for my password. I would like to be able to script access to the data on the shares, but I can't if there's a password prompt in the way. Well, I could, but it's not how I want to do it. Now, since I'm logged in using my active directory username & password, can't I just access the shares without jumping that extra hoop? I know I can mount the share using something like: //192.168.0.5/share /mnt/windows cifs auto,username=steve,password=secret,rw 0 0 but access will depend who is logged in... each user logging in should have their own unique AD access privelages. • Asp.Net 1 -> Asp.Net 2 upgrade - Machine.Config - unrecognized parameter

  Hi All, I am working on upgrading a web app to asp.net 2 from 1. VS 2008 did its conversion things, and everything is building successfully and has been converted to a web application via the appropriate menu item in VS 2008. On launching the site using the Asp.net development server I am receiving a configuration error on the appsettings line in the machine config of Unrecognized attribute 'restartOnExternalChanges'. The app targets asp.net 2 in the projects properties in VS, and the error page indicates similar : Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.3053; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.3053 The error message seems to indicate I am trying to run this in an asp.net 1 environment, but surely that isnt the case, and if so how do I rectify this. • Facebook RESTful API require_login() callback

  Hi, I'm trying to authenticate a user through the RESTful API (not Connect) but I can't since the callback system does not work for me. I have a local app that creates the Facebook API object with my key and secret, then calls the Facebook API require_login() method; I am sent to Facebook login, I login, and then I am sent to http://www.facebook.com/login.php?auth_token=<...>, where there's another login with just a field for password (not username), I write it again, and after that I am redirected to normal Facebook home. What am I doing wrong? I have set the callback URL in the Facebook app proprieties. Does it have anything to do with the fact that it's localhost? Thanks!

• Updating the datalist in a RadComboBox

  So I'm just struggling with a lot of little things in the web app so I'm checking up with all kinds of stuff to make sure i'm not breaking it cause of stupid problems. At some point in my web app (trying to keep it mostly Asynchronous) I have to update the list in my RadComboBox because something was added. Do I just need to call RadComboBox.DataBind() again? Since I don't explicitly use its datasource(I do it in the manual insert using a string fashion) object to insert my new record do I need to tell that to update? The list just doesn't seem to update when i just call databind so I feel like i need to have the datasource recheck for entries or SOMETHING Thanks

• Why not use development provisioning instead of ad hoc?

  I was under the impression that when you use a development provisioning profile for a build of an app, only the specified developers can deploy that build to a phone. But I just deployed a build that uses a development profile to a phone using Xcode Organizer, even though I'm not one of the valid developers for that profile. One of my colleagues, also not a valid developer, did the same with his phone using iTunes. In that case, why not use a development provisioning profile for distributing your app to e.g. your QA team, instead of ad hoc distribution?

  Hi, I use the Searchable plugin with Grails I have the need to change the directory to which Compass points to, depending upon a UI choice by the user. Normally, this value is set in the compassConnection variable of the searchable map in grails-app/conf/Searchable.groovy, like so, and gets called at app startup time: searchable { compassConnection = new File( "/path/to/index/file/directory" ).absolutePath ... } To do what I need to do, I think that I need to get a handle into the compass config variable and then call config.setConnection("/new/path/to/index/dir") I don't know how I can get a reference to the config compass variable Am I right in assuming that I need to call setConnection(String) only, or is(are) there any other step(s) I need to take? • [three20] dynamically add Items to TTLauncher

  Hi guys, in my app i got a TTLauncher Object with some TTLauncherItems in it. Now i want to add some Items dynamically inside my App by pressing a button. Is there a simple way to do that or do i have to create my own methods? In the original facebook application there is already something like that implemented. (You can add your Friends to the Launcher) If not, what would be the best thing to do something like that? Store all "extra items" in a plist oder even in a database and query them, each time TTLauncher object is initialized? Thanks for help :)

• What is the difference between #ifdef __IPHONE_3.2 and #if __IPHONE_3.2?

  Hi, I have an iphone app that needs to work for 3.1.3 for the iPhone and 3.2 for the iPad. It is an iPhone app that I want to work on the iPad. The main difference is the MPMoviePlayerController which introduces/and deprecates lots of things in 3.2. Since, the iPhone OS only goes up to 3.1.3 and the iPad is on 3.2, I need to seperate my code so it only compiles the required code for the respective OS. I can't use [[UIDevice currentDevice] model] because I end up with deprecated warnings on the 3.1.3 code. Also, UIUserInterfaceIdiomPad is new in 3.2 so it doesn't work well with 3.1.3... So, I decided to use this, which only compiles what is necessary for the particular OS: #if __IPHONE _3_2 //do 3.2 iPad stuff #else //do 3.1.3 iPhone/iPod Touch stuff #endif My question is... What is the difference between these? #ifdef __IPHONE_3_2 and #if __IPHONE_3_2 Thank you

• Physical-to-virtual for personal use

  One of my current projects involves reducing the number of old computers lying around. So far, the office systems have been downsized from 5 to 2. One system which had no data on it was dumped entirely, while three other identical boxes were consolidated into to one (I swap hard drives as needed and they just work(tm)). I want to make further cuts. The physical systems in question all run windows xp sp3, and were old Pentium 4s with 256 MB of RAM. Currently, I have got a VirtualBox running on another system. My intention is to migrate all services to that. We can assume that disk space and RAM on the host is not an issue. I'd rather not go with a client-server physical-to-virtual (P2V) method like what VirtualBox uses now. I have a few specific concerns as well - specifically whether I'd need to reactivate or sysprep for dissimilar hardware first. An offline tool for imaging (Windows or Linux) would not be an issue since the drives could be mounted onto another system I have anyway or I could use a LiveCD. What would be my options for P2V conversion, and what would I need to keep in mind when doing this?

  Scenario, simplified for brevity: A developer creates an application for a customer. The customer sells this app to end-users. The app requires a license key to run, and this key is generated by the customer for each end-user with a simple tool created by the developer. The license key contains an expiry date for the license and is encrypted so the end-user can’t tamper with it. The problem here is that the developer (or anybody who has a copy of the license key generator) can easily create valid license keys. Should this generator fall into the wrong hands, it could spell disaster for the customers business. Ideally, the customer would have to use a password to create new license keys. And this password would be unknown to the developer, and somehow baked into the decryption algorithm in the application so it will fail if an attempt to use an unauthorized key is made. How would you implement a solution for this problem that is both transparent and secure?

• Need to Remove Exchange 2003 Server That Crashed During Transition to 2010

  As the title stated, we were running an Exchange 2003 server that we knew was going down soon so we purchased a second server and installed Exchange 2010 into the AD. We managed to move all of the mailboxes off of 2003 and also managed to get the Offline Address Book setup on 2010. At this point the 2003 server bit the dust and will no longer boot. Therefore we were unable to properly uninstall Exchange and remove the last 2003 server so it still exists in AD. As far as the clients are concerned, everything is working properly. However, when I run the Microsoft Exchange Profile Analyzer, I still see the old server and its Administrative Group. I am going to guess that since the old server is showing up in AD, I will not be able to raise Exchange or AD functionality (as the 2003 server was also the only AD DC) levels. I have forced the 2003 DC out of AD so that is no longer an issue. Old Setup: Windows 2003 Server Enterprise & Exchange 2003 Standard New Setup: Windows 2010 Server Enterprise & Exchange 2010 Standard Two Questions: How do you go about manually forcing the 2003 server and its administrative group out of AD? When that is finished, where do you raise the Exchange mode (can't find this for the life of me)?

• HttpWebRequest socket operation during WPF binding in a property getter

  In a property getter of a C# class I am doing a HTTP GET using HttpWebRequest to some https address. WPF's property binding seems to choke on this. If I try to access the property in a simple method e.g. Button_Clicked, it works perfectly. If I use WPF binding to access the same property, the app seems to be blocked on a socket's recv() method indefinitely. Is it a no-no to do this sort of thing during binding? Is app in some special state during binding? Is there an easy way for me to overcome this limitation and still maintain the same basic idea?

  Hi all, I am writing an app, which needs to take the screen shots automatically (just like pressing PrintScreen button). So please suggest me how to get this done. A raw 24 bit BMP image would suffice. PLEASE NOTE: My app is in C, so any win32 APIs that can be called from my code is what I am looking for. (Sometimes back I had got an example code from codeproject which used to get the screen shots but the mouse pointer user to blink when the screen shot is taken. • java "File not found" when using commons-configuration XMLConfiguration with Tomcat

  Hi all, I'm building two apps that uses commons-configuration XMLConfiguration. Since the apps are related, I've build another project, called commons, that has a custom configuration manager that initializes the XMLConfiguration like so: config = new XMLConfiguration("conf/config.xml"); What happens is that the "command-line" app works fine, loading the configuration file. But when I try to use my custom configuration manager on a webapp (using tomcat) I get a "org.apache.commons.configuration.ConfigurationException: Cannot locate configuration source". I've placed the conf directory on the WEB-INF folder, the root folder and the META-INF folder. I've also tried with "/conf/config.xml", "./conf/config.xml" and "../conf/config.xml". The only time I got this to work - on the web app - was using a absolute path. What am I missing? Thanks, Bruno

• write() causes fatal crash when filedescriptor becomes invalid

  I'm writing an iPhone App with a webserver in it. To handle a web request, I take the web request and write() to it the data that I want to send back. When I try to download a moderately sized file (3-6MB) it works fine, but if I cancel the download halfway through, the app crashes and leaves no trace of an error. I'm thinking that the file descriptor becomes invalid halfway through the write, and causes the crash. I really don't know if this is what causes the crash, i'm just assuming. I'm basing my webserver off of this example. NSString *header = @""; NSData *data = [NSData dataWithContentsOfFile:fullPath]; write (fd, [header UTF8String], [header length]); write(fd, [data bytes], [data length]); close(fd); Does anyone know how to fix this? I was thinking about chunking the data and then writing each part, but I don't think it would help.

• Push notification not working for the production environment

  I have spent a whole day on this already but still didn't go anywhere. When I run my app in the development mode, I can get the push messages I send to myself thru PushMeBaby without a problem. However, when I try to test it in the production environment, I cannot get any push. I re-generated all the certificates and provisioning profiles, used the aps_production_identity.cer as the certificate for push, changed the ssl to gateway.push.apple.com, and did a release build for the app, but still couldn't get it to work. I found that in PushMeBaby, the line result = SSLHandshake(context); returns error -9844. Does it mean that something is wrong with the aps_production_identity.cer file? This is driving me nuts, can somebody offer a little help? Much appreciated!!!

• What is best practice with SQLite and Android ?

  What is considered "best practice" when executing queries on a sql-lite db within an android app. Is it safe to run inserts, deletes and select queries from an AsyncTask's doInBackground ? Or should I use the UI Thread ? I suppose that db queries can be "heavy" and should not use the UI thread as it can lock up the app - resulting in an ANR. If I have several AsyncTasks, should they share a connection or should they open a connection each ? Any best practices in this area on android?

• Swing combo boxes

  Alright, so I'm simply defining a combo box like so... JComboBox yearSelect = new JComboBox(); Now, I have not even added this to a panel or anything, I've just defined it. When I run the app, nothing displays.. when I comment out this line.. the app displays the other panels like I want it to.. is there something I'm doing wrong? Maybe I'm forgetting something that has to do with combo boxes? I think it may be something stupid that I'm missing.

• UAC being turned off once a day on Windows 7

  I have strange problem on my HP laptop. This began to happen recently. Whenever I start my machine, Windows 7 Action Center displays the following warning: You need to restart your computer for UAC to be turned off. Actually, this does not happen if it happened once on a specific day. For example, when I start the machine in the morning, it shows up; but it never shows up in the subsequent restarts within that day. On the next day, the same thing happens again. I never disable UAC, but obviously some rootkit or virus causes this. As soon as I get this warning, I head for the UAC settings, and re-enable UAC to dismiss this warning. This is a bothersome situation as I can't fix it. First, I have run a full scan on the computer for any probable virus and malware/rootkit activity, but TrendMicro OfficeScan said that no viruses have been found. I went to an old Restore Point using Windows System Restore, but the problem was not solved. 8204 bytes As suggested in this very similar question, I have run full scans (+boot time scans) with RegRun and UnHackMe, but they also did not find anything. I have carefully examined all entries in the Event Viewer, but there's nothing wrong. Now I know that there is a hidden trojan (rootkit) on my machine which seems to disguise itself quite successfully. Note that I don't have the chance to remove the HDD, or reinstall the OS as this is a work machine subjected to certain IT policies on a company domain. Despite all my attempts, the problem still remains. I strictly need a to-the-point method or a pukka rootkit remover to remove whatever it is. I don't want to monkey with the system settings, i.e. disabling auto runs one by one, messing the registry, etc. EDIT 2: I have found an article which is closely related to my trouble: Malware can turn off UAC in Windows 7; “By design” says Microsoft. • Location of New Window after old window closed

  I have an app that allows multiple windows. I have a strange bug where, if I repeatedly open and close windows, new windows are positioned lower and lower on the screen. I would expect this if I were keeping the windows open, but it seems that the OS X window tiling mechanism is unaware of when my windows are closing. Potentially relevant notes: I am using garbage collection. This is not a document-based app. When I close a window, the corresponding menu item is removed from the "Window" menu. Any hints as to what I might be doing wrong would be appreciated. Thanks!

• Integrating Fedex and UPS into Rails Apps

  I'm working on integrating a shipping solution into a Rails ecommerce app. We're only going to use one shipping provider. So the question is: Fedex or UPS? I'm wondering what Rails developers think about the tech side of this question. What do you think about the APIs, ease of integration, focus on developer's needs between Fedex and UPS? I was leaning towards Fedex, but from looking at the developers resources sections of both sites, it seems that UPS might be more developer friendly. Also, I'm going to be using Shopify's active_shipping gem: http://github.com/Shopify/active_shipping And I also based my app off the Spree Ecommerce solution, but I don't think that's particularly relevant to the question. Spree wrote a wrapper to integrate active_shipping with the Spree system. I gave away all my points, so SO wont' let me post another link in this question. But if you google "Spree active-shipping", their wrapper on github is the first result. Thanks.

• Silverlight clipping a string on mac

  hello, I am facing a very strange issue in my silverlight app on all browsers on mac but it is working perfectly in all windows browsers. in my silverlight app there is a scenario in which I create a very long text string and then pass it to a wcf service which then saves the string in a text file server. the issue is that in mac every time string is clipped after about same location. but it is working perfectly fine in all browsers on windows. btw in silverlight I am using string builder to build the string.
