• .NET Rectangle Off By 1

  After working with the .NET GDI+ Rectangle object, I've noticed that if I create a rectangle that is X:0 * Y:0 * Width:100 * Height:100, the Right and Bottom properties are set to 100, 100. Shouldn't this be 99, 99? 0 - 99 is 100 pixels. 0 - 100 is 101 pixels. FWIW, the documentation does say the right is computed by x + width and the bottom is y + height, but is that correct? Perhaps "correct" doesn't matter here as long it's consistent? All I know is that it is somewhat (read... very) annoying!

• How to control the "flow" of an ASP.NET MVC (3.0) web app that relies on Facebook membership, with Facebook C# SDK?

  I want to totally remove the standard ASP.NET membership system and use Facebook only for my web app's membership. Note, this is not a Facebook canvas app question. Typically, in an ASP.NET app you have some key properties & methods to control the "flow" of an app. Notably: Request.IsAuthenticated, [Authorize] (in MVC apps), Membership.GetUser() and Roles.IsUserInRole(), among others. It looks like [FacebookAuthorize] is equivalent to [Authorize]. Also, there's some standard work I do across all controllers in my site. So I built a BaseController that overrides OnActionExecuting(FilterContext). Typically, I populate ViewData with the user's profile within this action. Would performance suffer if I made a call to fbApp.Get("me") in this action? I use the Facebook Javascript SDK to do registration, which is nice and easy. But that's all client-side, and I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around when to use client-side facebook calls versus server-side. There will be a point when I need to grab the user's facebook uid and store it in a "profile" table along with a few other bits of data. That would probably be best handled on the return url from the registration plugin... correct? On a side note, what data is returned from fbApp.Get("me")?

  In my winform app in VB.NET i want to use the localization option. But i have a few questions/problems. I'm using a menu strip to select an other language. But it seems that is doesn't change my menustip text to my selected language. It does change my labels, buttons, and textboxes but menu strips doesnt seem to change when i choose an other language. Also is it possible to get those resx files such as MyForm.fr-FR.resx compiled so it isn't an external file outside my app? Or to get those files in an Language folder at the same location of my app, so i don't have all those fr-FR, nl-Nl folders in the same location as my program.

• Do you catch expected exceptions in the controller or business service of your asp.net mvc application

  I am developing an asp.net mvc application where user1 could delete data records which were just loaded before by user2. User2 either changes this non-existent data record (Update) or is doing an insert with this data in another table that a foreign-key constraint is violated. Where do you catch such expected exceptions? In the Controller of your asp.net mvc application or in the business service? Just a sidenote: I only catch the SqlException here if its a ForeignKey constraint exception to tell the user that another user has deleted a certain parent record and therefore he can not create the testplan. But this code is not fully implemented yet!   I want to create a mecanism in a large .net application to handle all the exceptions in the application, and to save the error messages (in db or log file) so these errors can be fixed, and so we are aware of the problems in the application. • How are value types implemented in .NET

  Been looking around the net and can't find any articles about how value types are actually implemented. For instance, an Int32 is a struct and it's direct parent is System.ValueType and that's ultimate parent is System.Object. Object is a class - I imagine ValueType is a class? What's the class hierarchy? What part does the CLR have to play? At what stage and how does the CLR know to allocate value types to the stack? (FYI, I am aware that value types are stored where they are declared).

• Connect to Oracle 11g using VS2010.net Drivers/Cleints

  Hey all i am trying to redistribute my app that uses Oracle 11g: Imports Oracle.DataAccess.Client The problem i am having is that it will not run on a machine that doesnt seem to have the correct drivers that its looking for. When i install ODAC 11.2 Release 3 (11.2.0.2.1) with Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio on the test VM it works just fine but thats a 230+mb file to download and install! Not to mention that if the user already has Oracle 10/11g on their machine that it may mess up their current connections/etc by installing that setup file. Is there another setup package that i can install that only has the Oracle Data Provider for .NET 2.0 11.2.0.2.0 or whatever its needing from that ODAC 11.2 Release 3 file. So any help about what i need to go about fixing this problem would be great! :) Thanks, David

  I'm converting a VB6 application into VB.Net and having trouble with the basics. I start off with:- Dim xl As Excel.Application Dim xlsheet As Excel.Worksheet Dim xlwbook As Excel.Workbook xl = New Excel.Application xlwbook = xl.Workbooks.Open(my_data.file_name) xlsheet = xlwbook.Sheets(1) but the last line doesn't compile; it reports Option Strict On disallows implicit conversion from 'Object' to 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Worksheet' I can make this go away by replacing the line with xlsheet = CType(xlwbook.Sheets(1), Excel.Worksheet) but that does't look like the right thing to do to me. If the assignment is correct, I would have thought the object should naturally have the correct type. So: does anyone know what the correct thing I should be doing here?

  I've installed a vb.net windows service on a Windows 2008 machine, that is attempting to connect to SQL 2005. The service starts succesfully, but can't see the database. The event log has the following entry. The description for Event ID 0 from source SU4.ESMR.DAL.Job.FillPriorityJobByType(oJobDS, TypeID: 3 cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. This was tested locally on both XP and 2008. All environments are 32 bit.

Resource: /Content/Images/Foo.png Does this request go through my route list .. fails to match any controllers / actions to this request and then .. i donno ... attempt that path directly?

  I've had a look through quite a few tutorials, but cant seem to find how to open multipe windows? I'm not expecting to have them layer etc, I just want to define multiple window classes and say, from a menu, launch the appropriate window class from the menu window. Then when that window is finished, call the close method on it and menu will show again. I have managed to do the same kind of functionality using panels, but think window is really what I should be using? (.NET MF 4.0) I assume you can do this? I think im missing something obvious?

  Has anyone ever thought to attempt to modify the default ASP.NET Server error page to provide a link BACK to the error source in Visual Studio? There is a .NET Framework 2.0 application compiled in the Debug mode with the parameter jitDebugging set to true in app.config <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" /> After any crash we get the dialog box allowing us to send a report or to debug the program. When we choose to debug and select proper VS, the IDE starts but with the announcement: No symbols are loaded for any call stack frame. The source code cannot be displayed. and Disassembly cannot be displayed in run mode. Is there any possiblity to see the code or the spot where the crash has occured?

  I am currently working on a VB.NET project and the hardest thing that I am having trouble with is that everything is black and blue. Having worked a lot with C#, I really like the way that types are colored differently. I have tried going in and having a look at the "Tools > Options > Fonts and Colors" and the various "User Types" under "Display Items" is set to a different colour but its not reflecting that colour in the text editor. • Pass structured data from C++ app to ASP.NET web service.

  I have Visual C++ application that needs to communicate with a ASP.NET web service. Specifically, the app needs to pass structured data (e.g. objects that contain lists of structures, etc) as a parameter to one of the service methods. The C++ application is already generating an xml document that contains this data. The document is generating using an xml library, so it should always well-formed. What is a good method for passing this data to the web service? I'm thinking about passing the document to the web service as a string parameter, then deserializing to a .NET object based on an xsd. But, I hear that passing an xml doc as a string parameter is not recommended. So, my questions: What are the pitfalls associated with sending the document as a string parameter, assuming that the document itself is always well-formed? Assuming the above is a bad idea, what are some good alternate approaches?

It is not possible to use .NET's registry functions, since they have drastic restrictions.   Looking for the best way to determine if a URI exists in VB.NET without downloading the actual content. System.IO.FileExists/My.Computer.FileSystem.FileExists can be used locally to determine if a file exists, is there an equivalent for the Web? Currently I am using a HttpWebRequest to check URI existance using the ResponseStream. This populates the stream if the target does exist and throws an exception if it doesn't. The function is being expanded to also check for PDF files (typically 5MB +), images, etc and it will be a waste of time/bandwidth to actually populate the content into a stream. In the case of "Success" (the target does exist) I do not wish to download the file or page, simply to end up with a Boolean which indicates the whether something exists at the end of this URI.

  How can I convert a length into a value in the range -1.0 to 1.0? Example: my stage is 440px in length and accepts mouse events. I would like to click in the middle of the stage, and rather than an output of X = 220, I'd like it to be X = 0. Similarly, I'd like the real X = 0 to become X = -1.0 and the real X = 440 to become X = 1.0. I don't have access to the stage, so i can't simply center-register it, which would make this process a lot easier. Also, it's not possible to dynamically change the actual size of my stage, so I'm looking for a formula that will translate the mouse's real X coordinate of the stage to evenly fit within a range from -1 to 1.

My first thought had been to create a SQL Server job and use xp_cmdshell to move the files but after a bit of research i decided against it. • vb.net more performance for moving objects

  I have the mission to make a small game for a school project. Pictures boxes, moved by a timer for walking enemies.If there are around 5 or 6 moving picture boxes at the form, my application get troubles and lags. After I kill some enemies (remove them from the Controls Collection of the Form/Panel) It come back smooth. I think the loop of the enemy movement is too complicated but I don't know how to make that simpler. The problem now is, that when I add the dll (API.dll) as reference in an asp.net project, it references a wrong API.dll, though I referenced the correct dll. In turn, it doesn't find GetLDAPlookup, but there is another method that is not in defined here, but in an older version of API.dll...
