• What causes "system call failed" and there are hanging ie processes?

  System: Windows 7 Home Premium IE: 11.0.9600.17107 When I have had many, many apps and windows open, sometimes I'll try to access a folder and get a dialog that says "System Call Failed". I have found the fix for it is to open the task manager and End Process Tree on iexplore.exe and iexplore.exe *32. Often times there will be several of these even when I have closed all my browser windows. Does anyone have any experience with this error?

• Windows 7 x64 - Problem with 32-bit processes...

  Hi All, Is it just me, or is Windows 7 x64 awfully unstable when it comes to 32-bit processes? If I ever find myself in a situation where a 32-bit process hangs or otherwise misbehaves, terminating the process (through e.g. task manager) seems to fail every time - there are no error messages or anything, it's just that the process refuses to terminate. Anyone else have the same problems running 32-bit applications on x64 Windows? Thanks, Will.

  I can't get access to Aero transparency themes in Windows 7. The troubleshooter says that I need to close programs that are using mirror drivers in order for that to work. I've looked through my task manager list of running applications and I can't see any that jump out as the culprit. Is there a program that will tell me what the app causing this issue is? MS Troubleshooter doesn't give me the details.

Is there anyway to get this from inside XP? I looked through device manager but haven't seen anything that would tell me.   Hi, I have Windows 7 64bit, 8gb ram and 1152mb is hardware reserved which leaves me with 7039mb of physical memory available as I can see on the task manager. What is the advantage or disadvantage of keeping it this way? If I disable it from the MSCONFIG, the hardware reserved comes down to 1mb. Well, which way I should keep it for best performance in all meanings considering that nowdays, 8gb is still a lot. Could someone explain the easy way please?

• Windows 7 immediately disconnects a USB drive

  I am having a problem with Windows 7 x64 consistently disconnecting one specific USB mass storage drive immediately after it is connected. The drive in question is a Cowon C2 digital music player which works in standard mass storage controller mode (i.e. no device-specific drivers needed/available). When I connect the player, Windows plays the "USB connect" sound and the device appears (under its correct name) in the device manager, but it never appears as a drive. The player itself displays "USB Connected" for a split-second before reporting that it has been disconnected again. Since the player, by design, reboots after it has been disconnected, Windows plays the "USB disconnect" sound before restarting the whole cycle once the player has powered back on. I am connecting the player through an Intel X79 Chipset motherboard (Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3) to Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. The player used to work fine the first few times I connected it, showing up as an external drive; it only recently stopped working. It is not a problem with the player, since it works fine when connected to another computer, even such running the exact same operating system. It is also not a problem with the USB controller, since the issue is the same on both the Intel USB 2.0 and the Fresco Logic FL1009 USB 3.0 controller ports. I have also not had the problem with any other drive so far. Among the things I have tried so far: Disabling USB legacy mode in BIOS Disabling energy-saving power down for all USB controllers in Windows' device manager Removing and reinstalling Windows' USB mass storage driver Removing and reinstalling Intel and Fresco Logic USB controller driver Restoring the player to factory defaults None of these made a difference. Again, the player used to work fine on the exact same system just days ago; I didn't install any new hardware or drivers on it since then. I would be very grateful for any hints on what else to try. Edit: Here is another new hint; I found out that when I connect the drive before booting Windows, it is available in Windows Explorer as it should, and does not automatically disconnect. If I remove and reconnect it though, the infinite connect/disconnect-loop starts anew.

Server A and server B are in the same IP segment. In the LVM volume on server A, there is all average 500M avi wmv mp4 etc. I tried mounting /dev/mapper/vg_avdvdfiler-lv_root on server A to server B through NFS, then use cp to copy. It is clear I failed. Because the LVM volume is too big, I do not have good idea why. I hope a good solution here.

• moving from WinXP to WinServer in VmWare

  I have a Vmware machine for.Net application testing. Current setup: Host OS: win7 Guest OS: Right now the guest OS is Win Xp Pro x64, which runs great with just 1 gigabyte of RAM and 10 gigs of disk space. * This part can be skipped * As I said, there was a program that I needed to test, but unfortunately, by default, Vmware installs crappy display drivers(called SVGA II) on XP machines and there is NO way to upgrade them! This resulted in my program's error (the program used SlimDX (DirectX wrapper) to do some stuff..). Eventually I found out that display drivers most certainly is the problem. For example, Windows 7 virtual machine uses SVGA 3D drivers and I have NO problems running my SlimDX-based program. Now, regarding Windows Server 2008! Apparently, WDDM driver is supported by WS2008, which means that I'll be able to install SVGA 3D and to test my DX apps. * end of skip * The questions are: Will WS2008 be as smooth with just 1 gig of RAM just like Win XP was? Will 10 gigs of HDD be enough? Or the server requires more? Will I be able to install .Net ver. 4 on WS2008? Are there any limitations that I need to be aware of as a .Net programmer? EDIT: I was hoping that WS2008 is XP-based, not Vista-vased/W7-based. In comparison, W7 virtual machine with 2 gigs of RAM and 2 proc cores nearly kills my Host OS. Whereas, WinXp runs extremely fast even with 1 core and 1 gig of RAM. That's the main reason why I want to try WS2008..

• In Windows 7 is there a way to login from any user account and see the same workspace and be able to use the running programs of another user?

  Our group has a number of Test Stands with PCs that are currently being accessed with a single group login. It has been sent from on high that this is not the way to do things for security reasons and we all agree. However. Multiple team members from around the world log into these Test Stands and need to be able to access programs that have been run from what would be different user profiles if we were to no longer have a single common login. Is there a way to have a common workspace such that when different users login, they will be able to see and interact with all running applications as if they were using a common login? Applications that we run link to and monopolize hardware resources connected to the PC and it is time consuming to restart and reload settings every time a new user logs in. Even if the program did not monopolize the hardware many of these programs are resource intensive and require a large portion of each machine's RAM to run, so trying to run the application again when it is already running from multiple user accounts would quickly consume all system resources. Simple Example: I open a chrome browser while logged into our pc. I then logout and another team member remotes in and should be able to see my open browser and be able to interact with it as if he were the one who opened it. Any alternative process flows or solutions from someone who has gone through a similar transition would be appreciated. This is not a request for how to give all users access to the ability to run a program, but it is the request for how to allow all users access to interact with running applications that have been started by other users and need to be interacted with as if the new user started and has control of the application.

• Very, very simple asp.net page takes forever to load

  I've got a page that couldn't be more simple: <%@ Page Trace="true" %> <html> <head></head> <body> <h1>Hello World</h1> <a href="/OtherPage.aspx"/>Other Page</a> <p><%=DateTime.Now.ToString()%> </body> </html> ... but it takes forever to load. There is no database or web service call to slow it down. The trace command reveals that the time from Begin PreInot to End Render is .000049 seconds, but the page itself takes several seconds to load. It is a new web site I just created for this test, and just has a web.config & two test files. The only thing in the web.config is access control: <authorization><allow users="domain\me" /><deny users = "*"/></authorization> What else could IIS be doing with all of that time?

  I'm running a Java application with an Oracle 10g. I've discovered kind of a race condition that leads to an inifite long waiting time for an UPDATE statement. To solve this situation I'd like to find out what this statement is waiting for (locks on certain tables caused by statement xy etc.). I tried to use the Oracle Enterprise Manager which has found this situation as well but it doesn't tell my the reason for the wait.

  Hi all I have (just like the rest) inherited some struts 1 code. I have had need to add a few more pages to this project. What I cannot figure out is how to map several distinct but similarly natured input elements to the my ActionForm. Let me elaborate. I create a new <Input> element dynamically as the user inputs more and more items (I use the YUI autocomplete form element and for each entered input I add it as an input element to my form and draw a new YUI autocomplete - complex sounding, I know) So... • Sonar Analysis crashing with default configuration in Maven

  I'm starting to experiment with Sonar, and having trouble. I'm running everything on the same Red Hat Linux server, against Java 1.6.10. I launched the server with "bin/linux-x86-32" (the JVM is 32-bit). The sonar.log shows no SEVERE or ERROR and one WARNING, that I'm using the default Derby database (I'll fix that once I get things running at all). I am trying to build a Maven project that builds a JAR. I made no Sonar-specific changes (other than one described below). I can run "mvn clean install" with no problem.   Thanks to Max in this post, I made an horizontal menu. But now I'm trying to make an overlay menu, i I don't find how to do that... Let's see what i got first. The only problem is my menu isn't overlaying my map, it pushes the content up. I tried with the menu manager like in your first response, resizing the content manager but it is the same result. Max gave me the link http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1497073/blackberry-fields-layout-animation to do so, but I really don't know how to use it to make it work in my project... Thank you for your help! UPDATE This works great, it's what I wanted. However, I still have a problem because I'm under 4.5. So first in the MenuHostManager constructor, I deleted the USE_ALL_HEIGHT and change setPositionChild(mMenuManager, 0, Display.getHeight() - mMenuManager.getPreferredHeight()); like this to have the menu at the bottom of the screen. It worked. Then, instead of drawing my bitmaps, I did this: Bitmap nBitmap = EncodedImage.getEncodedImageResource("menu" + i + ".png").getBitmap(); BitmapButtonField button = new BitmapButtonField(nBitmap, nBitmap); And it worked too (no rollover for now, later). So it is great! I also overwrite the Paint method of my CyclicHFManager to have a background color, because I can't use the BorderFactory and BackgroundFactory... My menu bar has a color for now so it's ok. Then, because of these 2 classes missing, in my BitmapButtonField I had to delete the 2 setBorder functions that change the borders. And now i have my buttons pretty big like normal buttons with borders... How can I make the same effect as the setBorder functions under 4.5? (BTW, setBorder is not working under 4.5 too...).
