  How do one proceed if I want to have 3 Operating Systems: Windows 7, Ubuntu, Debian plus a swap partion, all in all 4 partitions? Lets say I have 2 disks, each 640 GB and make room - 300 GB for Windows 7, 160 GB Ubuntu, 160 GB Debian and the rest for swap 20 GB. Where do I make these partitions, do I first make one big raid array 1 in BIOS and then partition when Windows 7 is installed or do I already in BIOS make these 4 partitions?

  I'm using linux(ubuntu), there's a linux(fedora) server, that I can log in with ssh, is there any possibility //server/dir /mnt/my_mount_dir cifs username=loginpassword=11111,uid=1000,iocharset=utf8,codepage=unicode,unicode 0 0 As far as I'm concerned, this construction uses SMB as primary tool. Is there any possibility to use NFS or any another approach, because in case of SMB it tends to have permission, symlink collisions. PS It would be great if you also provide some links. Thanks.

• No device file for partition on logical volume (Linux LVM)

  I created a logical volume (scandata) containing a single ext3 partition. It is the only logical volume in its volume group (case4t). Said volume group is comprised by 3 physical volumes, which are three primary partitions on a single block device (/dev/sdb). When I created it, I could mount the partition via the block device /dev/mapper/case4t-scandatap1. Since last reboot the aforementioned block device file has disappeared. It may be of note -- I'm not sure -- that my superior (a college professor) had prompted this reboot by running sudo chmod -R [his name] /usr/bin, which obliterated all suid in its path, preventing the both of us from sudo-ing. That issue has been (temporarily) rectified via this operation. And /dev/case4t/scandata (no partition number) cannot be mounted: $sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/case4t/scandata /mnt/new mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/case4t-scandata, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so All I get on syslog is: [170059.538137] VFS: Can't find ext3 filesystem on dev dm-0. • EMERGENCY - Major Problems After Perl Module Installed via WHM

  I attempted to install the perl module Net::Twitter::Role::API::Lists using WHM and after doing so my whole site came down. It seems that something that was updated with the install isn't functioning correctly and since our website it written in Perl none of our site scripts will run. In almost 8 years of working with Perl I've never had any issues arise after installing a perl module so I have no idea how to even start troubleshooting. The error I see when trying to compile any of our Perl scripts is below. I'd appreciate any advice on what might be wrong and steps on how I can go about resolve it. Thanks in advance for your help! • Is there an Android remote app compatible with LibreOffice Impress under Ubuntu?

  I have an upcoming presentation I want to make in LibreOffice Impress on my Ubuntu 12.10 laptop. I was wondering if I could get ahold of an Android app which would act like a remote control, allowing me to switch between slides from my phone over WiFi without having to stay near the laptop (I've been told I need to move around more during my presentations). A quick look on the Google Play store seemed to turn up a handful of PowerPoint remote apps for Windows or maybe Mac. I also took a look at Can an Android phone control Ubuntu like a remote?, but that seems more for controlling an Ubuntu media center. Is there anything which will work with LibreOffice Impress on Ubuntu? My phone is a Samsung Galaxy Precedent on Straight Talk, running Android 2.2.2 (latest available version from the carrier). It's not rooted, and there's not much memory on it either, so the smaller and simpler the app the better. Also, it has to be free because I currently don't have a means to pay for an app I may/may not like.

But the integrity test of the USB stick has failed and I do not see why. These are the steps I have made: Download of the 12.04.1 Alternate install ISO-file for 64-bit PC (ubuntu-12.04.1-alternate-amd64.iso) from http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04.1/, as well as the MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256 hash files and related PGP signatures Verification of the data integrity of the ISO-file using the MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256 hash files, after having verified the hash files using the related PGP signature files (see e.g. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToSHA256SUM and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VerifyIsoHowto) Creation of a bootable USB stick using Ubuntu's Startup Disk Creator program (see http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu) Boot of my computer using the newly made 12.04.1 Alternate install on USB stick Selection of the option "Check disc for defects" (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck) Steps 1, 2, 3 and 4 went without any problem or error messages.   I've been having trouble with getting graphics drivers to work that support OpenGL 2.0. I've had some luck with the Ubuntu drivers, however these only support OpenGL 1.3. I thought I would document the methods that I have tried both to see if anyone else has ideas, and to save time for people with a similar problem. System details: Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) 64 bit Kernel Linux 2.6.32-44-generic GNOME 2.30.2 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670 Attempted Methods The methods I have tried are: 1. Installing Proprietary Drivers using the "Hardware Drivers" (Jockey) GUI This GUI offers an "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" however any attempts to install it result in a "Sorry, installation of this driver failed" error. The log file is here. There is an Ask Ubuntu question that covers this scenario, and notes that there is a known bug with Jockey. 2. Installing the Proprietary Drivers manually The answer to the question above linked to this wiki page, which gives instructions for installing Catalyst 12.6. This supported hardware list states that the 3670 is not supported in 12.6, and 12.4 must be used. This is somewhat confusing, as AMD's website suggests that the 12.6 driver should be installed for the 3670. There have been user reports that R600 (the GPU inside the 3670 card) doesn't work with 12.6, so I'm sticking with 12.4. I'm following these instructions to install the proprietary drivers on Lucid. I downloaded the 12.4 driver from the AMD website. Building the package worked fine, generating the fglrx, fglrx-dev, fglrx-amdcccle, and fglrx-modaliases deb packages successfully. • Trying to format drive fails

  since I will be doing an internship for which i need to use Windows software, I have decided to ruin my day trying to remove my Ubuntu 12.04, install Win XP SP3 (since the DualBoot theme from ubuntu suggests to first install Windows and then Ubuntu, for problems with the bootloader if you do it the other way around) and then reinstall Ubuntu 12.04 since I would like to keep using it as my primary operating system, using WinXP exclusively for the internship. Other than that, I would like to have a partition for the data, which can be used by both Ubuntu and Windows. So now, I have used the disk utility run from an ubuntu-live cd to format my drive with Master Boot Record (being conscious of the fact that this way I will lose all my data, which I have saved on an external drive before, and that my Ubuntu won't work anymore afterwards), creating partitions for Windows (NTFS), personal data (FAT, since as far as I know both Ubuntu and Windows can deal with this), a Swap partition for Linux, and one partition for Ubuntu (ext4); trying to install Win XP from cd gives me a blue screen, which stops the setup and telling me to remove all recently installed drives and to run CHKDSK. So I thought, that maybe Windows doesn't like pre-partitioned drives for its installation and thus I need to re-format my hard drive in order to have a completely "new" drive, which I can then, during the Windows-installation, partition in order to create the partitions I need. Trying to do this, though, the disk-utility run from the live-CD gives me this warning: Error creating partition table: helper exited with exit code 1: In part_create_partition_table: device_file=/dev/sda, scheme=0 got it got disk committed to disk BLKRRPART ioctl failed for /dev/sda: Device or resource busy I do not understand why it tells me that the hard-drive is busy, because, as stated above, I am doing all this from a live-CD. Thus, my questions are: How can I resolve the error given by the disk utility? Does it make sense to use four partitions in the way mentioned above? And if not so, which partitions should I create? Can I, theoretically, partition my drive from an Ubuntu live-cd in order to create the partitions I want and to install first Windows and then Ubuntu? Thanks for any help, David

  I had problems while installing ubuntu 12.04 on a samsung laptop, the problem is the AHCI sysmtem, after a lot of searching, I found that this is almost impossible to "fix" and the only way i found is too much work. I want to install Ubuntu in the 110GB free partition of my hard drive, along with windows. I have a 150GB Windows partition, a 200GB documents partition, and I want to use 110 GB for Ubuntu. The problem is that with the liveCD the installer and gparted shows that my entire hard drive is unallocated (the problem of AHCI). The only way to fix this is to do a lot of work, with a lot of risk, so the question is whether I can install Ubuntu without using either the LiveCD or Wubi.

I've looked into ways of watching Netflix on Ubuntu, but it seems the DRM basically makes that impossible (Moonlight project says unless Netflix drops the DRM their Silverlight replacement will not allow watching of Netflix). But then I realized, hey what if I stream Netflix to another computer running say, OS X, then somehow redirect it (using Unix magic) to my Ubuntu machine? Is this possible?

• Can't launch Oneiric x64 instance on Eucalyptus

  EDIT: after many hours, I've found out that the problem has nothing to do with Eucalyptus. It looks like the image is buggy. Very, very buggy. More details in the end. I didn't manage to fix it, and I will file a bug. EDIT 2: I managed to fix it, it apparently works. I have a 4-machine cluster running Ubuntu Server Natty (11.04) x64. I've installed "Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud" from the installtion CD (then updated it) on each of these machines. The cloud seems to work fine, I have lots of virtual machines running Natty servers on them. Now I'd like to run Oneiric in a virtual machine, but somehow I can't. I downloaded Oneiric's (x64) image from http://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/oneiric/current/, published it (uec-publish-tarball oneiric-server-cloudimg-amd64.tar.gz oneiric-server-cloudimg-amd64) exactly as I did with Natty, then tried to launch an instance (euca-run-instances -n 1 -k my-key -t m1.small -z my-cloud emi-XXXXXXXX) using Oneiric's image, but the instance is not able to boot. Very, very buggy. The first problem is that the Kernel in the image is a -generic kernel, while I suppose it should be a -virtual one. I chrooted into the image, removed the -generic packages, replaced it with the -virtual ones. Then I extracted the new kernel (and replaced the original one (-generic) that came with the tarball) because I need it when I publish and launch an image with Eucalyptus. The problem described above was solved. But then, the console started showing this: mount: mount point ext4 does not exist If you check the /etc/fstab file in the image, it says: LABEL=cloudimg-rootfs ext4 defaults 0 1 Damnt, where's my mount point? Note that it is missing /proc as well. Well, when you think it is over, you will notice that your instance will have no network connectivity. Let's check /etc/network/interface: # interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8) auto lo iface lo inet loopback Oh my! It is missing eth0... here I stopped. I can't take no more. I give up. Looks like Canonical has just forgotten to properly set up this image. At first, I though: "have I downloaded a server image by mistake?", but no, I double checked. It is really the cloud image, it has even "cloud-init" installed (which is not, by default, on server images). They just forgot to prepare it. I will file a bug (and reference it here once this is done), and hope they fix it soon! EDIT 2: it looks like the network configuration was the last thing missing. I decided to test it with the fixes above, and it booted properly! However, I haven't got the slightest idea if the image is now good to go...

• Permission denied on /dev/xvdf despite sudo?

  I'm trying to get a stream off port 9999 and write to /dev/xvdf. I'm using Amazon EC2 with the Ubuntu 11.10 server image. By default I log in as 'ubuntu' which has sudo privileges. • Why does Ubuntu only detect one USB LAN adapters at a time?

  I try to connect real switch with my computer for an exam preparation, for this purpose I need more than one LAN cards, and there is only one built in LAN card in my computer. So, to get more LAN cards, I bought 4 USB Ethernet adapters (as I have 4 usb ports in may laptop 2 usb 2.0 ports, 2 usb 3.0 ports). When I plug these adapters in my computer Ubuntu only detects one LAN card from 2.0 usb ports, and one LAN card from 3.0 ports. And sometimes detects only one USB LAN from all the usb ports. Actually the real problem is Ubuntu shows these USB LAN adapters in the "lsusb", but does not list them in "ifconfig".   This is my second attempt at installing Ubuntu. In my first attempt, I selected "download updates" and "install third-party components"; in my second attempt, I deselected both. Still experiencing the same problem. In my first attempt at installing Ubuntu, after the installation stuck at "Retrieving file 43 of 105", I selected "skip" and the installation completed. After I started to run the OS, I received a notification that language support was incomplete. When I tried to update it, the Ubuntu Software Centre updating process hung on "waiting for jockey-backend to exit", seemingly indefinitely. At that point, I decided to reinstall the system (since the whole process is only supposed to take 45 minutes or less), but, as I mentioned above my results were the same. I'm new to Ubuntu. Any advice? Where are the files (including file 43) being retrieved from? Online or from the ubuntu installation iso? I have searched many forums for an answer to this problem, and have seen others with the same issue but I haven't found a solution. Thanks.

• Booting sequence. Ubuntu 12.04 installation and cohabitation with former OSes

  I am on the brink of installing Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pengolin on the first primary partition of my hard-drive. (A day in History for me since I had always kept a MS windows at this first place). But I have some fears: This is my last computer available (In the past I used to have 2 or even 3 machines so I could always un/plug HDs for recovery operations and rescue) The current booting sequence is not straight forard. So as to explain the boot sequence let me briefly sum-up the history of this laptop computer. It was a dedicated Windows Vista computer. 1st and only Primary partition. Then I added Windows 7 (on the 2nd primary partition) letting the Windows Vista Boot Loader manage the boot sequence. Then I added Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx on the 1st sub-partition of the Extended Partitionm asking Grub to be the boot loader. But when I ask Grub to launch windows it launches the Vista BootLoader that manages the choice betzeen Vista and 7. So in theory Grub is on the MasterBootRecord - though I understand where the Vista BootLoader remains. Now, I will no longer use the Ubuntu 10.04 ( on extended partition) and also the Windows vista (on the first primary partition). I will install Ubuntu 12.04 on the First Primary, asking it to install a new bootloader. I want to keep the Windows 7 that is already on the Second Primary partition. And I want it to be loaded by the Ubuntu Boot loader(I don4t knoz zhich is included in this version)... And I am afraid the last point will not work.
