• Updating NVIDIA drivers from 295.40: What will happen to TwinView?

  Right now, I have the NVIDIA proprietary drivers enabled without the Ubuntu-X repo, so the driver version is 295.40 (which is on the official Ubuntu repo) instead of the current 304.64 for my card, but I want to update to the current (using the Ubuntu-X repo). From what I heard, after 302.xx, NVIDIA started supporting RandR and removed TwinView. My question is, I have TwinView enabled for two monitors. If I update to the new version, what will happen to my TwinView settings? Will there be any extra work to do to migrate to the new driver?

• Sprite.js surface background

  I'm making a tile-based game using Sprite.js. It is not easy to redraw every tile each frame, so I tried to make a scrolling surface background. There is an example here http://batiste.dosimple.ch/sprite.js/tests/test_scrolling.html The example works, but it seems like ScrollingSurface.update is buggy or there is something I'm missing. What I tried to do is to draw 5x5 tiles and after 5 seconds draw another 5x5 tiles near the first ones. But it draws only the first ones. And surface.update() only updates the position of surface. Here is my code https://github.com/Sektoid/sprite.js/blob/master/tests/test_scrolling.html (You need also to set this.divider = 1.0 in scrolling.js to avoid drawing the same tiles 4 times.) There aren't any sprite.js-forums like with the other sprite- and game-engines have, so I'm asking here.

• My computter wont shutdown

  If I try to shutdown my computer it simply takes me back to the login-screen. I looked around and found : Type in terminal: 1. sudo gedit /etc/default/grub 2. Find the line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" 3. Change this to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=force" 4. Save the file and close the file. 5. Finally, in terminal: sudo update-grub but now there is a new problem. if I try step 5 it says: myname@ubuntu:~$ sudo update-grub [sudo] password for myname: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?). myname@ubuntu:~$ I am new whit linux and dont know what to do.

• Should the networking of my game be a component or a service?

  I am working on a windows game and I am trying to understand the XNA GameComponents and GameServices classes and use. From what I understand about a component is that it has an Update method that gets call in every frame, and a service can be referenced from other components if needed. So the way I think a network component would work is that in its Update method it would receive and send data. It probably makes sense to receive the network data once per frame, but it doesn't for sending it. Shouldn't the game send its own updates to others the moment it has it to cut down on lag?

  I'm getting 4 sec delay when sending objects over UDP. Working on small game and trying to implement multiplayer. For now just trying to synchronize movements of 2 balls on the screen. StartingPoint.java is my server(first player), that receiving serialized objects (coordinates). SecondPlayer.java is client that sending serialized objects to server. When I'm moving my first object it appears 4 seconds later on different screen. • Ubuntu 12.04 Nvidia GTX 460 video card installation

  Currently testing Ubuntu 12.04 x64 for our development team. After upgrading from 11.10 I've been having video card issues. I'm using Nvidia GeForce GTX 460. When ever I try to launch Nvidia X server I get the following error message. You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run nvidia-xconfig as root), and restart the X server. I've tried running sudo nvidia-xconfig multiple times and rebooting with no success. I've also tried getting the nvidia-current driver from the x-swat repo sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current Followed again by a reboot did nothing for me but knock my resolution down to 800x600 Finally I've tried sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-video-all sudo reboot Does anyone have any thoughts or directions they could point me in? To the best of my understanding my video card is suppose to be supported.

• Synchronizing (updating) published files

  How can I update a published file and maintain the same URL? After saving an update of a published file on my desktop, it will automatically "synchronise" with the corresponding files at UbuntuOne (and it does). Problem is that the "new file", actually the updated file with the same name, is no longer published. Pressing the publish button results is a new URL. I now have to mail new URL's and change embedded links, as old URL will result in a failure to find the updated file (or indeed any file). I am not sure if it is a bug or a design flaw (maybe intentional?), but it seems strange to me.

  Hello, I am getting the following error when trying to update an object using nhibernate. I am attempting to update a field which is a foreign key. Any thoughts why I might be getting this error? • Process: Unable to start service com.google.android.gms.checkin.CheckinService with Intent

  I'm trying to build a Google map application but keep receiving this in my LogCat. I have all the permissions and meta-data set in my manifest, but am still dumbfounded by this error. Have looked everywhere on SO for this specific error but found nothing relating to com.google.android.gms.checkin A little bit about my structural hierarchy. MainActivity extends ActionBarActivity with three tabs underneath actionbar. Each tab has it's own fragment. On the gMapFragment I create a GPSTrack object from my GPSTrack class which extends Service and implements LocationListener. The problem is that when I start the application I get this message: I have all my libraries imported properly and I even added the google-play-services.jar into my libs folder. I also installed Google Play Services APKs through CMD onto my emulator. Furthermore the LocationManager lm = = (LocationManager) mContext.getSystemService(LOCATION_SERVICE); in my GPSTrack class always returns null. Why is this and how can I fix these issues? • OnSelectedIndexChange only fires on second click when using custom page validation script

  Okay.. this is hard to explain, so here it goes. I have an update panel which contains a number of controls. The update panel is triggered by the OnSelectedIndexChanged event of a dropdownlist called: ddlUSCitizenshipStatus. It works as expected when I selected a new item. However, if I leave ddlUSCitizenshipStatus with the default value, and then click "submit" button on the page, the requiredfieldvalidators say there is an error on ddlUSCitizenshipStatus (which it should, as I never selected a value). So I then choose a value, the error message goes away on ddlUSCitizenshipStatus, however the updatepanel does not refresh. I've debugged this locally and the OnSelectedIndexChanged event for ddlUSCitizenshipStatus does not fire. If I choose an item in the ddlUSCitizenshipStatus list a second time, the OnSelectedIndexChanged server event fires and the update panel refreshes and works as expected. The issue is, I have to select an item in ddlUSCitizenshipStatus twice, after failed validation, before the updatepanel it's sitting in updates.   hi, I had hard time to figure out why I've been getting "unknown action" error message when I was do some editing: Unknown action No action responded to 11. Actions: bin, create, destroy, edit, index, new, observe_new, show, tag, update, and vote you can see that Rails did mention each action in the above list - update. And in my form, I did specify action = "update".   I'm working with eBay's LMS (Large Merchant Services) and kept running into the error: org.xml.sax.SAXException: SimpleDeserializer encountered a child element, which is NOT expected, in something it was trying to deserialize. After alot of trial and error I traced the problem down. It turns out this works: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <BulkDataExchangeRequests xmlns="urn:ebay:apis:eBLBaseComponents"> <Header> <Version>583</Version> <SiteID>0</SiteID> </Header> <AddFixedPriceItemRequest xmlns="urn:ebay:apis:eBLBaseComponents"> while this (what I've been sending) doesn't: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <BulkDataExchangeRequests xmlns="urn:ebay:apis:eBLBaseComponents"> <Header> <Version>583</Version> <SiteID>0</SiteID> </Header> <AddFixedPriceItemRequest> The difference is the xml namespace attribute on the AddFixedPriceItemRequest . All of my XML is currently being marshalled via JAXB and I'm not sure what is the best way to go about adding a second xmlns attribute to a different element in my file. So that's the question. The BulkDataExchange probably takes the XML payload, breaks it up, and send the pieces out to the Merchant or Trading API. The inner pieces of the payload then do not have the namespace and the get the error. This is a guess on my part but I wouldn't be surprised if this is what was going on behind the scenes.   I'm having difficulty with an architectural decision for my C# XNA game. The basic entity in the world, such as a tree, zombie, or the player, is represented as a GameObject. Each GameObject is composed of at least a GameObjectController, GameObjectModel, and GameObjectView. These three are enough for simple entities, like inanimate trees or rocks. However, as I try to keep the functionality as factored out as possible, the inheritance begins to feel unwieldy. Syntactically, I'm not even sure how best to accomplish my goals. Here is the GameObjectController: public class GameObjectController { protected GameObjectModel model; protected GameObjectView view; public GameObjectController(GameObjectManager gameObjectManager) { this.gameObjectManager = gameObjectManager; model = new GameObjectModel(this); view = new GameObjectView(this); } public GameObjectManager GameObjectManager { get { return gameObjectManager; } } public virtual GameObjectView View { get { return view; } } public virtual GameObjectModel Model { get { return model; } } public virtual void Update(long tick) { } } I want to specify that each subclass of GameObjectController will have accessible at least a GameObjectView and GameObjectModel. If subclasses are fine using those classes, but perhaps are overriding for a more sophisticated Update() method, I don't want them to have to duplicate the code to produce those dependencies. So, the GameObjectController constructor sets those objects up. However, some objects do want to override the model and view. This is where the trouble comes in. • Data Warehouse ETL slow - change primary key in dimension?

  I have a working MySQL data warehouse that is organized as a star schema and I am using Talend Open Studio for Data Integration 5.1 to create the ETL process. I would like this process to run once per day. I have estimated that one of the dimension tables (dimUser) will have approximately 2 million records and 23 columns. I created a small test ETL process in Talend that worked, but given the amount of data that may need to be updated daily, the current performance will not cut it. It takes the ETL process four minutes to UPDATE or INSERT 100 records to dimUser. If I assumed a linear relationship between the count of records and the amount of time to UPDATE or INSERT, then there is no way the ETL can finish in 3-4 hours (my hope), let alone one day. Since I'm unfamiliar with Java, I wrote the ETL as a Python script and ran into the same problem. Although, I did discover that if I did only INSERT, the process went much faster. I am pretty sure that the bottleneck is caused by the UPDATE statements. The primary key in dimUser is an auto-increment integer. My friend suggested that I scrap this primary key and replace it with a multi-field primary key (in my case, 2-3 fields). Before I rip the test data out of my warehouse and change the schema, can anyone provide suggestions or guidelines related to the design of the data warehouse the ETL process how realistic it is to have an ETL process INSERT or UPDATE a few million records each day will my friend's suggestion significantly help If you need any further information, just let me know and I'll post it. Since, from a business perspective, I want to keep aware of potential fraudulent activity (say for 200 days a user is associated with state X and then the next day they are associated with state Y - they could have moved or their account could have been compromised), so that is why geographic data is kept. The field id_B may have a few distinct values of id_A associated with it, but I am interested in knowing distinct (id_A, id_B) tuples. In the context of this information, my friend suggested that something like (id_A, id_B, zip_code) be the primary key. For the large majority of daily ETL processes (80%), I only expect the following fields to be updated for existing records: field_10 - field_14, last_update, and run_id (this field is a foreign key to my etlLog table and is used for ETL auditing purposes).

• Android "java.lang.noclassdeffounderror" exception

  Hello, I have a android webservice client application. I am trying to use the java standard WS library support. I have stripped the application down to the minimum, as shown below, to try and isolate the issue. I have included the java SE javax libraries in the java build pasth. When the android application tries to create the "service" object I get a "java.lang.noclassdeffounderror" exception. The two classes tempConvertSoap and TempConvet() are generated by wsimport. I am also using several libraries from javax.jws.. and javax.xml.ws.. Of course the application compiles without error and loads correctly. I know the application is running becouse my "try/catch" routine is successfully catching the error and printing it out. I have taken this same application and created a standard java client application and it works fine -- of course with all of the android stuff taken out. What would be a good debug strategy? What methods and techniques would you recommend I try and isolate the problem? I am thinking that there is some sort of Dalvik VM incompatibility that is causing the TempConvert class not to load. TempConvert is an interface class that references a lot of very tricky webservice attributes. Any help with debug strategies would be gladly appreciated. Thanks for the help, Steve
