• How to run multiple distros using lvm

  I've seen quite a few posts around about running multiple distros but not sure they apply to using LVM (and without Windows). I'm using a machine that's about 3 years old. Setup: Intel Core i7 2.8GHz 8GB Ram 1TB SATA HDD At this point, I'd like to install 12.10 and Mint 14, leaving the option open to install additional distros down the road. I could be way off, but I'm thinking about creating at least 2 primary /boot partitions (1 for 12.10 and 1 for Mint) and another partition for LVM leaving room for additional /boot partitions. Then creating a VG and separate LVs for Ubuntu 12.10 and Linux Mint 14. I understand I can share partitions between the 2 installs, but I'm only using this for testing and I have tons of space to play with. LVM seemed logical considering I may want to install and test additional distros. I guess I could share the /swap partition across the board without problems, right? I'm unclear about GRUB2. How do I handle the bootloader situation? Install 12.10 and get it running then make changes to grub.cfg after installing Mint? And do I not install GRUB for Mint or do I install it in a different location? Any guidance would be appreciated.

• Can I use a Google Appliance/Mini to crawl and index sites I don't own?

  Maybe this is a stupid question, but... I am working with this company and they said they needed to get "permission" to crawl other people's sites. They have a Google Search Appliance And some Google Minis and want to point them at other sites to aggregate content. The end result will be something like a targeted search engine. (All the indexed sites relate to a specific topic) The only thing they will be doing is: Indexing Content from the other sites/domains Providing search functionality on their own site that searches the indexed content (like Google, displaying summaries and not the full content) The search results will provide links back to the original content Their intent is not malicious in nature, and is to provide a single site/resource for people to reference on their given topic. Is there anything illegal or fishy about this process?

It also confirms for me something I've heard other people saying too: the JavaFX WebView component is a perfect low threshold entry point for Swing developers feeling their way into the world of JavaFX.

• PowerShell create new Azure VM from uploaded disk (not image)

  I have a VHD in Azure storage. That VHD is configured as an OS disk through a command like the following: Add-AzureDisk -DiskName $newCode -MediaLocation "http://$script:accountName.blob.core.windows.net/$newCode/$sourceVhdName.vhd" ` -Label $newCode -OS "Windows" I would like to create a new VM pointing at that disk. From what I can tell if I was doing this with an image I would do something like: New-AzureVMConfig -Name $newCode -InstanceSize $instanceSize ` -MediaLocation "http://$script:accountName.blob.core.windows.net/$newCode/$sourceVhdName.vhd" -ImageName $newCode ` | Add-AzureProvisioningConfig -Windows -Password $adminPassword ` | New-AzureVM -ServiceName $newCode However this is wrong for me because I don't have an image - I have a configured VHD that is not sysprepped and can't be. How can I create the VM in PowerShell to point at the existing disk like I can through the portal?

• Apache SSL for login and NON-SSL for everything else (.htacces)

  Hey I've almost figured it out on my own but there's something I'm missing. I want to set a couple of directories and files to require SSL and everything else that's not related to those files and dirs to point back to http. The first condition works perfect - whenever I access login.php or /admin/ it points to https. But the second one doesn't... Where have I mistaken ? Thanks in advance!

• Linux script to find time difference and send an email if need

  Hi, I'm not an expert in writing shell scripts but also I'm looking for a very specific solution. OS: CentOS release 5.2 (Final) I've a Java standalone which keeps writing (all System.out.println) to a log file. For some unknown reason, this Java standalone stops working at some point of time in my server and eventually logs writing also stops working. I want to have a script which checks the last modified date & time of the log file with current date & time in the server. If the time difference exceeds more than 5 minutes, I want to send an email immediately to my recipients list. This way I'll come to know when this Java standalone has stopped working. I'll move this script to crontab and make it run for every 1 minute, so that this whole process is automated. Log file location: /usr/local/logs/standalone.log

• sp_releaseapplock timeout expired cause?

  I've been using a combination of sp_getapplock and sp_releaseapplock for some custom application locking purposes for years now with success and just the last few days I've started to get some timeout expired errors on a sp_releaseapplock which is a bit puzzling. When listing the current locks, there's less than a dozen of these active, and the rest of the dedicated server is way underutilized at the moment (less than 100 batches/sec with a mutli-processor, 32GB Ram, higher end machine.) Is there a specific resource to be monitored that may point me in the right direction for determing why such a lightweight operation is timing out? This is called within a stored proc with a timeout of 120 seconds which seems to be amazingly long for this operation to timeout on. SQL 2000 SP4 running on Windows 2003 Server. • Getting the PC speaker to beep

  There has been much written on getting the beep sound from Ubuntu releases over the years. Example: fixing the beep My needs are slightly different in that I do not want to ensure sound card beeps are functioning. Instead, I want PC speaker beeps, the kind produced by the original built-in speaker because I believe they will produce less CPU load. I have confirmed that my computer has the PC speaker by unplugging the external speakers and shutting down Ubuntu. At some point in the shutdown and restart process a beep is heard even though the external speakers have no power. I have tried the following: In /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, turn these lines into comments: #blacklist snd_pcsp #blacklist pcspkr In .bashrc /usr/bin/xset b on /usr/bin/xset b 100 Enable in the gnome terminal: Edit Profile Prefs General Terminal Bell Ensure no "mute" selections in: System Prefs Sound various tabs (uncheck them all). Select "Enable window and button sounds" in: System Prefs Sound Sound Effects In gconf-editor desktop gnome sound, select the three sound check boxes. In gconf-editor apps metacity general select the audible bell check box. Still I get no PC speaker beeps when I send code 7 to the console via my Java program or use echo -e '\a' on the bash command line. What else should I try? Update Since my goal is to minimize load on the CPU, here is a comparison of elapsed times. Each test is for 100,000 iterations. • Create an AWS AMI for Ubuntu with GUI which automatically launches web browser

  I've got an ubuntu AMI setup with ubuntu desktop installed and Chrome installed and set to boot on load (via the startup programmes menu within the ubuntu desktop) I've created an image of this AMI, but any time I launch a new instance running this, the Ubuntu GUI doesn't seem to load, until I SSH into the machine, enable VNC and then connect via Chicken VNC to the machine. At that point, the desktop appears to load + starts the browser. I really need the machine to boot and the browser to load without having to VNC into the machine.. Any help would be appreciated.

• Ubuntu Slow - What architecture does the Windows Installer install?

  I feel absolutely limited by using Windows, and I need to switch to a Unix environment. I once installed Red Hat on my lappie (screen + external monitor setup; 4GB ram; x64; runs fast) and it worked fine, but I saw that the computer cluster that is the birthplace of my unix knowledge switched to Ubuntu, so naturally I follow. To the point. When I installed Ubuntu onto my machine via the Windows Installer, it ran quite slow. Opening Firefox takes about 8-9 seconds, it freezes up often, unable to handle its own background processes. I saw in a thread that, perhaps, it is running slow because the Windows Installer is installing an x64 version. Of course, my computer has had no performance issues in the past(except that time with the trojans but you know, know one is perfect ;) ) Anyways, I uninstalled Ubuntu, freeing up the max allocated memory it took up, and continue to be sad, trapped in my MS world with only a buggy Cygwin, any assistance is greatly appreciated! :) Thanks ~Ben

• Get 100 highest numbers from an infinite list

  One of my friend was asked this interview question - "There is a constant flow of numbers coming in from some infinite list of numbers out of which you need to maintain a datastructure as to return the top 100 highest numbers at any given point of time. Assume all the numbers are whole numbers only." This is simple, you need to keep a sorted list in descending order and keep a track on lowest number in that list. If new number obtained is greater than that lowest number then you have to remove that lowest number and insert the new number in sorted list as required. Then question was extended - "Can you make sure that the Order for insertion should be O(1)? Is it possible?" As far as I knew, even if you add a new number to list and sort it again using any sort algorithm, it would by best be O(logn) for quicksort (I think). So my friend told it was not possible. But he was not convinced, he asked to maintain any other data structure rather than a list. I thought of balanced Binary tree, but even there you will not get the insertion with order of 1. So the same question I have too now. Wanted to know if there is any such data structure which can do insertion in Order of 1 for above problem or it is not possible at all.

  I run a small company composed of only 2 developers. For one of our clients we are building a very big application, whose development has gone on for 1.5 years. Now this client has found an important sponsorship, and they are organizing some events related to this project, so we have a deadline in 2 months and we can't miss it. We are thinking of adding a new developer to the team, and I am wondering what we can do to help his integration. This is the situation: We are approaching the threshhold of Brooks's law, the point when adding new developers will be counter-productive. The application is relatively well designed, but the implementation is chaotic in some points (especially older code). There are unit tests only for more recent code. When this project started, we didn't have the habit of doing tests. Documentation and comments are incomplete. The application is both large and complex. The client has written down almost every detail about his project, in a very clear and "programmer-friendly" way. Is it a good idea to add a person now? If so, what can we do in order to help the new developer integrate into the team?

• Problem inserting pre-ordered values to quadtree

  There's this string containing B, W and G (standing for black, white and gray). It defines the pre-ordered path of the quadtree I want to build. I wrote this method for filling the QuadTree class I also wrote but it doesn't work, it inserts correctly until it reaches a point in the algorithm it needs to "return". I use math quadrants convention order for insertion, such as northeast, northwest, southwest and southeast. • Advise on a 240,000 sqft outdoor wireless network

  I would be very appreciative of some advice in the purchase of equipment to provide a wireless network that covers the entire area of an outdoor arena. The area is rectangular-ish in shape. 400ft wide and 600ft long. It has 6 light towers, 1 on each of the 400 foot ends and 2 on each of the 600 foot ends. I can mount on anything and spend as much money as needed. The needs of the network would be to provide access for, up to 15 wireless HD cameras with audio, and a public-wifi network. • How to customize Windows 7 HAL library during installation (BSOD STOP: 0x000000A5)?

  While trying to install Windows 7 x86 Ultimate on Samsung M40 laptop (Pentium M 1.7 Dothan, 2 GB RAM/ 100 GB HDD) i receive BSOD STOP: 0x000000A5: The bios in this system is not fully ACPI compliant. Please contact your system vendor for an updated bios. The bios on the system is updated to latest version. If ACPI is the real source of the issue it means that I possibly could use another HAL library. In Windows XP it is possible to install system with generic HAL library pressing F7 when installer asks to supply drivers, but on Windows 7 I can't find such option. Ironically, Vista installs and works nice, even if they said that Windows 7 is less demanding for hardware. Windows 7 Advisor also tells nothing suspicious. Can anybody tell me how to customize Windows 7 installer to use generic HAL library (if it is possible, of course) or point me to another solution?

• CentOS 5 - Unable to resolve addresses for NFS mounts during boot

  I have a few servers running CentOS 5.3, and am trying to get 2 NFS mount-points to mount automatically on boot. I added 2 lines similar to the following to fstab: server1:/path1 /path1 nfs soft 0 0 server2:/path2 /path2 nfs soft 0 0 When I run 'mount -a' manually, the mount points are properly mounted as expected. However, when I reboot the machine, only /path2 is mounted. For /path1 I get the following error: mount: can't get address for server1 It obviously looks like a DNS issue, but the record is properly configured in all the DNS servers and is mounted properly if I re-try the mount after the reboot is completed. I could properly fix this by using IP address instead of hostnames in /etc/fstab or adding server1 to /etc/hosts but I would rather not do that. What might be the reason for failing to resolve this specific address during boot time? Why the problem is only with the 1st mount point and the 2nd is properly mounted despite having identical configuration?

  I've got a driver setup for 32 bit: An INF file and an x86 folder with two 32 bit dlls. I need to replace these 32 bit dll files with 64 bit ones. I just simply overwrite 32 bit files but no lock. How can I make 64 bit version of the driver? • Time machine link error

  When attempting to perform a Time Machine backup, the backup appears to proceed as normal, until it finishes copying files at which point it complains that an "error occurred while linking files for" one of my external hard disks. During the previous backup that particular disk was in fact empty, and therefore I can't understand why Time Machine is attempting to link back to it. But alas. I've verified all my disks using Disk Utility and they all appear to be fine. Does anybody know what causes this error, and how I might go about fixing it? Failing that is there a way to force Time Machine to create a brand new backup rather than an incremental one? Thanks in advance!

• Can DVCSs enforce a specific workflow?

  So, I have this little debate at work where some of my colleagues (which are actually in charge of administrating our Perforce instance) say that workflows are strictly a process thing, and that the tools that we use (in this case, the version control system) have no take on it. In otherwords, the point that they make is that workflows (and their execution) are tool-agnostic. My take on this is that DVCSs are better at encouraging people in more flexible and well-defined ways, because of the inherent branching occurring in the background (anonymous branches), and that you can enforce workflows through the deployment model you establish (e.g. pull requests through repository management, dictator/liutenant roles with their machines setup as servers, etc.) I think in CVCSs you have to enforce workflows through policies and policing, because there is only one way to share the code, while in DVCSs you just go with the flow based on the infrastructure/permissions that were setup for you. Even when I have provided the earlier arguments, I'm still unable to fully convince them. Am I saying something the wrong way?, if not, what other arguments or examples do you think would be useful to convince them? Edit: The main workflow we have been focusing on, because it makes sense to both sides is the Dictator/Lieutenants workflow: My argument for this particular workflow is that there is no pipeline in a CVCS (because there is just sharing work in a centralized way), whereas there is an actual pipeline in DVCSs depending on how you deploy read/write permissions. Their argument is that this workflow can be done through branching, and while they do this in some projects (due to policy/policing) in other projects they forbid developers from creating branches.

• How should I load level data in java?

  I'm setting up my engine for a certain action/arcade game to have a set of commands that would look something like this. Set landscape to grass Create rocks at ... Create player at X, Y Set goal to "Get to point X Y" Spawn enemy at X, Y I'd then have each object knowing what it has to do, and acting on its own. I've been thinking about how to store this data. External data files could be parsed by a level class, and certain objects can be spawned through that. I could also create a base level class and extend it for each level, but that'd create a large amount of classes. Another idea is to have one level parser class, but have a case for each level. This would be extremely silly and bulky, but I mention it because I found that I did this at 2 AM last night. I'm finally getting why I have to plan out my inheritances, though. RIP project. I might be completely missing another option.

  Hi, I'm working as a junior developer for a startup company, and have been working here around 7 months now. After 4 months, we had a late quarterly review, and just before the boss mentioned there was a training budget, and we should let them know what training we needed and they'd get it for us. I asked for some training at the time, but 3 months have passed without mention of it, and I have since learnt what I needed in my own time (I just can't stop learning new things!) I took on a new role recently, so have been given some cheap ($60) training for that however. Now the next review is approaching, and I would like to get Adobe Qualified Expert qualifications for ActionScript 3 / Flex. I was told by a contracted co-worker who had left that I should try to get the company to pay for this, as it's something they can tell potential investors as a selling point.
