  I am writing a utility that runs on RHEL5 command line. I need my command line options to be simple but powerful. I looked at the various UNIX utilities to get an idea of how simple command line utilities have to be. Do you guys suggest any documents/links that talk about command line etiquette? I am modelling my utility on top of LVM (that's all the info I can give for now). I know it's a software engineering question, but I thought it would be appropriate to post here. Please advise....   I am trying Ubuntu 12.04 booted from a DVD disk before I install it. I currently havwe windows 8 (which I hate) and I have a couple of Data base programs with my movies, hundreds of movies, in them. Is there a database available for Ubuntu that is compatible with Microsoft Database? There are too much data in the current database file for me to have to rewrite the program. So far, I love the Ubuntu 12.04. I have been able to access my microsoft works spreadsheet files and documents with no problem. And I like the thuderbird email and just about everything else about Ubuntu 12.04. I just need to be able to access my database files and to write lables and envelopes. Thanks. Toby J Paris, TN

• I think I deleted my windows

  I tried to intall backtrack using a bootable cd. I think I clicked the option and it overwrote my windows 7. How do I get that back? I do not have a windows restore cd. Backtrack did not actually install at the time it stated there was a problem at 24% I then tried to get into Windows after shutting down and OS never booted up again. Does this mean I lost all my documents and programs? Can I call the company that sold my laptop to and get a bootable CD? Thank you.

  We are crawling and downloading lots of companies' PDFs and trying to pick out the ones that are Annual Reports. Such reports can be downloaded from most companies' investor-relations pages. The PDFs are scanned and the database is populated with, among other things, the: Title Contents (full text) Page count Word count Orientation First line Using this data we are checking for the obvious phrases such as: Annual report Financial statement Quarterly report Interim report Then recording the frequency of these phrases and others. So far we have around 350,000 PDFs to scan and a training set of 4,000 documents that have been manually classified as either a report or not. We are experimenting with a number of different approaches including Bayesian classifiers and weighting the different factors available. We are building the classifier in Ruby. My question is: if you were thinking about this problem, where would you start?

They give you javascript code that you embed in your pages (whichever event you wish to track) and voila..you're done. I have written a native application for Android phones, which is actually an adaptation of the actual web site. Now, I am required to setup Analytics and tracking for this native application. Question: How to do setup a native application for Analytics? We have Java Script code(not Google Analytics but for some other engine) that works for the original web site. Is there a way to incorporate that in the native application? I know Android supports Java Script via WebViews(Webkit);my application does not have webviews, it is native! • Is there any simple way to access installed programs?

  Just installed Ubuntu for the first time... Is there any simple way to browse installed programs? On Mac there is the Applications top-level folder... here I see Desktop, Documents, Downloads etc but no Apps? That'd be a good idea, no? (is there some way to create this myself?) On Windows there is the Start menu... Here it seems like I have to click the 'Dash Home' and then I can see 'Recent Apps' ... I can search for them (I'd rather not) ...or I can click the ruler/pencil icon at the bottom and see 'Recent Apps' and click to expand 'Installed Apps' ...ok that's all of them - is it possible to get a straight list view instead of the hard-to-scan wrapped rows? Also, is there any way to get rid of the pointless random selection of 'Apps available for download' at the bottom?

  It took me a while to find out that with ubuntu-one I can sync only folders in my home-folder.   This is the first time I'm repporting something hoping that it can be usefull for you. When updating from 11.010 to 12.04 (what include updating Libre office I supose), I can't any more work with any document that was originally made in Libre office. Every change freezes the screen, I can't save anything... I'm talking of complex documents, with lots of internal references and footnotes and some propor text styles of about 230 pages (phd work) I wanted to alert you that probabely something is wrong but as I don't have any tecnical knowledge, I don't know what could be usefull to help you in your great job of making good free software. My little desktop has 2Gb of Ram memory and an atom processor (I can look for more details if that would be usefull to you)

  I always use Google translate and paste back the the results in Vim. But for some reason Google translate also screws up the HTML tags around the content I want to translate. Is there a solution for this? For instance, the double quotes are translated to Chinese-cased double quotes: 'pictures_h2'=>“?????????? Strong and li tags are translated too (well I kinda expected that). P S : IS there any translator which respect HTML tags? or translation plugin for Vim?

  Context: I downloaded a file (Audirvana 0.7.1.zip) from code.google to my Macbook Pro (Mac OS X 10.6.6). (current url: http://code.google.com/p/audirvana/downloads/detail?name=Audirvana%200.7.1.zip&can=2&q= ) I wanted to verify the checksum, which for that particular file is posted as 862456662a11e2f386ff0b24fdabcb4f6c1c446a (SHA-1). git hash-object gave me a different hash, but openssl sha1 returned the expected 862456662a11e2f386ff0b24fdabcb4f6c1c446a. The following experiment seems to rule out any possible download corruption or newline differences and to indicate that there are actually two different algorithms at play: $ echo A > foo.txt $ cat foo.txt A $ git hash-object foo.txt f70f10e4db19068f79bc43844b49f3eece45c4e8 $ openssl sha1 foo.txt SHA1(foo.txt)= 7d157d7c000ae27db146575c08ce30df893d3a64 What's going on?
