• Adding Command-Line Switches To Windows Shortcuts

  Is there a way to, in general, create a Windows shortcut to a file and instruct Windows to pass certain switches to the application before passing the filename? For example: I have an Excel file, abc.xlsx. If I want to create a shortcut to open this file read-only, I would change the target to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" /r abc.xlsx, but this fails when another person on my network opens the shortcut and their EXCEL.EXE is not in that same folder. Surely there's a way to tell Windows to pass the /r switch without supplying the path/filename of the application that is supposed to open the file?

• Run totally silent rsync?

  I have a cronjob that runs hourly, and is totally silent unless something goes wrong. Well ... almost ... A part of the job is rsync --del -Cacqrz public/. [email protected]:/target/path This always prints "logged in". How can I make it stop? (Short of 'grep -v' ;-) I don't get the "logged in" message if I do things like ssh [email protected] ls The transport is, of course, ssh (using keys). Source host is either OSX or Ubuntu (tried both, same behavior). Target host is Linux of some flavor.

• Installing multiple versions of a shared library

  I am running ubuntu 10.04 and I want to use tmux 1.6. tmux has a dependency on libevent 2. My solution was to compile libevent2 and drop into /usr/local/lib then compile tmux against this lib and drop into /usr/local/bin. This works great until...I restart. This is just an assumption on my part but it seems that other binaries are now linking to the libevent2 library presumably because its on the library path. Because there are 60+ packages with libevent1 dependencies this causes my install to basically lose its mind. Is there an idiomatic way to approach running an application that has a core library dependency on a different version? Should I just statically link the lib?

  So I'm trying to copy 44k files from one server to another. My Powershell script is: Import-CSV f:\script\Listoffiles.csv | foreach $line {Move-item $_.Source $_.Destination} With the Format for the CSV: Source, Destination E:\folder1\folder2\file with space.txt, \\1.2.3.4\folder1\folder2\file with space.txt I keep getting: A positional parameter cannot be found that accepts argument '\\1.2.3.4\folder1\folder2\file'. • Emacs can't find my installed modules

  I run Perl/Tk or WWW::Mechanize just fine using terminal but when I try to invoke the interpreter through Emacs shell (M-!), it dies with a message: Can't locate tk.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /etc/perl /usr/local/lib/perl/5.12.4 /usr/local/share/perl/5.12.4 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.12 /usr/share/perl/5.12 /usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at perl-tk.pl line 2. Obviously, this array @INC doesn't hold the path to my modules, the question is, how can I do that? I didn't find anything on emacs manual. I also googled it but to no avail.

• Shortcut with arguments in Debian

  I have a volume on a debian server which contains a large number of images at full resolution in various folders. What I'd like to do is have a separate sort of browse proxy folder which contains lower quality browse copies of these to enable users to access them for viewing over lower speed dial in accounts. I'd ideally like these to be created on the fly using ImageMagick so there isnt the need to store the large number of browse copies full time and worry about keeping them up to date etc The way I'd invisaged this happening is the browse proxy folder containing a duplicate file and folder structure but with symlinks pointing to a script to transform them with the file path as an argument. Except I know this isnt possible with symlinks so am wondering if there's another way of doing this on linux. On windows shortcuts can take arguments and I'm wondering how to do the same on a Linux platform? (or perhaps I'm going about this the wrong way?)

• How can I move an existing VM's files to a new directory in the same datastore?

  Hi, I have some VMs deployed on ESX. In vSphere 4, I want to move these VMs into another directory in the datastore. So the VM directories are under root, but I want them in root/MyNewFolder. I tried this by turning off a VM, copying the VM's file (VMDK etc) into the directory I want, deleting the hard drive from the VM's settings, adding a new hard drive and then selecting the new path to the VMDK. When I press ok on the settings dialog box, having made this modification to the settings, I get the following error: not found. What I am trying to do also does not seem to be possible when making a new VM. I can only make VMs under root.

• Require file for mount and also update the file after mount?

  I am trying to make sure a directory exists for a mount and then also update the permissions of that directory after the mount happens. • Why can't I install MySQL on my computer? [closed]

  I have read a lot of tutorials, but I am still having problems. What I tried: I downloaded mysql-5.5.9-winx64. All that I read says that I can run Setup.exe, but there is no such file in the download. The other option I know there is, is including \mysql-5.5.9-winx64\bin in the PATH variable and then trying to execute the mysql command. When I do that, the error I get is: ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061) I then downloaded mysql-5.5.9-winx64.msi, which is easier to install, but once I followed the instructions and it was installed, I got the same error executing the mysql command. How can I use MySQL? EDIT: I've now removed everything I installed, and I want to start from scratch.

• How to make using command prompt less painful

  I want to learn to use the command prompt better on Windows to have more control over what I do and just for the learning experience. The main annoyance I have right now is all of the typing. If I want to perform an operation on a file with a large path I'm sitting there typing it out for a minute at least, and if I make a mistake I have to press the up arrow key and scroll through the entire thing and find what I did wrong. Is there any tools to make this easier?

• Image annotation with Inkscape, Pointer and explanation for objects in picture

  I need straight paths with end markers for associating text to parts of the image. For better readability, it needs to be high-contrast, i.e. a white line with black outline. Stroke to path will create a group of a box and a circle from the line with end marker. This makes placement of the markers more difficult, as with the node tool it is just a matter of dragging the end nodes of a line segment. I will try to place the markers as line for now and only finally converting them to an outline.

• Has anyone found a (eg bash) shell terminal for Windows as good as the OS X one?

  I am mostly using 'git-bash' which came with the Windows install of Git vcs. I think it is the same one that comes with Cygwin. It works fine technically but the UI sucks: have to right-click the title bar and go to Properties to change the window width most annoyingly... copy and paste and highlight with the mouse are equally cumbersome In contrast, the Terminal app that comes with OS X manages these with aplomb and makes it so much more comfortable to work with. You can even drag and drop a file on it and it will paste the file path in at your cursor! I have also tried: http://sourceforge.net/projects/win-bash http://www.steve.org.uk/Software/bash/ http://www.hamiltonlabs.com/cshell.htm None of these do copy and paste of text without cumbersome right-clicking. I am specifically looking for a Unix-flavoured shell in Windows so I don't have to use different shells between my home dev (Windows), the live server (Linux) or dev at the office (Mac). Yes I have Googled and haven't found one yet...

• Excel: #NAME? apppearing when linking/referencing other spreadsheets/workbook cells

  I'm updating a spreadsheet that refers to data in another worksheet =NameofWorksheet for some reason I get #NAME? in some of the cells, even when the actual path is correct. The only way to overcome the problem is to open up the source spreadsheet and then recalculate the destination spreadsheet. But, if I then close the workbooks; open up just the destination workbook the #NAME? issue comes back. I've even created a test destination spreadsheet and it doesn't suffer from the #NAME? problem. Any reason for this? Should I be worried about the integrity of some Sheets? Any advice greatly appreciated. Michael.

• Why does FIND on Windows 7 give an "Access Denied" error?

  Hi All, I have an administrator account on a Windows 7 x64 machine. It is not THE administrator account, the account is simply a member of the administrators group. The install is default. When the user opens a command prompt it ends up in the users' %HOMEPATH% directory where you'll find various directories like the Documents folder. If the user uses the following (windows) FIND command, an "Access Denied" error occurs: FIND /I "My String" C:\Users\Rann\Documents Access denied - C:\USERS\RANN\DOCUMENTS Using runas or right-clicking on the command prompt to run it as an administrator does not change this behaviour; an administrator-level cmd.exe still gives me the same error. Changing the path to any other directory gives the same error. My question is thus: How is one supposed to use the FIND (and possibly other) commands? What rights are needed?

• Can't connect to ssh after nfs problem

  Hello, I had a problem yesterday with a server that lost connection (S1). From that server, there was a dir shared with NFS to another one (S2), no homedir and not in $PATH, but a dir to store old files for archiving. S1 was back online after a few hours, but now I cannot access S2 because of this (and I'm sure it's because of that because all other services are running without any problem). The ssh connection hangs here: debug1: Entering interactive session. I know a reboot will do the job, but considering this is the NAS of a big app, my bosses will kill me if I do it. Is there any other way to get over this? I tried with different users, but all of them hang in the same place. I connected with HP iLO and not even there I cannot use my username. Thanks in advance.

• HP 120 printer network install con windows 7 home

  I have a HP-1210 printer connected to a win 7 ultimate edt, this one, the printer-host, is logged to a domain. I also have a Windows 7 home edition (not logged into the domain) and I want to install the hp1210 printer. Other printers in the network (connected to the domain) are currently connected to the printer. In the Win 7 Home I ran the HP1210 installer but it doesn't find the printer over the network. Is this because this win7home is not connected to the domain? Is there any way to manually specify the printer path?

• HTTPS load balancing based on some component of the URL

  We have an existing application that we wish to split across multiple servers (for example: 1000 users total, 100 users split across 10 servers). Ideally, we'd like to be able relay the HTTPS requests to a particular server based on some component of the URL. For example: Users 1 through 100 go to http://server1.domain.com/ Users 2 through 200 go to http://server2.domain.com/ etc. etc. etc. Where the incoming requests look like this: https://secure.domain.com/user/{integer user # goes here}/path/to/file Does anyone know of an easy way to do this? Pound looks promising... but it doesn't look like it supports routing based on URL like this. Even better would be if it didn't need to be hard-coded- The load balancer could make a separate HTTP request to another server to ask "Hey, what server should I relay to for a request to URL {the URL that was requested goes here}?" and relay to the hostname returned in the HTTP response.

• Best way to process a queue in C# (PDF treatment)

  First of all let me expose what I would like to do : I already dispose of a long-time running webapp developed in ASP.NET (C#) 2.0. In this app, users can upload standard PDF files (text+pics). The app is running in production on a Windows Server 2003 and has a dedicated database server (SQL server 2008) also running Windows Server 2003. I myself am a quite experienced web developer, but never actually programmed anything non-web (or at least nothing serious). I plan on adding a functionality to the webapp for which I would need a jpg snapshot of each page of the PDF. Creating these "thumbnails" isn't the big deal as such, I already do it inside my webapp using ghostscript. I've only done it on 1 page documents for now though, and the new functionality will need to process bigger documents. In order for this process to be transparent aswell for the admins as the final users, I would like to implement some kind of queue to delay the processing of the thumbnails. There again, no problem to create the queue, it will consist of records in a table, with enough info to find the pdf document back. Then I will need to process this queue, and that's were my interrogations start. Obviously the best solution to process it isn't an ASP script or so, so I will have to get out of my known environment. No problem, but I have no idea which direction to go. Therefore, a few questions : What should I develop ? I presumably need something that is "standby" on the server, runs when needed, then returns to idle state until further notice.Should I be looking into Windows service ? Is there another more appropriate type of project ? Depending on the first answer, what will be the approach ? Should I have somehow SQL server "tell" the program/service/... to process the queue, or should I have that program/service/... periodically check the state of the queue and treat new items. In both case, which functionality can I use ? we're not talking about hundreds of PDF a day (max 50 maybe), I can totally afford to treat the queue 1 item at a time. Can you confirm I don't have to look much further on threads and so ? (I found a lot of answers talking about threads in queue treatment, but it looks quite overkill for my needs) Maybe linked to the previous question : what about concurrent call to the program, whatever it is ? Let's suppose it is currently running, and a new record comes in the queue, what should be the behaviour ? I don't need much detailed answers and would already be happy with answers like "You can do the processing with a service, and yes it's possible to have sqlserver on machine A trigger a service start on machine B" or "You have to develop xxx and then use the scheduler to run it every xxx minutes". I don't mind reading articles and so, but I can hardly afford to spend too much time learning stuff to finally realize I went the wrong way for this project, so basically I'm trying to narrow down the scope of matters I need to investigate. • How can I set clean urls (enable rewrite) if I don't have a domain ?

  In order to enable clean urls in Drupal, I add the lines below to the lighttpd configuration file. However I'm now working on a local server and I don't have a domain available. So I need to work with this address http://local.ip/Sites/mywebsite I've tried to replace ["host"] with ["socket"] and replace the domain with ip and subfolders (see address above), but unsuccessfully. • Upgrade to java 1.7 in eclipse on mac

  I'm sort of a beginner with eclipse but I want to update the libraries or build path or whatever to java 1.7 from java 1.6 and I can't figure it out. I'm a computer science student at the university of washington and various TA's and students have tried to figure out this problem but it's stumped them all. I've installed java 1.7 from Oracle a few times already and the java section of system preferences says I have 1.7 but java -version in terminal says: java version "1.6.0_41" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_41-b02-445-11M4107) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.14-b01-445, mixed mode) What's going on here? My mac is totally up to date on everything else

• Roaming Profile to act as a redirected folder? Dropbox in roaming profile is also causing slow login/logou

  As title, what I'm wondering to know is .. if the roaming profile with Windows 2008 R2 Server (I'm talking about V2 profile - Windows7/Windows8) can work as a redirected folder (it can be done with the Desktop, Contacts, Download, AppData, My Documents). The roaming profile is copied at each login (server - client) and at each logout (client - server). This is causing slow login and logout for huge roaming profile. I can't stop the usage of roaming profile since the environment is a School with 1000 users. But I have big issues with users who populate the profile path (which is mapped on "User's File" under Windows7/8) with other stuff than the already redirected Desktop and My Document. A typical problem is given by the Dropbox folder... Any solution?

• Debian SMB share having permission issues in windows 7

  Hi Everyone, I setup a Debian squeeze server with samba. I then shared my /media directory with the following configuration: [media] comment=Hard Drives read only = no locking = no path = /media guest ok = yes browsable = yes directory mask = 0777 When the drives are mapped in Windows 7, the user can write to all of the subdirectories of media (sdb1, sdc1, etc), but cannot write to any folders that they create themselves in the subdirectories of media. For example, if the user mapped /media/sdb1 to Z:, and then creates a folder Z:\test, the folder is created successfully, but no files can be written to Z:\test. If the user ssh's into the server, they have no problems writing to these directories. I have included the screenshots, in order, of what happens on Windows.   I use an older version of the example42 mysql module, which defines the mysql.conf file but not its content. • Windows 7 CD Command only echoes directory

  The path for every new instance of the shell starts in my user directory (C:\Users\user). Within this directory or rather drive (in this case C:) I can't use the cd command as I'm used to - it only echoes the specified directory. As soon as I change the directory to a parent-directory I can execute "cd D:" and it changes to the drive. But this behavious doesn't appear consistently in all instances of the shell. Sometimes I have to go to C: to change it. I'm quite sure I'm not using the command in the wrong way, since it's what I'm used to do to start grails.

• Is it normal that Software installs in Admin user folder?

  I've got a new computer with Windows 7, which I'm using for the first time. For security I decided to create a standard user for everyday work instead of using an admin account. However when I install programs logged in as the standard user (such as Aptana right now) they always try to install in the admin's user folder (C:\Users\Admin\AppData...). I'd expect the programs to install to the standard user's folder or Progran Files as in XP. This also leads to that I need to grant admin rights whenever I start such a program. Of course I could just change the installation path every time, but I find this behavior strange. Ist it normal, or did I somehow mess up the Windows 7 installation?
