• Static objects and concurrency in a web application

  I'm developing small Java Web Applications on Tomcat server and I'm using MySQL as my database. Up until now I was using a connection singleton for accessing the database but I found out that this will ensure just on connection per Application and there will be problems if multiple users want to access the database in the same time. (They all have to make us of that single Connection object). I created a Connection Pool and I hope that this is the correct way of doing things. Furthermore it seems that I developed the bad habit of creating a lot of static object and static methods (mainly because I was under the wrong impression that every static object will be duplicated for every client which accesses my application). Now, is this a bad practice? What happens if let's say 1k users access AccountService simultaneously? I know that all this questions and bad practices come from a bad understanding of the static attribute in a web application and the way the server handles this attributes. • Time management and self improvement

  I hope I can open a discussion on this topic as this is not a specific problem. It's a topic I hope to get some ideas on how people in similar situation as mine manage their time. OK, I'm a single developer on a software project for the last 6-8 months. The project I'm working on uses several technologies, mainly .net stuff: WPF, WF, NHibernate, WCF, MySql and other third party SDKs relevant for the project nature. My experience and knowledge vary, for example I have a lot of experience in WPF but much less in WCF. I work full time on the project and im curios on how other programmers which need to multi task in many areas manage their time. I'm a very applied type of person and prefer to code instead of doing research. I feel that doing research "might" slow down the progress of the project while I recognize that research and learning more in areas which I'm not so strong will ultimately make me more productive. How would you split up your daily time in productive coding time and time to and experiment, read blogs, go through tutorials etc. I would say that Im coding about 90%+ of my day and devoting some but very little time in research and acquiring new knowledge. Thanks for your replies. I think I will adopt a gradual transition to Dominics block parts. I kinda knew that coding was taking up way to much of my time but it feels good having a first version of the project completed and ready. With a few months of focused hard work behind me I hope to get more time to experiment and expand my knowlegde. Now I only hope my boss will cut me some slack and stop pressuring me for features...

• HTML5 or Javascript game engine to develop a browser game

  I would like to start developing a MMO browser game, like Travian or Ogame, probably involving also a bit of more sophisticated graphical features such as players interacting in real time with a 2d map or something like that. My main doubt is what kind of development tools I should use: I've a good experience with PHP and MySQL for the server side and Javascript (and jQuery) regarding the client side. Coding everything from scratch would be of course really painful so I was wondering if I should use a javascript game engine or not. Are there (possibly free) game engine you would recommend? Are they good enough to develop a big game? Also, I saw a lot of HTML5 games popping up lately but I'm now sure if using HTML5 is a good idea or not. Would you recommend it? What are the pro and cons about using HTML5? If you'd recommend it, do you have any good links regarding game development with HTML5? (PS: I know that HTML5 and a Javascript engine are not mutually exclusive, I just didn't know how to formulate a proper title since English is not my main language. So, please, answer addressing HTML5 and a game engine pro and cons separately)

• Blog/CMS software with editing style like Stack Exchange

  I have been updating a Wordpress blog lately and found the turnaround time for content creation and editing is much worse than for Stack Overflow posts. Part of this has to do with being original compositions rather than riffing off a question. But part of it is the software. I am looking for CMS/blog software that has an overall editing experience similar to Stack Overflow. The most important features I'm looking for: Inline editing (mostly) Real-time preview on the same page are all important features for speeding up data entry. Markdown support (with inline and block-level code support) Syntax hilighting The features I must maintain from my self-hosted Wordpress: Somewhat popular/supported software, with extensibility support Self hostable Will work with MySql Wordpress has plugins for all these, but they don't necessarily work together. For example I've found a few markdown-on-save plugins, but I doubt those have a chance of ever supporting inline editing or real time previews. Also the most popular syntax hilighting plugins don't support inline code blocks, and I doubt previews would work with other syntax hilighting methods. If I get a wiki/web page content creation system along with it, or somehow integrate this into GitHub (with all the features I requested) I'll accept those as side benefits :) Formed as a question: Are there any pieces of content creation software for making a blog that support an editing style like Stack Exchange and Stack Overflow? Or magic combinations of Wordpress plugins that offer the same?

• Improving the performance of a db import process

  I have a program in Microsoft Access that processes text and also inserts data in MySQL database. This operation takes 30 mins or less to finished. I translated it into VB.NET and it takes 2 hours to finish. The program goes like this: A text file contains individual swipe from a corresponding person, it contains their id, time and date of swipe in the machine, and an indicator if it is a time-in or a time-out. I process this text, segregate the information and insert the time-in and time-out per row. I also check if there are double occurrences in the database. After checking, I simply merge the time-in and time-out of the corresponding person into one row only. This process takes 2 hours to finished in VB.NET considering I have a table to compare which contains 600,000+ rows. Now, I read in the internet that python is best in text processing, i already have a test but i doubt in database operation. What do you think is the best programming language for this kind of problem? How can I speed up the process? My first idea was using python instead of VB.NET, but since people here telling me here on SO that this most probably won't help I am searching for different solutions.

• Computer Science Degree or Computer Engineering Degree?

  Hello everyone, I'm 23 years old living in Italy and this year I will be getting my high school diploma. I'm interested in pursuing a collage degree and work in the IT field. At the moment I'm self teaching myself Java (I also know python, html, css and mysql). I'm also learning about algorithms and OO design. I'm curious how important a college degree is for me, considering my age and if there is a big difference between computer science and computer engineer. There is a computer science university where I currently live but not a computer engineer one. For some reason universities that offer computer engineering courses are only in bigger cities such as Milan, Bologna, Roma. Cost wise, it would be cheaper for me to study near home at a computer science school. Career wise, would a computer engineering university offer me more work opportunities instead of a computer science degree ? Is it easier transiting from CS to CEN or vice-versa? I'm not exactly sure what type of job I want to pursue in the future since I'm still a bit undecided but definitely not system/network administrator, database administrator, game developer.

• Ruby but not Rails on my Resume

  I have listed Ruby as a skill on my resume becuase I've been programming in Ruby for 5 years while I work on my Ph.D. thesis. I've mostly been using it to implement natural language processing algorithms. I'm starting to look for a job, and I posted my resume to a few sites (as an extra bonus when applying to certain on-target jobs). Now I get recruiters calling me to offer me Ruby on Rails jobs. The problem is that I've never learned Rails. It was never relevant to what I'm doing for my Ph.D. How do you recommend handling this situation to avoid wasting my time and theirs? (And learning Rails probably isn't an option until I finish my thesis.) Can my resume be adjusted to make this clearer? Should it be adjusted? Should I just politely tell them on the phone that I don't know Rails? By the way, the relevant part of my resume simply says: Skills: Programming Languages: C, C++, Java, Scala, Ruby, LaTeX Databases: MySQL, XML, XPath and lists a few other skill areas that couldn't possibly be confused with a Rails developer.

• E a qualidade por trás?

  Olá pessoal! Hoje o assunto não é código, mas sim a qualidade dele. Recentemente aqui na NBR começamos com um cliente um contrato de manutenção e migração de 2 projetos existentes. A nossa surpresa aconteceu quando tivemos acesso ao código-fonte dos projetos. E aí entra o assunto deste post… Quão importante é a qualidade do código-fonte nos projetos? A grande questão aqui neste caso específico é a seguinte: o layout é aceitável, planejado, onde pudemos perceber certa preocupação. Mas e o código por trás? Entre GoTo, banco de dados em Access, MySql e SQL Server no mesmo projeto (sem necessidade), abordagem 100% procedural, sem reutilização de código e ambientes dinâmicos, este post é mais um desabafo e uma preocupação do que qualquer coisa. Nós como desenvolvedores natos temos que ter uma preocupação básica: estou fazendo meu trabalho corretamente ou estou me livrando dele? Muitos clientes não analisam o código por trás dos seus projetos. Basta a interface cumprir o que foi prometido (ou quase cumprir) que está tudo certo. E qual é o preço de um código mal feito? A manutenção é tão importante quando o desenvolvimento de um novo projeto. O ponto mestre é defender isto para os possíveis clientes e provar, para os já clientes, que isto tem valor. No nosso dia-a-dia tentamos apresentar aos clientes (quando eles estão interessados) que nosso código é bem feito. E isto não depende do projeto, do cliente ou do desenvolvedor: uma interface bem feita é tão importante quanto seu código. Qualquer um dos dois pode acabar com seu projeto. Mas confesso que o mais dificil nisto tudo é defender que a qualidade tem preço e a sua importancia, para aqueles clientes que acham que não é necessário. Como você defende este ponto de vista? Vamos deixar claro: software bem feito não é barato! E definitivamente não existe a opção “sem qualidade”. Abraços!

• Visual web page designer for Django?

  I'm just starting my Django learning so pardon me if any part of this question is off-base. I have done a lot of web searching for information on the equivalent of a visual web page designer for Django and I don't seem to be getting very far. I have experience with Delphi (Object Pascal), C, C++, Python, PHP, Java, and Javascript and have created and maintained several web sites that included MySQL database dependent content. For the longest time I've been using one of the standard WYSIWIG designers to design the actual web pages, with any needed back end programming done via Forms or AJAX calls that call server side PHP scripts. I have grown tired of the quirks, bugs, and other annoyances associated with the program. Also, I find myself hungry for the functionality and reliability a good MVC based framework would provide me so I could really express myself with custom code easily. So I am turning to Django/Python. However, I'm still a junkie for a good WYSIWIG designer for the layout of web pages. I know there are some out there that thrive on opening up a text editor, possibly with some code editor tools to assist, and pounding out pages. But I do adore a drag and drop editor for simple page layout, especially for things like embedded images, tables, buttons, etc. I found a few open source projects on GitHub but they seem to be focused on HTML web forms, not a generic web page editor. So can I get what I want here? The supreme goal would be to find not only a web page editor that creates Django compatible web pages, but if I dare say it, have a design editor that could add Python code stubs to various page elements in the style of the Delph/VCL or VB design editors. Note, I also have the Wing IDE Professional IDE, version 2.0. As a side note, if you know of any really cool, fun, or time-saving Python libraries that are designed for easy integration into Django please tell me about them. -- roschler

  I'm in the process of considering which programming languages I should devote the majority of my coding studies to. I'm a 2nd year CS student, majoring in IT security. What I want to do/work with: Intelligence gathering Relational databases Virus design Snort network IPS Current coding experience (what I'm going to keep): Java - intermediate HTML5 - intermediate SQL (MySQL, Oracle 11g) - basic BASH - basic I'm going to need to learn (at least) one of the following languages in order to be successful in my field. Languages to add (at least 1): Ruby (+Metasploit) C++ (virus design, low-level driver interaction, computationally intensive applications) Python (import ALL the things) My dilemma: If I diversify too broadly, I won't be able to focus on, and improve in a specific niche. Does anyone have any advice as to how I should select a language? What I'm considering + why I'm leaning towards Ruby because of Metasploit support, despite lower efficiency when compared to Python. Any suggestions based on real-world experience? Should I focus on Ruby, Python, or C++? Both Ruby, and Python have been regarded as syntactically similar to Java which my degree is based around.   Is the ability to see the addresses for weblinks the only reason that you keep the Status Bar visible? Now you can hide the Status Bar and move that address display to the Address Bar in Firefox. Before Here is the normal “Status Bar” address display for the weblink we were hovering the mouse over in our browser. That is nice but if you really prefer to keep the “Status Bar” hidden what do you do? Move that display to a better (and definitely more convenient) location. After Once you have the extension installed that is all there is to it…you are ready to go. Notice the address display in “Address Bar”. That is definitely looking nice. Just for fun we temporarily left the “Status Bar” visible as a demonstration while hovering over the link. And then with the “Status Bar” totally disabled…more screen real-estate is always a good thing. Note: The Status Address Bar extension does not show the original address behind shortened URLs. Conclusion If you are looking for an alternate way to see the address behind weblinks and acquire more screen real-estate, then the Status Bar extension will be a wonderful addition to your Firefox Browser. • What should I quote for a project I hope to get a job at the end of?

  Long story short: I applied for a (CakePHP, MySQL, etc) development job in London, UK. I grew up in Britain but am currently based quite a few thousand miles away in Canada, so I wasn't really expecting success. But quite a few emails and phone interviews later it seems that they really like me. At least to a point. Because such a major relocation would be a horrible thing to go wrong, they've sensibly suggested a trial run of getting me to build a website at a distance. I have the spec for this and it's quite a substantial amount of work. My problem is that I now need to suggest both a fee and a timescale for the job, and I haven't got any significant experience of working as a contractor. Looking at the spec, which is 1500 words of many concisely stated features, some fairly trivial and some moderately involved, I can easily imagine there being 2 weeks of intensive work there. (If everything went really well it might be closer to one week, but even though I want to impress, I definitely don't want to fall into the inexperienced-contractor trap of massively underestimating the amount of time a project will run to.) As an extra complication, there is no expectation that I should give up my day job to get this trial project done, so the hours will have to be clawed from evenings and weekends. I don't want to overcommit to a quick delivery date, only to find myself swiftly burning out due to an unrealistic workload. So, any advice for me? My main question is, what is a realistic hourly figure to demand of a stable but not excessively wealthy London-based company in the current market, bearing in mind that I'd like them to hire me afterwards? But any more general recommendations based on my circumstances above would be much appreciated too. Many thanks!

• Best approach for a clinic database

  As a practical assignment for the database course I'm taking I've been instructed to create a database for a local clinic, I've meet with the doctors a couple of times and discussed the information that needs to be stored in the database from personal to medical. Now I'm facing a tough decision because I've been given two choices: either to implement the database as a "local website" which only operates inside the clinic via WiFi, or to implement the front-end as a regular desktop application connecting to a shared database. Note: I've a 40 days deadline to deliver the first prototype and meet with my client. My questions are: 1- which approach should I go with given that I've more experience with desktop applications programming than web? 2- if I go with desktop front-ends what would be the best way to synchronize the database between all clients?? I've no experience and having searched for an answer a lot but came up with nothing detailed on this matter. 3- if I go with the web solution which choice would be best PHP & MySQL or ASP.NET & SQL Server or a different combination?? (given that my knowledge in both PHP & ASP.NET are nearly the same).

My company creates small/medium sites for wide variety of customers: autobusiness companies, weddign agencies, some sauna websites, etcetc, hope you get my point. They don't do big serious stuff like bank systems or really big systems, it's mostly small/medium-sized websites for startups/medium sized business. My main skills are PHP/MySQL, I also know HTML and a bit of CSS/JS/AJAX. I know that good web-developer must know some backend language (like PHP/Ruby/Python) AND HTML+CSS+JS+AJAX+JQuery combo. However, I was always wondering. In my company we have web-designer. In other serious organisations I often see the same stuff: web-developers who create business-logic and web-designers, who create design. As far as I know, after designers paint design of website they give it to developers either in PSD or sliced way, and developers put it together with logic, but design is NOT created by developers. Such separation seems very good for full-time job, but I am concerned with question how do freelance web-developers do websites? Do most of them just pay freelance designers to create design for them? Or do some people do both? Reason why I ask - I plan to start some freelancing in my free time after I get good at web-development. But I don't want to create websites with great business-logic but poor design. Neither I want to let someone else create a design for me. I like web-development very much and I am doing quite good, I like design aswell, even though I am a bit lost how to study it and get better at it. But I am scared that going in both directions won't let me become expert, it seems like two totally different jobs and getting really good in both seems very hard. But I really want to do both.
