• Unable to connect to VPN because ther are no TAP-Win32 adapters

  I am trying to connect to a Barracuda VPN with a windows 7 machine. I am gettng this message before it fails: There are no TAP-Win32 adapters on this system. You should be able to create a TAP-Win32 adapter by going to Start - All Programs - Network Connector - Add a new TAP-Win32 virtual ethernet adapter. I am unable to follow these instructions on Windows 7, any ideas on how to create this adapter?

  I'm playing around with virtual disks and thin provisioning and have a question about it. I've created several disks and allocated space to with thin provisioning. Is it possible to allocate more disk space than the maximum amount of the datastore space. So that for example, my VM's will stop functioning when the disks slowly start filling up?

• Windows 2008 R2 large file copy causes Hyper-V Manager to stop responding

  I'm using the EXPORT feature in Hyper-V to move a large Virtual Machine (VM) over a 1GB network from a Windows 2008 to a Windows 2008 R2 box (200GB) and its so intense that I get the following icon on my destination Hyper-V manager: Is this expected? Is there another way to get large file across the network and minimize this intense I/O effect? Anyones else ever seen that Do Not Enter sign? The other VMs are functional but slow, but I'm guessing that is expected.

  I have a small VPS with 6GB RAM hosting a couple of websites. Recently I have noticed that my cached memory size is quite high - see below: Cpu(s): 0.1%us, 0.1%sy, 0.0%ni, 99.1%id, 0.0%wa, 0.2%hi, 0.4%si, 0.0%st Mem: 6113256k total, 5949620k used, 163636k free, 398584k buffers Swap: 1048564k total, 104k used, 1048460k free, 3586468k cached After investigating if there is some method to have this flushed or cleared I stumbled upon a command which is: sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches I read it could be useful to add this to a chron-task/job. Is this method recommended or could this lead to potential problems? The only concern I have is that I use one Magento installation on Memcached - could this have any negative effects on it? I am certainly not a pro therefore I would very much appreciate some expert advise. PS: My VPS runs on CentOS 5 x64 and I have WHM + NGINX installed.

  I have a Debian VPS with an assigned static IP. I want to setup a virtual interface (with an ip like 192.168..) on my laptop (Ubuntu, dynamic IP) linked to the remote VPS, so that if I bind sockets to it the traffic is tunneled to the VPS and sent to the Internet from there. Port forwarding must be available. This looks like a job for a VPN software, but I'm clueless about the pieces of software needed. Any advice?

• "Safely Remove Hardware" icon keeps reverting to "Only show notifications"

  I have the 'Safely Remove Hardware' tray icon set to 'Show icon and notifications' to save a mouse click when removing a USB device but every few weeks the setting reverts to 'Only show notifications'. Does anyone know what causes this and/or how I can prevent it? I'm using Windows 7 SP1 64bit with a fairly bare installation (the machine hosts a set of virtual machines that I use to do my work).   I've seen two approaches to handling the presentation of shared storage to Windows Server 2008 R2 cluster VMs on VMWare vSphere. One is the traditional method of carving out a LUN on your SAN and presenting it to both hosts through the Microsoft ISCSI software initiator. The other method is to make a vmdk on an existing LUN and attach it to both hosts and made it an independent disk so that it isn't affected by snapshots. Is one way the "correct" way, or are both viable? Is there any advantage or disadvantage to doing either?

• nginx can't see MySQL

  I have a fully working Joomla 2.5.6 install driven by a local MySQL server, but I'd like to test nginx to see if it's a faster web serving experience than Apache. \ PHP 5.4.6 (PHP54w) \ CentOS 6.2 \ Joomla 2.5.6 \ PHP54w-fpm.i386 (FastCGI process manager) \ php -m shows: mysql & mysqli modules loaded Nginx seems to have installed fine via yum, it can process a PHP-info file via FastCGI perfectly OK (http://37.128.190.241/php.php) but when I stop Apache, start nginx instead and visit my site I get: "Database connection error (1): The MySQL adapter 'mysqli' is not available." I've tried adjusting my Joomla configuration.php to use mysql instead of mysqli but I get the same basic error, only this time "Database connection error (1): The MySQL adapter 'mysql' is not available" of course! Can anyone think what the problem might be please? I did try explicitly setting extension = mysqli.so and extension = mysql.so in my php.ini to try and force the issue (despite php -m showing they were both successfully loaded anyway) - no difference. Linode provides a ip but it's not dedicated. What is going to happen to SSL on that dreamhost IP when I switch over the DNS to linode? I have one virtual host can I host multiple domains while using SSL for one?

  A friend has a site developed in ColdFusion with MySQL and is looking for better cost-effective hosting as the traffic scales up rapidly. Azure comes to mind. I haven't used Azure myself, however, I believe it is possible to setup and interact with the web-server via RDP into a hosted Virtual Machine? I am curious if ColdFusion can be installed in the hosted Azure VM. Also, would the site have to be tweaked to run on Azure SQL, or could it continue to use MySQL? Thanks.

• Assign fixed IP address via DHCP by DNS lookup

  Preface I'm building a virtualization environment with Ubuntu 14.04 and LXC. I don't want to write my own template since the upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04 has shown that backwards compatibility is not guaranteed. Therefore I'm deploying my virtual machines via lxc-create, using the default Ubuntu template. The DNS for the servers is provided by Amazon Route 53, so no local DNS server is needed. I also use Puppet to configure my servers, so I want to keep the manual effort on the deployment minimal. Now, the default Ubuntu template assigns IP addresses via DHCP. Therefore, I need a local DHCP server to assign IP addresses to the nodes, so I can SSH into them and get Puppet running. Since Puppet requires a proper DNS setup, assigning temporary IP addresses is not an option, the client needs to get the right hostname and IP address from the start. Question What DHCP server do I use and how do I get it to assign the IP address based only on the host-name DHCP option by performing a DNS lookup on that very host name? What I've tried I tried to make it work using the ISC DHCP server, however, the manual clearly states: Please be aware that only the dhcp-client-identifier option and the hardware address can be used to match a host declaration, or the host-identifier option parameter for DHCPv6 servers. For example, it is not possible to match a host declaration to a host-name option. This is because the host-name option cannot be guaranteed to be unique for any given client, whereas both the hardware address and dhcp-client-identifier option are at least theoretically guaranteed to be unique to a given client. I also tried to create a class that matches the hostname like this: class "my-client-name" { match if option host-name = "my-client-name"; fixed-address my-client-name.my-domain.com; } Unfortunately the fixed-address option is not allowed in class statements. I can replace it with a 1-size pool, which works as expected: subnet 10.103.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 { option routers 10.103.1.1; class "my-client-name" { match if option host-name = "my-client-name"; } pool { allow members of "my-client-name"; range 10.103.1.2 10.103.1.2; } } However, this would require me to administer the IP addresses in two places (Amazon Route53 and the DHCP server), which I would prefer not to do. About security Since this is only used in the bootstrapping phase on an internal network and is then replaced by a static network configuration by Puppet, this shouldn't be an issue from a security standpoint. I am, however, aware that the virtual machine bootstraps with "ubuntu:ubuntu" credentials, which I intend to fix once this is running.

• LUNs disappear after rebooting the ESX/ESXi host

  A single LUN among from a group disappeared. Neither the host nor the Vcenter can see it. Four virtual machines on the LUN now are unknown. The strange thing is the LUN is now available in the list when you try to ADD datastore from configuration == storage == Add Datastore But this cannot help me since i need the vms on the lun and i do not get options to add the lun without formating it to VMFS How can i get the lun back or atleast be able to copy the vms from it
