• OS Isolation: Virtualization or Dual-Boot Duplication, a General How To?

  I want to isolate my windows 7 operating system and I have looked into virtualization. This should work with Linux, however, I do want to still have a way to run windows 7 securely, but without significant performance loss, thus eliminating virtualization for that. I know that you can dual boot because I currently do so with my XP/Linux system. Is there a way that I can duplicate my windows 7 system so I can select one at bootup? This way I can ensure that each OS is isolated and not worry about performance loss. However, I am having a lot of trouble finding a solid method for OS duplication?! Is this even possible or must I buy two versions of win7 and somehow install them separately? Any information regarding this would be helpful, thanks! Essentially I want, Two instances of win7 (not necessarily simultaneously running) Each are isolated from one another so that a security breach in one doesn't affect the other. I have found some information regarding the existence of a "Windows 8 pro system builder" which will allow clean installs in blank disks without any pre-requisites for prior Windows versions, but all information is very vague and without references. • Few questions about backing up the OS

  I'm running windows 7 with 2gb memory and 2.50 Ghz dual core cpu. here are my question regarding backing up an entire drive. I plan to use Macrium Reflect because its free. And I can't afford to buy one. If I backup a hard drive would I only be able to backup the partition where the operating system is? If I have installed applications which requires activation keys, and I have already installed an activation key. Does backing the hard drive also backup those application, so that I won't have to re-apply the keys later? If I have a multi-boot system, would the backup also include those other OS that are installed in my hard drive? Can I still boot into them after restoring the image? Do you have any links there that could enlighten me on what drive backup really is. Thanks!

  I have an excel sheet for groceries. One column is the name, another is whether to buy it or not (checkbox) and another is the amount. I'd like to have a widget in the top row so that I start typing an item's name and it shows a list of matching items that I can select from, or if I continue to type and there's only one item, completes its name. When the last item is selected, other widgets show the amount, which I can edit and clicking 'check' will check the item in the list.   Is there any solution out there to turn a Mac into a true multi-user thin client server? I'd like to set up a few cheap PCs with access to a couple accounts using something like VNC, but it isn't economical to buy a new server for each user or a new license for virtualized OS X Server for each user. I'm fully aware that OS X Server lets you set up users with "network home folders," and I know there's also VNC built into Mac OS X.   I'm thinking of bying 1 or more flash drives or an SD card to use with the readyboost function on by 64bit Windows 7 machine. I have a few questions regarding it before i put my hand in my pocket and buy anything. If i go ahead I would be using the fastest available flash/SD. I have 6GB of RAM current installed so will readyboost make any difference to boot / program load times? Will 2 x 2GB flash drives be quicker than 1 x 4GB or is the limitation on the motherboard?   Today decided to update from Win8 Pro to Win8.1. Everything was fine with enabled 3 monitors (Extended mode, not Eyefinity) at the same time. But after update can't enable 3d monitor, only 2 could be enabled at the same time. Did current things before write question here: Remove all drivers, reboots, re-installs Different cable input's and orders of enabling Tried to enable each monitor from Catalyst and Windows Screen Resolution Spec's: Windows 8.1 Pro XFX HD7970 3 of LG E2442 Cables: 2 DVI 1 HDMI Googled for many time and found one of possible solution is to buy ACTIVE mini DisplayPort to DVI/HDMI, but maybe there are some another more simple solutions?

  On my current not-so-good desktop computer, I'm currently running an Intel Core 2 Duo E6550-CPU, and I'm thinking of buying a newer one now that these must be cheap on E-bay and the like. Being a software guy, I'd be grateful for any help in identifying what CPUs that would fit my motherboard so I don't buy a processor which won't work with my computer. It might not be worth it however, since the SATA2-drive is currently what's bottlenecking my system, but I'm still curious about what could be done except for buying an SSD-drive. • Reverse proxy - how should it be done?

  I have a currently running server with Apache that is working great! However, I want to buy a VPS and use that as a proxy between the user and the "old" server. So the new server's only job is actually to just forward the traffic from the VPS to the old Apache server. How can I achieve this the best way? I've read something about nginx proxy, but don't know if that's what I should use? The IDEAL way (for me) would be to now even touch the running server. I just want to setup the VPS as proxy, forward the DNS to the proxy instead, and let the proxy take over the connection to the primary server. Is that possible? I would really like to hear your opinions about this, and how you would do this (would be happy if you could link me to some tutorial)! :) The VPS is running CentOS and the running/primary is running Debian. • Vista Startup - Cannot Find the File Specified

  Yesterday I restarted my laptop because my Wi-Fi catcher wasn't working correctly, and when the computer reached the login screen, instead of showing my user account it said "Cannot find the file specified". I rebooted and ran the Startup Repair and Memory Diagnostics but nothing showed up. I also took the battery out for a minute and tried again but still no luck. The weird thing is that I cannot even boot into safe mode, it still shows the same error. I don't remember downloading or opening anything suspicious recently, and I have 3 different cleaners/anti-malware programs as well that I usually run about once a week. I did go into the registry recently but I didn't modify or delete anything as I was only checking to see if I had a certain key in it. I have a Dell laptop running Vista Home Basic SP2. If I have to I can reinstall the OS with the CD or even take it to Best Buy but I'd rather try and fix it first. Thanks.

• win7-64sp1: Rename folder (including zip file) error popup

  With the install of win7-64sp1 I get a windows explorer popup on any folder rename including .zip files. "Could not find this item" They are referring to the old name. What a bug. If I click "Try Again' the popup goes away, folder is renamed. Lots of posts on the net about this but no fixes. I tried a registry patch (that I shouldn't have) and it did nothing to fix. My experience with Microsoft is that they will never fix this, and want me to buy windows 8. This started happening after the install of sp1. I posted in one of the zillions of ridiculously byzantine and almost useless Microsoft forums but expect no answer there. They'll probably tell me to reinstall windows.

My video card is struggling with the latest releases, so vitally should I ditch the video card and go for something newer (ATI 7850, GTX 660?) or try and get another 5850 for crossfire support? Bearing in mind 5850's are sort of hard to come buy now as they are not stocked in shops usually, which means they have to be bought second hand.

  I've always run Linux on my home computers, and done PC repair for years, but this is my first experience with needing to buy a SAN. I thought I was knowledgeable, but I feel a bit lost. I need to be able to support 25 VMs, which are currently managed through vSphere. The company I'm at is growing quickly though, so I'd like to plan for the future. Ideally, I want a solution that I can just tack arrays onto and manage as one large, iSCSI drive. Suggestions? Good resources? If I can find something that appears to software as one large drive, am I better off going with a solution like FreeNAS or Starwind, or an all-in-one proprietary solution like NetApp? • Gradle + Robolectric: Where do I put the file org.robolectric.Config.properties?

  I'm trying to setup a test using Robolectric to click on a menu button in this repository. Basic Robolectric tests will run, but I'm not able to run any project-specific test using resources because it says it can't find my AndroidManifest.xml. After running ../gradlew clean check, here's the standard output from the Robolectric html file: WARNING: No manifest file found at ./AndroidManifest.xml.Falling back to the Android OS resources only. To remove this warning, annotate your test class with @Config(manifest=Config.NONE). I found these instructions which indicate I should create an org.robolectric.Config.properties file, but I'm not sure where to put it. I've tried everywhere, pretty much, and despite moving the file, the path in the error message is always the same as above (./AndroidManifest.xml). This makes me think the build process has never picked up the settings in the file org.robolectric.Config.properties. I also tried the @Config(manifest="") directive but this gave me a cannot find symbol error. If I move the AndroidManifest.xml into my project directory, then I get an error about it not being able to find the path ./res/values and I wasn't able to resolve that either. Any ideas? Update 1 Thanks Eugen, I'm now using @RunWith(RobolectricGradleTestRunner.class) instead of @RunWith(RobolectricTestRunner).
