    Hi, all. I have application with 2 groups of models - content based (news, questions) and "something" based (devices, applications etc). I need to link all models between groups - for example question may belongs to 3 different things - one application and 2 devices. The same - for news. From other side - i need to see all news articles and questions related to some application or device. Any idea how to develop this in rails? I have only one idea - mixins that will add methods content_id and thing_id to models and join table.

I want to develop an authentication scheme which is based on biometrics, Every human being have a unique key-hold time,digraph time error rate. Key-Hold Time : Time difference between pressing and releasing a key . Digraph Time : Time difference between releasing one and pressing next one. Error Rate : No of times backspace is pressed. I got these metrics from a paper "Keystroke-based User Identification on Smart Phones" by Saira Zahid1, Muhammad Shahzad1, Syed Ali Khayam1,2, Muddassar Farooq1. I was planning to get the datasets to test my algorithm from openmoko phone, but the phone is mis-behaving and I am finding trouble in generating these time data-sets. If anyone can help me or tell me a good source of data sets for the 3 metrics I defined, it will be a great help. Thanks Aditya

    I'm trying to write a LINQ query and am having problems. I'm not sure if lambda expressions are the answer or not but I think they may be. I have two combo boxes on my form: "State" and "Color". I want to select Widgets from my database based on the values of these two dropdowns. My widgets can be in one of the following states: Not Started, In Production, In Finishing, In Inventory, Sold. Widgets can have any color in the 'color' table in the database. The 'state' combobox has selections "Not Sold," "In Production/Finishing", "Not Started," "In Production," "In Finishing," "In Inventory," "Sold." (I hope these are self-explanatory.) The 'color' dropdown has "All Colors," and a separate item for each color in the database. How can I create a LINQ query to select the widgets I want from the database based on the dropdowns?

  • Probation is Over: PASS Board Year 1, Q2

    Though it's not always official every job begins with a probation period. You start out with lots of questions and every day you find out how much more you have to learn. Usually after a few months you discover that you can actually answer some questions and have at least an idea of what you are supposed to be doing. Now at the end of my second quarter on the "job" of serving on the PASS Board I have reached that point. My probation period is over. The last three months were busy for the entire Board with the budget process, an in-person meeting and moving forward with PASS Global Growth plans. I had also set a specific goal for myself for my 2nd quarter: to see the Board to adopt a Code of Conduct for the PASS Summit. Code of Conduct When I ran for the Board I included my desire to see PASS establish a code of conduct in my campaign platform.  I was motivated to do this for a few reasons. Other technical conferences have had incidents of harassment. Most of these did not have a policy in place prior to having a problem, though several conference organizers have since adopted anti-harassment policies or codes of conduct. I felt it would be in PASS' interest to establish a policy so we would be prepared should there be an incident.   "This is Community" Adopting a code of conduct would reinforce our community orientation and send a message about the positive character of the Summit. PASS is a leader among technical organizations for its promotion and support of women. Adopting a code of conduct would further demonstrate our leadership in this area. After researching similar polices from other organizations I published a first draft in April. I solicited feedback from the Board, HQ staff and some PASS members. Incorporating that feedback I presented version 4 at the May Board meeting, where we had a good discussion. You can read the meeting minutes for details. I incorporated points from  the Board discussion as well as feedback from a legal review to produce a final version which has been submitted to the Board. It will be discussed at the Board meeting July 12. You can read the full text at the end of this post. Virtual Chapters In the first quarter we started ramping up marketing support for the Virtual Chapters. Since then each edition of the Connector has highlighted a different VC to help get out the message about the variety of eductional opporutnities that are offered. These VC profiles will continue in the coming months. I was very pleased to welcome the new DBA Fundamentals VC which is geared toward new DBAs, people who are considering entering the field and those transitioning from a different IT role. Thanks to the contributions of Erin Stellato, Michelle Nalliah and Karla Landrum we published a "Virtual Chapter Guidebook". This document includes great advice on how to build and promote a VC. It's also a reference for how things work, from budgets to webinar hosting. I think this document will be extremely valuable to all our VC leaders and am grateful to those who put it together. Board Meeting/SQL Rally The Board met in May in Dallas. Among the items discussed were Global Growth, the budget, future events and the upcoming elections. We covered a lot of ground in two days and I will again refer you to the meeting minutes for details. The meeting schedule allowed us to participate in the SQL Rally networking events and one full day of the conference. I enjoyed having the opportunity to meet and talk with many PASS members. And my hat is off to the SQL Rally organizers who put on an outstanding event. Global Growth PASS has undertaken a major intitiative to reach and engage SQL Server professionals around the world. This Global Growth plan is ambitious and will have a significant impact on the strategic direction of the organization. We have been reaching out to the community for feedback, including hosting Twitter chats and live Town Hall meetings. I co-hosted two of these events and appreciated hearing the different perspectives of the people who participated If you have not done so I encourage you to read about the Global Growth vision and proposed governance changes  and submit your feedback. FY13 Budget July 1 is the beginning of PASS' fiscal year, which makes the end of June the deadline for approving a budget. Each director submits a budget for his or her portfolio. For the Virtual Chapter portfolio I focused on how we can allocate resources to grow the VCs. Budgeting is a give-and-take process, and while I didn't get everything I asked for I'm pleased the FY13 budget includes a significant increase in financial support for the Virtual Chapters. Many people put a lot of work into the budget, but no two people deserve credit more than VP of Finance Douglas McDowell and Accounting Manager Sandy Cherry. Thanks to both of them for getting us across the goal line on time. SQL Saturday I attended SQL Saturdays in Orange Co. CA and Phoenix. It's always inspiring to see the enthusiasm in the community for learning and networking. These events are successful due to the hard work of many volunteers. Thanks to the organizers in both cities for all your efforts. Next Up This quarter we'll be gearing up plans for the VCs at the Summit and exploring ways the VCs can best support PASS' Global Growth work. I'll also be wrapping up work on the Code of Conduct and attending a Board meeting in September. And I will be at SQL Saturday #144 in Sacramento later this month.   • Activate different Maven profiles depending on current module?

    We have a multi module build with modules using different technologies, like Java and Flex. Is it somehow possible to activate different profiles based on the module that is compiled currently? I tried it with an activation like <profile> <id>flex</id> <activation> <file> <exists>${basedir}/src/main/flex</exists> </file> </activation> ... </profile But it didn't work, although the use of ${basedir} is documented in the Maven documentation (this is a bug in Maven). Is there a different possibility to have different activations based on the current module? Or does Maven only allow to activate a profile for all modules or not at all?

What am really looking at is the best approach to cache the the indexpublic script does get quite some hits and I would live to avoid the Zend MVC overhead if possible.

  • BizTalk and SQL: Alternatives to the SQL receive adapter. Using Msmq to receive SQL data

    If we have to get data from the SQL database, the standard way is to use a receive port with SQL adapter. SQL receive adapter is a solicit-response adapter. It periodically polls the SQL database with queries. That’s only way it can work. Sometimes it is undesirable. With new WCF-SQL adapter we can use the lightweight approach but still with the same principle, the WCF-SQL adapter periodically solicits the database with queries to check for the new records. Imagine the situation when the new records can appear in very broad time limits, some - in a second interval, others - in the several minutes interval. Our requirement is to process the new records ASAP. That means the polling interval should be near the shortest interval between the new records, a second interval. As a result the most of the poll queries would return nothing and would load the database without good reason. If the database is working under heavy payload, it is very undesirable. Do we have other choices? Sure. We can change the polling to the “eventing”. The good news is the SQL server could issue the event in case of new records with triggers. Got a new record –the trigger event is fired. No new records – no the trigger events – no excessive load to the database. The bad news is the SQL Server doesn’t have intrinsic methods to send the event data outside. For example, we would rather use the adapters that do listen for the data and do not solicit. There are several such adapters-listeners as File, Ftp, SOAP, WCF, and Msmq. But the SQL Server doesn’t have methods to create and save files, to consume the Web-services, to create and send messages in the queue, does it? Can we use the File, FTP, Msmq, WCF adapters to get data from SQL code? Yes, we can. The SQL Server 2005 and 2008 have the possibility to use .NET code inside SQL code. See the SQL Integration. How it works for the Msmq, for example: ·         New record is created, trigger is fired ·         Trigger calls the CLR stored procedure and passes the message parameters to it ·         The CLR stored procedure creates message and sends it to the outgoing queue in the SQL Server computer. ·         Msmq service transfers message to the queue in the BizTalk Server computer. ·         WCF-NetMsmq adapter receives the message from this queue. For the File adapter the idea is the same, the CLR stored procedure creates and stores the file with message, and then the File adapter picks up this file. Using WCF-NetMsmq adapter to get data from SQL I am describing the full set of the deployment and development steps for the case with the WCF-NetMsmq adapter. Development: 1.       Create the .NET code: project, class and method to create and send the message to the MSMQ queue. 2.       Create the SQL code in triggers to call the .NET code. Installation and Deployment: 1.       SQL Server: a.       Register the CLR assembly with .NET (CLR) code b.      Install the MSMQ Services 2.       BizTalk Server: a.       Install the MSMQ Services b.      Create the MSMQ queue c.       Create the WCF-NetMsmq receive port. Basically I have a Resource at the lowest level and I would like to provide a number of organisational groupings for that resource in the form of labels. If anyone has implemented something like that I would like to hear your views. My idea is to have within the Resource instance a List<Label>.   • Proper way in MVVM to drive visual states.

    Given a content presenter that can display one of 4 different application pages, and I want to fade/otherwise animate a transition between pages based on view model state. Ideally I'd like to have these all defined within a DataTemplate, and then trigger transitions based on an enum from the view model, so that when some enum representing state changes, the transitions trigger to the appropriate page. Is there a known best practice to handle things like this? Immediately coming to mind is the possibiltiy to use Enter and Exit actions on data triggers to play storyboards, but this definately doesn't use the parts and states model, so I'd like to shy away from that. I've also tried using the DataStateSwitchBehavior from the codeplex Expression project, but found it to be incompatable with the latest builds of WPF 4.0/Blend 4 RC's SDK. Does anyone have any ideas on how to handle this elegantly? I'm using the MVVM-Light framework. Also I'd like to point out that as long as this resides on a DataTemplate in a Resource Dictionary, code-behind is not an option without refactoring.

    I know the "Sales pitch" answer is yes to this question, but is it technically true. The Common Language Runtime (CLR) is designed as an intermediate language based on Imperative Programming (IP), but this has obvious implications when dealing with Declarative Programming (DP). So how efficient is a language based on a different paradigm than the Imperative Style when implemented in the CLR? I also get the feeling that the step to DP would incur an extra level of abstraction that might not model at all performant, would this be a fair comment? I have done some simple tests using F# and it all looks great, but am I missing something if the programs get more complex?

  • Good piece of software that can manage the creation of complex web forms, including reporting, etc?

    I have some clients who are requesting for some of their reasonably complex paper-based forms to be converted in to web forms. There's straight Q&A text input stuff, there's questions based around checkboxes, radio boxes, select boxes, maybe the occasional attached image, there's data that has to be entered in a tabular fashion, etc. I am deciding whether I should build a "platform" with properly normalised tables to store all types of form data. But before that, I thought I had better check and see if there is anything like that already on the market. I am looking for a product that can: * Easily create web forms of all types * Store all data in a database * Extensive reporting capability I have had a bit of a look around but there's not a whole lot I can see. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

I add all of the elements on the menu programatically via DB. the menu is designed for easy use with arrows keys but I have encountered a major problem!!! by default when I press the arrow keys they only change the focus based on the tabindex and what I need is to change focus based on position of the controls not on their tabindex hope it is clear... see pic!!! so, Is there any way to do this?

  • Accurate Timings with Oscilloscopes on PC

    In the world of embedded software (firmware) it is fairly common to observe the order of events, take timings and optimise a program by getting it to waggle PIO lines and capturing their behavior on an oscilloscope. In days gone by it was possible to toggle pins on the serial and parallel ports to achieve much the same thing on PC-based software. This made it possible to capture host PC-based software events and firmware events on the same trace and examine host software/firmware interactions. Now, my new laptop ... no serial or parallel ports! This is increasingly the case. So, does anyone have any suggestions as to go about emitting accurate timing signals off a "modern" PC? It strikes me that we don't have any immediately programmable, lag-free output pins left. The solution needs to run off a laptop, so using add-on cards that only plug into desktops are not permitted.

    For arguments sake, say that we create a web application , that depends on a GPLv3 licensed component, lets say Ext JS. Based on Section 0 of the license, the common notion is that the entire web application (the client side javascript) falls under the definition of a covered work: A “covered work” means either the unmodified Program or a work based on the Program. and that it will therefor have to be distributed under the same license Ok, so here comes the fun part: This is a short 'program' that is based on Ext JS var myPanel = new Ext.Panel(); The question that arises is: Have I now violated the GPL by not including the source of Ext JS and its license? The code conveyed by me to you is in a non-functional state - it will have to be combined with the actual source of Ext JS, which you(your browser) will have to retrieve, from a source made public by someone else to be usable. Now, if the answer to the above is no, how does me conveying this code in visible form differ from the 'invisible' form conveyed by my web server? As a side note, a very similar thing is done in Linux with many projects that depends on less permissive licenses - the user has to retrieve these on its own and make these available for the primary lib/executable. How is this not the same if the user is informed on beforehand that he (the browser) will have to retrieve the needed resources from a different source? Just to make it clear, I'm pro FLOSS, and I have also published a number of projects licensed under more permissive licenses. The reason I'm asking this is that I still haven't found anyone offering a definitive answer to this.

  • Create list in existing site collection from a feature

    I have created a feature, a publishing site, in Visual Studio to MOSS - this feature contains a masterpage, some page-templates, some site columns (grouped to match each page-template) and som custom list templates etc. I have also created a site collection, some sites and pages based on my feature. Now I have upgraded the code in my feature - I wanted a ListInstance to be created based on my custom list template. When I have upgraded my SharePoint (using WSPBuilder), the ListInstance and default data are visible if I create a new site collection, but existing site collection does not get the ListInstance and data. Is there anything I can do to update existing site collections to contain the ListInstance when upgrading?

  • Alignment of Hebrew Vowel points in Android

    I want to display Hebrew text with vowel points (nikkud) using the Canvas.drawText interface. The vowel points come out misaligned, as in the following image taken using a Motorola Defy+ device: The hiriq is between the resh and the yod, the holam between the vav and nun. I have added the rtl code (\u200F) to the string at both ends, no joy. I know that there are applications that have solved this problem, such as the Smart Siddur. Is there a difference between text-based applications and graphics based? I would think that the same engine renders the text in both cases. I suppose I could split up the string and place the vowels separately, but that seems pretty painful and not extensible. TIA for any clues.

  • What do the different columns (of letters) mean for the svn merge output?

    The output of SVN merge has 4 columns of letters listed before the file name. I understand the meaning of the letters (mostly) but I can't find any information on the meanings of the columns and so only have a vague understanding based on context. Can anyone point me to the documentation on this? Based on context I've been able to infer that column: Is about text changes to a file Seems to be related to use of the svn ignore command on a folder (or maybe it's just properties of the file?) I've never seen a letter in the third column and hence I have no idea what it means. Might be tree conflicts? This is the one I'm mostly worried about because I don't know how to handle it yet.
