• Installation stops with cmd.exe window on Laptop

  I am installing W7 Ent on an LG R580. I am working with a valid ISO (installs perfect on other systems). During the installation, before the installation window, the process hangs, and I get a black, cmd.exe screen with the following: Select Administrator: X:\windows\system32\cmd.exe Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601] with a prompt for: X:\windows\system32 My keyboard at that time only prints capital letters with '^' before each. Only thing that I am able to do is reboot. In the bios, I tried to disable USB Legacy ( thinking the problem is with my DVD ) - did not help.

• TechEd 2012: Office, SharePoint And More Office

  I haven’t spent any time looking at Office 365 up to this point.  I met Donovan Follette on the flight down from Chicago.  I also got to spend some time discussing the product offerings with him at the TechExpo and that sealed my decision to attend this session. The main actor of his presentation is the BCS – Business Connectivity Services. He explained that while this feature has existed in on-site SharePoint it is a valuable new addition to Office 365 SharePoint Online.  If you aren’t familiar with the BCS, it allows you to leverage non-SharePoint enterprise data source from SharePoint.  The greatest benefactor is the end users who can leverage the data using a variety of Office products and more.  The one thing I haven’t shaken my skepticism of is the use of SharePoint Designer which Donovan used to create a WCF service.  It is mostly my tendency to try to create solutions that can be managed through the whole application life cycle.  It the past migrating through test environments has been near impossible with anything other than content created by SharePiont Designer. There is a lot of end user power here.  The biggest consideration I think you need to examine when reaching from you enterprise LOB data stores out to an online service and back is that you are going to take a performance hit.  This means that you have to be very aware of how you configure these integrated self serve solutions.  As a rule make sure you are using the right tool for the right situation. • DBCC MEMUSAGE in 2005/8 ?

  I used to like using undocumented command DBCC MEMUSAGE in SQL 2000 to see which tables were using space in SQL data cache. In SQL 2005, this command is not longer present. Instead a DMV – sys.dm_os_buffer_descriptors – can be used to display data cache contents,  but this doesn’t quite give you the same output as DBCC MEMUSAGE. I’m also aware that you can use Quest’s spotlight tool to view a summary of data cache contents. Using  this post by Umachandar Jayachandran  of Microsoft, I was able to create the following equivalent for SQL 2005/8. However, I think the results of this query should still be of interest to a DBA. I have another post to come shortly regarding an example I encountered where this information proved useful to me… I notice in SQL 2008, sys.dm_os_buffer_descriptors gained an extra column – numa_mode – I’m interested to see how this is populated and how useful this column can be on a NUMA-enabled system. I’m assuming in theory you could use this column to help analyse how your tables are spread across Numa-enabled data-cache ?

• Where is the SQL Azure Development Environment

  Recently I posted an entry explaining that you can develop in Windows Azure without having to connect to the main service on the Internet, using the Software Development Kit (SDK) which installs two emulators - one for compute and the other for storage. That brought up the question of the same kind of thing for SQL Azure. The short answer is that there isn’t one. While we’ll make the development experience for all versions of SQL Server, including SQL Azure more easy to write against, you can simply treat it as another edition of SQL Server. For instance, many of us use the SQL Server Developer Edition - which in versions up to 2008 is actually the Enterprise Edition - to develop our code. We might write that code against all kinds of environments, from SQL Express through Enterprise Edition. We know which features work on a certain edition, what T-SQL it supports and so on, and develop accordingly. We then test on the actual platform to ensure the code runs as expected. You can simply fold SQL Azure into that same development process. When you’re ready to deploy, if you’re using SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2 or higher, you can script out the database when you’re done as a SQL Azure script (with change notifications where needed) by selecting the right “Engine Type” on the scripting panel: (Thanks to David Robinson for pointing this out and my co-worker Rick Shahid for the screen-shot - saved me firing up a VM this morning!) Will all this change? Will SSMS, “Data Dude” and other tools change to include SQL Azure? Well, I don’t have a specific roadmap for those tools, but we’re making big investments on Windows Azure and SQL Azure, so I can say that as time goes on, it will get easier. For now, make sure you know what features are and are not included in SQL Azure, and what T-SQL is supported. • Weird video problem with Linux variants

  I decided recently I wanted to give Linux a go so I first download a Ubuntu boot CD. The boot menu came up fine, and then a glowing Ubuntu logo was in the middle of the screen for a while. Then the screen was flickering orange and black. I guess this is where the GUI should of came up. Pushing Ctrl+Alt+F1 brought me to the command prompt OK. I thought this may have something to do with Ubuntu, so I downloaded Linux Mint. The same sort of thing happened. It booted fine, displayed it's logo for a while and then flickered, only green and black this time. Does this sound like a video card problem? How can I resolve this? Many thanks

• HP OfficeJet 5600 w/ Dlink DPR1260 not printing except from Notepad

  I have an OfficeJet5600 attached to a Dlink DPR1260 wireless print router. It has worked great for a long time. Today we had a power outage and the thing was inaccessible. I reset the DPR1260 and reinstalled drivers and soforth. I can now print from Notepad, but not from any Office programs, IE, or Chrome. I have toggled on and off many settings such as spooling/not spooling, etc. Nothing has helped. Any ideas? I have Windows Vista.

• Ubuntu Studio Audio Issue with Alsa - No sound

  Spec: OS: Ubuntu Studio 13.10 64bit CPU: AMD FX 4100 Quad Core Memory: 6GB DDR3 Video: Radeon HD 4250 (embedded on the mobo) Sound: Delta 66 PCI Issue: I just installed Ubuntu Studio and found out that the streaming audio on a few common website such as Youtube had no sound, and also my CD/DVDs via a player. Thus, in the terminal, I entered: sudo alsa force-reload It actually worked but the sound/audio output was MONO and NOT Stereo (the sources are set to stereo stereo), and it seemed I was not able to locate any settings that can switch the output sound to stereo at all. I went through many forums and eventually "autoremove" pulseaudio since many said I would not be able to utilize both pulseaudio and alsa in this case. Now, I have no audio whatsoever. Does this version of Ubuntu only offer mono sound/audio no matter what I do? Then, I may just need to ditch the whole thing and go back to Windows, which I don't want to since Ubuntu Studio offers many great apps, soundfonts etc.. I have also installed restricted extra, but even after rebooting, it did not resolve the issue. In the terminal mode, I pulled "alsamixer" and unmuted almost everything. But still no sound after a reboot. Just an FYI, I have no saved data under this version of Ubuntu Studio yet, so please feel free to let me know whether I need to install Studio 12.10 instead or mess with some installing/uninstalling apps/plug-ins, etc... If it breaks at some point, all I need to do is to re-install it, which I do not mind at all. Or, if you can provide me a step by step instruction to get this work, I do not mind clean install the Studio 13.10 then wait for your instruction AT ALL!

• how to set up ubuntu LAMP stack /var/www similar to the xampp htdocs for http://localhost

  In xampp, all anyone has to do is to place a folder inside htdocs and http://localhost/folder_name will automatically work. If i set up a LAMP stack using sudo tasksel in ubuntu, how do i do it such that if i put a folder inside /var/www the same thing would happen as in localhost/folder_name would work? update sorry all, i have chosen to do things in a different way hence this question is no longer relevant to me. I apologise. I have awarded upticks to all answers here. Thanks for the suggestion.

• Testing home directory scripts by setting $HOME to the location of the test directory

  I have an interdependent collection of scripts in my ~/bin directory as well as a developed ~/.vim directory and some other libraries and such in other subdirectories. I've been versioning all of this using git, and have realized that it would be potentially very easy and useful to do development and testing of new and existing scripts, vim plugins, etc. using a cloned repo, and then pull the working code into my actual home directory with a merge. The easiest way to do this would seem to be to just change & export $HOME, eg cd ~/testing; git clone ~ home export HOME=~/testing/home cd ~ screen -S testing-home # start vim, write/revise plugins, edit scripts, etc. # test revisions However since I've never tried this before I'm concerned that some programs, environment variables, etc., may end up using my actual home directory instead of the exported one. Is this a viable strategy? Are there just a few outliers that I should be careful about? Is there a much better way to do this sort of thing?

• Building php-devel package from source (php 5.3)

  I am building PHP 5.3 rpm packages for our custom CentOS 5 yum repo. I am fairly new to building rpms to be honest, but I have had moderate success downloading the SRPMS for a given package and repackaging them using "rpmbuild --rebuild" command. One thing that is throwing me off though is how to satisfy the php-devel package.. I obviously have the PHP 5.3 source files as I was able to build my php-common and other packages with it. But I am not sure how to actually build the devel package! From what I understand, I already have most of what I need - the latest php 5.3.5 source tarball. However I am not sure how to build the correct .spec file to satisfy what I need. If you are knowledgeable in this area, would you mind helping a fellow sysadmin out? Sharing a spec file or at least giving me some pointers on how to approach it. Thanks much serverfault community! -BajaBob

• Fedora12, XP and connection sharing via iptables

  Just a quick question ( I Hope ) To find out if what I'm trying is even possible. I am trying to share internet connection with Fedora12 as default gateway and XP machine hooked up via NIC using iptables commands as shown in Mark Sobell's book 'A Practical Guide To Fedora And Red Hat Enterprise Linux' These are the commands as placed in /etc/rc.local iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -o eth0 -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o eth1 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -j LOG iptables -t NAT -A POSTROUTING -o eth1 -j MASQUERADE I did flip the in and out parameters to match my NIC configuration ( as opposed to example from book ) but other than that followed example. One thing to note is that Sobell did not mention whether this should work with mix of Linux and XP. One other note ( maybe meaningless ) is that I do have samba working between the two machines. • Set-and-forget Windows backup software with NAS-support?

  I am looking for set-and-forget backup software for Windows (Vista & 7, and if possible XP/2003). The idea is that it runs in the background on the clients, and does its thing towards a network-share. In case the HDD of one of these clients spontaneously combusts, all I want to have to do is: replace the drive, insert a USB-stick, boot from it, and restore the machine. It should support drives which use [ICH]-RAID. What are my options here? It looks like WHS meets all the requirements, but I am curious about my other options here.

• Which Single Source Publishing tools and strategies are available?

  I'm about to write a 1000-Pages Documentation about a huge programming framework. The goal is to bring this documentation online into an web platform, so that online users can search through it and read it online. At the same time, the text has to be made public in PDF format for download. And at the same time, the whole thing needs to go into a printed book as well (print on demand, they want a giant PDF file with the whole book). The PDF files: The whole content is divided into several chapters. Every chapter will be available as a standalone PDF eBook. And finally, all chapters will be available in one huge printed book. Is LaTeX capable for something like that? Can it be used for Single Source Publishing? Or would I have to take a look at other technologies like DocBook, etc.?

  We’ve been showing you fun flash games to play during company time on a Friday afternoon. Hopefully while playing them, you haven’t received a “talking to”. Today we show you some cool games to play that look like productivity apps, so the boss will be none the wiser. The website cantyouseeimbusy.com has developed some very neat little games that look like productivity apps like Word and Excel. These apps look exactly like some project you would be working on, but are really neat little games. Here we take a look at three cool ones on the site called Breakdown, Leadership, and Cost Cutter. Leadership Leadership is a cool game that looks like something you would be working in Excel and is a spin off of the classic game Moon Lander. You navigate your ship through a variety of challenging line graphs. Breakdown This one is a knock off of the classic game Break Out. Use your mouse to scroll the racket at the bottom and bounce the ball off of the text in the document. Press the space bar to pause the game and the elements will disappear…good for when the boss comes around. Cost Cutter This one is a puzzle game where it looks like your working on some bar charts in Excel. You need to click combinations of two or more blocks that are the same color. Again, hit the spacebar and the game elements will disappear. If you’re looking for a way to goof off with some simple games without the boss knowing, these will definitely do the trick. • What NIS maps are needed for OSX 10.6 to authenticate?

  What NIS maps are necessary for OSX 10.6 to authenticate? I have an ubuntu-sever sharing NIS, and from the OSX client, ypcat passwd, ypcat group and (as root) ypcat shadow.byname all work, and return the correct info. If I type groups kyle (a user in NIS, but not on the local machine), I get all the correct group information. The only thing that doesn't work, is logging in. (And yes, if I point an ubuntu box to that NIS server, everything authenticates off of it just fine).

• Wubi doens't work anymore - shows 'No wubildr' error

  Basics: HP Mini 311 Ubuntu netbook edition 10.04 (installed via Wubi) Symptoms: I load to Windows Boot Manager as usual. Options are Windows 7 and Ubuntu Netbook, like usual. Selecting Windows 7 does as it should. Loading Ubuntu Netbook, though, does not take me to the usual screen where it lets me select versions of Ubuntu (sorry for bad wording, not sure what the real name is called; it's where you select from about 6 items; I always picked the first due to lack of knowledge without issue). Instead it flashes an error in white on a black screen then restarts very quickly. It took me a few restarts, but here is the error: Try (hd0,0): NTSF5 No wubildr Try (hd0,1): NTSF5: Situation: I have no clue what caused it. The only thing I did last night on Ubuntu was install Skype, but the mic didn't work instantly so I got lazy and switched to Windows 7 and used Skype on there. When I tried to switch back to Ubuntu it began this. (There may be something I forget... it was 5 in the morning). There were no recent updates that I remember. No weird activity. Just... random. Help please?

• How to stream H264 Video from camera over FTP?

  I bought a h264 security camera system last year and set it up to ftp video to my computer. I was able to get the video to play (even though it played a little fast) on Ubuntu 11.04 using mplayer. A few months ago, I did a fresh install of 12.04 and I cannot seem to get the video to play with mplayer, smplayer or VLC. I have the restricted formats video packages installed and when playing with any of the players, all I get is a gray video. When calling mplayer from the command line to play the video with no options, I get a lot of these errors: [h264 @ 0x7f278c61f280]concealing 1320 DC, 1320 AC, 1320 MV errors No pts value from demuxer to use for frame! pts after filters MISSING I'm not a video expert and have been coming up with a lot of dead ends when Googling for this. Could someone offer some advice about how to play these videos? • Windows boots to Black Screen of Death — Is my HDD faulty?

  My wife's PC suddenly stopped booting up properly. It gets as far as the Windows 'loading' screen with the bar scrolling away, but that's as far as it gets for some time, then suddenly flashes up a BSoD barely long enough to see, then the display cuts out. We've got identical PCs, and after swapping components, I established that my PC suffers the same problem if I swap in the HDD. Even if I plug hers in as a second HDD on my machine, it still does the same thing, even though it's booting from mine. I can't even boot her machine from CD or DVD either, so I couldn't even use a recovery disc. I did manage to partially boot my PC into safe mode with the other HDD attached, and it got as far as loading 'crcdisk.sys' and froze. Anybody know what could be wrong with it, or at least how I can get the data off the disk? I'm assuming there's still data on the disk, given that it at least shows me the vista 'loading' screen.

  The KISS principal is a highly quoted design mantra. The aim of this principle is to stamp out unnecessary complexity on a project. This is a good thing, saving time, energy and money. It can lead to a relatively stress free implementation and a simple, elegant, maintainable end product. A lot of discussion on KISS provides mechanisms to simplify requirements, design and implementation. Things that spring to mind include: avoid scope creep; simple obvious design and code; minimal run-time dependencies; refactoring to maintain simplicity; etc. However there are a lot of implicit things that we do to KISS. Examples: small team sizes; minimal management layers; tidy desk; mastery of a single IDE; clear concise error messages; scripts to automate/encapsulate tasks; etc The purpose of this question is to derive a checklist of KISS items. I'm especially interested in non-obvious items.

• Open Source webapp that shows PC / Projector status in 30+ Lecture rooms

  I am looking for a simple web application that only has a simple graphical representation of the current status of 30+ lecture rooms. I.e. Green = good, Red=bad i.e. PC or Projector not working. With a little message and a ETA as well. I am not looking for monitoring software, merely a way for a tech to flag a room as "technically challenged" until 1PM or until "Friday 10AM". With a message for those lecturers who are interested: "Waiting on replacement bulb" or "Power supply gone" I know this is a simple thing to code up yourself, but I am looking for something that has been around for a few years that has some cool extra little functionality that you wouldn't think of yourself. I just can't find anything like that out there. And just to be clear: not monitoring software, more like lecturer feedback web app.

• Create Webmin user for an EC2 Instance

  I've setup an Amazon EC2 Instance, using the Ubuntu 12.04 AMI (ubuntu/images/ebs/ubuntu-precise-12.04-amd64-server-20120424 (ami-a29943cb)), and I'd like to get Webmin working (so I can setup a DNS). After following the installation instructions on Webmin's site, the installer says I can login with any username/pass of a user who has superuser access. The problem is that the EC2 instance only has 1 user "ubuntu", which can only login using SSH keys -- not a password! I've tried creating users manually and I can't login as those users (even via SSH), so I think it might be a permission thing provided by the AMI. Does anyone know the best way around setting up a login to my webmin?

• Error message during installation of Windows XP Professional

  During installation of Windows XP Professional the installer had an error which points to a bad CD, so I got another one and tried it, but the same thing happened. What can I do? It says: One of the components Windows needs to continue could not be installed.. The component is called: sys.dll D:/i386/asms/1000/msft/windows/gdiplus/gdiplus.man. I tried running chkdsk /f to fix the errors on the disk. I've searched the internet all day, and I don't know what else to do. I get this error message: SYS.DLL Syntax error in manifest or policy file D:/i386/asms/1000/msft/windows/gdiplus/gdiplus.man on line 4 Error Installation failed d:/I386/asms Error message Data Error (cyclic redundancy check) Fatal error One of the components Windows needs to continue could not be installed. If you are using a CD there might be a problem with the CD try cleaning it and trying again or using another CD.
