• Undesired Output of Crontab Job Using CURL

  I have written a perl script that runs as a daily crontab job that uploads files to Amazon S3 via CURL. I want the output of the cron job emailed to me which works fine but I don't want that email to include messages related to the CURL upload (only those message my script is outputting). • Getting moved out of a development job

  I'm a year out of college and I started my first dev job at a small (<15 people) company several months ago. It was an internship position that recently turned full time. The position started out as development but for full time I got offered a grab bag of positions: qa, docs, call support and some dev work. It's clear that my employers feel I am lacking dev skills, which is true. I did not major in CS in college and did not have much dev experience. However, I'm convinced that I can be a good developer and I will be a good developer once given the chance to write lots of code. My question is simple: what should I do? As I see it, there are two options. Work hard in the non-dev duties so that my employers may eventually give me significant dev responsibilities. Look for a new job where I will be a developer first and an all purpose guy second (if at all). Thanks guys.

• codeigniter cron job with http access

  Sorry if this is a duplicate question...I've searched around and found similar advice but nothing that helps my exact problem. And please excuse the noob questions, CRON is a new thing for me. I have a codeigniter script that scrapes the html DOM of another site and stores some of that in a database. I'd like to run this script at a regular interval. This has lead me to looking into cron jobs. The page I have is at myserver.com/index.php/update I realize I can run a cron job with curl and run this page. If I want to be a bit more secure I can put a string at the end like: myserver.com/index.php/update/asdfh2784fufds And check for that in my CI controller. This seems like it would be mostly secure, but doesn't seem like the "right" way to do things. I've looked into running CI from the command line, and can execute basic pages like: php index.php mycontroller But when I try to do: php index.php update It doesn't work. I suspect this is because it needs to use HTTP to scrape the DOM of the outside page. So, my question: How do I securely run a codeigniter script with a cron job that needs HTTP access?

• Sendmail background process sometimes processes queue, but sendmail -q always works

  I'm using sendmail version 8.14.4 on Fedora 15 to send email. My Rails app uses delayed_job to queue up emails. Messages will queue up in /var/spool/mqueue as expected, but don't always get processed. I can see the messages and sendmail is definitely running in the background. Restarting the process does nothing. However, when I issue the sendmail -q command, sendmail gets to work and starts sending. The really odd thing is that this behavior only occurs sometimes. Other times message queue up and are delivered as expected. I've tried tweaking various sendmail configs to reduce the time between queue processing (for example, adding define('confMIN_QUEUE_AGE', '0')dnl to /etc/mail/sendmail.mc), but nothing seems to do the trick. Any ideas what might be the root cause?

• Shut Down took way too long because of "Background Programs"

  I tried shutting my desktop PC (with Windows7) down but after several attempts (like 4 or 5) at Start -- Shut Down, the GUI was still there and it was not shutting down. I didn't think there were any programs running when I pressed Shut Down, so I went into the taskbar (Ctrl + Alt + Del) to check out the processes. Once I did that, a screen appeared with a message stating that there are "background programs" still running and it gave me an option to "Force Shut Down" which I pressed and it shut down normally. Does anyone know why this would happen?

• Shell Script Launching Child Processes

  Disclaimer: I'm totally new to shell scripting, but have quite a bit of experience in other languages like PHP and Obj-C. I'm writing my first daemon script. Here are the goals: I want it to run in the background I want it to be triggered by an init.d script that includes start/stop/restart commands I want each process in a loop to trigger its own subprocess. When the parent process kicked off by the init.d script is killed, I want the subprocesses to die as well. Essentially, I'm looking for the same kind of behavior that appears to be very common among software like apache, spamd, dovecot, etc. But, based on my research, I haven't found a single, simple answer as to how this kind of thing is achieved. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I want to be able to connect the shell to everything socat can handle (SOCKS 5, UDP, OpenSSL), but also to have a nice shell which correctly interprets all keys, various Ctrl+C/Ctrl+Z, tab completion, up/down keys (with remote history). Update: Found "setsid" socat option. It fixes "no job control". Now trying to fix Ctrl+D. Update 2: socat file:`tty`,raw,echo=0 exec:'bash -li',pty,stderr,setsid,sigint,sane. Not it handles Ctrl+D/Ctrl+Z/Ctrl+C well, I can start Vim inside it, remote history is OK.

• How to retain background colors when pasting between documents in Excel

  I have a script that programatically generates excel spreadsheets - cleaning up ugly reports that are given to us from another organisation. For interests sake; I'm using PHPExcel to generate the "clean" reports. We get these reports every week for an event that happens every couple of months. The reports contain a list of attendees along with a group id that allows us to know that some attendees belong together. To help the event organisers out, I've taken the event ID and generated a unqiue color code (based on the hash of the event ID - truncated to 6 characters). This unique colour code is set as the background color of a cell in each row. This helps organisers quickly visually identify group members. Trouble is, when the organisers copy the rows from the weeks report into the master report (which contains all attendees, not just the ones that signed up this week) - all the colour-codes snap to the master template's color pallette. Mainly wide screen would be for gaming, and portrait for browsing. I'd want the desktop stretching from one to the other (ie drag pointer, apps from one screen to the other) 2) Also do I need separate gfx cards for each monitor or can one cover both? any performance cost? 3) And can I have separate background images for each, seeing as they'll be different resolutions?

  Today I found out that the job which would have been a promotion for me went to an outside candidate. The position is for a systems admin on our LAN team. I have been working on the helpdesk here for almost two years with another two years experience working it prior. While we are the first tier support we also work in AD, monitor and update certain servers and set up and deploy Windows/Mac images for those we support. What I am looking for here is what can I do to better myself to inside/outside places to move up this ladder? I take what I can from my job - working on projects that I can learn from - but what projects should I be volunteering for? What can I do for myself outside to make me a more viable candidate for a systems admin?

I know that IE has an option to print background but Chrome does not. As the end user will print this off, I do not want to find alternatives like a screen grab or save file etc. I want to find a real solution to this. • Different background color for multiple filetypes in vim

  Is it possible to have different background colors in vim (ie. one light, one dark) when dealing with files with multiple filetypes (ie. :set ft=html.php)? In PHP code with HTML embedded, it can be difficult to see one single PHP statement amongst dozens of HTML lines, see below. I'll settle for anything, be it different bg color, a marker in the margin, a second left margin (one vim plugin does this for marks), maybe highlighting the <?php tag for example (although that's less than ideal) EDIT: I don't think this is possible at the syntax level as the syntax appears to use a limited number of elements (String, Function, Identifier...). This is no doubt to allow for the easy integration with colorschemes. SyntaxAttr is a good plugin to demonstrate this. Put it over any part of the code and it will tell you what syntax group it belongs to.

• I can't remove a background image in Powerpoint 2007

  Hello Everyone! I have a Powerpoint 2007 document. There is this annoying background graphic in my Powerpoint slide. I know about slide master, but this little bugger is not something that I can delete from slide master. Argh!!!! • Unable to use autossh in background even with absolute path

  I would love to set autossh to run at boot adding it to /etc/rc.local. This command works: autossh -i /root/.ssh/id_rsa -R 2522:localhost:22 user@address But, if I add the -f option autossh -f -i /root/.ssh/id_rsa -R 2522:localhost:22 user@address The ssh session is not started. As you can see, I'm using an absolute path for my identity file, so this seems to be a different problem from the one stated here: autossh in background does not work From /var/log/syslog: Oct 18 11:08:39 raspberrypi autossh[2417]: starting ssh (count 1) Oct 18 11:08:39 raspberrypi autossh[2417]: ssh child pid is 2418 Oct 18 11:08:39 raspberrypi autossh[2417]: ssh exited with status 0; autossh exiting I'm using it with debian wheezy on a raspberry pi, autossh version 1.4c. Could it be that it's passing the -f option to ssh instead?

• Am I using too much memory? (Rails on EC2 with Resque)

  I am searching for a tool that allows background recording of my pc screen. I it is nothing like a spy tool, I just need to be able to check what I was doing at the some time in the past. Small impact on the system, and relatively small size of recordings, as it is supposed to run all time pc is turned on. Some recording management as auto pruning of recordings older than x days. UPD This is not a problem if some scripting is necessary to achieve what is described in the question. So it could be a command line recording tool which could be used from batch, bash (cygwin, mingw) scripts.

• I want to DEACTIVATE the window's focus, please help me

  I want to disable something for a specific window : the window's ability to get activated or focused. Everytime a window gets a focus or it gets activated( ex: when you click on it ) ,the window appears the top most of all windows. So I want to stay forever in the 'background'. And to do this , maybe I need somehow to remove the possibily of having focus for that windows... EDIt: I know the window can be hided or minimized but I need it displayed on the monitor. • Windows 7 Desktop slideshow

  I have my windows 7 (Home Professional if it matters) set to automatically change the background every 20 minutes with the source of the slideshow as a folder in the Pictures library. Recently, the slideshow has not been functioning. The pictures do not change while the computer is on; they only seem to change when it is shut down (i.e. there is a different desktop on each boot), or about 50% of the time when waking the computer from hibernation. I've changed the time settings, the folder location on the drive, and made sure to disable all programs that tweak the desktop with no luck. Any thoughts?

• Best way to change the background color for an NSView

  I'm looking for the best way to change the background color of an NSView. I'd also like to be able to set the appropriate alpha mask for the NSView. Something like: myView.backgroundColor = [NSColor colorWithCalibratedRed:0.227f green:0.251f blue:0.337 alpha:0.8]; I notice that NSWindow has this method, and I'm not a big fan of the NSColorWheel, or NSImage background options, but if they are the best, willing to use.
