  • Is it possible to skip an LTS upgrade?

    If you want to upgrade from 10.10 to 12.04, then you'll need to follow the upgrade path; 10.10 11.04 11.10 12.04. However, with LTS versions, you can upgrade directly, so that you can upgrade from 10.04LTS to 12.04LTS directly. But now, LTS versions are supported for five years while there's still a new LTS every two years. That means you can choose to skip an LTS. So the question is; will I be able to upgrade from 12.04LTS to 16.04LTS directly, or will I then have to follow the LTS upgrade path; 12.04 14.04 16.04?

    Ein neues Release für Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control ist verfügbar. Es ist das Release 4, oder genauer die Version 12.1.0.4. Der Download steht für alle unterstützten Plattformen seit dem 03.06.2014 auf OTN zur Verfügung.Natürlich gibt es viele Neuerungen, daher können hier nur wenige aufgezählt werden: - Als Repository Datenbank wird jetzt auch die Datenbankversion 12c (als Non-CDB) unterstützt - Das Sicherheitsmodell für zusammengefasste Zieltypen (z.B. Gruppen) wurde geändert. Jetzt kann man Rechte auf die Member einer Grupper vergeben, ohne dass das gleiche Recht auf die Gruppe selbst vergeben werden müsste - Default Preferred Credentials stellen sicher, dass neue EM Benutzer auch ohne weitere Konfiguration arbeiten können - Der Bereich Cloud Management, also der Betrieb einer eigenen Cloud wurde stark weiterentwickelt. - Im Datenbankbereich können die AWR Daten der einzelnen Zieldatenbanken jetzt in ein zentrales AWR Warehouse übertragen und somit besser für längere Zeit gespeichert werden. Somasagar are one of them who put the widget on their blog that show “How much time after Visual studio goes released”. but after post ponding the date I not know where widget was gone. site are down who provide the widget. they use same trick they postponed their  date 20 march to 12 April to release the Visual studio. well wait something more and next time never  believe that it’s really gone to release on certain date they show you on blog.

  • Simple Backup Strategy for Amazon EC2 instances / volumes?

    You have entered Introductory Backups for Amazon EC2 EBS-backed Windows Images 010... I have been browsing my brains out to find a simple backup strategy for our single windows 2008 server running SharePoint Services. This is an EBS-backed image of one server with one data volume. I don’t need anything exotic. I only need a “daily” backup (losing a day’s worth of data is not catastrophic). We have created and saved an EBS backed AMI image (Windows 2008) we are comfortable using. We started off making backups by simply creating a new EBS AMI image. This is really simple, but the running server is put offline during the first 10 – 15 minutes of creating the image – not ideal. The standard way of creating backups would seem to be creating snapshots of volumes attached to a running instance. Again it’s pretty simple and the server remains usable during the snapshot generation. The apparent Catch-22 is that you can’t simply launch a new instance directly from a snapshot. I know how to bundle a running instance to S3 storage and then register the AMI from the S3 bucket. This does allow me to capture a backup of a running instance and, if the running instance is lost, register the AMI from the S3 bucket and launch the new AMI to recover the instance, but this seems really convoluted and it seems ridiculous to have to juggle back and forth between the AWS Console and the S3 Organizer plug-in for Firefox to get this accomplished. (Please don't mention the command line approach, this is an 010 level course). From playing around with EBS-backed images, the following approach appears to work for me (all done within the AWS Console): 1.For your backups, simply snapshot the system volume (/dev/sda1) as needed. 2.If you lose your running instance, do the following: a.Create a new volume from your last snapshot backup b.Launch another instance of your starting AMI (must be EBS-backed) c.Stop this instance. d.Detach the existing system volume from the new stopped instance and discard. e.Attach the newly created volume as system volume (/dev/sda1) to the stopped instance. f.Re-start the new instance. I have tested this out a couple of times and it seems to work for me. Question: Is there anything wrong with this approach?

    Amazon is so technical, I want to confirm that my understanding is correct. We have a large 500 GB database. (OrientDB.) We will have it mirrored to one another in the same Availability Zone. We believe the database size will grow rapidly. The plan is: Get 4 large instances that are compatible types with Placement Groups (as well as ideally, Enhanced Networking) (2 for web, 2 for DB.) We use an EBS-backed instances to store our operating system. Discussion here: http://alestic.com/2012/01/ec2-ebs-boot-recommended We can set up ephemeral SSD instance storage as swap space. (But it is lost after even a reboot. I hear its hard to add ephemeral storage if booting from EBS, but possible.) For offsite backup, we will take periodic snapshots and store them on S3. Obviously we need to ensure the database is in a safe state when that snapshot happens to avoid corruption. (Any hints here, aside from shutting down the DB?) If the database gets too big, we need to create a EBS volume that's larger.     I launched an EBS backed AMI with all the defaults. I noticed that it automicatlly had attached an ephemeral disk.     Started off with a Server Core install to which I then added the GUI with: Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Shell, Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra So far so good, I then removed the GUI again to get back to text only mode with: Remove-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Shell, Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra Now at this point I should beable to use SConfig option 12 to reinstall the GUI again but that SConfig option is missing: "12) Restore Graphical User Interface (GUI)" not present, how can I get SConfig to display this option? Has anyone else noticed that this option is missing. Thanks, Nick

  • Ubuntu Software RAID 0 on AWS Does Not Survive Reboot

    I'm experimenting with creating a software RAID 0 device from 4 EBS volumes on Ubuntu 9.10 running at Amazon AWS following this guide: http://alestic.com/2009/06/ec2-ebs-raid The device appears (and according to SysBench is 3.5x faster than a regular attached EBS volume). Problem is, when I reboot the instance, all files on the RAID device are gone. The device is available and mounted where expected, but contains no files. I am able to write new files to it, which survive until the next reboot.

    I have Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS installed on a VMware machine on Windows 7 host. I seem to have a problem with Kernel headers when trying to install them I did: sudo apt-get install gcc make build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) Reading package lists...   • samba share not on network after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04LTS.

    I just upgraded an old Ubuntu box to 12.04LTS (machine named A-Ubuntu). This is an upgrade not a format re-install. All the accounts and config were preserved. The basic setup is a local network with 2 Ubuntu machines (let say A-Ubuntu, B-Ubuntu) and a MAC (C-MAC). Before the upgrade, all of them could see each other by their names not only the IP address. The local network has a D-Link Router where everybody is connected with RJ-45 wired etherenet (not wi-fi). Since the A-Ubuntu upgrade, we can't see this machine name on the Network and its name is not on machine list in the D-Link router anymore. We can see it's IP address only. I can't access A-Ubuntu from the other two by its name but I can ping it with its address (192.168.0.109). From A-Ubuntu, I can connect and see the shared samba folders on B-Ubuntu and C-MAC. But from B-Ubuntu and C-MAc, I can't connect to A-Ubuntu. Correct me if I'm wrong but this tells me that Samba should be fine and the real problem is that A-Ubuntu does not advertise its name on the Network so the D-Link does not have it in its table so nobody else finds it. After a lot of googling, I see that it is the job of avahi and mdns to do so. Those packages are running, I checked multiple config files for samba, avahi, mdns to see as if it is like the examples on the WEB and also similar to what I find on the working B-Ubuntu machine. This is the same. I did multiple service restart with samba, avahi, remove the firewall to make sure it does not block the hostname broadcast. I rebooted multiple time to make sure the update I was making were effective. Still, Can't see the A-Ubuntu name on the network. Any idea what it can be?, Where to look next?

    Problems I am experiencing: Battery Icon not showing up unity bar (top right corner). Volume Up/Down/Mute not working. Bluetooth hot keys described above also not working.Brightness up/down keys on this keyboard no longer working (apple wireless keyboard) Laptop no longer suspends when lid is shut. I have to go to 'power' button on top right corner and click on 'Suspend' All was working flawlessly until I did the following: I have recently upgraded to Nvidia propriety driver version 319 {version recommended}. Installed Xscreensaver and then removed it and went back to default screensaver. Done a system update (1st since installing) and now currently running: Linux 3.8.0-32-generic #47~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 2 16:19:35 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux NOTE: Base system was ubuntu 12.04.3 installed from ISO however lsb_release reports "No LSB modules are available" 4.installed psensor. I have check power setting (via Settings) and power setting via dconf-editor and set to recommended settings as described in posts detailing solution to this problem. - I have disabled 1) Nvdia settings at startup and 2) psensor at startup but this does not help. I am using an HP DV7 with 2GB Nvidia card. Not using any fancy graphics features. Recommendations? Thanks.

  • Audio comes out of both headphone and speaker at the same time.. Ubuntu 12.04LTS [closed]

    I have the same issue on an Aspire. Ubuntu 12.04LTS 64bit realtek audio sound chip onboard If I plug in a headset, audio does not switch from internal speaker to headset, instead plays out of both at the same time. I have looked at the alsamixer setting, all on. I installed gnome-alsamixer, and I noticed headphone was ticked, if I untick the main audio mutes, and the headphone no longer works. Headset only works with internal speaker.   • Interesting fault attempting to install Ubuntu 12.0.4.3 OR 13.10 on MSI GS70 2OD-001US

    Attempting to install Ubuntu on an MSI GS70 2OD-001US notebook pre-installed with Windows 8. For the record this is what I have attempted: All cases were attempted with Ubuntu 12.0.4.3 AND 13.10 images via USB drives Case 1 - Attempt no changes and simply boot from USB Result: It seems to want to work initially. The Ubuntu logo pops up and the dots start moving. After a few seconds the dots freeze and this screen is shown: http://i.imgur.com/C7pyMRk.jpg Case 2 - Start playing with BIOS - In Windows turning off fast boot - In BIOS turning off Secure boot - In BIOS turning off UEFI and selecting LEGACY Result: Brought to a black screen with a - blinking at me. Case 3 - Alternating BIOS settings - In Windows turning off fast boot - In BIOS turning off Secure boot - in BIOS turning off UEFI and selecting UEFI with CSM Result: Brought to a black screen no other indication of change. It's pretty frustrating to feel locked out of a laptop that I have paid good money for, I'm sure I am not alone in that case. It does however appear that there has been some success, so I am hopeful that someone might be able to help me. FYI: Dual booting is not necessary for me, if that helps at all... I'm not sure if this is a reasonable option, but if I completely wipe clean the hdds, no particle of Windows at all, would this still be a problem? Also would opening up the laptop and replacing the HDDS with brand new ones be a solution as well? Thanks for any input or suggestions.

  • Announcing the Release of Visual Studio 2013 and Great Improvements to ASP.NET and Entity Framework

These releases include a ton of great improvements, and include some fantastic enhancements to ASP.NET and the Entity Framework.  You can download and start using them now. One ASP.NET With the release of Visual Studio 2013, we have taken a step towards unifying the experience of using the different ASP.NET sub-frameworks (Web Forms, MVC, Web API, SignalR, etc), and you can now easily mix and match the different ASP.NET technologies you want to use within a single application. When you do a File-New Project with VS 2013 you’ll now see a single ASP.NET Project option: Selecting this project will bring up an additional dialog that allows you to start with a base project template, and then optionally add/remove the technologies you want to use in it.  For example, you could start with a Web Forms template and add Web API or Web Forms support for it, or create a MVC project and also enable Web Forms pages within it: This makes it easy for you to use any ASP.NET technology you want within your apps, and take advantage of any feature across the entire ASP.NET technology span. Visual Studio Web Tooling Improvements Visual Studio 2013 includes a new, much richer, HTML editor for Razor files and HTML files in web applications. Real-time web functionality is the ability to have server-side code push content to connected clients instantly as it becomes available. SignalR 2.0 introduces a ton of great improvements. We’ve added support for Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) to SignalR 2.0. iOS and Android support for SignalR have also been added using the MonoTouch and MonoDroid components from the Xamarin library (for more information on how to use these additions, see the article Using Xamarin Components from the SignalR wiki). We’ve also added support for the Portable .NET Client in SignalR 2.0 and created a new self-hosting package. This change makes the setup process for SignalR much more consistent between web-hosted and self-hosted SignalR applications. To learn more go to http://www.asp.net/signalr. ASP.NET MVC 5 The ASP.NET MVC project templates integrate seamlessly with the new One ASP.NET experience and enable you to integrate all of the above ASP.NET Web API, SignalR and Identity improvements. You can also customize your MVC project and configure authentication using the One ASP.NET project creation wizard. This release of ASP.NET MVC also supports several nice new MVC-specific features including: Authentication filters: These filters allow you to specify authentication logic per-action, per-controller or globally for all controllers. Attribute Routing: Attribute Routing allows you to define your routes on actions or controllers. To learn more go to http://www.asp.net/mvc Entity Framework 6 Improvements Visual Studio 2013 ships with Entity Framework 6, which bring a lot of great new features to the data access space: Async and Task<T> Support EF6’s new Async Query and Save support enables you to perform asynchronous data access and take advantage of the Task<T> support introduced in .NET 4.5 within data access scenarios.  This allows you to free up threads that might otherwise by blocked on data access requests, and enable them to be used to process other requests whilst you wait for the database engine to process operations. When the database server responds the thread will be re-queued within your ASP.NET application and execution will continue.  This enables you to easily write significantly more scalable server code. Here is an example ASP.NET WebAPI action that makes use of the new EF6 async query methods: Interception and Logging Interception and SQL logging allows you to view – or even change – every command that is sent to the database by Entity Framework. This includes a simple, human readable log – which is great for debugging – as well as some lower level building blocks that give you access to the command and results. Here is an example of wiring up the simple log to Debug in the constructor of an MVC controller: Custom Code-First Conventions The new Custom Code-First Conventions enable bulk configuration of a Code First model – reducing the amount of code you need to write and maintain. Conventions are great when your domain classes don’t match the Code First conventions. For example, the following convention configures all properties that are called ‘Key’ to be the primary key of the entity they belong to. This is different than the default Code First convention that expects Id or <type name>Id. Connection Resiliency The new Connection Resiliency feature in EF6 enables you to register an execution strategy to handle – and potentially retry – failed database operations. This is especially useful when deploying to cloud environments where dropped connections become more common as you traverse load balancers and distributed networks. EF6 includes a built-in execution strategy for SQL Azure that knows about retryable exception types and has some sensible – but overridable – defaults for the number of retries and time between retries when errors occur. Registering it is simple using the new Code-Based Configuration support: These are just some of the new features in EF6. Microsoft OWIN Components Open Web Interface for .NET (OWIN) defines an open abstraction between .NET web servers and web applications, and the ASP.NET “Katana” project brings this abstraction to ASP.NET. OWIN decouples the web application from the server, making web applications host-agnostic. For example, you can host an OWIN-based web application in IIS or self-host it in a custom process.
