• Can I hide running applications from the unity launcher?

  When running UNE 10.10 I often have several applications running which on a traditional GNOME desktop environment would be running purely in the background and would only be visible from the system tray. Good examples would be tomboy when hidden or redshift. Unfortunately Unity shows a running application in the launcher (dock) for these applications even though they already have appindicators visible in the sys tray. Is there any way to configure/force Unity not to show icons in the dock for certain applications?

• Stardict config is not working

  I set Stardict autostart when poweron with option -h (hidden mode) and set scanning key to Alt+Ctrl (translates word if select text and press Alt+Ctrl). My problem is sometimes Stardict's config is not working (Alt+Ctrl is not working seem like program didn't read config). I checked on "~/.stardict/stardict.cfg" every thing it look OK. A Problem seems like Stardict program had ran before read a config file.

• Why doesn't Ubuntu detect my second hard drive?

  I am new to Linux and to Ubuntu, I was wondering, I have two hard drives setup in SATA ports (non-raid, at least I don't think they are). I installed ubuntu unto the drives fresh without any previous versions or windows at all. However when I got the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS working, all I see is 1 x 120 gigabyte harddrive. Also, not sure if this is important or not, my hard drives are SSD. • Deleted files still accessible without www in url

However I discovered that a configuration file was left behind in my home folder. Is there a more powerful command which would remove even that?   just got HP DV6-6145dx Notebook: - AMD Quad-Core A8-3500M Accelerated Processor - 8GB DDR3 SDRAM - AMD Radeon HD 6620G well i removed every thing that related to windows " system, hidden partitions " so that i wont need them. so, i tried to install ubuntu 12.04 64bit and i got a lot of error and crashes -- gives me that ubuntu has an error "executable bath" from the beginning after boot -- other one that said ubuntu installation process crashed and some times the words converted to squares and can't continuing the installation process at all on the other hand i tried the 32bit version, and every thing went smoothly need your help thanks

• Why can't a device connect through a wireless after router restart?

  I've dropbox v1.4.17 installed and I want to change the path from (...)/Dropbox to (...)/dropbox. I think until v1.2 this was done by changing dropbox_path field in the sqlite file ~/.dropbox/config.db. Now, this field is hidden inside the encrypted ~/.dropbox/config.dbx (security reasons [1], I guess). Anyone has a solution to this?   Has anyone been successful at launching an instance of Windows Explorer in the SYSTEM account on Windows Vista or 7? It is possible to do this on XP, but I haven't been able to get it to completely work in Vista or 7. Trying to launch Explorer as SYSTEM into session 1 (my user session) results in Explorer exiting immediately and returning an error code of 1. I can launch Explorer as SYSTEM into session 0 with the following command: psexec -i 0 -s explorer That will create an instance of explorer running as SYSTEM with a taskbar and start menu on the hidden session 0 desktop, but won't let you open a file browser window. If you switch to the hidden session 0 desktop and try to open an Explorer window from there to browse files, the following error message appears: "The server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect. Check the username and password." I have set the following registry key to 1 for my user account and the SYSTEM account: \Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\SeparateProcess There has got to be a way to make this work? If it is not possible, can anyone explain why? -Rob

  I've got a MacBook laptop in the house, and when Mac OS X copies files over the network, it often brings along hidden "dot-files" with it. For instance, if I copy "SomeUtility.zip", there will also be copied a hidden ".SomeUtility.zip" file. I consider these OS X dot-files as useless turds of data as far as the rest of my network is concerned, and don't want to leave them on my Windows file server. Let's assume these dot-files will continue to happen. i.e. Think of the issue of getting OS X to stop creating those files, in the first place, to be another question altogether. Rather: How can I use Windows Explorer to find files that begin with a dot / period? I'd like to periodically search my file server and blow them away. I tried searching for files matching ".*" but that yielded – and not unexpectedly – all files and folders. Is there a way to enter more specific search criteria when searching in Windows Explorer? I'm referring to the search box that appears in the upper-right corner of an Explorer window. Please tell me there is a way to escape my query to do what I want? (Failing that, I know I can map a drive letter and drop into a cygwin prompt and use the UNIX 'find' command, but I'd prefer a shiny easy way.)

• Ping server NETBIOS name returns wrong IP and "Destination host unreachable"

  Problem server is Windows 2008 R2 VM running on VMWare ESXi 4 host. Single network adapter manually assigned single IP address (192.168.1.11). When I ping the server from any other network computer, it returns 192.168.1.124 and "Destination host unreachable". Yesterday I found a second network adapter assigned to this server with an IP of 169.254... indicating it had no real valid IP. Using the MAC addresses I determined which adapter was not needed/not wanted, and removed it using VMWare systems. This is the network Printer Server and, understandably, nothing is printing right now. I've looked at the solutions here Why was my ping answered by a different IP address than the one pinged? and they aren't applicable to my situation for the following reasons: Output of arp -a on another computer returns the correct IP address (.1.11) assigned to the correct MAC address, the incorrect IP .1.124 is not listed, and the MAC of the network adapter I removed yesterday is not listed at all. I checked out the Microsoft KB article which listed pretty much my exact symptoms ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981953 ) and it says to check binding orders and look for hidden adapters. But there are no hidden adapters, and there is only one Network Adapter listed in the Binding Order list. Essentially, I can communicate from the server TO any other network device, but I cannot communicate from any other network device TO the server. Help! • Strange activity in My Pictures folder: Thumbnail doesn't match actual picture.

  After finding an amusing picture on a popular imageboard, I decided to save it. A few days past and I was browsing my images folder when I realised that the thumbnail generated by Windows XP in the thumbnails view did not match the actual image. Here is a comparison image: What's even stranger in this situation is that the parts of the photograph that are different have actually been replaced with what might be the correct background. Furthermore, it is a jpeg (no PNG transparency tricks) that is 343 kilobytes but only 847x847 pixels wide. What could be going on here? Could there be anything malicious in the works, or hidden data? Before anyone asks, I have checked and preformed the following: Deleted Thumbs.db to reload thumbnails. Opened image in different editors. (they appear with the text) Moved image to a different directory. Changed the extension to .rar. All these steps produce the same results. Pre actual posting update: It seems that opening the image in paint, changing the image entirely (deleting entire contents and making a red fill) will still generate the original thumbnail, even after deleting Thumbs.db etc. I'm also hesitant to post the original data, in case there is something malicious or hidden that could be potentially illegal. (Although it would be very beneficial to see if it works on other computers and not just my own).
