• HTML 5 video custom controls

  Like many web developers I'm looking forward to streaming video that utilizes the new HTML 5 <video> tag. Browser support definitely isn't wide enough yet, so using a Flash/SWF fallback is a must. This got me thinking: in Flash it's possible to highly customize the playback controls (pause, play, stop, seek, volume, etc.) in HTML 5?. What options are there for customizing the glyphs, icons and colors of video controls? Is Javascript required? For instance the following page renders different controls depending on the browser - tested using FF3.5, Chrome and Safari: http://henriksjokvist.net/examples/html5-video/ It would be really awesome to customize and standardize controls across browsers and even match the Flash controls used by older browsers.

• How do CSS sprites work?

  I have 3 different images and want to create a sprite using CSS. I understand that will reduce HTTP requests. However, I am totally new to this concept and have no idea as to how to approach this. What would be best bet for me? Also I have seen there are some CSS sprite generators where you submit a .zip of images and it combines them. I tried doing that, but did not understood what was happening. Any guidance regarding creating and using CSS sprites would be highly appreciated. Update: I have gone through the A List Part article but it was not very clear to me. Can someone provide an example of using a CSS sprite? [A short, self-contained example in an answer is preferable for SO than just a link to an example elsewhere. –ed.]

• How to extend WPF hit testing zone for a Path object.

  Wpf hit testing is pretty good but the only method I found to extend the hit zone is to put a transparent padding area around your object. I can't find any method to add a transparent area arround a Path object. The path is very thin and I would like to enable hit testing if the user clicks near the path. I can't find any method to extend the path object with a transparent area like the image below : I tried to used a partially transparent stroke brush but I ran into the problem described here : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1412833/how-can-i-draw-a-soft-line-in-wpf-presumably-using-a-lineargradientbrush I also tried to put an adorner over my line but because of WPF anti-aliasing algorithms, the position is way off when I zoom in my canvas and interfere with other objects hit-testing in a bad way.   Consider the (highly simplified) following case: class Dispatcher { public: receive() {/*implementation*/}; // callback } class CommInterface { public: send() = 0; // call } class CommA : public CommInterface { public: send() {/*implementation*/}; } Various classes in the system send messages via the dispatcher. The dispatcher uses a comm to send. Once an answer is returned, the comm relays it back to the dispatcher which dispatches it back to the appropriate original sender. Comm is polymorphic and which implementation to choose can be read from a settings file. Dispatcher has a dependency on the comm in order to send. Comm has a dependency on dispatcher in order to callback. Therefor there's a circular dependency here and I can't seem to implement the dependency injection principle (even after encountering this nice blog post).

Senario Give i am on the "Edit Survey" page. I would like to add a button to each "Question" field which calls a remote_function, which in turn queue's up a delayed_job to execute some processing on the "Question". To give feedback to the user, i would like to disable the button, and show an animated spinner, which remains until the delayed_job has processed the "Question". Hint - I can add methods to the "Question" model to indicate the status of the delayed_job. So, with best practices in mind, what is the best way to achieve this?

• Paypal adaptive payment API call with C# .NET? Preferably with WebServices

  Okay I might be entirely off track now but here goes: Our "webshop" offers two functions, buying a specific product and selling it back to us. Back-end handles if the user can sell or not. I've decided to use Paypal's adaptive payments for this one as it seems the way to go doing these kinds of transactions. I've never implemented any kind of shop so I'm totally green with this one. I only recently learned ASP.NET and have mainly developed games before moving to this kind of development. HTTP is still some level of magic to me hehe.. I might be confused but I think paypal offers a webservice with their adaptive payment API. My humble request: A nice soul who wants to share an example of implementing an adaptive payment API call with C# .NET. If they don't offer it as a webservice I'll probably find it as a custom .dll or something. Any tips and examples are highly appreciated! Thanks for reading

• Young people using Emacs?

  I am a college student that has fallen in love with Emacs. I have used IDEs in the past, and although features like Intellisense made the switch to Emacs very hard, I now think that Emacs is much more powerful, and features like Intellisense can be pretty closely matched by various modes depending on language (and I am not referring to M-/). I am happily writing Elisp code for everything that I need that isn't provided by modes or by Emacs itself and I love the way that it adapts and molds to my needs. However, I do think that its main disadvantage is the fact that it has a pretty steep learning curve and that most new programmers will not even begin to learn it out of many common misconceptions. So, I want to know the opinions of young people (or any person who didn't start using Emacs before there were IDEs) that are Emacs users. Just to get some reassurance that Emacs is not dead within our Eclipse-loving generation =). (Opinions of users of any other highly extensible editor like Jedit are also welcome)

  I have an button just as have Ask Question on SO and here is the CSS for it: .rfs .grey_btn{ float: right; margin: 15px 5px; } Now I have to add border shadow to it and I have tried border-radius and box-shadow but it does not give me proper result. Also other question is that I have a label or box say and now I want to increase size of that box so that I have move the text inside that box to right, currently if I move it to right than it reaches the end limit of box and so I want to increase the size of box so that I can push text more towards right. • WCF is throwing UnauthorizedAccessExceptyion after upgrade to .NET 4.0

  I have a pretty simple client-server ASP.NET app; communication is via WCF service. All worked perferctly inVS 2008, now I upgraded to VS2010 and every time the client code is trying to instantiate a channel to the server: new ChannelFactory<IMemberService>("Members.MemberService").CreateChannel(); it throws an UnauthorizedAccessException "Access denied". Were there any breaking changes in the new version, or do I need to add some configuration? I'm pretty stuck, any ideas would be highly appreciated! BTW, binding used is basicHttpBinding, i don't know if thats important here. Thank you, Andrey

• Automation of testing using JUnit

  Hi, i am trying to automate manual testing of modules in my project. We are dealing with IBM Websphere Message queue software. We have a trigger component written in core java which when executed polls for availability of message in the configured queue. Its an indefinite while loop that keeps the trigger component running. I have written test cases in JUnit to put message in the queue and now will i be able to start/stop the trigger component on demand? Invoking the trigger component keeps it running and i am not getting the control back to check the expected output. If i start it in thread then the log files to which the trigger component is supposed to update when processing the message is not getting updated. How can i resolve this situation. • Mono Project: How to install Mono framework on Red Hat Linux which is compiled on centOS ?

  We have Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers at work place. However we dont have Red Hat Linux desktops. So I used CentOS 5.4 to compile the Mono sources and generated the Mono framework for CentOS and tested with some sample codes and I am satisfied. I want to transfer this compiled framework to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. How Can I do that? Do I have to compile the Mono framework statically or do I have to copy the linked libraries as well? I am not familiar with linux much. Any help is highly appreciated.

• good documentation about "avoid catching throwable", in context of weblogic server

  hi all, i am currently refactoring an existing codebase (EJBs...) to rip out all blocks where a Throwable is catched inside of the EJB. try { ... do some business logic } catch(Throwable t){ ... log and swallow ... :-( } i want/need to convince the people around me with proper documentation that "catching throwable" is a no-go for an EJB (we have lots of discussions around this :-(( ). weblogic will handle all the "Error" conditions and maybe invalidate EJBs and put fresh(working) EJBs into the pool. catching Throwable would undermine all these security nets provided by weblogic. and catching throwable is bad practice anyway (but people here are reluctant and use the "throwable" hammer everywhere). is anyone able to point me to some online docs where this behaviour is explained (for weblogic or jboss or...). i searched via google and had a look at the weblogic docs but wasn't able to find anything, just generic java doc. any help highly appreciated cheers marcel

• Is regex too slow? Real life examples where simple non-regex alternative is better

  I've seen people here made comments like "regex is too slow!", or "why would you do something so simple using regex!" (and then present a 10+ lines alternative instead), etc. I haven't really used regex in industrial setting, so I'm curious if there are applications where regex is demonstratably just too slow, AND where a simple non-regex alternative exists that performs significantly (maybe even asymptotically!) better. Obviously many highly-specialized string manipulations with sophisticated string algorithms will outperform regex easily, but I'm talking about cases where a simple solution exists and significantly outperforms regex. What counts as simple is subjective, of course, but I think a reasonable standard is that if it uses only String, StringBuilder, etc, then it's probably simple.

• Write data to an xml file.

  My aim is to write an XML file with few tags whose values are the regional language. I'm using Python to do this and using IDLE(Pythong GUI) for programming. While I try to write the words in an xmls file it gives the following error. UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode characters in position 0-4: ordinal not in range(128) For now, I'm not using any xml writer library instead I'm opening a file "test.xml" and writing the data into it. This error is encountered by the line: f.write("\t\" + data + "\"). If I replace the above write statement with print statement then it prints the data properly on Python Shell. I'm reading the data from an excel file which is not in the UTF8,16, or 32 encoding formats. Its in some other format. cp1252 is reading the data properly. Any help in getting this data writtent oan xml would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Bob

The problem is I need to create a link upon checking the value in one the variable that is in the repeater container.   hi, How is working with Magento when it comes to adding custom functionality? From an outsiders view the framework looks very complicated and it's hard to gage what is and is not possible. What are your experiences? Is it a difficult framework to get it to do what you want? Are there things that simply cannot be customized in Magento? How difficult is it to manage customizations when upgrading to latest versions,etc.. Any feedback/personal experiences would be great. Examples of highly customized Magento sites would be great too. • Java tool to remove warnings from code developed in java 1.4

  Hi All, I am working on a soucre code which was developed using java 1.4 but now we want to migrate it to java 6. I was able to compile it but there are tons of warnings related to use of java generics wherever we have made use of collections framework. It is possible to remove them by manually make changes to them, but I wanna know if is there any tool which can run on the source code and remove all the warnings by making necessary changes ot the code.
