• Q&A: Where does high performance computing fit with Windows Azure?

- by Eric Nelson
Answer I have been asked a couple of times this year about taking compute intensive operations to Windows Azure and/or High Performance Computing on Windows Azure. It is an interesting (if slightly niche) area. The good news is we have a great paper from David Chappell on HPC Server and Windows Azure integration. As a taster: A SOA application running entirely on Windows Azure runs its WCF services in Azure Worker nodes. • Gallery of Exoplanets

- by TATWORTH
Space.com have put together a gallery of exoplanets (planets outside our solar system) at http://www.space.com/13986-gallery-smallest-alien-planets-exoplanets.htmlSome exoplanets have been discovered by monitoring the red/blue shift of the star, whereas others have been found by the transit method. The kepler space telescope is continuously monitoring a small patch of the sky for transits. Here are some of the more interesting (and eye-catching pictures). Remember so far the best image of an extra-solar planets has been a diffraction blur, but even just as artist's impressions based upon the best current evidence, they are very impressive. Have a look at the Gallery at http://www.space.com/13986-gallery-smallest-alien-planets-exoplanets.html, it is very impressive.

• Profiling and containing memory per system

- by chadb
I have been interesting in profiling and keeping a managed memory pool for each subsystem, so I could get statistic on how much memory was being used in something such as sounds or graphics. However, what is the best design for doing this? I was thinking of using multiple allocators and just using one per subsystem, however, that would result in global variables for my allocators (or so it would seem to me). Another approach I have seen/been suggested is to just overload new and pass in an allocator for a parameter. I had a similar question over on stackoverflow here with a bounty, however, it seems as if perhaps I was too vague or just there is not enough people with knowledge in the subject.

• Why would I want to use CRaSH?

- by Adam Tannon
Justed stumbled across CRaSH and although it looks mighty interesting, I'm wondering why a Java developer should invest time & energy into learning (yet another) shell language. What sort of standard- and cool-applications can CRaSH be used for? Is this like a Groovy-version of Jython? I guess, when the dust settles, I'm looking for CRaSH's "wow" factors. I'm sure they're there, but after spending ~20 minutes perusing the documentation I'm just not seeing them. Thanks in advance!

• How do I check that my tests were not removed by other developers?

- by parxier
I've just came across an interesting collaborative coding issue at work. I've written some unit/functional/integration tests and implemented new functionality into application that's got ~20 developers working on it. All tests passed and I checked in the code. Next day I updated my project and noticed (by chance) that some of my test methods were deleted by other developers (merging problems on their end). New application code was not touched. How can I detect such problem automatically? I mean, I write tests to automatically check that my code still works (or was not deleted), how do I do the same for tests? We're using Java, JUnit, Selenium, SVN and Hudson CI if it matters.

• hPalm and a web-centric strategy

The acquisition battle has come and gone, and it’s HP that’s become Palm’s new owner. In general this news has been greeted withgladcries, despite (or maybe because) it was so unexpected. In general everybody assumes that the marriage of Palm software and HP hardware will be a good one, and that HP will also release a webOS-based tablet device. However, there’s an interesting dissenting opinion on VisionMobile (a blog I highly recommend, by the way). • Finding the balance between working on the things that you have to work on and the things that you want to work on [closed]

- by Emanuil
Sometimes I go for what I find interesting instead of what is considered right. Having this attitude has been educational and it has let me produce work that I'm exceptionally proud of but it has also made me miss deadlines and disappoint people. Sometimes I think I'm this way because I don't want to "break" my curiosity. I'm afraid that if I ignore it I may gradually lose it. Do you have any advice for me? • What does private cloud Daas or DBaaS really mean ?

- by llaszews
Just had meeting with Fortune 1000 company regarding their private DBaaS or DaaS offering. Interesting to see what DBaaS really means to them: 1. Automated Database provisioning - Being able to 'one button' provision databases and database objects. This includings creating the database instance, creating database objects, network configuration and security provisioning. It is estimated that just being able to provision a new DB table in automated fashion will reduce time required to create a new DB table from 60 hours down to 8 hours. 2. Virtualization and blades - DBaaS infrastructure is all based upon VMs and blades. 3. Consolidation of database vendors - Moving from over ten database vendors down to three.

• NetBeans "Find Usages" Tool Integrates JSF Expression Language

- by Geertjan
I saw this by Adam on Twitter today: Interesting. Let's try it. Here's my method "getCustomerId". I select it, right-click, and choose "Find Usages" (or press Alt-F7): A nice dialog appears: Then click "Find" and, guess what, this is what I see (click to enlarge it): Clearly, as you can see, I'm not only finding the Java controller class where the getter is used, but also the Facelets files, and, within those, the exact lines where the JSF expression language makes use of the getter. This is not a new feature, tried it and got the same result in 7.1.1, but it's really cool to know about nonetheless.

• If you want to make money with apps, go BlackBerry

An interesting study caught my eye. When taken at face value, it provesthat in order to really make money with apps you have to switch to the BlackBerryplatform.A company I never heard of, MPlayit (its URLcuriously opens a Facebook page), is apparently creating an “app discovery app” on Facebookand polled its users about how much they’re willing to spend on apps.Note immediately that this poll represents only the top of the market: the participants are people that areso interested in apps that they’re...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Silverlight 4 + RIA Services - Ready for Business: Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

To continue our series, lets look at SEO and Silverlight. The vast majority of web traffic is driven by search. • Topics for covering in-depth programming knowledge

- by black_belt
I pursued my bachelors' degree in business administration, but my interest in Information Technology led me to acquire some knowledge of PHP programming and MySQL database. I find programming so interesting that I haven't applied for any job since my graduation. Currently I am staying home and just trying to acquire in-depth knowledge of PHP programming. So far I have developed couple of websites and web applications including Inventory+ Point of Sale Software and an Accounting system for small organizations. I aim to have knowledge that a Computer Science graduate should have, and for that I want to read books but I have no idea where to start from. Could you please suggest me some books and topics that I should study on? Thanks a lot :)

• Are C or C++ The Only Viable Languages for a GC

- by user95312
Background I have just finished writing a compiler for a functional language compiling to the JVM as a learning project. However, since I'm just doing this to learn, I thought it might be interesting to write a native backend and a RTS for it. As I've been planning out what this new backend will look like, the one point I'm stumbling on is the garbage collector. I've implemented the compiler in Haskell. But I have no desire to write the GC in Haskell since, while it may be possible, it'd suck. Question I've looked at several FOSS garbage collectors prior to posting and most of them were implemented in good old ANSI C. Is this still the most accepted choice for writing a GC nowadays? I've seen that this site tends to frown upon questions with multiple answers so I hope this will make it more specific: If some startup was writing a professional grade gc today, are the only viable choice for them C or C++? It's my first question here so please comment and let me know if this question is ill-suited for for programmers.

• What to use to make voice chat (and some more) on a web?

- by Tunococ
I am trying to make available on my website a voice chat for a small group of people that allows some other means to interact such as text messaging, photo sharing, file sharing, simple drawing and silly games. In other words, something similar to older MSN Messenger, but on the web. Any ideas on what to use? To clarify, I am looking for suggestions on languages and libraries to use. I want to be able to fully customize it as much as possible because I might want to add other (somewhat interesting) functions later. Low-level programming is fine if required, but platform dependency isn't that much preferred.

• (Not) Making a Splash with Visual Studio

- by StuartBrierley
This post is just a quicky to remind me of a Visual Studio switch that I found interesting/useful. If you are interested in such things, there are a number of command line switches that can be used with Visual Studio. One that does not appear on the list linked to above is the "nosplash" switch. This switch disables the splash screen when starting Visual Studio, taking you directly into the IDE. Close Visual Studio and then add /nosplash after ...devenv.exe in the target of whichever shortcut you use to start Visual Studio. Starting Visual Studio now should now be quicker, possibly saving precious seconds that you could put to use elsewhere!

• NoSQL For The Rest Of Us

No one would blame you for strictly associating NoSQL with performance. Most of the back and forth about NoSQL - an umbrella term given for non-relational storage mechanisms - has squarely put the focus on performance, sites with massive traffic, and server farms. It’s an interesting conversation, but one that risks alienating NoSQL from the majority of developers. The Problem Does NoSQL provide us simple developers with any tangible benefit? As a matter of fact, it can - one as significant...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Working with Primary Keys and Generators - Quickstart with NHibernate (Part 4)

- by BobPalmer
In this NHibernate tutorial, I'll be digging into the ID tag and Generator classes. I had originally planned on finishing up a series on relationships (parent/child, etc.) but felt this would be an interesting topic for folks, and I also wanted to start integrating some of the current NHibernate reference. Since this article also includes some reference sections (and since I have not had a chance to check for every possible parameter value), I used the current reference as a baseline, and would welcome any feedback or technical updates that I can incorporate. You can find the entire article up on Google Docs at this link: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dg3z7qxv_24f3ch2rf7 As always, feedback, suggestions, and technical corrections are greatly appreciated! Enjoy! - Bob

• Advice: should I focus on PHP + MySQL, or split my time for more JS and CSS? [closed]

- by fakaff
I started learning web development about three months ago (in between working my regular job), and I'm finally starting to get some vague, distant notion of understanding. I find the server-side stuff the most interesting; though I've not gone anywhere near Apache quite yet, which I assume will be necessary at some point. As cool as toying around with visuals and UI is, programming and database stuff inspires me with new ideas and possibilities every minute (I've even bought, on a whim, a wonderfully dry bunch of books on database theory and relational algebra). And whatever CSS or Javascript tutorial I'm doing, it often feels like a distraction from the PHP/MySQL stuff I'd rather be playing with. For someone like me who's just starting out, which is the most advisable course of action? (in terms of being marketable as a programmer): To focus on PHP and SQL stuff exclusively, and only once I master those to diversify my skills. To first learn all three (PHP/MySQL, Javascript, CSS and design) and only once I'm fluent in all three focus on PHP and databases?

• Empathy authentication error to XMPP server

- by Shauna
I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a new machine and have been working on setting it up, but I've run into an interesting problem. I have a custom XMPP server for work (I don't control it, but we're using an in-house install). I can connect to it just fine via Pidgin, but due to some UI issues I'm having with Pidgin (and what appears to be better overall integration between Empathy and Ubuntu/Unity), I'd like to use Empathy instead. However, Empathy won't connect to my XMPP server, and I keep getting an authentication error and repeatedly prompted for my password. This happens even when importing the working account information from Pidgin (so I know things like the password are correct). Is there a way I can get Empathy working with my XMPP server?

• Clone User Profile with Encrypted Home Folder

- by doublerainbow64
I'd like to clone my user profile on my local machine. I'd like to do so, just to keep all the preferences and not to have to redefine all of them manually. I've tried this, but when I login, it will just return to KDM login screen. BTW I'm using Kubuntu 14.04. What might be interesting: I have encrypted my home folder. Does this make any difference? I've also tried to copy the contents of .kde folder into /etc/skel, but this had no effect. Thank you very much in advance, doublerainbow64
