• Command line tool (PDF Workflow) in OSX that detects if key is down

  Hello! I'm writing a OSX PDF Workflow in ObjC and C. A single executable ("UNIX Tool" as named in the Apple reference), that reads in the spooled PDF file, does some parsing. I'd like to give more functionality by enabling a key-down event handling, meaning - when user opens print dialog in an application - and chooses to left-mouse-click on the custom made pdf workflow to run it - depending on if a keyboard key is down (i.e. option key, but "any key down" would be enough for me) when running that workflow - a decision is made in the code. I have read NSEvent and Carbon Event Manager reference and it seems that in this case (a plain unix executable + not run as root) it's not possible. Or is it? Many thanks in advance, Kroko

• Python extension building with boost

  Hey guys I'm fairly new to boost c/c++ library. I downloaded boost library and build the library. I created a very simple python library in c++ using boost interface (actually it is example code given in the documentation). I built it into a dll file. In the documentation it reads that this dll is exposed to python and they just show the import function in python and include the created library. I don't understand how to expose that dll to python and load the library inside in tradition ('import') manner. In case if you wanna look at the code then here it is: #include <boost/python.hpp> char const* greet() { return "hello, world"; } BOOST_PYTHON_MODULE(hello_ext) { using namespace boost::python; def("greet", greet); } Please help I really want to build applications with c/c++ and python. • Write/read count to txt file

  Hi, I need a batch file that writes the count number to a txt file. Next time the batch file is run, it should read the current count number from the txt file and add 1 to count and save this new value in the txt file. (nothing else is in the txt file) When count is 5 it should start from 1 again Example: Count.bat runs 1 time: count.txt has no count so Count.bat saves the value 1 in count.txt Count.bat is run 2 time: Count.bat reads 1 from count.txt and saves the new value 2 to count.txt When count.bat is run for the 6 time it should start over by saving the value 1 in count.txt I think this just be easy to do, but I'am not use to batch commands So hopefully someone here could help me.

• Does anyone else think instance variables are problematic in database-backed applications?

  It occurs to me that state control in languages like C# is not well supported. By this, I mean, it is left upto the programmer to manage the state of in-memory objects. A common use-case is that instance variables in the domain-model are copies of information residing in persistent storage (i.e. the database). Clearly this violates the single point of authority principle, and "synchronisation" has to be managed by the developer. I envisage a system where instead of instance variables, we have simple public access/mutator methods marked with attributes that link them to the database, and where reads and writes are mediated by a framework that decides whether to hit the database. Does such a system exist? Am I completely missing the point, or is there some truth to this idea?

• Get the checked value of 2 sets of radiobuttons using jQuery

  Im having a weird issue here. Its probably just something stupid but I dont see it. I have two sets of radiobuttons, group1 and group2, and I want to get their values in a function. I have 1 clickevent on all radiobuttons in that div and when I click them I want to display the check-values of both groups. But he only reads the value of the first group. and so it always displays 1-1 2-2 3-3 4-4 instead of possibly 1-2 3-1 etc.... There is a jsfiddle here what am I missing??

  I have an application that reads in one of its classes: public function __construct() { global $config; //Establish a connection to the database and get results set $this->db = new Database("localhost",$config["dbuser"],$config["dbpass"],"student"); $this->records = $this->db->query("SELECT * FROM major") or die("ERROR: ".$this->db->error); echo "<pre>".var_dump($this->records)."</pre>"; } My problem is that var_dump shows that $this->records is a boolean. I've read the documentation and see that the SELECT query should return a result set. This is the only query used by the application. Any ideas where I am going wrong?

• Separate config file for Providers

  Hi, In a small test project, I currently have the provider sections in the web.config. I want to move that to a separate config file, like providers.config. My current provider instantiation code is like: //Get the feature's configuration info ProviderConfiguration pc = (ProviderConfiguration)ConfigurationManager.GetSection(DATA_PROVIDER_NAME); This code works if the provider info is in web.config, but how to I read this info from another file (like providers.condfig) because it seems that the ConfigurationManager "reads" only web.config file. I may be missing something very simple here :) Would love to get more inputs on this. Thanks V

• Exposing console apps to the web with Ruby

  I'm looking to expose an interactive command line program via JSON or another RPC style service using Ruby. I've found a couple tricks to do this, but im missing something when redirecting the output and input. One method at least on linux is to redirect the stdin and stdout to a file then read and write to that file asynchronously with file reads and writes. Another method ive been trying after googling around was to use open4. • Python: Best practice for including a version number in an app?

  I have a PyQt application that reads and writes data files. I am including a 'version number' in each file written. This is a simple number similar to: 1.2 or something (major and minor versions). I am doing this so that I can change the format of these data files in future versions and then still correctly parse them simply by checking to see what the version is inside the file. My question is what is the best practice for keeping this number stored inside the app itself. I.e. do I just hard-code the app version number into the class that is responsible for reading and writing files? Or should I have some sort of object/variable stored at the top-level of the app and somehow access it from the class responsible for reading and writing these files. If the latter, how do I store it and how do I access it? Thanks.

• Active MQ showing more than one (ghost) consumer

  We have a system that uses ActiveMQ (Queues) - and have exactly one producer and one consumer (implemented as a Windows Service in .NET). Over the weekend, the infrastructure team had a reboot of the servers on the network, and from then on we noticed that there are more than one ghost consumer appearing that listens to the queue and we also suspect reads and deletes the messages. My questions are: is there any way from the Active MQ management console to find out what the consumers are (hostnames, etc). and Are there any scenarios in which inadvertent consumers get 'created'? For instance, there were suggestions about the active MQ journal folders getting corrupted after a reboot, or there is another suggestion that another machine with Active MQ broker automatically makes itself a consumer of all the queues on the main/live active mq server.

• File.Exists() returns false, but not in debug

  I'm being completely confused here folks, My code throws an exception because File.Exists() returns false public override sealed TCargo ReadFile(string fileName) { if (!File.Exists(fileName)) { throw new ArgumentException("Provided file name does not exist", "fileName"); } Visual studio breaks at the throw statement, and I immediately check the value of File.Exists(fileName) in the immediate window. It returns true. When I drag the breakpoint back up to the if statement and execute it again, it throws again. fileName is an absolute path to a file. I'm not creating the file, nor writing to it (it's there all along). If I paste the path into the open dialog in Notepad, it reads the file without problems. The code is executing in a background worker. It's the only complicating factor I can think of. I am positive the file has not been opened already, either in the worker thread or elsewhere. What's going on here?

  I am using a file as a cache for big data. One thread writes to it sequentially, another thread reads it sequentially. Can I be sure that all data that has been written (by write()) in one thread can be read() from another thread, assuming a proper "happens-before" relationship in terms of the Java memory model? Is this behavior documented? EDIT: In my JDK, FileOutputSream does not override flush(), and OutputStream.flush() is empty. That's why I'm wondering... EDIT^2: The streams in question are owned exclusively by a class that I have full control of. Each stream is guaranteed to be accesses by one thread only. My tests show that it works as expected, but I'm still wondering if this is guaranteed and documented.   Looking at other posts for this could not find an adequate solution that for my needs. Trying to just get the first page of a pdf document as a thumbnail.   I have text file that contains over one million urls. I have to process this file in order to assign urls to groups, based on host address: { 'http://www.ex1.com' = ['http://www.ex1.com/...', 'http://www.ex1.com/...', ...], 'http://www.ex2.com' = ['http://www.ex2.com/...', 'http://www.ex2.com/...', ...] } My current basic solution takes about 600mb of RAM to do this (size of file is about 300mb). Could You provide some more efficient ways? My current solution simply reads line by line, extracts host address by regex and put url into hash.

  I am working on a software product with an integrated log file viewer. Problem is, its slow and unstable for really large files because it reads the whole file into memory when you view a log file. I'm wanting to write a new log file viewer that addresses this problem. What are the best practices for writing viewers for large text files? How does editors like notepad++ and VIM acomplish this? I was thinking of using a buffered Bi-directional text stream reader together with Java's TableModel. Am I thinking along the right lines and are such stream implementations available for Java?

• Using memcached/APC for session storage?

  Hi everybody, I had some thoughts back ago about using memcached for session storage, but came to the conclusion that it wouldn't be sufficient in the event of one or more of the servers in the memcached pool were about to go down. A hybrid version is to save the main database (mySQL) from load caused by reads would be to work out a function that tries to fetch the data from the cache pool, and if that fails gets it from the database. After putting some more thought into it, I started to think about using APC cache for session related data. If our web server would go down, sessions would be lost either way, so storing them in a local APC or a localhost memcached server maybe isn't that bad? What's your experiences?

• Would Python's Twisted library be the best case for an observer type pattern?

  hi all, I'm developing a system where a queue will be filled with millions of items I need a process that reads items from the queue constantly and then sends those items out to registered clients. I'm thinking about using twisted for this, having the queue reader be a twisted server listening on a tcp port then clients can connect on that port and when an item is pulled from the queue the server writes it out to all the clients. Does that sound like something that twisted would be ideal for? Does anyone know of any sample code out there that may do something similar? thanks

Question is though, what's the right way to do this? Can I somehow make 1 SQL SELECT call to do this?

• Is it possible to use an incremental value within a variable name whilst declaring it within a loop?

  Hi, I'm creating function which will read different XML files each time that will contain different amounts of the same nodes. I have already created a loop which stores the ID of each node into an array, and now I want to create variables for each array member which store attributes of the node with each ID. Because the number of nodes will be different for every XML document my function reads, I cannot manually assign variables for the attributes of each node ID not knowing how many to assign, so I have created a loop which runs specific to the number of items I have stored in the array. Inside this loop I was hoping to have something like: for (i=0; i<array.length; i++) { var ID + i + width = exampleheight var ID + i + height = exampleheight } I know this doesn't work, but was trying to outline what I am looking to find out. Is it possible to use some kind of variable or random number when declaring a variable?

  What term should I use to describe situations (or bugs in software) caused by read, write, send, recv doing less work than expected? For example, write(fd, "123456", 6); may return 3 and we need to write "456" to finish our work. I expect any good program should do all their reads and writes in a loop until without relying that write will write everything. • Recursively looping through a drive and replacing illegal characters

  Hi I have to create an app that drills into a specific drive, reads all file names and replaces illegal SharePoint characters with underscores.
