  • Com port redirection from Windows 7 to Windows Server 2008 R2

    We use "Copy file.prn to \tsclient\com1" to print from a TS session to a locally attached serial printer. This works fine from Windows XP, but when trying it from a Windows 7 client computer, we get an "Access is denied" error message. And yes, the check box of COM port is selected on the Local Resources tab of the Remote Desktop Connection client. Any pointers? Has anyone even managed to do this successfully?

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 DNS Server Intermittently Unresponsive

    Throughout the day out DNS servers (2x Win 2k8 R2 servers) are unable to respond to requests. The requests that fail are all on the .root zone that are either cached or obtained from 1 of 5 DNS servers we forward to before going to root hints. At first I thought the DNS servers we were forwarding to were flaky. So I added some more in. Currently the forwarding list looks like ISP DNS 1 OPEN DNS 1 ISP DNS 2 OPEN DNS 2 ISP DNS 3 I have tried: Turning off root hints. Set record scavenging to 7 days. Using dnscmd /config /EnableEDNSProbes 0 as per this. Packet capture at the DNS server shows that there is a lot of query responses with server failure between lan clients and the local dns server; it does not appear to be forwarding those requests. So maybe a problem with caching? Anyhow, does anything have anything I can try to get this working?

  • Trouble joining Windows Server 2008 to Domain

    When I try to join my new server to my existing domain I get the following error: "An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resove DNS names in the target domain." I have tried all of the following already: Successfully pinged the domain controller. Ping the new server from the domain controller by IP address and by DNS name. Ping the DC server from the new server by IP address and by DNS name. Changed the network to DHCP (it was originally static). No joy as static or DHCP. Turned off all firewall settings. Added the domain name to 'hosts' file. Added the server name of the primary domain controller to the 'hosts' file in the new server. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help! Jim Update: With help from J. Brian Kelly (Thanks) I have managed to narrow down the problem to a DNS issue. Specifically, UDP/53 packets are being sent (they are seen in Network Monitor), but are not getting to the DNS server.   • Windows Server 2008 R2 RAS VPN: access server on internal interface ip

    Hey, short question: I'm usually a linux admin but need to setup a Win2k8 R2 server for a student project. The server is running as VM on a root server and has a public internet IP assigned. Additionally I need a VPN server to access some services running on the server. I managed to set up a working VPN gateway via the Routing and RAS service which assigns clients an IP in the private subnet 192.168.88.0/24 with the Interface "Internal" listening on 192.168.88.1. Additionally I set up the external interface as NAT interface. So I can connect to the VPN server, get an IP assigned and the server additionally does NAT and I can access the internet over the VPN connection. The only thing I additionally need, is that I can access the server itself over that internal IP (e.g. client 192.168.88.2, server 192.168.88.1) as I want to access some services which I don't like to expose to the internet and restrict them to connected VPN clients. Does anybody have a hint, which configuration I'm missing here to be able to access the server over the VPN connection? EDIT: VPN clients get assigned the IP from the private subnet with subnetmask 255.255.255.255, I guess that might be the reason I can't access the server on the private IP address although it's in the same network range. Any ideas how to change this? I defined a static address pool in the Routing and RAS service, but I can't change the netmask there. EDIT2: I can't access the server from the client, but I can fully access the client from the server (ping, HTTP). I guess it has to do with firewall configuration. Thanks in advance, Mathias

The Job that fails is as follows. collection_set_1_noncached_collect_and_upload The job consists of the following steps dcexec -u -s 1 -i "INSTANCE03" EXEC [dbo].[sp syscollector purge collection logs] dcexec -u -s 1 -i "INSTANCE03" The job fails at Step 1. I have run the steps manually and they all appear to be ok. If I change the mirror database to be the principal the job completes successfully.

  • SBS 2008 DNS issues in BPA

    I'm gettng constant Critical Issue events in the Small Business Server Best Practices Analyser & resulting SBS Console reports that begin "The DNS client is not configured to point only to the internal IP address of the server.". When I check the DNS Manager, there are two separate IPs listed, one ***.***.***.2 and the other ***.***.***.28. I have checked online after an ipconfig /all and have found the reason for this to be that the second IP is created by DHCP for RAS & VPN purposes. It seems to cause no conflicts of any detrimental result apart from constantly sending me error messages and alerted reports. Does anyone know of a way that I can change settings somewhere so that Windows accepts this second IP, or at least stops alerting me of its prescence? Perhaps a registry hack of some kind...?   • Incorrect directory permissions with OpenSSH on Cygwin on Windows Server 2008 SP2

    I ran into a weird directory permission problem when logged in to a Win2008SP2 (not R2) server through SSH. When I open a local cygwin shell on the server, i can do this: myUser@myServer ~ $ cd /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv/ myUser@myServer /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv $ cd config myUser@myServer /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv/config $ I have no issues accessing the 'config' directory when using a local cygwin shell. 'myUser' has all necessary permissions to access the directory as well. In fact, 'myUser' is a local administrator on the machine. Listing the permissions of the config folder through the local cygwin shell shows the following output: 4 drwx------+ 1 SYSTEM SYSTEM 0 Aug 2 09:38 config But when I log into the server with a SSH client (in this case Putty), i run into the following problem: myUser@myServer ~ $ cd /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv/ myUser@myServer /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv $ cd config -bash: cd: config: Permission denied It also doesn't list the proper permissions through SSH: 0 drwxr-x--- 1 ???????? ???????? 0 Aug 2 09:38 config When I look at the running processes on the server with Task Manager (with a remote desktop connection), it shows that all bash.exe processes are running under the 'myUser' account, so I don't understand why I can't access that particular directory through SSH but have no problems accessing it in a local cygwin shell. I'm using OpenSSH 5.9p1-1. I'm not sure what the Cygwin version is... I used the latest setup.exe (version 2.738) of Cygwin, but I can't seem the find any other Cygwin-related version number. I doubt that it's related to SSH/Cygwin though, because when I connect from the Win2008SP2 server to my local Win7 machine through SSH (using the same OpenSSH/Cygwin versions) I can access the /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv/config folder without issues. Does anyone have an idea on what the issue could be?

I know general guidelines on query optimizations (using indexes, selecting only needed fields etc.), my question is about SQL Server optimization.   • Proxy Settings per Machine not working on windows server 2008 R2 SP1

    i have a very interesting problem and would appreciate any help for it. In my scenario i have scripts which bring up a VM inside a domain. Now i want to enable internet access for all the VM's and they go through a proxy. I interact with the VM's using remote sessions and use the credentials of a user which belogs to the domain administrator group. Now problem is that, i create VM's on the fly and destroy them as well,and the scripts i run during their lifetime require internet access on them.So i cannot statically set the proxy settings thus i used the option of Active Directory Group Policy Management. I initially used the "User Configuration" option and set the proxy, which worked like a charm when ever i log inside the machine. However it doesn't work if i use to remote login to the machine with an account which has not yet logged in to the machine. So i used this link to configure it to work on Per Machine, the group policy has worked fine and it reflects in the browser too. But i am not able to resolve any dns name like http://www.google.com or any internet based site. Any idea what i can do?

  • Strange permission errors with Windows Server 2008

    I just don't know a better way to describe my issue that is driving me nuts. I am trying to establish a test domain with virtual machines on a box that has Win7 with VMwware workstation installed. The purpouse with this domain will be so that we can try and test different situations before they go into the production network. I build a VM with WinSrv2008R2 and I am using that VM as a template to make other servers for the domain by making clones of it. Now I raise a DC with one clone and a member server with another clone - I add the server to the domain. I am following a standard procedure as always (it is not my first domain). Then I make an admin account and I am adding the admin to be a member of the Domain and Enterprise Admins group. That admin is admin with full priviledges on the DC.. no problem there. But on the other server has ... somewhat half the privileges and I cant log in via RDP. I tryed with another account. Same issues. For example (with half the privileges): I can't open the Even Viewer if I go via Start - Administrative Tools - Event Viewer. But I can open the Even Viewer via the server manager. You can notice this on the image below. I mean WTF??? I am going crazy, I haven't experienced anything similar in my three years of expertise. I already lost 3 days troubleshooting this. Could this be related with the cloning? Perhaps if I make fresh installs of WinSrv2008 there won't be any problems? I've had raised test domains as VMs on other occasions before, and there weren't any problems then. This is VMware Workstation 8. I've made clones before, on Workstation 7 it didn't had any problems.   • sysprep'd Server 2008 R2 VMware autocheck BSODs

    I'm trying to set up a template Server 2k8 R2 (Standard) VM in our VMware ESXi environment, we'll need to deploy a whole lot of them and I want to (a) streamline and (b) standardise the server build process. Originally I built a sysprep answer file using WAIK and the Windows System Image Manager - once I'd run sysprep using this, restarting the machine resulted in a "autochk.exe not found - skipping autocheck" message, followed almost immediately by a BSOD. Rebooting just resulted in the same thing. I first assumed it was my answer file, but have now checked this on a physical machine and it works fine. I've reinstalled the OS on the machine (and NOTHING else), and run sysprep.exe (ticking Generalize) - this produces exactly the same result. I've also attempted to use the Customisation Wizard built in to VMware - again, the same autocheck message and BSOD is the result. Any ideas? Let me know any further information I need to provide...

    I had to deploy an application that was not written by me onto the above configuration. It is a rather bizarre hybrid of asp.net and classic asp and it's the classic asp that is proving troublesome. The client is having problems with 500 Internal Server Errors appearing and I can see some of these in the logs but I only get the error code and the page name but little else. What I would like to see is the actual error message to at least give me an idea what is going on (or not going on, depending on your point of view) I don't want to display errors in the browser as I don't know the code well enough and this could (for all I know) display some crazy code where the db password is hard-coded into the site.

  • Plesk on Windows Server 2008 memory usage

    I have a server running IIS and Plesk. There is a problem every day now in which the memory usage of PleskControlPanel.exe and w3wp.exe slowly increases. And at some point all of the sites hosted on the server go down. Restarting Plesk through its panel will reset its memory usage for a while, and restarting IIS will make it last even longer, but there is still the constant memory climbing problem. I cannot see anything by looking through the event viewer. Has anyone ever seen anything like this with Plesk on Windows? Thanks for any help.

I get another event telling me that there is a report here: *C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue\AppCrash_w3wp.exe_cdb8af6deb381574fe9fb0dc9aa3edaad59acd5f_cab_4fbf9b53* It contains the following files: WERD931.tmp.appcompat.txt WERDFE9.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml WER99EF.tmp.WERDataCollectionFailure.txt The "depressing one" is the WERDataCollectionFailure that says: Heap dump generation failed: 0x8007012b Mini dump generation failed: 0x8007001f After many tries, lots of msdn documentation and many failed google search.     For special testing purposes, we need a Windows server to allow the following: A team member can log in remotely to the server. When remotely logged in, they can disconnect the wireless connection, perform a few tests, and then reconnect the wireless connection. In general, the LAN connection would just be used for the remote login, the wireless connection would be used for performing tests including using a web browser to test certain web sites, etc. How can we successfully configure the server to support 2 network connections like this? (A regular LAN connection + a wireless connection). And also make sure that the tests we perform using the browser utilize the wireless connection for the outgoing internet activity.

  • Java application server behind IIS 7.5 on Windows Server 2008

    I have a Java application server (GlassFish, indeed, but the problem is the same for any other application server, I guess), running on port 8080. And I have IIS 7.5 listening on port 80 as by default configuration. I want to avoid people typing the port because it's unprofessional. So I want that when somebody types http://myserver the traffic is directed to IIS. And this is how it already works now. But I also want that when somebody types http://myserver/java the traffic is directed to port 8080 and consequently my GlassFish splash screen is displayed. If I have deployed an application on GlassFish under context root app1, typing http://myserver/java/app1 should access the application. How can I do this? I have tried with adding some rules with the URL Rewrite utility from IIS7.5 UI, but this shows the port after the rule has rewritten the url, and I want to avoid it.
