• Accidentally created a virus?

  I've seen it happen reasonabley often: I write an application in Delphi and when I compile it, the virus-scanner tells me that I've created a virus and thus immediately deletes the executable again. It's annoying but reasonable easy to fix by doing a full rebuild, deleting the *.dcu files first and sometimes by simply waiting. It happens with Delphi 6, 7, 2005 and 2007, as far as I know. And Symantec, Kaspersky, McAfee and NOD32 have all been guilty of reporting these false positives. I know it's because Delphi adds timestamps to its DCU files and these timestamps end up in the final executable and apparently appear to be part of some random virus signature. I don't want to disable the virus-scanner, not even for a single folder or file. And I'm not really for a solution, but am wondering about the following: Do these false positives also occur with other compilers? Does it also happen with .NET executables? Do others also notice similar problems with Delphi?

• Silverlight 4 application on localhost runs extremely slow

  Silverlight 4 app running in IE8 and hosted on VS2010 internal webserver. The website takes atleast a minute to download the xap and code runs slow on client (IE8). I am running the app in debug mode and have turned intellitrace off. Symbol loading is also turned off. However if I kill the VS webserver, clean the solution, the app runs fast. 3 debugging sessions later, the app slows to a crawl. Have also tried turning off McAfee live scanning but no use. Looked in event log for any clue but found none. What could be the cause of the slowness? TIA rams

• Tiny C Compiler and Virus warnings...

  I wanted to try out the TCC and got the Win32 Binary zip file from the website. upon decompressing it I tried to compile the "hello_win.c" source from the example directory. As soon as the compiler tried to write to the disk McAfee Popped up a dialog box and identified a Trojan named "Generic.dx." Has anyone else experience this? Dropping a virus into a compiler would be a sneaky, but brilliant, delivery mechanizism. I just want to know if this is a legit threat.

• Turn Non-Resizeable Windows into Rezieable Windows

  Are you frustrated with Windows app windows that can not be resized at all? Now you can apply some “attitude adjustment” and resize those windows with ResizeEnable. Before Everyone is familiar with the many app windows in their Windows OS that simply can not be resized. What you need is cooperation, not attitude. For our example we chose the “Taskbar and Start Menu Properties Window”…notice the cursor in the lower right corner. No resizing satisfaction available at all… After The program comes in a zip file with three files as shown here. Once you have unzipped the program place it in an appropriate “Program Files Folder”, create a shortcut, and you are ready to go. There will be a “System Tray Icon” with only two “Context Menu” items…“About & Quit”. Here is a quick look at the “About Window” that tells you exactly what ResizeEnable does. Notice that it does state that you may occasionally have a window that may not respond correctly. Now back to our “Taskbar and Start Menu Properties Window”. Notice the resizing cursor in the lower right corner….time for some fun! During our test the “Taskbar and Start Menu Properties Window” was suddenly a dream to resize. Daring to stretch the window even further…now that is what you call “stretching” the window out in comparison to its’ original size! Think of all the windows that will be much easier to work with now… Conclusion If you have been frustrated with non-resizeable windows then ResizeEnable will certainly bring a smile to your face as you watch those windows suddenly become a lot more cooperative. This is definitely one app that is worth adding to your system. • Skip “Next Links” with the PageZipper Bookmarklet

  No matter what browser you use sooner or later you will run across a website with an endless number of “next links” used for the sole purpose of generating page views. Now you can simply scroll through those articles without the “next links” using the PageZipper Bookmarklet. The Problem Here is a perfect example of a page view generating article. As you can see our browser is in a non-maximized state and the first part of the article takes up very little room in the browser window. Absolutely horrible… The PageZipper Bookmarklet in Action The bookmarklet is very easy to set up in your browser…simply drag it to your “Bookmarks Toolbar” and you are ready to go. Switching tabs back to the article we never even needed to refresh the page. One nice little click on our new bookmarklet and… It immediately went to work. When you use PageZipper you will see a page count in the upper right corner of the browser window area as shown here. You can see the transition between pages here…nice and smooth. When using the bookmarklet just keep scrolling down as needed to read the entire article. Six pages of reading condensed into one without having to click a single link. Now that is nice! Conclusion If you despise those irritating “next links” then the PageZipper Bookmarklet will be a perfect addition to your favorite browser. At the latest MVP summit (beginning of March 2011), he took over a DVD about WPF 4 and Silverlight 4 and asked a few Microsoft superstars to sign it. • Move Window Buttons Back to the Right in Ubuntu 10.04

  One of the more controversial changes in the Ubuntu 10.04 beta is the Mac OS-inspired change to have window buttons on the left side. We’ll show you how to move the buttons back to the right. Before While the change may or may not persist through to the April 29 release of Ubuntu 10.04, in the beta version the maximize, minimize, and close buttons appear in the top left of a window. How to move the window buttons The window button locations are dictated by a configuration file. We’ll use the graphical program gconf-editor to change this configuration file. Press Alt+F2 to bring up the Run Application dialog box, enter “gconf-editor” in the text field, and click on Run. The Configuration Editor should pop up. The key that we want to edit is in apps/metacity/general. Click on the + button next to the “apps” folder, then beside “metacity” in the list of folders expanded for apps, and then click on the “general” folder. The button layout can be changed by changing the “button_layout” key. Double-click button_layout to edit it. Change the text in the Value text field to: menu:maximize,minimize,close Click OK and the change will occur immediately, changing the location of the window buttons in the Configuration Editor. Note that this ordering of the window buttons is slightly different than the typical order; in previous versions of Ubuntu and in Windows, the minimize button is to the left of the maximize button. You can change the button_layout string to reflect that ordering, but using the default Ubuntu 10.04 theme, it looks a bit strange. If you plan to change the theme, or even just the graphics used for the window buttons, then this ordering may be more natural to you. • BIEE Drilling Down and then Across

  Slightly off topic today but if you are working with OBIEE in conjunction with BIP its not that far off. Some of you may know, I now get to play with the whole BI suite, I have been for nearly 2 years. Today, I was working with BIEE and wanted to share what I thought was a neat trick. I have to thank Rob Lindsley on our team for the pointers to get it working. The problem I had was that I had set up a drill down hierarchy that took the user down a couple of levels to the bottom project number level. I needed for the user to then be able to click the project number to navigate across to another more detailed report on that project. By default, there is no link, you are at the bottom of a hierarchical drill! There is nothing you can do in the data model (that Im aware of) but you can use a neat trick to get BIEE to allow you to navigate from the bottom rung of the hierarchy. Add the bottom level column to an Answer report. Go into the column properties and set the navigation target. The trick is to then set the current column properties as the system-wide default for that column. You can then actually delete the column from your report. Now as you drill down the hierarchy and reach what was the bottom you will still have a link for the user to punch over to the detail report, sweeeet! The other benefit is that whenever you add the column to a report the link will be available to the detail report, unless you want to override it of course.

• Unused Indexes Gotcha

  I'm currently looking into dropping unused indexes to reduce unnecessary overhead and I came across a very good point in the excellent SQL Server MVP Deep Dives book that I haven't seen highlighted anywhere else. I was thinking it was simply a case of dropping indexes that didn't show as being used in DMV sys.dm_db_index_usage_stats (assuming a solid representative workload had been run since the last service start). But Rob Farley points out that the DMV only shows indexes whose pages have been read or updated. An index that isn't listed in the DMV might still be useful by providing metadata to the Query Optimizer and thus streamlining query plans. For example, if you have a query like this: select  au.author_name         , count(*) as books from    books b         inner join authors au on au.author_id = b.author_id group by au.author_name If you have a unique index on authors.author_name the Query Optimizer will realise that each author_id will have a different author_name so it can produce a plan that just counts the books by author_id and then adds the author name to each row in that small table. If you delete that index the query will have to join all the books with their authors and then apply the GROUP BY - a much more expensive query. So be cautious about dropping apparently unused unique indexes.

• Add a non-Google Tasks List to Chrome

  Most people rely on a task list to help them remember what they need to do but not everyone wants one that is tied to a Google account. If you have been wanting an independent tasks list then join us as we look at the Tasks extension for Google Chrome. Tasks in Action As soon as you have finished installing the extension you are ready to start adding new tasks to your list. Enter your task into the “Text Area” and press “Enter” to add the task to the list. Note: Your tasks list will be retained (in the order you set) when you close and then reopen your browser. In just moments you can have your task list ready to go. Notice that there is also a “numerical indicator” attached to the “Toolbar Button” so that you will always know how many tasks you have left to complete. You can use the “drag and drop” function to rearrange your list into a more proper order if needed. When you are finished with a task all that you will need to do is click on the “Checkmark” to remove it from the list. If you need to make a new entry similar to an existing one simply right click and the text is automatically pasted into the “Text Area”. Make any desired changes and press “Enter” to add your new task to the list. Prefer to skip using the drop-down window? Click on “Tasks” at the top to open your list in a new tab instead. The tasks list looked very nice in our new tab. Being able to use the style that best suits your needs makes this a very convenient extension. Conclusion The Tasks extension is a perfect fit for anyone who needs a tasks list available but does not want to be tied down with an online account. Quick, simple and best of all hassle free. • L2TP server - site-to-site vpn connection

  I am not sure this is the right place for this question but here goes. We want to connect users using an L2TP VPN connection to a users at the other end of a SonicWall site-to-site VPN. Currently we have a SonicWall firewall/router contraption in the home-office that is connected to a far-office over a VPN. Communications with machines in the home-office and far-office is fine. We also have an L2TP server running on the SonicWall that outside users can connect to. This gives them access to machines in the home-office. Communication between outside users and the home-office is fine. However outside users connected to the home-office via the L2TP server can't communicate with machines in the far-office. Will there need to be network bridging or routing needed? Or will this simply be a firewall setting to get this working? Thanks for any help or clues you provide! Rob

Our last post featured a conversation with the beautiful and talented Eva Mendez, so today we're featuring something for those of you who prefer the other gender of our fair species. This dude has quite the hardware challenge ahead of him. He hasn't begun to find out what's really under that hood. Life is much easier for you and me, thanks to Jeff Wright and Suzanne Zorn. They wrote a wicked cool article about Oracle VM Server for SPARC. Here's a little bit about it... Looking Under the Hood of Networking in Oracle VM Server for x86 Oracle VM Server for SPARC lets you create logical networks out of physical Ethernet ports, bonded ports, VLAN segments, virtual MAC addresses (VNICs), and network channels. You can then assign channels (or "roles") to each logical network so that it handles the type of traffic you want it to. Greg King explains how you go about doing this, and how Oracle VM Server for SPARC implements the network infrastructure you configured. He also describes how the VM interacts with paravirtualized guest operating systems, hardware virtualized operating systems, and VLANs. Finally, he provides an example that shows you how it all looks from the VM Manager view, the logical view, and the command line view of Oracle VM Server for x86. • Offline Outlook 2007 global address book slow to update

  Outlook 2007 talking to an Exchange 2007 server. Usual set-up of personal contacts and a site wide global address book. Distribution lists are often created by IT in the global address book but it sometimes takes days for them to appear in the local offline copy. Performing a manual download of the address book doesn't help. Problem doesn't occur with non-offline mode of Outlook 2007. Any ideas? Server or client side issue? Cheers, Rob.
