• How do I share a WiX fragment in two WiX projects?

  We have a WiX fragment in a file SomeDialog.wxs that prompts the user for some information. It's referenced in another fragment in InstallerUI.wxs file that controls the dialog order. Of course, Product.wxs is our main file. Works great. Now I have a second Visual Studio 2008 Wix 3.0 Project for the .MSI of another application and it needs to ask the user for the same information. I can't seem to figure out the best way to share the file so that changing the information requested will result in both .MSIs getting the new behavior. I honestly can't tell if a merge module, an .wsi (include) or a .wixlib is the right solution. I would have hoped to find a simple example of someone doing this but I have failed thus far. Edit: Based on Rob Mensching's wixlib blog entry, a wixlib may be the answer, but I am still searching for an example of how to do this.

  I'm doing the Rob Conery mvc storefront and at one place I'm suppose to get categories but I get an error with this linq query and I can not get why. • Debugging asp.net with firefox and visual studio.net - very slow compared to IE

  Debugging asp.net websites/web projects in visual studio.net 2005 with Firefox is loads slower than using IE. I've read something somewhere that there is a way of fixing this but i can't for the life of me find it again. Does anyone know what i'm on about and can point me in the right direction please? Cheers John edit sorry rob i haven't explained myself very well(again). I prefer Firefox for debugging (firebug etc) hitting F5 when debugging with IE the browser launches really quickly and clicking around my web application is almost instant and when a breakpont is hit i get to my code straight away with no delays. hitting F5 when debugging with FireFox the browser launches really slowly (ok i have plugins that slow FF loading) but clicking around my web application is really really slow and when a breakpoint is hit it takes ages to break into code. i swear i've read something somewhere that there is a setting in Firefox (about:config maybe?) that when changed to some magic setting sorts all this out.

  I am selecting an IEnumerable<dynamic> from the database using Rob Conery's Massive framework. The structure comes back in a flat format Poco C#. I need to transform the data and output it to a Json array (format show at bottom). I thought I could do the transform using linq (my unsuccessful effort is shown below): using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Json; using System.Linq; using System.ServiceModel.Web; .... • Mutex names - best practice?

  Related to this question, what is the best practice for naming a mutex? I realize this may vary with OS and even with version (esp for Windows), so please specify platform in answering. My interest is in Win XP and Vista. EDIT: I am motivated by curiousity, because in Rob Kennedy's comment under his (excellent) Answer to the above-linked Question, he implied that the choice of mutex name is non-trivial and should be the subject of a separate question.   I'm trying to do a left join in subsonic 3 using linq but it doesn't seem to work, I get a big error. var post = from p in Post.All() join q in Quote.All() on p.ID equals q.PostID into pq where p.ID == id.Value from qt in pq.DefaultIfEmpty() select new {p, qt}; I'm using subsonic 3, latest GIT version from Rob, but I'm getting an error, see below, when I try a left join. I have searched but I didn't found any solution. Can anyone explain to me why the error and how to fix it? • How can I create and manage a multi-tenant ASP MVC application

  Hi, I want to create a multi-tenant application that uses the hostname to determine the customer. For example: CustomerOne.myapp.com AnotherCo.myapp.com AndOneMore.myapp.com ... I can do the database and security side with no problems, I can also get the hostname from the URL, but what I am struggling to find out is how to create the basic plumbing that would allow a new customer to sign up online, provide their company name, and for the application to create the new URL, ready to be used straight away.   I've got a table of people - an ID primary key and a name. In my application, people can have 0 or more real-world relationships with other people, so Jack might "work for" Jane and Tom might "replace" Tony and Bob might "be an employee of" Rob and Bob might also "be married to" Mary. What's the best way to represent this in the database? A many to many intersect table? A series of self joins? A relationship table with one row per relationship pair and type, where I insert records for the relationship in both directions?

  I've been developing a Silverlight application for a company's website and have encountered a problem. Up until now I have been programming this locally, now I need to publish the program onto the website; the issue is that FileStream can only access local files with elevated permissions.   Hello there. I have a question on the java applet.I've created a java applet,which is a board game,that can have a 2*2 array with row number and column number both set to 9 by default. Now I want to extend my applet a bit,that the user can specify the size they want on the command-line,then the applet class will create an applet with correspoding size. I try to add a constructor in the applet class,but the Eclipse complains,I also tried another class,which will create an instance of this applet with size as an instance variable,but it is not working. Could anyone help me a little bit on where to put a main() method that can take care of user-specified board sized,then create an array in my applet class accordingly? Thanks a lot. Rob

• Storing Tables of Information on the Android Platform.

  I have about twenty pages of information that is stored in tables that needs to be stored in my Android application. Each column is a designated stop on a bus route and the column is filled with times that the bus will be at the stop. There is also certain information that needs to be associated with some times, such as if the bus is handicap accessible at a certain time. Here is an example of one of the tables: Bus Times I have thought about using a SQL lite as that seems as though it would be able to store these tables quite easily; but when I think of using SQL I think of dynamic data storage and this shouldn't be changing more than once a year. Is SQL appropriate for this application? Is there a better way to do this? Thanks, Rob

• Intermittent "No Database Selected" in PHP/MySQL?

  Have a PHP/MySQL form with a dropdown box containing a list of 350 names. When any random name is selected, sometimes it works & displays info about that name from the database, and sometimes the form gives the error "No Database Selected". Here's what I've tried, pretty much grasping at straws as I'm not a programmer: Increasing max_connections in /etc/my.cnf from 200 to 2000 (even though only 4-5 connections are made and it's a lightly used server) Changing mysql_pconnect to mysql_connect Adding the word true to this connection string: $mysql = mysql_pconnect($hostname_mysql, $username_mysql, $password_mysql, true) or trigger_error(mysql_error(),E_USER_ERROR); Changing the word require_once to require on this line: [?php require('/home/user/Connections/mysql.php'); ?] Enabling MySQL & PHP query & error logging.   Having problems related to WPF WebBrowser not having a visual. Reason being, that it actually a wrapper around the winforms browser. Anyways, I searched the web for any solution to this problem, and got hold of the following suggestions: http://chriscavanagh.wordpress.com/2009/08/25/a-real-wpf-webbrowser/ http://rob.runtothehills.org/archives/60 The first one solves everything, but seems like an overkill. Plus, the dll's should be licensed for commercial use. The second one seems simple, but not able to figure out when to refresh the screen. Plus there's so much to do like sending mouse and keyboard messages to the webbrowser. P.S. The problem I'm trying to solve is to show the same webbrowser on different windows. They both must be interactive, and always in sync visually.

• PHP MySQL New Lines / Whitespaces from textarea

  I've a problem about whitespaces and new lines at the beginning of a textarea. I send a json string with ajax to the php script. Then I decode the string into an php array (with json_decode). So I have a string in this array with two line breaks at the beginning. If a print the text from the array, the line breaks are there, but if I store the text into the mysql database, the line breaks are gone... Only at the beginning of the string, the line breaks gone... At the rest of the string, the line breaks are ok. Thanks for your answers! rob

What I am trying to do is set up a database that will store time information for bus routes.   Hello, Hopefully my title was descriptive enough to attract the right help. I want to write a function that will return 1 thing, and modify a provided pointer in another. My current function declaration is . . . char * afterURL replaceURLS(char * body) What I want to do is copy all of body's data into a new string, and set body to point to this new data. I then want afterURL to point to a location within the new string. My issue is getting the actual pointer that is passed in to this function to point to the new data. Thanks in advance! Rob

  I'm real interested in using SubSonic, I've downloaded it and I'm enjoying it so far, but looking at the activity on github and googlegroups it doesn't seem to be very active and looks a lot like a project that's dying. There's no videos about it on tekpub and Rob seems to be using nHibernate for all his projects these days. I don't want to focus on learning SubSonic and integrating it into my projects if it's not going to live much longer. So my question is what's happening with subsonic development, is there a new release imminent is there lots going on behind the scenes or is it as inactive as it seems?

• Installing the Updated XP Mode which Requires no Hardware Virtualization

  Good news for those of you who have a computer without Hardware Virtualization, Microsoft had dropped the requirement so you can now run XP Mode on your machine. Here we take a look at how to install it and getting working on your PC. Microsoft has dropped the requirement that your CPU supports Hardware Virtualization for XP Mode in Windows 7. Before this requirement was dropped, we showed you how to use SecureAble to find out if your machine would run XP Mode. If it couldn’t, you might have gotten lucky with turning Hardware Virtualization on in your BIOS, or getting an update that would enable it. If not, you were out of luck or would need a different machine. Note: Although you no longer need Hardware Virtualization, you still need Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate version of Windows 7. Download Correct Version of XP Mode For this article we’re installing it on a Dell machine that doesn’t support Hardware Virtualization on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit version. The first thing you’ll want to do is go to the XP Mode website and select your edition of Windows 7 and language. Then there are three downloads you’ll need to get from the page. Windows XP Mode, Windows Virtual PC, and the Windows XP Mode Update (All Links Below). Windows genuine validation is required before you can download the XP Mode files. To make the validation process easier you might want to use IE when downloading these files and validating your version of Windows. Installing XP Mode After validation is successful the first thing to download and install is XP Mode, which is easy following the wizard and accepting the defaults. The second step is to install KB958559 which is Windows Virtual PC.   After it’s installed, a reboot is required. After you’ve come back from the restart, you’ll need to install KB977206 which is the Windows XP Mode Update.   After that’s installed, yet another restart of your system is required. After the update is configured and you return from the second reboot, you’ll find XP Mode in the Start menu under the Windows Virtual PC folder. When it launches accept the license agreement and click Next. Enter in your log in credentials… Choose if you want Automatic Updates or not… Then you’re given a message saying setup will share the hardware on your computer, then click Start Setup. While setup completes, you’re shown a display of what XP Mode does and how to use it. XP Mode launches and you can now begin using it to run older applications that are not compatible with Windows 7. Conclusion This is a welcome news for many who want the ability to use XP Mode but didn’t have the proper hardware to do it. The bad news is users of Home versions of Windows still don’t get to enjoy the XP Mode feature officially. • Read Mobi eBooks on Kindle for PC

  Do you use your PC as a eBook reader?  Kindle for PC makes it easy to read thousands of books from the Kindle Store on your computer. What you may not know is that is also works with .mobi format too, so you can increase the amount of books you can read. Amazon has jumpstarted the eBook market with their popular Kindle device.  Last fall Amazon unveiled Kindle for PC, and we reviewed how you can Read Kindle Books On Your Computer with Kindle for PC.  Whether or not you own a Kindle or other eBook reader, this is a great way to take advantage of the thousands of eBooks available from the Kindle Store today. It supports azw, prc, and tpz format, which are sold from the Kindle store, but it also supports Mobipocket (.mobi) eBooks that are not DRM protected.  Here’s how you can add them to Kindle for PC so you can easily read them on your PC Getting Started: First, make sure you have Kindle for PC (link below) installed on your computer. Sign in with your Amazon account when you first run it. Kindle for PC lets you easily read eBooks downloaded from the Kindle Store, but it doesn’t have any way to add other eBooks directly from the program. To add eBooks, you can sometimes download and double-click on the books, and they will open in Kindle for PC and be automatically added to the library.  However, this does not always seem to work. So instead, browse to your Documents folder (simply click on the Documents link on your Start menu), and double-click on the My Kindle Content folder. This folder contains all the Kindle books you have downloaded.  If you have other eBooks you would like to add to Kindle for PC, simply drag-and-drop or copy and paste them into this folder.  Here we have a .mobi formatted book downloaded from the Gutenberg Project that we’re dragging into the folder. Now, close and reopen Kindle for PC.  It should now show your new eBook right beside the eBooks you have downloaded from the Kindle Store. These eBooks work just the same as the ones downloaded from the Kindle store, and you can change font size and add bookmarks just as with other eBooks. The eBooks downloaded this way may show up with either a Amazon logo or a mobile device icon.  You should only see the mobile device icon on .mobi files formatted for mobile devices; other ones should show up with the Amazon logo.  In this screen, Pilgrim’s Progress is a standard .mobi book, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a mobipocket book, and the others are downloaded from the Kindle Store. Conclusion This is a great way to read eBooks from across the internet on Kindle for PC.  Wikipedia’s Kindle page has a list of websites that offer eBooks formatted for the Kindle, so be sure to check it out for more books. • Create a Search Filter List in Google Chrome

  Are you tired of unwanted and/or non-relevant results cluttering up the search results at Bing, Yahoo, and Google? With the Search Filter extension for Chrome you can easily remove the unwanted “chaff” from your search results. Note: The extension only works on Bing, Yahoo, and Google at this time. Before For our example we conducted a search for “anime wallpapers” at Yahoo Singapore, Bing Singapore, and Google. In each set of results we decided to focus on results that would display either a yellow or red warning color from WOT. You can see our targeted result for Yahoo Singapore… The one for Bing Singapore… And the targeted result from Google. Search Filter in Action As soon as you install the extension you should take a quick look at the “Options”. At first the “Filters List Area” will be empty but will not remain so for long as you create your own filter list. The second part may or may not be of interest to you…the ability to opt into the filter service. If you opt in your filter list will be connected to your “Google Account” and will be available on any of your Chrome installs with the extension installed (and set to “Opt In”). Keep in mind that if you choose this option the filter list that you create will be aggregated anonymously and have a GUID number attached to it. After installing the extension we refreshed each of our three search pages…notice the small red circle button beside each search result link. Clicking on the red circle button will cause the entire browser window area to “shade out” temporarily while you decide between adding that website to the filter list or cancelling the action. If you add a website to the filter list that result will immediately disappear from the search results list without refreshing the webpage. Looks like we have another website at the bottom that we could add to the filter list… Click, click, click! After adding one website from each of the three search services you can see that our filter list has gotten off to a nice start. If for some reason you accidentally add a website to the list or change your mind about a website simply click on the red circle button to remove that particular listing. Conclusion If you are looking for an easy way to create a search filter list then this is definitely an extension that is worth taking the time to look at. • Has the recent version of subversion dealt with "Access Denied" errors from windows services that mo

  Does anyone know if this subversion "bug" has been dealt with? https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/subversion/tags/1.6.9/www/faq.html#windows-access-denied I'm getting occasional "Access Denied" errors on Windows. They seem to happen at random. Why? These appear to be due to the various Windows services that monitor the filesystem for changes (anti-virus software, indexing services, the COM+ Event Notification Service). This is not really a bug in Subversion, which makes it difficult for us to fix. A summary of the current state of the investigation is available here. A workaround that should reduce the incidence rate for most people was implemented in revision 7598; if you have an earlier version, please update to the latest release. Currently I am experiencing this same behavior in version 1.5.6 when I try and do a SVN switch (I have suspected McAfee as the culprit for a while and when I saw this I feel it validates my suspicions). I read through the link given but it seems pretty old, so I didn't know if this FAQ was just outdated and the issue has actually be resolved. Thanks for any help. These days, watching an ordinary ant painstakingly carry a leaf in Animal Planet can be an exhilarating experience as you get to see not only the slightest movement but also the demarcation line between the insect’s head, thorax and abdomen. The crystal clear imagery was made possible by the sharp minds and the tinkering hands of the scientists that have designed the modern world’s HDTV. What is HDTV and what makes people so agog to have this new innovation in TV watching? HDTV stands for High Definition TV. Television viewing has indeed made a big leap. From the grainy black and whites, TV viewing had moved to colored TVs, progressed to SD TVs and now to HDTV. HDTV is the emerging trend in TV viewing as it delivers bigger and clearer pictures and better audio. Viewers can have a cinema-like TV viewing experience right in the comforts of their own home. With HDTV the viewer is allowed to have a better viewing range. With Standard (SD) TV, the viewer has to be at a distance that is from 3 to 6 times the size of the screen. HDTV allows the viewer to enjoy sharper and clearer images as it is possible to sit at a distance that is 1.5 or 3 times the size of the screen without noticing any image pixilation. Although HDTV appears to be a fairly new innovation, this system has actually existed in various forms years ago. Development of the HDTV was started in Europe as early as 1940s. However, the NTSC and the PAL/SECAM, the two analog TV standards became dominant and became popular worldwide. The analog TV was replaced by the digital TV platform in the 1990s. Even during the analog era, attempts have been made to develop HDTV. Japan has come out with MUSE system. However, due to channel bandwidth requirement concerns, the program was shelved. The entry of four organizations into the HDTV market spurred the development of a beneficial coalition. The AT&T, ATRC, MIT and Zenith HDTV combined forces. In 1993, a Grand Alliance was formed. This group is composed of researchers and HDTV manufacturers. A common standard for the broadcast system of HDTV was developed. In 1995, the system was tested and found successful. With the higher screen resolution of HDTV, viewing has never been more enjoyable.
