• Announcing Monthly Silverlight Giveaways on MichaelCrump.Net

  I've been working with different companies to give away a set of Silverlight controls to my blog readers for the past few months. I’ve decided to setup this page and a friendly URL for everyone to keep track of my monthly giveaway. The URL to bookmark is: http://giveaways.michaelcrump.net. • Why did my power supply fry itself?

  I am in europe. There was a switch on my psu that could switch the voltage between 230v and 130v (not 100% sure). In europe we use 230. I switched the psu to 110 and turned it on. Several sparks and a power failiure resulted, the psu was fried. Can someone explain why this happened. I was assuming that because the system was using 230 and the psu only draws 130 it would be safe cause it's less. I guess i was wrong. Can someone explain me the physics behind this.

• Can't connect to Apple Time Capsule in home network using Home Plugs from Win 7 Machine

  I have the following home network setup with subnet 255.255.255.0 but recently moved my time capsule to a different location when I added a third Home Plug and can no longer ping or map a network drive to it from the Windows 7 Machine. However using Airport Utility on the Windows 7 machine I can manually configure the Time Capsule. Using a Macbook on WIFI Network 1 or 2 - I can backup to the time capsule, so its accessible via both the router wifi network and the time capsule wifi network. The Time Capsule is set to BRIDGE function - ie no NAT or DHCP server enabled. Any bright sparks out there that can help diagnose the problem? So I'm just going to hit the highlights here... Scott Guthrie Thanks for not only being the level you are at Microsoft, but for being so approachable, easy to talk to, willing to help everyone, and above all knowledgable. My first level manager at my last position asked if Visual Studio was a graphics program... and you step up to a laptop at a conference and type "File->New Program" ... 'nuff said... oh yeah, thanks for the shoutout! John Papa Thanks for being a good friend, ramroding the Firestarter, being a great guy to be around, and for the poster... holy crap is that cool. Tim Heuer Thanks for all you did as a great DE in Phoenix, and for helping out so many of us, of course being a great guy, and for the poster as well... I think you and John shared that task. In no order at all my buddy Michael Washington, Laurent Bugnion (the other half of the first Silverlight MVP of the Year) Tim Sneath, Mike Harsh, Chad Campbell and Bryant Likes (from back in the day), Adam Kinney, Jesse Liberty, Jeff Paries, Pete Brown, András Velvárt, David Kelly, Michael Palermo, Scott Cate, Erik Mork, and on and on... don't feel bad if your name didn't appear, I have simply too many supporters to name. Silverlight Firestarter Indeed All the people mentioned here, and all the MVPs knew Silverlight was NOT dead, but because of a very unfortunate circumstance, the popular media opinion became that. Consequently the Firestarter exploded from a laid-back event to a global conference. People worked their ass off getting bits ready and presentations using those bits. All to stem the flow of misinformation. All involved please accept my personal thanks for an absolutely awesome job. I had the priviledge of watching the 'prep' on Wednesday afternoon, and was blown away the first time I saw the 3D demo... and have been blown away every time I've seen it since. Not to mention all the other goodness in Silverlight 5. Yes I hit 1000 on my blog, but more importantly, all of you are blogging and using Silverlight, and Microsoft hit one completely out of the park... no... they knocked it out of the neighborhood with the Firestarter. It was amazing to be there for it, and it will be awesome to use the new bits as we get them. Keep reading, there's tons more to come with Silverlight and SilverlightCream following along behind. • Moving from Silverlight 4 Beta to RC - Part 1

  The other day I had finished up my Task-It Webinar, written a few blog posts, and knew the time had come to move from my Silverlight 4 Beta environment up to the latest RC (release candidate) bits that were released last Monday. What disappointed me when I went to the Silverlight 4 Information Page is that it told me what to install, but not what to uninstall first. Uninstalling I'm not entirely sure if I had to uninstall anything, or if installing the new stuff would just work, but in poking around the web I found posts stating that you must uninstall the following items first. Unfortunately I'm going by memory here and have not been able to find my way back to the magic page I found in the myriad of posts that I went through: Microsoft VisualStudio Beta 2 Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Extended (apparently this must be done *before* the next one) Microsoft .NET Framework Client Profile Microsoft Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio 2010 WCF RIA Services Preview for Visual Studio 2010 While I was at it, I removed a bunch of other stuff, like Blend 3, Blend 4, the SDK's associated with them, and a bunch other stuff that was old. Of course, I didn't really want/need to keep any Silverlight 3 stuff around as I am developing Task-It in Silverlight 4. If I need a Silverlight 3 environment at some point I'll set it up in a virtual environment. NOTE: One thing that I did not uninstall is the Microsoft Silverlight 4 Toolkit November 2009. The reason is that they have not released the March version yet, so if you uninstall this, youll end up having to reinstall it. Installing OK, now that I had all of that old stuff off my machine, now it was time to get the new stuff. For this part I liked Tim Heuer's post, A Guide to What has Changed in Silverlight 4 RC better than the Silverlight 4 Information Page. VisualStudio 2010 RC - I installed Ultimate, but you may not need that version. No harm, it's free for now anyway. I downloaded the .exe and the 3 .rar files, then ran the .exe. I then extracted the contents of the ISO (using WinZip) to a new directory, and now had Setup.exe, a bunch of .cab files and some other assorted stuff. I simply ran Setup.exe and chose custom install (only because I wanted to uncheck Visual C++...I don't really have a need for that) Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio 2010 - As mentioned in Tim's blog post, this installs this installs Silverlight developer runtime, SDK, tools, and this installs Silverlight developer runtime, SDK, tools, and WCF RIA Services. WCF RIA Services Toolkit March 2010 - I'm not sure if/when I'll need any of this stuff, but no harm in installing it anyway. Expression Blend 4 beta - Only if you plan to use Blend, which I do. Windows Phone Developer Tools - Only if you are interested in playing with Windows Phone 7 development. Wrap Up Hopefully I got those steps right.   I'm building an FTP client from scratch and I've noticed that the response codes aren't immediate (which is no surprise). What would be a good approach for getting the corresponding code to a command? Below is an example of the output of Filezilla server. The response code is the three digits near the end of each line. • is it possible to turn off vdso on glibc side?

  I am aware that passing vdso=0 to kernel can turn this feature off, and that the dynamic linker in glibc can automatic detect and use vdso feature from kernel. Here I met with this problem. There is a RHEL 5.6 box (kernel 2.6.18-238.el5) in my institution where I only have a normal user access, probably suffering from RHEL bug 673616. I cannot simply upgrade the box to a newer RHEL version, nor could I turn VDSO off via sysctl or proc. The question is, is there a way to compile glibc so that it turns off VDSO unconditionally?

• Appending facts into an existing prolog file.

  Hi, I'm having trouble inserting facts into an existing prolog file, without overwriting the original contents. Suppose I have a file test.pl: :- dynamic born/2. born(john,london). born(tim,manchester). If I load this in prolog, and I assert more facts: | ?- assert(born(laura,kent)). yes I'm aware I can save this by doing: |?- tell('test.pl'),listing(born/2),told. Which works but test.pl now only contains the facts, not the ":- dynamic born/2": born(john,london). born(tim,manchester). born(laura,kent). This is problematic because if I reload this file, I won't be able to insert anymore facts into test.pl because ":- dynamic born/2." doesn't exist anymore. I read somewhere that, I could do: append('test.pl'),listing(born/2),told. which should just append to the end of the file, however, I get the following error: ! Existence error in user:append/1 ! procedure user:append/1 does not exist ! goal: user:append('test.pl') Btw, I'm using Sicstus prolog. Does this make a difference? Thanks!

  I'm using net.sf.json with a Java project and it works great. The conversion of this XML: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <important-data certified="true" processed="true"> <timestamp>232423423423</timestamp> <authors> <author> <firstName>Tim</firstName> <lastName>Leary</lastName> </author> </authors> <title>Flashbacks</title> <shippingWeight>1.4 pounds</shippingWeight> <isbn>978-0874778700</isbn> </important-data> converts to this in JSON: { "@certified": "true", "@processed": "true", "timestamp": "232423423423", "authors": [ { "firstName": "Tim", "lastName": "Leary" }], "title": "Flashbacks", "shippingWeight": "1.4 pounds", "isbn": "978-0874778700" } However, the root tag <important-data> is lost in the conversion. Being new to XML and JSON, I am not sure if this is suppose to be the correct behaviour. If not, is there any way to tell net.sf.json to convert it while keeping the root node property? Thanks.

• Limit rate of outgoing UDP packets per second

  Hi, since Teamspeak version 3 sends lots of packets per user and our provider is getting problems with his infrastructure above 20.000 packets per second we have to limit it that our servers are not going to be shut down. Red a lot about iptables but was not able to find the right rules. Could you give me an advise how to manage that the server is not going to send more than 19k packets per seconds? • Too nervous to install

  Yesterday I (a professional rugby prop of somewhat limited intellect) landed in http://htmlagilitypack.codeplex.com/ and found myself stranded in a town with no signposts. The locals don't need signposts - they know their way around - so who gives a hoot about visitors? Well I'm a visitor and I'm lost. Here's my plea to the good burgesses of Codeplex-sans-signs: HELP!! Let me back-track and explain what landed me at the bottom of this tangled ruck. There's a "Download" button positioned near the top-right of the Codeplex web page, right? Like the Sword of Damocles, a down-arrow to the left of the button indicates, presumably, what a download would include: CURRENT 1.4.0 Stable DATE Fri May 7 2010 at 7:00 AM STATUS Stable With a simple-minded confidence that has since deserted me (the confidence - not the simple-mindedness), I clicked "Download". This introduced 3 new files to my computer: HtmlAgilityPack.dll, HtmlAgilityPack.pdb, and HtmlAgilityPack.XML This is when the first stab of doubt penetrated that globe between my cauliflower ears that I call a head. Where's the dot cs? Somewhere in Codeplex, I'd read advice to another lost soul to "download and build the HTMLAgilityPack solution". As I've done so many times as an All Black prop, I glared at the opposition front row - ah, I mean the 3 new files. Shouldn't one of them have a ".cs" on the back of his jersey - er, on the end of its name? Or is this just how they play the game in Codeplex-sans-signs? Undaunted (props have more courage than sense) I packed into my first C# scrum. The half-back feeds the ball in, and the front rows collapse - er, the debugging stops at this line of my code: "HtmlAgilityPack.HtmlDocument doc = new HtmlAgilityPack.HtmlDocument();" Then the Referee blows his whistle and announces one of those verdicts that's utterly indecipherable to your average loose-head prop: Locating source for 'C:\Source\htmlagilitypack\Trunk\HtmlAgilityPack\HtmlDocument.cs'. (Chaz, if you're reading this, I'm not plugging for nothing - just write kindly about me in your next report, okay?) Didn't these same four files flummox Chaz The Great? He told me about it. Chaz left a message with Codeplex and then solved the problem by just walking away. Typical journalist, huh. But I'm not like that. I don't walk away. I'm made of the sort of stubborn stuff that becomes an All Black prop. Hence this impassioned plea: GOOD TOWNSFOLK OF CODEPLEX-SANS-SIGNS, WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT? Can somebody point me to Main Street? How does a simpleton install 'C:\Source\htmlagilitypack\Trunk\HtmlAgilityPack\HtmlDocument.cs'? I'm willing to prostrate myself and grovel to the first kind face that passes in front of my rapidly clouding sight. So help me, I'd even tug my forelock if I had one! Should I hold forth my rod over the wilderness, and create a folder called 'C:\Source\htmlagilitypack\Trunk\HtmlAgilityPack\' or some such? If so, what files should I move into it? ANYTHING else a dum-ass should know about? - and I mean ANYTHING - you just don't know how witless a punch-drunk prop can be.. %( Whenever I've installed other programs they've given me an ".exe" or ".msi" that I can click on and it's all done for me like magic. • Parallel Haskell in order to find the divisors of a huge number

  I have written the following program using Parallel Haskell to find the divisors of 1 billion. import Control.Parallel parfindDivisors :: Integer->[Integer] parfindDivisors n = f1 `par` (f2 `par` (f1 ++ f2)) where f1=filter g [1..(quot n 4)] f2=filter g [(quot n 4)+1..(quot n 2)] g z = n `rem` z == 0 main = print (parfindDivisors 1000000000) I've compiled the program with ghc -rtsopts -threaded findDivisors.hs and I run it with: findDivisors.exe +RTS -s -N2 -RTS I have found a 50% speedup compared to the simple version which is this: findDivisors :: Integer->[Integer] findDivisors n = filter g [1..(quot n 2)] where g z = n `rem` z == 0 My processor is a dual core 2 duo from Intel. I was wondering if there can be any improvement in above code. Because in the statistics that program prints says: Parallel GC work balance: 1.01 (16940708 / 16772868, ideal 2) and SPARKS: 2 (1 converted, 0 overflowed, 0 dud, 0 GC'd, 1 fizzled) What are these converted , overflowed , dud, GC'd, fizzled and how can help to improve the time.

ASP.NET 4’s Browser Capabilities Support: Nice blog post by Stephen Walther that talks about the new browser definition capabilities support coming with ASP.NET 4. Integrating Twitter into an ASP.NET Website: Nice article by Scott Mitchell that demonstrates how to call and integrate Twitter from within your ASP.NET applications. Improving CSS with .LESS: Nice article by Scott Mitchell that describes how to optimize CSS using .LESS – a free, open source library. ASP.NET MVC Upgrading ASP.NET MVC 1 applications to ASP.NET MVC 2: Eilon Lipton from the ASP.NET team has a nice post that describes how to easily upgrade your ASP.NET MVC 1 applications to ASP.NET MVC 2.  He has an automated tool that makes this easy. Note that automated MVC upgrade support is also built-into VS 2010.  Use the tool in this blog post for updating existing MVC projects using VS 2008. Dependency Graphics: Jason Zander (who runs the VS team) has a nice blog post that covers the new dependency graph support within VS 2010.  This makes it easier to visualize the dependencies within your application.  Also check out this video here. Silverlight Silverlight 4 Training Course: Nice free set of training courses from Microsoft that can help bring you up to speed on all of the new Silverlight 4 features and how to build applications with them.  Updated and current with the recently released Silverlight 4 RC build and tools. • Chris Brook-Carter at the Oracle Retail Week Awards VIP Reception

  The Oracle VIP Reception at the Oracle Retail Week Awards last week saw retail luminaries from around the UK and Europe gather to have a drink and celebrate the successes of retail in the last year. Guests included Lord Harris of Peckham, Tesco's Philip Clarke, Vanessa Gold from Ann Summers, former Retail Week editor Tim Danaher, Richard Pennycook from Morrisons and Ian Cheshire from Kingfisher Group. The new Retail Week editor-in-chief, Chris Brook-Carter, attended and took the time to speak to the guests about the value of the Oracle Retail Week Awards to the industry and to thank Oracle for its dedication to supporting the industry. Chris said: "I'd like to say a real heartfelt thanks to our partner this evening: Oracle. I had the privilege of being at the judging day and I got to meet Sarah and the team and I was struck by not only the passion that they have for the whole awards system and everything that means in terms of rewarding excellence within the retail industry but also their commitment to retail in general, and it's that sort of relationship that marks out retail as such a fantastic sector to be involved in."
