• Sound card doesn't work and yet does.

  I have a really weird one tonight. Today we had a LAN party and all of a sudden the sound on a couple PC's stopped working for programs like the games, windows media player, etc. However, when errors would popup (like trying to change the volume settings) you would here the default error chime. Restarting the computers you would here the logoff-login sounds and after a restart the sound would work for a bit in both games and apps and then suddenly stop. Restarting also didn't always fix the problem. I can't figure this out. If the sound card/driver didn't work then how could we hear sounds from the windows sound scheme? No sound with VLC, windows media player, youtube, games, nothing. The only thing I can figure out is that this is a bad game crashing the primary driver or some kind of weird virus these PC's might have picked up.

• Would hybrid drive work after SSD failure

  Hybrid hard drive combines SSD with traditional hard drives. I know that SSD can fail much often than traditional hard drives. So I want to ask that, when the SSD part of the hybrid drive fails, would I still be able to use the traditional hard drive? If it won't work like that, then I will consider add-in SATA cards instead, as it delegates risk much better. EDIT: I guess it differs from model to model, so if yes what models would work. (I am evaluating Seagate DX for now)

  I've a dlink di-524 as main router (192.168.0.1) connected to Internet and a second router (192.168.0.2), a tplink wr841n, with WDS enabled and correctly configured to "join" with dlink. After I connect via wireless a laptop (192.168.0.100) to tplink and both work good but with the laptop I can't go to Internet. It seems as WDS not work. With the laptop I can only ping the tplink but other ping (the dlink or other LAN computer not responding). What's the problem? Perhaps also the dlink must have the WDS option? Thanks.

I could not find a direct way though. So I redirected the eval string to a temporary batch file and executed it. The temporary batch file was successfully created but calling it did not work in the above case. I noticed that any command after the test.bat creation did not work.

• Windows 8 FN key doesn't work for brightness

  I have an Asus laptop with Windows 8 and fn+f5/fn+f6 keys (for brightness) doesn't work. In fact, they work, but they can increase/decrease the brightness only 1 time. I mean - after pressing fn+f5 once, nothing happens if I try to press fn+f5 again, before I press fn+f6. This only happens after logging in. At the login screen and during Windows boot I can adjust the brightness as I want, but after login I can't. I installed the latest ATK driver and NVIDIA graphics driver for Windows 8, and I think that my problem is related to conflict with drivers. I tried to reinstall/delete some drivers, but it didn't help. How can I detect where is the problem? Thanks.

• Windows doesn't recognise my USB key anymore (it used to work)

  I use my friend's USB flash drive (Corsair flash voyager 16gb) to transfer files from my laptop to my desktop computer. However, since a couple of days my laptop stopped recognizing the USB key.. while there is still no problems with all other computers. I use Windows 7 64 bits if that can help. I tried uninstalling the driver, rebooting and all those kind of tricks, but it won't work. When I connect it and open the "My computer" window, I see "Removable Disk (G:)" for a moment, then it disappears... then it reappears again and it keeps doing that periodically. I can't even right click then hit "Properties" because it disappears. As I recall, it DOES work on every other computers, I think it has to do with the driver but what can I do?

  I was wondering if my Google Tv will seamlessly work with my HTPC. I'm running Windows Media Center using a InfiniTv quad tuner with a cable card. I'm able to connect my GTV with my HTPC and be able to see the GTV interface overlaid on top of media center. Unfortunately, I'm not really able to use the Tv/Movies App to look at live shows and change the channel. I have the Video device setup as Media Center PC, but then the Live Tv App doesn't work. If I change to my tv service provider (Verizon FIOS), the Live Tv App works, but then it won't be able to change the channel.

• UNC access to TFS SharePoint doesn't work

  We are using TFS2010 with the SharePoint document portal. We are trying to access the files in SharePoint using UNC paths (e.g. \tfs2010\sites\DefaultCollection\MyProject) and it just plain doesn't work. From my workstation, I actually get different behaviours depending on the path. Case 1: Path = \tfs2010\sites\DefaultCollection\MyProject\ Result: windows explorer reports a network error "Windows cannot access \tfs2010\sites\DefaultCollection\MyProject\" Case 2: Path = \tfs2010.mycompany.com\sites\DefaultCollection\MyProject\ Result: Windows Security dialog pops up asking for my username and password. I tried entering all combinations of my windows username and password (with and without the domain before the username), but no matter what, my credentials are not accepted. I have no problems accessing the SharePoint site through the web portal - it's just UNC which doesn't work. There doesn't seem to be anything relevant in the event viewer on the server. Anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

• Created a new zone in DNS manager - can't get site bindings to work in iis 7

  Firstly I would like to say that I am a noob when it comes to DNS, I am a web developer and I am trying to setup an intranet site for a charity. I have windows server 2008 and I installed both iis 7 and dns manager. In IIS I have this binding that works - Type: http:// IP Address: 192.168.1.9 Port: 80 Host name: My host name is empty and when I try to navigate to this website on the network, the http code is 200 and the page renders. Now if I try Host name of test.organization.intranet Internet explorer says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and the server response is aborted. In DNS manager I created a new forward lookup zone of organization.intranet I did this through the configure a dns server wizard and I created a host (A) with the same IP as the one being used in IIS. The full Host name is test.organization.intranet but it doesn't work. Maybe I am missing something obvious because it's not an area of IT that I know very well, but I am stuck for why I can't get it to work.

  So, I realised today I take file compression for granted. The ability to bundle a few files together into one, and have it come out smaller than any of them, is something I just accept as a fact, but how does it actually work? I have a limited knowledge of it that includes something to do with replacing all the duplicate entries with pointers, to shrink that way, but beyond that I'm fairly clueless!   So in using Windows 8, I've discovered that the administrative shares are disabled. There seems to be no easy way to get them re-enabled. Is anyone aware of a work around, or solution? I did not have this issue with Windows 7 After disabling UAC. However in Windows 8 this still doesn't work.   I'm using my home server as NAT/router, which works well. Any idea what I have done wrong?

This causes the pi not to show my apache2 website online (I think). The only way I've gotten it to work is using my other linux server to forward using virtual hosts, and that has to use the ip address, too. However, now that I have my other server off, the website doesn't work.

  When I open a letter size PDF and then zoom to 100%, the page physically displayed on my monitor is smaller than a real letter size sheet of paper. How can I make "100%" on the computer screen correspond with "100%" in real life? Details This message suggests that I should be investigating the system-wide DPI settings for my monitor. xdpyinfo reports: dimensions: 1024x768 pixels (271x203 millimeters) resolution: 96x96 dots per inch My monitor has a native display resolution of 1024x768 pixels and a diagonal display size of 12.07 inches. PX CALC returns the following information: DPI: 106.05 Dot Pitch: 0.2395mm Size: 9.66" × 7.24" (24.53cm × 18.39cm) What I've tried so far Running xrandr --dpi 106.05 successfully caused my PDF to appear actual size at 100%, but this effect was lost after rebooting.   I have a brand new Sony Vaio S series laptop.(VPCSA2DGX) It came factory installed with Windows 7 professional Edition 64bit. Runs Intel core i5, 500 GB HDD , 4GB Ram. First I installed ubuntu 11.10 64 bit along side Windows to dual boot. Later,since the problem did not solve, I installed ubuntu 12.04 64bit along side Windows to dual boot. However the problem keeps annoying me. Problem: When running ubuntu 11.10/12.04, the battery lasts only about 1.5 hours. The Fan runs loud and continuously. And there is a lot of heat generated. System monitor shows less than 5% CPU used. My laptop enjoys hybrid graphic and I tried turning off ADM graphic card and keep Intel graphic card on. However I can not get the Fan noise or heat to go away and consequently the battery drain continues. BTW, in windows, the laptop gives 4-5 hours of battery power, Fan is silent and there is no heat problem. Any ideas on how to reduce the fan noise and how to increase battery life in ubuntu 11.10/12.04?

  An airplane, as opposed to, for example, a website, is a system where any failure in certain systems is completely unacceptable, since errors in e.g. flight monitoring can cause the autopilot to malfunction and do a dive. Obviously, this doesn't happen since the brilliant engineers at Boeing and Airbus have checks in the autopilot to make sure it doesn't suddenly decide a dive is a perfectly acceptable and safe maneuver. Or perhaps the computer crashes, and the pilots in the newer fly-by-wire aircraft can no longer actually fly the plane. Of course, there are various safety procedures and redundancies built into these systems to prevent a crash (of both the software and the aircraft). However, on the other hand, it's quite obvious that software isn't perfect—both open source and closed source software do crash regularly, and only the simplest "Hello World" program doesn't fail. How can the engineers who design the software systems in the aeronautic, medical, and other life-or-death industries manage to test their software so that it doesn't fail (and if it does fail, at least fail gracefully)? I'm desperately hoping that you're not all going to go: "Oh, I work for Boeing/Airbus/(some other company) and it's not! Have fun on your next flight/hospital visit."

Anyways, I am trying to get the Firestorm Viewer for Second Life.   I believe the scenario is common mostly in business workflows - for example: loan management the process starts with a loan application, then there's the loan offer, the 'live' loan, and maybe also finished loans. all these objects are related, and share many fields all these objects have also many fields that are unique for each entity the variety of objects maybe large, and the transformation between the may not be linear (for example: a single loan application may end up as several loans of different types) How would you model this? some options: an entity for each type, each containing the relevant fields (possibly grouping related fields as sub entities) - leads to duplication of data. an entity for each object, but instead of duplicating data, each object has a reference to it's predecessor (the loan doesn't contain the loaner details, but a reference to the loan application) - this causes coupling between the object structure, and the way it was created. if we change the loan application, it shouldn't effect the structure of the loan entity. one large entity, with fields for the whole life cycle - this can create 'mega objects' with many fields. it also doesn't work well when there's a one to many or many to many relation between the phases.

• When am I ready for contracting work?

  What skills are required to work on a temp / contracting basis, and how does a developer know when they are ready to work in these circumstances? I have some colleagues who are suggesting contracting work is 'the way to go'; the pay is significantly better. It appears that when a permanent position pays (X times $10k) per year, the corresponding contract position pays almost $X per hour - which is close to twice as much. I look forward to doing this type of work as an experienced expert, but worry that by doing so right now I'd be turning away learning and development opportunities. My assumptions about contract work are the following: less / zero money invested on training and development less concern for job satisfaction and learning ("they won't be here in 12 months") possibly less concern about the overall quality of the project ("we won't be here in 12 months") There are similar questions on stack overflow at the moment but what I've really looking for is: What does the developer give up by moving to contract work? Is it preferable to have structured learning in a permanent position rather than seat-of-the-pants learning in a contract position? What skill leve should the contractor have before making the move? Is there still the same kind of growth in contracting that there is in permanent positions? Rightly or wrongly, I see this as a choice between $ (contracting) and learning / development (permanent). Is this fair?
