• Any Windows based OpenID servers out there? [closed]

  I've been looking to setup an OpenID server for a special project, but haven't found any workable OpenID server software packages. Originally was looking for a *nix solution, and found several, but they all had some kind of issue. So far I've tried JOIDS, community-id, and a couple others I unfortunately can't remember the names of. I've also come to the conclusion that even if I had managed to get one of those going that the management/upgrade cycles would have placed undue burden on the company (only a couple part time sysadmins with *nix knowledge, the day to day people are primarily Windows). So, I'm hoping that there's a Windows one out that will be functional that someone knows about and will be easy for a minimal support environment...

• Has anyone used game salad before and how does it compare with cocos2d in terms of 2d game development

  First a short intro. I am new to the game development space and want to make some 2d games for iOS. I first come across cocos2d and kobold but then wanted something more graphical for rapid prototyping. I then found Game Maker which doesn't support iOS but is fairly easy to learn and then found Game Salad which supports iOS as well as other platforms. I know this question has been ask before but I want to know in terms of the types of games I want to develop what an learning investment path would be best. The types of games genre I am interest are: Side scrollers Simple games like diamond dash or ninja fruits, shanghai, etc Old fashioned zelda or dragonquest type (nintendo fan here:-) 2d adventure RPG games (real time or turn based) Mystery turn based games like carmen sandiego, wizardry, myst etc. So now the question becomes Which game development environment should I invest my time in learning. Game Salad or cocos2d? It would seem game salad would be great for quickies being graphical but in terms of 2d platform games etc would there be speed/performance/feature penalties? Are there certain 2d games genre of the 4 above that Game salad is better at while certain type cocos2d would be better at? Anyone with experience of both can share some pointers? • How can I offer 2.4 ghz wi-fi in a building with strong interference?

  I have a few access points on one floor of a high-rise building. They support both 2.4 ghz and 5ghz. When I used 2.4 ghz, the channel management features did not seem to work and we experienced frequent problems. When I switched to 5 ghz the problems went away. However, the 5ghz standard is much less accepted. And when clients come in, they want 2.4ghz. What can I do? How can I offer 2.4ghz wi-fi in an area with a lot of interference?

• AD Local Admins without password sharing

  My team is building out an Active Directory environment in a small grad school with support for general computer labs, and staff/faculty machine and account management. We have a team of student consultants that are hired to do general help desk work. As of now we have a local admin account on every machine. It has the same password and all of us know it. I know it's not best practice and I want to avoid this with the new setup. We want to have local admin accounts in case there are network issues that prevent AD authentication, but we do not want this account to be generic with a shared password. Is there a way we can get each machine to cache the necessary information to authenticate a group of local admins so that if AD is somehow inaccessible, student consultants can still login with their AD admin accounts?

• Only allow root to change filesystem

  The VPS I manage uses a simple hard link rsync archive daily backup system saved to a loop file. This is great, because each backup only takes up as much space as what has changed each day, and all user/group permissions are kept. I would like to give users direct access to their home directories in each backup, but I'm worried about intentional or accidental backup data destruction, as how it stands now users can actually change, destroy or add to backed up data they originally owned. I've been looking for a way to mount this filesystem similar to an ro mount option, but something that would still allow rw access to root, but I've had absolutely no luck. In other words, I want users to be able to view and copy their backed up data without actually being able to change it, and have that data maintain the original permissions. I've got no real preferences as far as filesystem, as long as it's a standard unix filesystem that can preserve permissions, support hard links and deny write access to users without actually stripping the w permission from everything.

• USB Keyboard works occasionally

  A few days ago I bought a SL640 Hama USB keyboard to use on my laptop with Ubuntu 12.04. But I'm having problems, as it works one time out of 10! While on my girlfriend's laptop, with Win Vista, always works. And on my laptop I have Win7 in dual boot. And I have to say that it always works on it. Here are some infos: ~$ lsusb Bus 006 Device 003: ID 04d9:1503 Holtek Semiconductor, Inc. Shortboard Lefty As you can see, the OS recognized it but the keyboard doesn't react ... even the Caps Lock and Num Lock keys don't blink. Regarding the legacy support (useful for GRUB), I have found no entry in the BIOS. But I'm not interested in it. I just want to use it in Ubuntu. However, in GRUB it works sometimes. Surprisingly, now I have booted my laptop: the usb keyboard hasn't worked in GRUB but it has worked since the ubuntu login! And now I'm typing with it. Well.. it means that Ubuntu has the right drivers and they work. But how to "load" them always correctly? thanks in advance!

  Hello alltogether Currently I am wondering whether it is possible to apply asymetric encryption of a directory in Linux. I would like to achieve the following: Write log files to /var/log/secret Everything written to /var/log/secret is instantly encrypted by a public RSA key (or something similar) The encryption programms I know, i.e. ecryptfs do not support asymetric encryption of files, at least as far as I know. (Correct me if I am wrong). Therefore I am asking here whether you know of any possibility to implement this. Thanks in advance

• How do I improve picture quality while streaming live football (soccer) from my Dell D600 to an HDTV?

  I have fibre broadband with speeds up to 38mbs, my Dell D600 has its max 2gb ram and has an ATI Mobility RADEON 9000 4xAGP 32mb card in it...Its TV support it says is NTSC or PAL in S-video and composite modes with a 7-pin mini-DIN connector (optional S-video to composite video adapter cable) and a vga port which i am using at the moment... The laptop runs Windows XP, an 80g HD with only windows + necessary updates and anti virus software on it..... There is HDMI on the TV, but not the laptop Fairly slow moving and close up pictures arent too bad, but when the movment is fast(a shot on goal) or in the distance, I cant see the ball and the images go out of focus.

• Suggestions for hosted file sharing services

  Before I pose my question, I will give some insight as per my scenario: I work for a small business (cost is an important factor) Our bandwidth is limited and would not support an in-house FTP server We need to share files (mostly pdf, inDesign, Illustrator documents) to our clients, and as we expand, we are finding that our current locally-hosted FTP solution is too slow and is becoming a detriment to our sales team. What we need is a remotely hosted solution to share files with our clients, specifically with the following features: Greater than 100gb of secure storage The Ability to distribute unique log in credentials to clients, granting access to a personalized directory or folder, while limiting access to other files on the server. A relatively simple web-based UI for clients with limited computer knowledge We have considered a dedicated remote server, and web-based services (box.net, yousendit.com, onehub.com, filesanywhere.com) but I am unsure as per the direction we should be taking - have I left another solution out? • Stop Foxit PhantomPDF Standard from Opening PDFs in Internet Explorer 11

  Is there a way to stop Foxit PhantomPDF from opening a linked PDF in the browser plugin? My desired behavior is for it to open the PDF in a Foxit PhantomPDF window. I've looked for an add-in, but there is none. Foxit support recommended the following solution -- select File Preferences File Associations Advanced Uncheck Include Browser... Select OK Select Make Default PDF Viewer but it didn't make a difference. How exactly is Internet Explorer making the decision to open it in the browser plugin instead of a separate PhantomPDF window? How can I change that?

• Using Queries with Coherence Read-Through Caches

  Applications that rely on partial caches of databases, and use read-through to maintain those caches, have some trade-offs if queries are required. Coherence does not support push-down queries, so queries will apply only to data that currently exists in the cache. This is technically consistent with "read committed" semantics, but the potential absence of data may make the results so unintuitive as to be useless for most use cases (depending on how much of the database is held in cache). Alternatively, the application itself may manually "push down" queries to the database, either retrieving results equivalent to querying the cache directly, or may query the database for a key set and read the values from the cache (relying on read-through to handle any missing values). Obviously, if the result set is too large, reading through the cache may cause significant thrashing. It's also worth pointing out that if the cache is asynchronously synchronized with the database (perhaps via database change listener), that an application may commit a transaction to the database, then generate a key set from the database via a query, then read cache entries through the cache, possibly resulting in a race condition where the application sees older data than it had previously committed. In theory this is not problematic but in practice it is very unintuitive. For this reason it often makes sense to invalidate the cache when updating the database, forcing the next read-through to update the cache.

  Currently I have a 2mb/s ADSL connection. I signed up for the service more than five years ago. Has technology improved much during that time to allow for greater speed using the same wires? The building I live in is quite old and the lines aren't very good. They weren't able to support 6mb/s service back then. Now I notice that the lowest speed offered by my telco is 10mb/s. • Writing generic code when your target is a C compiler

  I need to write some algorithms for a PIC micro controller. AFAIK, the official tools support either assembler or a subset of C. My goal is to write the algorithms in a generic and reusable way without losing any runtime or memory performance. And if possible, I would like to do this without increasing the development time much and compromising the readability and maintainability much either. What I mean by generic and reusable is that I don't want to commit to types, array sizes, number of bits in a bit field etc. All these specifications, IMHO, point to C++ templates, but there's no compiler for it for my target. C macro metaprogramming is another option, but, again my opinion, that greatly reduces readability and increases development time. I believe what I'm looking for is a decent C++ to C translator, but I'd like to hear anything else that satisfies the above requirements. Maybe a translator from another high-level language to C that produces very efficient code, maybe something else. Please note that I have nothing against C, I just wish templates were available in it.

• Ubuntu Linux -- create custom burnable/bootable DVD image?

  I recently developed some kiosk software that runs on Ubuntu Linux, and my client needs me to set up ten more computers with the complete software package(and that number will only grow in the future). So I'm looking for a way to make this less of a pain in the neck and prevent me from shooting myself in the foot -- I had to disable some things on the installations of the operating systems like screensavers, automatic updates, etc. that would pop up and disrupt the kiosk operation. I don't feel comfortable doing that by hand across 10 computers, it seems stupid. Does anybody have recommendations for software that would let me burn an installable DVD with a complete image of the hard drive from one of the devices? I've looked at Clonezilla, G4L, and PartImage and I'm still not quite sure if any of them offer what I need. I know PartImage for sure won't work, because it doesn't support Ext4.

• Using Ubuntu isn't worth it for me, Windows works best.

  Welcome to Ubuntu and the lack of support( 12.04 LOS ). If I say Ubuntu 12.04 is a so so broken OS, I will get flamed. But if I ask for help, I can here the crickets chirruping. Unix/Linux user have an attitude and really don't like to share info. Because if they help everyone, they wouldn't have anyone to call a noob. Then their moms basement wouldn't be the same without being able to flame Ubuntu noobs. I am going back to windows I don't have to spend all day trying to get a single app or option to work. Sure Ubuntu is fun to tinker with but it is not a professional consumer OS. Windows is a better consumer based os, I don't need server software(Unix) that's been broken and hacked to be used like windows(Ubuntu). All the time I have wasted trying to get Ubuntu to work CORRECTLY cost me more the Windows 7 ultimate by far. HOW MUCH IS YOUR TIME WORTH. If you are unemployed and have all night to set in your moms basement and flame noobs then Ubuntu is for you. If you want to use an external monitor on your notebook or download Adobe reader use Windows 7. When are we going to stop complaining about corporate giants like Microsoft and admit they have great products. Gave it a shot, did work for me, I have better things to do with my time. bye Ubuntu

• Ubuntu 12.04 startup is slow and dmesg output seems to lose several seconds

  I use ubuntu on Dell Inspiron n4050.I have upgraded to ubuntu 12.04 from 10.04. But now I find the system startup is a little slow and plymouth only show purple screen without logo during startup. • What is involved with writing a lobby server?

  So I'm writing a Chess matchmaking system based on a Lobby view with gaming rooms, general chat etc. So far I have a working prototype but I have big doubts regarding some things I did with the server. Writing a gaming lobby server is a new programming experience to me and so I don't have a clear nor precise programming model for it. I also couldn't find a paper that describes how it should work. I ordered "Java Network Programming 3rd edition" from Amazon and still waiting for shipment, hopefully I'll find some useful examples/information in this book. Meanwhile, I'd like to gather your opinions and see how you would handle some things so I can learn how to write a server correctly. Here are a few questions off the top of my head: (may be more will come) First, let's define what a server does. It's primary functionality is to hold TCP connections with clients, listen to the events they generate and dispatch them to the other players. But is there more to it than that? Should I use one thread per client? If so, 300 clients = 300 threads. Isn't that too much? What hardware is needed to support that? And how much bandwidth does a lobby consume then approx? What kind of data structure should be used to hold the clients' sockets? How do you protect it from concurrent modification (eg. a player enters or exists the lobby) when iterating through it to dispatch an event without hurting throughput? Is ConcurrentHashMap the correct answer here, or are there some techniques I should know? When a user enters the lobby, what mechanism would you use to transfer the state of the lobby to him? • How do I log file system read/writes by filename in Linux?

  I'm looking for a simple method that will log file system operations. It should display the name of the file being accessed or modified. I'm familiar with powertop, and it appears this works to an extent, in so much that it show the user files that were written to. Is there any other utilities that support this feature. Some of my findings: powertop: best for write access logging, but more focused on CPU activity iotop: shows real time disk access by process, but not file name lsof: shows the open files per process, but not real time file access iostat: shows the real time I/O performance of disk/arrays but does not indicate file or process

• Problems setting Hyper-V permissions

  I am using a Windows 2012 Hyper-V server to host some test PCs. Our support personnel should be able to take snapshots of these machines and roll a test machine back to a specific snapshot, but they should not have any other permissions. I have followed the directions in this article and, on suggestion of another article have added the specific AD group to the local Hyper-V Administrators group, but whenever one of them attempts to connect to the server to take a snapshot, they get an error stating that they do not have permission to connect to that server. I'm sure I'm missing something, but at this point I'm at a loss as to what that would be. Can anyone tell me how to properly set these permissions? edit: Per request I am attaching a screenshot of the permissions I have set for this group.

• Change Scan-to-PC list names on Brother MFC-8890DW Printer

  I have two Brother MFC-8890DW. When scanning over the network, it shows a list of PCs (on the scanner display) to save to that have the software/drivers installed. Each PC is listed as the name of the employee for that computer. I have setup a third MFC-8890DW and installed on these computers. The list, however, is the computer name. Somehow it is possible to customize the name. Brother support did not know. I couldn't find anything in manuals. I thought I remember setting up those names before.

• Web Content Filtering for Windows Clients

  I'm working with a small business to solve a bunch of problems. One is their Windows 7 POS registers need to have web access restricted to only three remote support sites, but the back office machine needs an unfiltered connection. I'd like something I can install and configure on the few registers to block all but those few sites. In a perfect world this would restrict the normal register user, but the admin user would not be filtered. Free is best, if it works, but a small fee would be alright too. Microsoft's Family Safety filter is close, but requires a Windows Live account, which isn't ideal, but may be alright. Anyone use this in a small business environment? I'd prefer something easily managed at the local machines. K9 Web Protection is interesting and I'm going to look into it more. Are there other options? Seems like someone would have made something simple like this as an open source project, but maybe not.

• PNY ExpressCard SATA II 2-port card - drivers?

  I bought a couple of PNY eSATA cards for notebook computers, model P-NSA2-EC-RF. I mistakenly thought that they would be a bit more plug-and-play, like cards that supply USB or Firewire ports. They did not ship with the Driver CD, and the drivers I found on the PNY web site didn't work. I've emailed their support group, but we all know how likely it is that they will respond before the end of the decade. Does anyone have a driver disc handy for this model card, or know where I might download a driver ISO? (Dell XPS M1330 laptop running Windows 7 x64 and sometimes Windows 7 x86)

I love how it is a 'living book' and that on a monthly basis new updates are made available. In this particular update, as before, reader comments and questions have led to changes and enhancements in the book. In addition, there's now a tighter integration between the long list of samples on GitHub and the book, since wherever a sample relates to a text in the book, the book has a handy icon, so that you know when to hop over to GitHub to get a related sample. • How can one find software development work that involves directly the final end user?

  I've worked in software development for 15 years and, while there have been signficant personal achievements and a lot of experience, I've always felt detached from the man/woman-on-the-street, the every day person, how it affects their lives, in a number of ways: the technologies: embedded software, hidden away, stuff not seen by the everyday person. Or process technology supporting manufactured products the size of the systems, meaning many jobs, divided up, work is abstract, not one person can see the whole picture the organisations: large, with departments dealing with different areas, the software, the hardware, the marketing, the sales, the customer support the locations and hours: out-of-town business parks away from the rest of society, fixed locations, inflexible: 9-5 everyday This to me seems typical of the companies I worked for and see elsewhere. Granted, there are positives such as the technology itself and usually being among high calibre co-workers, but the above points frustrate me about the industry because they detach the work from its meaning. How can one: change these things in an existing job, or compensate for them? find other work that avoids these and connects with the final end user? Job designs tend to focus on the job content and technical requirements rather than how the job aims to fulfil end user needs, is meaningful.
